  • In a surprising and intriguing move Joseph Michael Straczynski the creator and showrunner for the 90s science fiction series Babylon 5 is now rebooting his original creation which is set to air on the CW network. However there have been some significant changes at the network itself that have impacted production. In this video I’d like to discuss the latest changes at the CW and how this has affected the planned reboot.

It's creating the character that JMS excels. I see the biggest challenge to be finding a studio and decision makers who will let him retain total creative control. Actors can be found - creative control cannot (be forfeited).

There are a lot of things to unpack here. On the one hand, it's great that JMS himself is heading it up, so it'll still be his vision of it. There's a solid fan base, so the support is there. But, that original cast is legendary; that's a lot of chemistry that, at best, will be damn hard to replicate, and the fact that so many of them have passed on means there's no chance of seeing their involvement in it. And... It's the CW. That's a really big coin toss on the quality of the show. I think I'm just gonna hold off until there's something more concrete to go on before I form an opinion of it

For me, the problem is Babylon 5 is as close to perfection as I've ever seen. As with any re-boot, "rose-tinted spectacles " syndrome will mean that any new version will have to be twice as good to be thought half as impressive as the original! But my main worry about the reboot can be summed up in 3 words...
    Delenn, Londo and G'kar
It wouldn't be B5 without these 3 iconic characters but Mira Furlan, Peter Jurasik and Andreas Katsulas gave such wonderful performances (Andreas in particular!) how could anyone else step into the roles?
If it were up to me I would simply remaster the original series, re-do all the special effects shots to bring them up to modern standards but leave the actors and story as-is. And then reboot Crusade which never got a chance to shine

I totally agree that Crusade never had a chance. It could have been wonderful. But because it was so short-lived the Crusade characters never had a chance to tap into the very invested affection we fans had for the B5 characters. JMS could more easily rebuild that story arc than try to replace the beloved B5 characters. No one is EVER going to be able to replace the original cast of B5.

The show does not have to be twice as good bro. Fans of the orginal are going to watch it as long as its not total trash. Also there is a good chance of picking up new fans.
The main problem imo is not the original caste members not returning. The main issues is the show going woke. Remember that episode where the doctor operates on the child against the parents wishes and they kill the child at the end because of their religion. Will dude have the balls to do stories like that?
Will London and Gkar secretly really hate each other because they were dating and Gkar dumped him. Are we going to have a transsexual shape shifter?

One of the current executives at Warner Brothers was a huge B5 fan back in the day. That always helps. But I honestly feel like JMS should either move into the future or the past. B5 wasn't perfect but you aren't going to improve on it. A B7 or B9 series could help to show parity with B5 and how some things just repeat like the universe has a pulse or cycle. As in evil rises up to be defeated and then rises anew. That guarding against the darkness is a constant struggle for every generation. I believe it was hinted that Valen becomes like the Vorlons, a being of light and energy. So you could have his influence around.

Babylon 5 remains one of my favourite series of all time. What made it was it's cast and writing. The calibre of acting as representatives of entire civilisations going head to head with their own personal conflicts remains unparalleled.
It had characters that had seen wars, strife and victory. You could see it on their faces.
I'll admit I was very sceptical of the BSG reboot but it ended up being another favourite. It's just hope a 'youthful cast' doesn't detract from what should be great storytelling.

JMS needs to maintain total control over it. Even then, I really, really...I don't know. I don't think you can do a B5 anything without a Londo, a G'Kar, a Delenn, a Morden, an Ivanova, and I ... cannot ... picture anyone else in those roles. I get that this is a chance to maybe explore some "what would happened if this person hadn't had to leave the show?". But I battle optimism and loathing at the idea of a reboot. I'm trying real hard to just stick with "In JMS I trust", but that worming doubt keeps finding ways to pop up and has to be stuffed back into it's cell each time I think about it.
And I can't suppress a fear that certain aspects / characters I truly loved will be considered "not the meat of it" and chopped up and lost in that blender he talked about. So I'm just focusing on that Lorien quote. _""Your patience is also a weapon, when used properly. We will arrive when we arrive and we will have the weapons we have. You can not win this war through force, you must .. understand your way out of this. Sheridan knows. What remains to be seen is whether he knows that he knows."_

It won't. You can reboot a mediocre show that had potential (like Battlestar Galactica, I was a fan of both series, but would have been the first to admit that the original was very mediocre). You cannot reboot successfully a great show, particularly with the performances we had for G'Kar, Londo and Ivanova. Why couldn't they just make a spinoff in the same universe? It certainly is big enough to allow for that. Rebooting is courting certain failure, and continuous unflattering comparisons with the original.
Star Trek TNG was successful in no small part because it did not attempt to "erase" the original series, which is what a reboot does. It's starting with the wrong foot. A bad decision all around.

