Can’t wait to get my hands on the final released version. I was lucky enough to test one of the later stage prototype versions. Such an amazing grip and my favorite part is that I have a thumb grip and can still run around with my flash attached. Fantastic attention to detail and design. Congrats guys and wishing you nothing but success with this.
Looking fantastico! I guess I'd better get going (continuing) on the gear sell off and obtaining a Q3 so that I can order one! Thanks for the update Hugh! (and if Sharon and I can get enough done on the home items sell down this summer in prep for the eventual Italy relocation, I may finally be able to join up on the NYC Streets Workshop!)
Always great to have choices and the Leica community loves their add ons. My grips end up left at home on M, SL and S bodies to lighten the weight in hand, combined with some gym work to keep arms and hands strong to carry a camera all day. Good luck with the project, I too love to see beautifully, well thought out Leica gear and accessories.
Great stuff Hugh. I am delighted by your progress and intent. I look forward to placing an order, once you have an M10 solution (and are able to ship to the UK). I am certain this venture will be very successful for you !
Wow! This looks awesome. Very much thank you for adding the finger loop socket - and for making it better than the OEM socket location. The price is fine for me and I'm sure you will have zero issues getting the 100qty goal within minutes of your opening pre-orders. Really looking forward to this grip!
Congratulations on a very impressive product Hugh. Unfortunately, I don't have a Q or I would be buying one. I wish you great success in this new endeavour, and look forward to similar products for other Leica models. -Steve-
Interesting mix of great design, some features I love, some features i do not care about, and some that I miss (QD slot is a huge one here). Good luck with the product.
All we need now is a scheme to purchase the Q3 without our spouses finding out how much they cost and without impacting their budget. Solutions welcome 😂. Seriously Hugh what a great project and we wish you every success!
I'm not a customer for this grip, since I don't have a Leica, but I've been delighted by this whole thing regardless. I'm stupid and passionate enough to dare to buy one just for pride of ownership, so I have to restrain myself! 😅
Wish you the best. I hope you will consider the M series also. Good luck and congratulations. This need courage and dedication for a start up with such a niche market.
If there is any group of camera users who are used to overspending on parts, it is definitely Leica users. That snarkiness aside, I think your grip looks great.
I'm also really interested in the product - but need to be assured its fully compatible with the RRS equivalent , as the tolerance on the dovetail slide into any of the RRS heads seems to be unique.. I have several Arca type "L" brackets but none fit as well as the native RRS versions onto the large ball head !!...
We certainly can validate that to assure you; a quick test to assuage any concern you’d have would be if you have a Peak Design capture clip - if the adapter plate dovetail profile works, then the short answer will be in the affirmative. This also applies if you have a Peak Design Travel Tripod and find the plates interchange.
@@EdwardPalisoc The large RRS ball head relies on a cam action for its clamp,.. The size of the dovetail is critical to create a smooth locking mechanism. most of the other arca types rely on just a screw clamp, which can clamp anywhere, and sizing is not so critical. I hope this helps you in the development of this excellent sounding product.
@@john3LeeI am arranging to get an RSS clamp plate to test, but I can share this with you; from what information that is publicly available the RSS universal plate calls out the plate width to be 38.1mm. The He3 baseplate width is 38.8mm, which was purposeful to address what I considered a looseness between the OEM Peak Design capture clip adapter plate that comes with the clip, and the clip itself. I would imagine the RRS clamp would not have a functional precision so tight that it would not accommodate a sub 1mm difference, but I hope to be absolutely sure in short order.
I have received a RRS BR-60-II clamp, and it works beautifully with it, so much I am putting the clamp on my monopod. Slides smoothly along within the dovetail groove, and clamps firmly without any adjustment.
Will you explain how you will broadly announce the presale? Or should we just visit RUclips or a website for He3 ? I'll pony up the cash today i you'll just give me a fair shot at the first run. Nice video on your production and thoughts behind it.
Purchase price is $480 USD. Handling will be less than $10. Shipping, taxes and fees will be a function of geography, carrier and taxing authorities (we like FedEx and DHL; things like sales tax in the U.S. and VAT outside of the U.S. will be a function of taxing authorities). We will collect state sales tax in the U.S. at check-out; outside the U.S., collection and remittance of taxes and fees will be up to local authorities.
Not sure how well a $500 grip on a $1500 camera will sell. D-Lux 8 is aimed at the photographer who wants the Leica experience on a budget. I expect the D-Lux 8 shooter will be a bit more price sensitive than a Q3 shooter.
I understand your point; note that the thumb grip profile was driven by function, tactile feel, and ability to smoothly access the controls with the thumb, how the thumb moves and sweeps while holding the camera in use vs just holding it, etc. One consideration is that the thumb grip is a modular component that can be removed, replaced, reconsidered without requiring the rest of the handgrip to be affected. Function over compromise to adhere to an aesthetic is always an interesting discourse. Certainly one worthy of a dialogue with Carlo Scarpa and Mies van der Rohe.
@@EdwardPalisoc I hear you, and a difficult balance to strike when Leica's design language is decidedly not "ergonomic" in the blobby Canon sense at the expense of comfort, but it looks possible to "flatten" or round out the fillets where the thumb rest intersects with its support without affecting access to the dials or creating uncomfortable spots for the thumb. I could be wrong, but I'd encourage you to mess around with a few ideas in that area and see if a more beautiful balance can be struck. The other area of concern I'd have is with the finger loop thing. After using a Peak Design micro clutch, I'm all about the concept, but I could imagine that being either uselessly too big or too small-or in the wrong place-depending on hand-size. I have large hands and my micro-clutch ends up needing to be positioned quite a ways forward of the hand grip. The freely-rotating strap anchor on the Peak Design design is genius and, I think, necessary. I don't have a good suggestion for you given other design choices you made, though. On the whole, this looks fantastic though-excited to see you raising the bar!
@@morgan-sutherland I see what you’re saying, and I’m happy to revisit it before we roll out - it’s an easy area to to re-sculpt and explore your suggestion!

I’m very interested to see what the final production model will look like after you finish tweaking it as Leica has a particular design aesthetic.

Excellent piece of equipment, but I am sure you know that it was not the Leica Cl, but the M5 which could - as a first - be carried vertically.
