I’ve been volunteering at a soup kitchen in downtown Denver for years and part of my job is to listen to the stories of all the people I meet. I can honestly say, the stories are getting scarier and scarier as time passes. It used to be “oh well I was kicked out when I was 16 and got into drugs” or “I got cancer and lost my job and house.” Stories that are sad and shouldn’t have happened but explainable. Nowadays it’s “I had a job paid my rent and one day I got home and I was getting evicted.” No sudden tragedy, no screwup, no drugs or crime that got them into homelessness. Just got screwed over. That’s what people need to understand nowadays. It can happen to ANYONE. Ive met people with masters and ba’s, people in STEM, people who went to some of the best colleges in the nation and they all end up on the street for no other reason than a few incidences of bad luck. As a kid I was told “if you work hard, go to a good school, get a degree in a good field and then work hard at your job then you’ll do great!” Turns out that was all a lie, you can do all of that and end up on the street or none of that and end up in a mansion.
@@robinrynearson7212 All apartments have been jacking up their prices. It used to be more or less a a free market where landlords would raise and lower their rents based on supply and demand but nowadays firms are buying up houses in mass meaning they can drive up rent for hundreds of houses. Then there’s only a few apartments and houses left that are affordable and so everyone goes for those driving up the prices of whatever’s left. It’s an endless cycle of over inflation.
@Hey-Okayyy TV Fair enough, it’s rare for people to come home and find their stuff thrown on the street and illegal without notice. However, it’s not uncommon especially in denver to come home one day and be told your rent is increasing by hundreds of dollars. Recently happened in a building not far from me where they jacked prices up by $800 for one man. I mean if you’re low income you can barely afford a $50 rise in your rent much less $100+.

What saddens me most about this and the person who inherited a house which he owns outright but is under constant threat of losing it over property taxes is, I can easily see myself in those situations. Fifteen years in an apartment, paid his rent, lives on social security, and for no good reason-maybe some trust fund hipsters wanted his place-he’s living in a tent. We are a big, rich country. We should have a housing surplus. People should be buying homes and opening storefronts for no money down. We need to bring back Common Sense (Thomas Paine, look it up). We have replaced taxation without representation with an economy in which people are one layoff or medical issue away from total ruin. America isn’t supposed to be about ‘maximizing revenue’ by overcharging and underpaying people.
I had trouble understanding the man in the video. So, I don't know the reason he lost where he lived. In some States such as mine after a certain age, 65 or so, you no longer have to pay property taxes. You're right, in most cases you have to have 20% down of the house purchase price to buy one. And, I see all these fancy houses and apartments built all the time. Well, the counties should see to it somehow that housing is affordable (not given) for young or old or not well to do. But, we all have to live within our means.
We let anyone get houses with loans in the 2000’s. Look it up. I get what you’re saying. Not everyone can pay for houses. I’m trying to buy a house and it sucks. I can’t afford these prices. But I don’t expect to have a house that I can’t afford. Prices will fix themselves. They can’t stay this high for rent or buying. People can’t afford them.
Sad & unfortunate but this is America 🇺🇸 but looking at his tent....everything in there is very minimal...so hes definitely not there to stay...hopefully he gets his blessing soon
Retirement is a huge killer of people -- sitting in a chair all day doing nothing literally kills people. So, even retired people need something to do. Those that have money can do volunteer work or get into politics, for example, while people without money many need to find a job to both occupy their time and provide income. Was homeless twice back home in LA, during the 80's. Was not planning for my body to fall apart and end up on disability. Now spend every day trying to sale my belongings, so I can survive
A tiny home (80 sq ft or so) with electricity, insulation, AC, and a door with a lock can be built for under $5000. Set up thousands of these on vacant lots across the city, and built a cheap and durable bathroom using concrete. Homelessness can be solved for under a billion!
San Francisco spends over $80,000.00 per homeless person per year and Seattle spends over $100,000.00 per homeless person. Do you really think that politicians and administrators want to solve the problem?

Not houses but camps. I can’t applaud this. If this isn’t a dystopian wet dream, I’m not sure what is. Rent rates being on par with mortgages is immoral. There is not a politician that should get funding or pension till they’re giving better housing affordability.
JR Pacer, "looks" like a good idea. A better idea would be rich and corporation pay taxes so affordable housing can be built. A better idea is pay people livable wages. A better idea is medicare for all. A better idea free college. And these ideas are just to get people on their feet.
@@anthonybrowne3942 There was a scenario called the "Housing Projects" in Chicago, Illinois to help less fortunate people with housing but it didn't work out so well because the Government is useless with assistance. When you're homeless there is no place to sit. Every single patch of ground is spoken for and people can, and do, tell you to ''move along'' all the time. Ever since the invention of private property there has been a 'gravity tax' for living on this planet. You are born here and cannot escape gravity, so someone decided you had to PAY THEM to live on it.

I agree. There are billionaires that are taking joy rides to space while folks living in the same cities have nothing. I feel like these camps are gonna backfire. A lot of time homelessness attributes to and from mental illness. I believe people would rather go to jail than live in these. We have the resources, like you said, to build actual structures instead of having people living in tents. Homelessness shouldn’t even be a problem in a country like the US.

St. Louis is doing the same.
They did that in Oakland. It failed. They became overrun with crime and drugs.
A LAW SUIT to stop people from having a TENT over their heads!! THAT'S NICE!! this is a well organized well managed set up! HELPING PEOPLE WHO NEED IT , WANT IT, AND ARE GRATEFUL TO HAVE IT!

THEY SHOULD TRY THIS NATIONWIDE. WE ARE THE RICHEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD NO ONE SHOULD GO WITHOUT IN THIS COUNTRY 😎
Well, you would think that to be true, but who’s holding on to the wealth? Who’s holding up distribution of wealth and equity? Hmmm, elected officials and the elites that put them there. America reminds me of Russia before the fall of the Tsar.
@@riandraegon556 When the Chi commies take full control, and the equity of communist utopia arrives you will have your wish.
It's a mental illness and drug addiction problem. Until the laws are changed where you can keep someone safe against their will, nothing will change.
They actually thought this was an achievement.
Iknorite? It's just a powderkeg waiting for a lit match.
Right 🤦🏽
I mean, I think it's a better attempt than any other city has made so far. What would you propose?
Why not tiny homes? The fact that people in the so-called richest country ever known has homeless camps is pretty sad.
@@rareSNaRF Well homelessness is a problem because people want to be lazy instead of getting to work and improving themselves.
@@BigRodd91 I agree with that too. It’s a different case with each individual.
American Senior Citizens Homeless in The World's most Powerful and Wealthiest Country.
And we have so much land all over this country to build affordable housing. It is greed nothing but greed. This is so sad 😞
I wish they would do that in Mississippi
Hoovervilles. So we’re going backwards to a time when tent cities were common 🥺☹️
I pray I don’t end up in one. But I fear the reality of things ahead. Especially if we hit another Great Depression as expected.