The only justification I can see why this series needs rebooting is not technology-related. The Story and the Dialogue were so good, the acting and chemistry was perfect and the ambition still came across. These aspects easily outweigh the dated effects and kinda cheap looking sets for me (compared even to other series of the time).
Rather it has to do with Michael O'Hare having to leave the show after the first season, forcing JMS to rewrite the Story. Also, as far as I know, they were unsure about whether or not they'd get a fifth season, so they crammed everything they needed to tell into Season 4 (both conclusions of the Wars against the Shadows and against Clarke), making the eventually greenlit Season 5 an extended epilogue that only exists to tie up some loose ends.
Overall, JMS telling the story he originally wanted to tell with more time to breathe in later Seasons sounds like a good idea. Yet, considering how other recent shows have turned out, I remain very wary...

The original B5 was ideologically progressive, very much so for its time, but it did not make the show revolve around it like so many have done recently. B5 was groundbreaking at the time - going against the previous model in America of finding a good thing & running it in to the ground. JMS set out to tell a story and once it was told was perfectly content to pack his bags & move on. The fact that is was such a terrific story only added to his class, in the end, not being a classic good vs evil story but being much more nuanced about self determination. I don't think that I'm going to far afield by comparing it to Nabokov's "Lolita" as a morality tale regarding the error of imposing a "reality" on another as being evil regardless of the apparent moral stature of the one doing the imposition (see Azar Nafisi's brilliant book & analysis "Reading Lolita in Tehran").

I am also very sure that if the show runner really wants to make this new vision no matter what that after giving them their chance he will go to another option like one of the streaming sites like Hulu, Netflix or something like that to get it done. It has honestly been a long time since a good SCI-fi space opera has been on the air, and B5 has the most potential to reinvigorate this area what with the lack luster returns of Paramount over saturating with their Star Trek franchise and losing some site of what had made that franchise shine.

Will this show suck you in, make you feel one episode and think the next? Will this show fear controversial topics and long awesome speeches? Will the focus be on personal drama vs the more used and worn out social drama? Can it keep the same less bright atmosphere? Will it be good enough to watch on repeat every couple of years? I absolutely think the show can be remade. It's premise is fundamentally classic, and Straczynski has repeatedly proven his ability to weave a novel story. My issue has always been with the level of financial support afforded it (well, that and corporate thievery/sabotage). There's being sensible with the cost of a show, and there's being cheap and putting the onus on everyone else to somehow still make it awesome. Case in point: A comparison made at the time of the original show's airing, Babylon 5 was operating on less than 30% of the same per-episode budget as Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. But, especially, with the advent of streaming media, I really think a TV network showing would be less than ideal ─ particularly as demonstrated by Marvel's run of work on Disney+. Hooowever, it might be the genius wild card move to keep it on a broadcast network ─ but well funded! ─ as there isn't much for it to directly compete with; I still think it should live someplace more Internet friendly like Hulu, but opinions are not inherently great.

Forced diversity just as bad as when someone purposefully leaves out an other person from a project just because the actor/actress has different skin color or religion etc.

She could definitly work as a new Susan Ivanova... she is bad ass character in Expanse.
Then again .. Claudia Christian is still great looking and young looking to atleast play like the Captain's role even ... (great looking is not nessesary tough, just wanted to state out that).

Hey, anything is possible with this series. Remember, the original managed the standard 5 season run in spite of it's "Perils Of Pauline" life. I just hope Strazynsky can pull off the same actor & character chemistry that made us all fall in love with & stick with the original show through all it's struggles to stay on the air.

It was a series with a very solid and amazing script, incredible effects, very real themes and characters with their own epic, dimension and depth, luxurious moments, unforgettable sinclair/valen, sheridan, delenn, londo and gkar, I think the new Actors have a very high bar to play them, I'm just afraid they'll do the stupid things of woke culture, deforming the characters to fit them into a decontextualized ideological mold, but this JMS in charge is important.

What if Straczynski uses a couple of his original plots that studio executives refused to allow? Would Delenn transitioning from male to female or Susan and Talia being in a lesbian relationship be too woke for you?

With J Michael Straczynski at the helm, I am somewhat optimistic that this can be great; however, this is still in the early stages. JMS needs to be in complete control of the writing as the recent works to come out of Disney, Paramount, and Amazon, have been mostly lack luster to completely unacceptable. He needs to be in complete control without interference from the network; which I very much doubt will happen. The entertainment environment is totally different than it was in the early 2000s but if the series is developed, I will hold judgement until it comes out.

