I found your channel yesterday and I've binge watched so many of your videos since! All I can say is keep up the good work dude! This channel is such a great alternative to all the other tech channels out there that consider "budget" stuff anything around ~£500/£750 when budget PC's for a lot of people means spending literally peanuts.
Have you tried re-flashing the BIOS? I once had a dying motherboard (3 years ago) and by re-flashing the BIOS it started working correctly again and it's still working (Even with OC since it's an ASUS one)
As others have said, there appear to be bulged/leaking capacitors on the motherboard. These are probably giving intermittent problems, but they are relatively easy to remove and replace.
I did the same with an almost 10 years old Athlon 64 4600+ build. I had it mated to an HD7870 and I was able to play Rust (1 year ago) at 720p with lowest settings at around 22fps while recording. Today, for me a cheap build and sort of entry level gaming PC would be based on an AM2+ or AM3 platform with a Phenom II x4, 3+ GHz and a HD6xxx or 7xxx series graphics card (around 1.5+ TFLOPS). There's tons of used hardware on auction platforms like Ebay and it is actually pretty easy to build a game worthy
even though you primarily talk about gaming and these old systems.. I get inspiration on using some old components to make interesting simple computing set ups for web browsing and the like.. Thank you.. always appreciate the reviews
I'm using a similar setup as my main gaming Pc (while saving for a current pc), I built it entirely on used parts. It features a Core 2 Duo e4400 overclocked at 2.5ghz, 3gb of ddr2 ram, and a Radeon HD 6850. I play CS GO at the lowest settings at 1280x1024 (I use an old Dell monitor) and it runs at around 65fps on average. Thats mainly because I followed a guide on steam about increasing performance in older hardware, and it worked pretty well (the game ran at 40 fps). Other games I've tested are Far Cry 3 (25 fps on average, on low), Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 (flawless 60fps at 1600x900, I took my pc to the living room and connected it to my TV)
Well I can say that my older 2010 AMD build still runs today, which includes an overclocked Athlon II X2 250, an MSI HD 4350 GPU, and 8GB DDR3, all connected to an MSI 760GM-E51 motherboard. Can't wait to see if I can live up to 2020
I think that motherboard is perfectly repairable. The only thing you need is some proper capacitors from an electronic store (I suggest the ones produced by Elna, Nippon-Chemicon, Nichicon or some others, these things can work for YEARS) and someone who knows how to use a soldering iron (and has got one). If I remember correctly, this is actually a very common breakdown point of older motherboards. And that's another candidate for a 771 Xeon mod! :D Oh, and FYI, there's a theory that TF2 lowers its CPU power demands when you bump up some graphical settings. It's probably because the old type rendering settings tend to put more pressure on the CPU, while new ones tend to use GPU more.
Hey, Team Fortress 2 does support DirectX 8, the only difference, is that decorated weapons (skins) show as stock, and competitive mode is not compatible, but it still can play.
I was still using an hd6670 paired with a phenom ii x4 956 until a few months ago. Did me fine in any game i wanted since 2011. Was playing at 720p though. I miss my old components maybe ill put the pc back together and do some overclocking.
Hey there @RandomGaminHD , I had a Pentium 4(socket 775 with Hyperthreading) that no matter what I tried I couldn't get Windows to install on it. I did the same as you did and installed on a similar machine core2duo then switched the drive. I expected the same thing that it would die... nope... she still runs the same... though now she has Core2Quad-extreme hehe... still have to switch the stupid drive... oh well haha... And I would like to tip my hat to you Sir, I really enjoy your videos as you fairly well & consistently capture the REAL World of Gaming PC Builds or like I aptle title your builds as "THE AVERAGE JOE'S GAMIN'BOX'". Woohoo thanks for that... ...And Remember, GAME ON! Farley318
You could buy a capacitor kit and replace the capacitors. Huge pain in the butt, but it'll give you something to do for a couple hours and may give 5-10 more years on the mobo. Bad caps can cause ram to look like it's failing (slot specific) among a whole host of other problems.
problem is the hideous core 2 duo it has, its probably one of the first since it wont go past 2.ghz, give it a 2008 core 2 duo 2.7ghz + and might shine again
Try putting a q6600 in even if it dosent say its compatible I've experienced some older motherboards that didn't have it listed as compatible but I popped one in and it worked the optiplex 745 case is a perfect example
Looks like the pair of caps at 0:41 on the left side of the cpu sink is bulging. That could be the issue with the board. I myself have an old s478 mb with the same cap issue.
