  • The obstacles to relieving homelessness in America seem stubbornly difficult to solve. So, Mike Coffman, the mayor of Aurora, Colorado, sought to learn about the issue by living among the homeless for a week. Correspondent Kelefa Sanneh talked with Coffman, and with researchers who say one solution to the problems facing the homeless, known as Housing First, has shown impressive results.

These houses can even be co-located near other services - rehab, job counseling & training, and other community services - maybe even a small medical clinic. This is a big problem that needs a big idea & a Big effort but it could be done.
A church in Austin has already done it. They bought land, got donations for supplies and builders donated labor to build an entire community. They provide rehab services, job counseling, a kitchen for food services, transportation, etc. it’s been highly successful.

The main thing that most politicians fail to realize is how to live frugally. They simply say even in their personal life, I have the money and I want this so I'm going to get it. If you have ever experienced homelessness, you learn to make those few dollars that you happen upon stretch because not all homeless people are alcoholics or drug addicts. There are those that have made bad decisions financial and personal in their lives. There are those people who have been forced out of apartments due to corporations taking them over and raising rents. It can even be costly if you are in a state in which you were not born in to simply get a birth certificate in order to get a state issued ID. There is no quick fix to this problem. It takes time, resources and most of all understanding of the homeless population.

I made it but had to do things others would not have been able to like ride a bike 2-3 hrs per day to work. I got a small studio paid for several months and 7 years later I'm clean, working on my mental and psychical health and bachelor's degree in psychology. It was not a chosen lifestyle but result of untreated OCD, PTSD substance abuse and domestic violence. My studio was only $525/month and that's a lot cheaper than the ER, police, social workers, welfare. It pays to get people to the most functioning level they can possibly be at.

If you want to end homelessness you need to regulate the housing market. Homelessness is caused by a lack of affordable housing. The lack of affordable housing is being cause by the price of a house going up drastically ahead of wages. Working people cannot afford to buy any sort of house because of all the investors with millions to spend, like BlackRock and foreign investors, out competing and buying up housing from builders and existing homeowners. Rent goes up everywhere because would be homeowners end up renting with high salaries, which drives up rent and forced poorer people out on the street. If you cant pay $1600 a month for a studio apt then someone else will.
If you want to fix housing then you need to pass laws limiting the buying and selling of residential property to working class US citizens. Limit the ownership of a house to people and not companies or investors and you will see rents literally cut in half. Rent will come down to 2010 levels and it wont take 25 years to save for a down payment for a small house.

Medicine Hat in Canada is successful with their housing first model. I checked their public financial statements. Their budget is in surplus and they are paying down their debt. But the lowest tax bracket pay 31.8034% between Canada Federal, Alberta state, and Medicine Hat municipal taxes. The highest tax bracket pays 63.2807% between federal, state, and municipal taxes. And Medicine Hat is having a decline of residents, shrinking their taxable workforce.

No they don't want to help people. It's easier to just Warehouse them in the housing first model. They don't want to pay for actual Services to help people.

Housing 1st is the most sensible & respectful & humanist idea to treat homelessness.
But for the grace of God.
It all began with Reganomics, remember? AIDS crises, homelessness takes off, wage freezes, unions start breaking down, auto factories closing....
We all need to take care of one another & until we do & unless we do this country will not regain it's footing.

Mayor Coffman's 7-day Homelessness visit is a SHAM. To truly immerse one's self into something-especially a neighborhood [any homeless population]-Mayor Coffman needed to live on his streets for at minimum 31 days; and at maximum 3 mos. The Mayor of Aurora, CO, never got past his OWN privilege and biases.

Wages stay stagnant. Rent goes up.People cant afford food, health care, a car, and rent that keeps increasing on a minimum wage job. Its basic math people I don't know why everyone is so puzzled by homelesssness???? Raise wages... Put rent control in place and you'll see homelessness decrease.

Housing first can really change self esteem and could help with finding a job because they actually have an address to put down on their application. Also if implemented programs such as drug treatment and schooling for a better education can really make a huge difference and impact. If they are disabled and have no income, there should be some advocates to help them get on disability benefits. If on drugs, drug treatment and testing could definitely help as well. There are always going to be people who don't want this, but most will. Life is overwhelming, boy do I know that but when someone has support, the support can go a long way.

The truth is that the housing industry is really to blame for this. Charging tenants 1/3 of their income is how people in this country can have live with dignity. It's not about deserving anything or entitlement. It's about having a society full of people who aren't breaking down mentally or struggling to afford basic necessities. All of these people flipping houses and venture capitalists who care about making as much money as possible could not care less about the homeless. At the end of the day we can't afford to have a nation that is addicted to drugs, shooting people in road rages of disputes, having mental break downs in public.

As long as health care is not provided equally in our country homelessness would continue to be our endless pandemic. The mayor said it himself, it's a lifestyle choice as we have a drug addiction, mental problems, and more problems, however, what we don't have implemented is medicine, hospitals, and healthcare for those people in need. Start reconsidering the way heal care is handle in America and the government would see people accepting the help to leave that lifestyle!

I walked on the beach in La Habana at 3 am (jetlag) looking for homeless people. All homeless people set up at night if there is a beach (you couldn't walk on the sidewalk in Rio de Janeiro after 4 pm.) There wasn't a single person in Cuba sleeping outdoors. It is in the Constitution that you cannot be fired.

Addictive and mental health challenges? Health care. Universal Health Care would go a long way to help people that don't want to be there. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs lists the priorities in order. Physical needs and psychological needs need to come before expecting some kind of self-actualization. Everyone having access to healthcare could cut out a lot of these bigger problems before they start.

Why don’t we address all these abandoned buildings in this country? Simply charging Amazon 1% in taxes could fix the homeless problem in this country. We could rebuild those buildings give people hope and push America forward. Instead we allow these companies to pay less taxes than poor Americans and bill people as the richest man in the world.

Agree with the comments here. CBS when we know better, we do better … So, to have Coffman play acting for one week when there are people who ARE homeless as well as people who are working on the solution for years seems more of a slap in the face. Housing first.

Housing first works for all. Even an addict will accept free housing. But will that solve the addiction? Drug treatment is the top long term solution. Because today's homeless are different. The drug crisis is at an all time high. 10x what it was in 1980.