  • @anonymousrex5207

Still the best sci-fi series of all time, so it is going to be really hard to measure up to the original in terms of story and especially the casting. Frankly, I think they would be smart to bring in some new characters than try to recast characters like Londo and G'Kar, who were just flawless from start to finish, but you never know they could find some new people for the role that do the characters justice. Like everything these days I will have to wait and see how the show turns out, but the problem is everyone is so quick to judge, whine and criticize shows right out of the gate instead of letting them develop. The first season of B5 was a slow burn, but when you go back and re-watch it after the series was over, you realize just how good it was at setting up all of the stuff to come in the later seasons. No matter what I hear, I am still looking forward to checking this one out when/if it finally airs.

B5 is among the most relevant SciFi series ever produced. Among other gems I recall the cultural exchange episode that ends after the other cultures' relatively uniform spiritual beliefs were a focus of the story. But the Earth beliefs are simply represented by a line of many diverse clergy of all modern faiths ...like, yes, there's Jews In Space. And Zoroastrians. And Hindus. And ...everyone.

  • @StarCadet

Babylon 5 is still my favorite Sci-Fi. Michael O'Hare made the series and his leaving the series damaged it heavily. O'Hare had this quiet confidence that created a unique character who was more Picard than Kirk. Boxleitner was horrible in my opinion. Sheridan was a loud, action-oriented person. Had O'Hare stayed with the show and we saw his character arch play out with marrying Deleen and traveling back in time to become Valen, then there just never would be a chance for any other show to come close. Even in his absence, the show was still in the upper echelon of Sci-Fi. A reboot will NEVER do it justice. JMS needs to take the story and move it to Babylon 7, a station set 100 years after the decommission of Babylon 5. Unless JMS can figure out how to reunite the original Season 1 cast and play the show out as it was intended, then a Babylon 5 reboot is just sacrilegious.

Absolutely spot on mate. After seeing strong and sensible characters such as (the original) Kirk and Spock act like brawling children in the Abrams universe I'd hate to see the modern take that (so called) modern writers would bring to B5 in these days of over the top political correctness and wokefulness just to ensure the series got aired. B5 was ahead of its time with strong male, female and ethnic characters who performed with energy and were crucial to the arc and not just there a token to satisfy. B7 yes, B5R no, not in these silly times.

    • @StarCadet
      @StarCadet 2 года назад +1

@@Stephens8x6Workshop You are exactly right. B5 was a thinking person's show. There was some action where appropriate but it was always cerebral. As you point out, the female and ethnic characters were far ahead of their time. Talia and Susan having an almost romantic relationship were far ahead of any modern wokeness and it wasn't played for equality. It was a touching story of Susan who had grown not to trust anyone, finally letting someone in, and having that person betray her. The characters just happened to be female.

    • @gatosombra
      @gatosombra 2 года назад

@@Stephens8x6Workshop Babylon 5 touched on very sensitive issues considering the time, but unlike the woke ones, they did it intelligently, without damaging the character or ruining the story, for example delen and Ivanova were female characters with a powerful charge of feminism, see delen a pacifist and priestess appear in the white star to save babylon as the cavalry and send that speech "only a human captain has survived a battle with a nimbari fleet, he is behind me, you are in front, if you value your lives, go elsewhere"
I just hope they don't put the woke up
its ideological merry sue, its meaningless topics, forcing arguments to sneak in
progressive sermons, ruining the saga as they have done with everything they have touched.

If the show was done by the original Creator it has a good chance of becoming a popular hit as long as that creator is not trying to insert modern-day politics and sensibilities which most people are tired of being preached to and will not watch. Great storytelling is the key.

The original B5 was dark gritty and lived up to the hype in the end. I feel, even though the script writing of the reboot maybe fine, the visual content will be newer and more flashy. Thus destroying the original gritty feel of the franchise environment.

I think it will be worth watching. I agree with many of the comments that it will be difficult to match the calibre of acting seen in the original. I have concerns about the CW's involvement, but maybe the buyout will shift the creative direction of the company as a whole. I am so glad JMS is going to be on the project. I think that is the reason so many reboots do not live up to the original; the creative forces behind the original are often absent.

I think the key will be to build characters instead of focusing on special effects. The draw to B5 for me was the way the characters changed and grew, building on one another. The focus was the story, not the effects that so many shows have today. If they can stay focused on character development and not so much on effects, I think it will do well.