Tbh you could have pushed for higher resolutions on Overwatch so the GPU and CPU keep pace because it was pretty clear from the afterburner results that the GPU could have been a potato 98% of the time and you really wouldn't notice. AFAIK, resolution is much more GPU bound than CPU, although I'm probably wrong on that...
That is so weird. I used to play Dota2 on high settings with 1280x720 resolution using Core2Duo E4500+4GB-DDR2 and HD5550 but I never got it that low. I usually hang around 40-50fps. Only reached 60+ on the dark areas.
I know and I am saying that I had 40-50fps on Dota2 on high settings on my Core2 system back then. It was less optimized before unlike today where a setup like core2 E6300 with 6670 with DDR5 should be playing Dota2 on normal settings in 1080p easy.
what's the model? I think I have the same one at home. With a burnt trace from which the outer DRAM slot doesn't work. Really wasn't surprised to see "dying motherboard" and "Foxconn" in one sentence/video.
I can probably see why your mb is dying. Those 3 big capacitors, between parallel port and closest to cpu socket, seem to have gone bad. Find replacements, and re-solder them, takes 10-15 mins to finish, and board will work with no problem after that, if it doesnt have any other issues, you can even use different brand of capacitors. If you cant find ones with exact values (voltage, capacitance)as originals, get some that are above listed on originals, but not lower. Fixed alot of ''dying'' PC's over the years.
Hey random gaming do you think buying a Optiplex 790 OEM motherboard then a I3 2120 and 8gb of ram i already have 4, and then a GTX 660 and 430w psu all for about 100$ would be a good investment for a gaming pc.
I think it's a bad deal, since the i3 2120 is fairly bottom end and you'd have to replace the CPU most likely. While the socket has a upgrade path, I'm sure Dell has some restrictions on BIOS support. The 660 isn't bad but I think you'd want at least one step above. 430w PSU depends on the brand, but tbh I'd personally go with a bigger one to have headroom to use one of the old cards that raise your electricity bills. I don't know which kind of budget you have, so it's difficult to give you a proper recommendation, but here are some tips: 1. If you're on a really tight budget, I'd recommed going with a 1156 socket i5 possibly i7 (some Xeons also fit) or AMD (Phenom II), so you sacrifice the upgrade path but save bucks for other components. 2. GPU wise, I would suggest going for a GPU around 50$, something like a R9 280 should be available at that price point. 3. Check which RAM you have and if it's compatible... I know, it's a pain in the rear.
Look at the GPU usage. you could easily turn up graphics settings and keep the same framerate, because the GPU isn't even close to stressing itself here.
RandomGaminginHD, you made it seem like the pc was a sickly person that your going to spend sometime with before their end came near. Sad for the pc but funny Because...
I think I have the same problem in Cs go as this system. I'm rocking an i3-540, 4gb 1333mhz ddr3 and an Ati Radeon HD 4670 265mb. No matter what resolution I have, I'm always getting something between 60 and 30. I've tried everything with it, but nothing seems to work. The weirdest part is that I've seen csgo running on over 100fps on even older and worse systems :S
Hey RandomGaminginHD, I have been looking into getting a budget monitor recently of around $100, mainly for gaming. I found the Asus VX229H and was wondering if you think this would be a good choise, or if you know of a better option?
it's a shame to not see a test on League of legends. While I don't play it anymore, it'd be nice to see the framerate from a cheap old computer. back in 2011 when i had no idea about pc gaming i got league and played it on my very old single core sempron desktop with shitty integrated mobo graphics and 2gb and somehow managed 20fps. it seems like any pc can run league at the very least
Heyo RandomgaminginHD, I was wondering if you could do add a game into your benchmarks for low spec systems, I'm trying to build my younger brother a PC that can play Orcs must Die: Unchained. its free to play, and a great game for those on a budget. I just don't know a lot about computers so I don't know how well it would run.
This isn't a motherboard, it's a grandmotherboard.
WHY JUST WHYYYYYYYYY
it's not even that, this Motherboard is just cheap trash...
If the mobo dies, you can try to replace the capacitors, its not too difficult and its very cheap
Assuming that's why it's dead, sure.
@0:42 3 leaking capacitor next to the cpu cooler. :)
It is... you can see bad capacitors
near the vrm area.
0:44 i spot 3 bad caps
liked to help make this top comment
2:32 you know your bottleneck is bad when your gpu usage hits 0% when gaming
That blue color brings back memories😃
that gpu usage on overwatch
hambone56789 yeah no idea what happened there
RandomGaminginHD when the cpu bottlenecks a game so badly the gpu can't do anything
It gave up after it realised the CPU was from 2006
Huge cpu bottleneck this system will see much better days with Overclock or a core 2 quad
The cpu was so slow it couldn't send instructions to the gpu so the gpu did nothing.

