    Really good job. This is coming from someone that saw this and knew that this is everything i dont like about character creation in dnd 5e and the version coming in september. Nothing personal, i just realized that players /usually/ dont want to play characters, just want a list of cool powers. I am preffering OSR systems lately.
    Anyway, really good job, you put a lot lf effort in this and it shows. The one thing i can say is that you are actually limiting yourself by just calling this dnd homebrew, by all means this is a whole new system. It holds it own weight and just tying it into dnd you are limiting yourself. Give it a name and you have made a whole new game, thats really cool!

    You know what would be great? A guide / recourses for making your own skill trees. There's no way you can make skill trees for every cool anime system, or just general magic system. Imagine going into a new campaign and getting a whole, custom skill trees just for that campaign, or even your specific character. This would be amazing, please spill some secrets.

    I do love how deep and thorough you went with this, and I adore this customizable classless skill tree system. However I think I can give couple of suggestions:
    1. Limiting the nodes for purchase, if you lack certain recourse. Exposing Strike could be used if you have Sneak Attack purchased, I think. So wouldn't it be reasonable to lock this option until you purchase Sneak Attack?
    2. It would be great to implement some abilities from classes and escpecially subclasses into the skill tree. It's not nessesary, but anyway, you did really tremendously awesome job❤

    I'm absolutely loving this! Though I do have a few questions/concerns around some of the abilities in the Teal skill tree.
    *Question:* Does the Primal Strike ability work on Unarmed Strikes, and if so how does that interact with the sheathing/stop wielding criteria for ending the ability (you don't really sheathe or stop wielding an empty hand). I think being able to punch with elemental damage sounds really cool and fun.
    *Concern:* It does feel a little strange that the abilities in the Teal skill tree rely so much on Mana, yet you can take those abilities without having any mana at all. That kind of goes for the "hybrid" trees in general I guess. I feel like it may make more sense for them to be able to spend resources from either of the respective trees that they're associated with, rather than requiring spending resources from both at the same time.
    Like, rather than having Jutsu's cost 1 Mana and 1 Stamina point, maybe make it so you have to spend 2 points of EITHER Stamina or Mana (or one of each). That way they still have to spend the same amount of resources, but they have the option to focus solely on the Green and Teal tree without having to drop points into the Blue tree (or vice-versa).

    • @TheUglyGoblin
      @TheUglyGoblin  Месяц назад +1

      Oooo these are such good points!
      I'll have to sit on the unarmed question for awhile but love that idea.
      As for the mana stamina, I totally get that. I think I would make it an Optional rule instead of a core rule though, that you can swap put 2 of 1 resource to turn it into 1 of another. So 2 stamina for 1 mana, or 2 mana for 1 stamina. Makes sense to me :3
      Also thank you so much n_n

    I've been running a campaign for a few friends in the last 4 months to test things out, and they don't even want to touch D&D again. But it is way more complex, and with a ton of number crunching which I and my friends love.

    My favorite skill/level up/stats system hands down has to be path of exile. And I fell in love with it the 1st time when a cyclone raider was meta.
    Basically you pick a class that is stereotypically associated with bows and agility, and you make it into a strength based 2 handed spin to win flame cyclone monster that runs hella fast and phases through enemies. Basically I like soft class systems. Where you are nudged into a role but you can easily change your play style with some thought put into your build.

    Hey! I'd like to start by saying I absolutely love this! It's super fun and makes for a really cool new way to play the game! I'm super excited to see where this goes from here!
    However, I did have one thing suggestion that I'd like to see your opinion of.
    I feel like characters that specialize in magic are somewhat underpowered compared to the other branches. (Particularly towards the later levels)
    Specifically, I'm referring to how much mana costs.
    In order to gain 9th level spells, you need 50 mana minimum (which is in itself is not an issue), but a character will have to put 5 whole levels in to get 50 mana. That's 5 levels gaining nothing else. I don't think that 9th level spells should be cheaper, nor do I think that you should gain more mana per LP put in, but I do think you should get something else out of putting in that much mana.
    The change I would implement is this: whenever a character hits the threshold for a new spell type, they gain a spell.
    Functionally, 9 additional spells.
    If that's too good, then maybe go every other threshold. So, 4-5 additional spells
    These are just my own opinions, though! I'm just curious to see what your thoughts are!

    • @TheUglyGoblin
      @TheUglyGoblin  Месяц назад +2

      This is absolutely genius! Such an excellent solution! I'll add it in first thing tomorrow! Thank you so much for this! Maybe having some additional abilities as you level could be cool!

    1.Take weapon master(bullseye) 4 times, every dart throw is an auto-crit, take yeeter to double dmg mods from stats.
    Nowhere does it say you can't choose the same weapon master ability twice.
    2.Also get sharpshooter feat.
    3.Since we pick up a flourish along the way take multishot and upgrade extra attack whenever available.
    Congrats! Now you have a guaranteed 21 dmg per attack on average and assuming you have 2 stamina points you can slam out 51 dmg in one go before lvl 5. (Multishot states the dmg is 1d4, not 1d4+mod if you're wondering why it's not 21 multiplied by 3)
    There's no cap on the asi's btw so if you really wanted to you could have a dex score of 69 at lvl 20 for an ac of 46.

      @@TheUglyGoblin I read your doc for it a couple times and since you seem to be pretty active in your comments, could you answer a couple questions?
      1. For the health node, it says that you can purchase it a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus/modifier. Does that mean a level 1 character could spend 2 points and have 15 hp + (con mod x 3)
      I'm no game designer but did you think of having HP (and hit dice) based on how many points you have in a certain section of the skill tree each level up? Instead of everyone having 5 HP (+ con mod) as a base.
      Like, if you had put more points into physical one level it'd be a d10 (6), and then mystical another level that'd be a d6 (4), technical obv being a d8 and (5) while also limiting the health thing by once per level.
      2. I know this isn't finished, but do you plan to add things from ranger or any of the other abilities missing from other classes?

