Season 2 of Navigating Narcissism premieres on March 16th!
Sarah Edmondson was a young actress pursuing a career in film and television when she hit a low point and was hoping to find a new purpose in life. She ran into renowned filmmaker, Mark Vicente, who spoke to her about NXIVM and eventually brought her into the organization. There she started following Keith Raniere and Nancy Salzman's mission. They encouraged Sarah to give her all. In part 1 of 2, we learn about how NXIVM's leadership undermined its followers and groomed them in such a conniving way that no one knew what was happening to them. Sarah grew close to many members of the organization - which later turned out to be a cult and even rose up in leadership. Listen to how Sarah's journey and newfound community helped her find a new meaning in life.

    Guest Bio:
Sarah is a working actor and artist. She is known for her role in NXIVM, which initially intrigued her with its promise to provide the tools and insight she needed to reach her potential. It all came into focus when she accepted an invitation to join DOS, a “secret sisterhood” within NXIVM. It was a decision that resulted in a front-page bombshell in the New York Times featuring her story as a woman on a mission to shut NXIVM down.
Sarah published Scarred: The True Story of How I Escaped NXIVM, the Cult that Bound My Life. Sarah’s journey as a whistleblower has also been featured in “The Vow”, the critically acclaimed HBO documentary series.

I escaped a cult called Antioch in Annapolis, Md. there was child abuse spousal abuse and I got out with my kids. Hardest thing I ever went through. I lose 30 k in attorneys fees but I got my kids out. It's so triggering to even think about what might have been. I'm looking for other survivors to connect with for support

Dr. Ramani: as you say: "Relationship with organization." Thats the key word for us who are abused in "churches"/cult like. When your realtionship with God became relationship with organization and "pastor/apostle" as a leader, its a road to distraction. People have flaws, like everyone of us. To depend on some human to give you value is very, very dangerous. My little observation from church folks. I am out 25 years from that place, but posion is still in the system - mind, feeling, decisions, etc. 25 yaers after leaving that place ...

I withdrew from what I thought was a cult in my small town. It was a Buddhist meditation group which I joined to strengthen my meditation practice. Over time more and more of my time was required by the group. It was insidious how we were drawn in. At one point we were told there was a weekly class coming up, ostensibly to study a Buddhist book. After committing to a three month period, we were given a schedule which included a weekend retreat every month. Ok, I felt I had already made a commitment so I went along. It turned out the retreats were glorified group therapy. The leader was a very intelligent who was a self appointed spiritual leader who had taken many classes about self improvement. She was not a licensed therapist. We were required to do a lot of writing exercises about ourselves which we were required to read to the group. Private things that were revealed in our writing were brought up often during the retreat. At one point I became aware that I had never asked for therapy nor had I given permission for group therapy. After a year and a half, the control became too much and I just quit cold turkey. Immediately, the leader started sending group emails including myself. They were demeaning in a subtle way and meant to make me feel guilty for quitting. I felt I had escaped a cult after quitting and looked for more information online. I wasn’t able to find much and find this discussion very helpful. I didn’t realize it wasn’t right until I had left.

I've been there before. Back In my University days. I joined a religious group that encouraged us to be open and sincere to them about our personal struggles. I opened up and then realized that it could be weaponized and used for character assassination. I just had to leave. I encountered another one that exhibits almost all the narcissistic traits including the smear campaign online plus threats to destroy my finances and social life. People need to be aware of this traits In group relationships and avoid such groups.

There's a saying that we should give them the benefit of the doubt I've learnt that saying is a load of crap people need to earn my trust . I know a lot of people, do community groups blah blah and blah, there's not many I do, trust I know the ones I do there the best .
      All the best.

So much of this sounds like what happens to you in Scientology. The "technology" is designed to get you to override all of your emotions, which puts your intuition and powers of discernment on ice. Very powerful, coercive tool. Once they get you to relinquish this, they have you.

You help so much with the clarity. I appreciate your manner, demeanor and style. I wish you every success.❤

I have flashbacks just to listening Sarah experience... I remeber when one women from that word of faith "church" is buying me a ticket for group traveling on the sea side of my country saying to me that I am GOOD SOIL to saw a money or whatever...what a fking hook, she was something like self anointed "mentor" to me...once, she send me to copy answers for bible school, I was so honoured for that kind of responsibility to not see the answers of tests for bible school... they are hooking and cooking me for long time, about 4 years of brainwashing... 25years later I still struggle and praying for someone like dr Ramani is to help me...here in Croatia therapists have no idea what is this...we are weirdos to them

One thing that jumped out at me was you guys mentioning that he was a computer nerd, and theaster slave thing. Besides the obvious, master slave relationship is also a computer programing term. It is a model of communication for hardware devices where one device has a unidirectional control over one or more devices. (It copied and pasted bold. Idk why.)
But it seems that this so-called genius structured this cult loosely on basic computer programming terminology and framework. He only seems like a genius because our culture perpetuates the mith that only geniuses can learn computer programming , or be good at computers.

Honestly when I heard Jada Smith at the end I was so turned off. She made their relationship public and sadly Will goes right along with it. She definitely has narcissistic traits. Seems a little hypocritical. Scratching my head on this one. Only God knows her heart but actions speak volumes.

Thank you for a great interview. Cultish controls - seen *and* unseen especially at the hands of a siddha master - are entirely real.
Regarding blackmail… the deliberate separation of my family was the blackmail I endured. This separation ensured that the lies of my former spiritual teachers would never become public knowledge. My former teachers have been highly covered-for by the
many, including currently acting teachers, in the non-dual space.

My first indicator was when I saw the DOS motto. If someone was part of an august organization, why would that organization have a motto that was pseudo-Latin? Take a look: *Dominus Obsequious Sororium* is pure rubbish. Analysis: *Obsequious* is an English adjective that happens to have a "-us" ending, and is easy to spot because there is no occasion in Latin that would have an "-ious" combination, and *Sororium* with the "-ium" case ending is incorrect for the feminine plural 3º declension, admittedly harder to catch.
Here's what it should have been: *Dominus Obesquiosarum Sororum* - Lord of the Obsequious Sisters.

I understand how they work. But you also have to learn how to tell the victims from the perpetrators. In our society, we act like white women women are only ever victims. When in Reality sometimes they are the perpetrators. Was Ghislaine Maxwell a victim of high control techniques too?