TheMalvage looking at the motherboard you can see the capacitors are blown.
can by the dimm really splooged lol

Capacitors are always the first thing to die. That's why I love me some all solid capacitor boards, like from Gigabyte.
There's a spelling error in the description, it says "Sometimes it better to use it" it would be sometimes it's better to use it

how do you know the motherboard is dying?

Fensta look for bulged capacitors
RWL2012 what are bulged capacitors?
those battery looking things on the left of the cpu at around 0:44

Sentimental with your pc parts. Same here. If it works I have to put it to use doing something.

You could replace the Capacitor's, most Military Grade capacitor's are only rated for a minimum lifespan of 10 years.
This is what I call Random Gaming
in HD....
You could buy a capacitor kit and replace the capacitors. Huge pain in the butt, but it'll give you something to do for a couple hours and may give 5-10 more years on the mobo. Bad caps can cause ram to look like it's failing (slot specific) among a whole host of other problems.

why am i suddenly sentimental for a motherboard ?

you should do a live stream or something until the motherboard dies.
RandomGaminginHD Erm.. Hi thanks for the vids. where did your title intro go? the coffee coloured one with the cool bass riff.
Try putting a q6600 in even if it dosent say its compatible I've experienced some older motherboards that didn't have it listed as compatible but I popped one in and it worked the optiplex 745 case is a perfect example

You could have went for 720p screen res for CS GO
Replacing the capacitors would be a good idea.
Yes thank you for testing dota 2 finally
Take care of that mobo dude. RESPECT
If the fps doesn't change when the resolution decreases (hence decreasing the GPU load) then its the CPU that is limiting your fps.
And here I am still rocking a q8200 5gb DDR2 and HD6750 1GB GDDR3
The e6600 is the bottleneck here. The lowest you should go is like an e8500, but even that is slow.
Hang in there, tiny motherboard
Omg your channel have grown fast
Have you done a Video about the A8 6600K ? would like to see one. Maybe paired with a 750 ti. (oh really again?! yes, again!)
Wish you had the hardware information since I check ebay for prices
Tbh you could have pushed for higher resolutions on Overwatch so the GPU and CPU keep pace because it was pretty clear from the afterburner results that the GPU could have been a potato 98% of the time and you really wouldn't notice. AFAIK, resolution is much more GPU bound than CPU, although I'm probably wrong on that...
hopefully I'll see you all in the nex-
That motherboard looks a lot like my old P35 mobo I had with my old Core2Duo e8400.
I remember when i played cs go in 2014 with this same CPU and Radeon HD 3650 512MB in 70fps...
change the blown capacitors on the motherboard, they are the most likely to cause instability
That is so weird. I used to play Dota2 on high settings with 1280x720 resolution using Core2Duo E4500+4GB-DDR2 and HD5550 but I never got it that low. I usually hang around 40-50fps. Only reached 60+ on the dark areas.
Vince Velasquez Dota is a lot more gpu and waaay more cpu demanding since the reborn update.

god the 6670 is what was in my original prebuilt that my current computer evolved from
i am laughing when you play dota 2 and i dont know why btw all of your videos is great cheers
what's the model?

Totally. It should be completely fine as long as the PSU is reliable. Also just make sure to get the correct kind of RAM for your CPU and motherboard.
Thanks
I think it's a bad deal, since the i3 2120 is fairly bottom end and you'd have to replace the CPU most likely. r9 280 alright ill see what i can do
i see buldging capacitors. with 5 min, a dollars worth of replacements and a soldering pen.
Heroes of the storm would be a nice title to add in the tests.
Look at the GPU usage. you could easily turn up graphics settings and keep the same framerate, because the GPU isn't even close to stressing itself here.
2:33 Looks like the GPU took a nap and let the CPU take over
RandomGaminginHD, you made it seem like the pc was a sickly person that your going to spend sometime with before their end came near. Sad for the pc but funny Because...
I will just say this, you can replace the bloated caps near the cpu and the board could last for years.
#MotherboardLivesMatter
WTF just did i see
You did take my break time by me watching this amazing video.
I have the same motherboard...
oh-oh
sad
Ziimbiian. I have one too.I had a Gigabyte one before it and it fried itself. The Foxconn one is 9 years old and it's still rocking
Swapping in a HDD with Win 10? That's a sure-fire way to have a PC that ISN'T optimized.
I think I have the same problem in Cs go as this system. I'm rocking an i3-540, 4gb 1333mhz ddr3 and an Ati Radeon HD 4670 265mb. The weirdest part is that I've seen csgo running on over 100fps on even older and worse systems :S
The motherboard probably just needs some new capacitors
The graphics on overwatch was intense
Hey RandomGaminginHD, I have been looking into getting a budget monitor recently of around $100, mainly for gaming. I found the Asus VX229H and was wondering if you think this would be a good choise, or if you know of a better option?
There are some good cheap monitors from acer on amazon i suggest looking at those also.
it's a shame to not see a test on League of legends. you must change the capacitors near cpu....and mobo will work normally
Would change the c2d for core 2 quad
Still better than my i3 540 with no gpu and 4 gb ram
rip in peace sweet prince
I shed a manly tear at the title....
In overwatch dropping the resolution wasn't going to help much, cpu was pegged.
2:52 Ohh that CPU bottleneck.
can you make a video about the gt520 ?
it's my graphics card , and i would to know your thoughts about it