      @@musicman9263 so number 1 haha yes you can totally purchase multiple times from the health node :P and the loss of being able to purchase other abilities. I think that's where the biggest balancing aspect of this skill tree lies is choosing between forgo hp to get more powerful abilities Or talking hp at the loss of more powers and abilities.

    Prioritizing Charisma for casting
    Proficient in Persuasion, Deception, an Herbalism kit, and Brewer supplies

    Mysteries are solved, Character can use Geas to send monsters or NPCs who speak common on adventures in their place.
    Level 5
    +2 Spell Weaves x2 (Linger, Split), Spells x4
    Can cast [0] Friends, Message, Guidance, and [1] Alarm, and [2] Knock, and [4] Polymorph, Fabricate, Private Sanctum and [5] Geas, Legend Lore, Awaken, Teleportation Circle
    Character lives in their sanctum as the Party's benefactor, using skills and geas to force people to work for them, using awaken to create friends and allies to the party, working on teleport circles to move around. With 5hp, they have solved almost any campaign so long as the rest of the party trusts them. A Wizard would have to be 9th level to surpass this abomination. This isn't including anything they've learned through ritual caster, such as druid spells allowing for long range communication with the party. A stay-at-home witch can give the party far too much power for their level, and at level 6 they can already pick up a mystic art.
    The concept needs work. You have undervalued the concept of spell levels, and what wizard will pick up HP when they can rely on spells and their party to avoid taking damage? The result will be characters who underinvest in the basic essentials (HP, Mana) or characters who overinvest in one specialty that overpowers the rest of the party.

    Lets say it unlocks after you put at least 1 point in 10 different nodes. You get +1 to all saving throws for every 5 different nodes you have a point in. This build incentivizes a well rounded build but never excels in anything. It just makes the ability a little too strong for anyone trying to make a damage build from what I’ve seen. Maybe just adding a clause to limit how many purchases you can make would help.

      I just saw the changes and that’s perfect! Idk if you’ll see this but there’s one last ability you might not have noticed that interacts with the extra attacks you can make at disadvantage. With the Reckless Rage type you can make all your attacks at advantage, which is really cool, but RAW that also includes any additional attacks you would make, meaning it would turn those extra bow, crossbow, or punch attacks using stamina from disadvantage to advantage. Just adding a clause that those attacks arent affected by the reckless rage would fix it.

    I wonder how you can do a skill tree like That Time I Turned Into A Slime (anime) where repeated use of abilities or obtaining combinations of abilities evolves and unlocks new ones.
    Obviously you can write a progression system, but how would you offer it to the players in a way that gives them natural progression based on their actions and avoids metagaming (i.e. choosing to spam Pass without trace to evolve it)?

    • @TheUglyGoblin
      @TheUglyGoblin  Месяц назад

      Mmm one option you could do is remove levels all together and simply reward players with abilities from nodes any time the successfully achieve an action (related to that node) they've never achieved before? And maybe if they unlock an adrenaline, a rage and rage resistance you can naturally reward them with a rage type

    • @lancemckenzie1074
      @lancemckenzie1074 Месяц назад

      @@TheUglyGoblin Exactly, the logical progression is clean on paper, but if the players can see the skill tree and have fore knowledge it takes the surprise out of things.
      Maybe you divide the tree into local progression segments that are visible (say, common rage skills), have secret skill unlocks within those segments (rare or special rage skills), and have secret parameters for advancement to advanced skill segments (cursed rage skills).
      Perhaps some segments/skill archetypes have known requirements such as common roles and those which have exemplar myths/heroes in universe which have specific requirements (I know a rune knight must have communicated with wisps and learned to weave mana into ink). Common roles are well mapped because they are not exotic (long range archery) which may only require a number of any skills (3x bow skills, e.g. Final Fantasy Tactics). You could reward players who role play with knowledge of skill requirements related to rare archetypes (Jon Fellhammer was said to smith a thousand knives and then his blades were unbreakable).

    In my latest build, I changed how we roll ability scores. Each score is now rolled d6-1. That score is your modifier. When you level up enough to add 2, you add those to the modifiers you want to increase to a max of 10.

    Truly, there is no real original idea anymore. I have been working on a skill tree for 3 weeks, then this comes across my recommended. OH well, time to abandon mine and play this hhaha

    Path of Exile as for me become a to big game to be good, but what they did with the skilltree is very intresting. YXou even can craft sections of your skilltree yourselfe and then put skillpoints in the best notes in this tree.

    I can certainly see the possibility for customization of the tree for us homebrewers, how difficult would it be to make use of existing material for PC classes in these trees? Especially third party material. Like, I imagine you could use third party barbarian stuff as new types of rages pretty straightforwardly. But couuld ypu make use of some of the other classes expanded options in this?

    • @TheUglyGoblin
      @TheUglyGoblin  Месяц назад +1

      Oh for sure! For example, you could reward PCs some weapon masteries, or some rogues maybe some of the exposing strikes!
      Either through an NPC training them, or perhaps they could chose a couple of nodes that are maybe worth a total of 4 Level Points instead of taking a feat or ASI

    Someone's already mentioned starwars, but I have a specific game.
    Check out starwars galaxies original skill system. It was entirely classless pre combat update but had roles such as entertainer or bounty hunter or politician. Not all of it will be applicable but I feel like there's something you'd be able to draw on there.
