    Try just cleaning the contacts on the IBM hard drive or changing their pressure. This may cause them to click, and yes video is great)

      I have had drives in the past that acted strange due to PCB/HDA connection, so I always try that on drives that are bad and have pins pushing on the PCB. It made no difference here sadly.

      @@NelsonBigGunP200Fan I'll be honnest I have no clue, but even if I did I'm pretty sure swapping things on these would be way less likely to actually work compared to MFM drives for exemple.

    Deltarune OST on HDD heads is something I wasn't expecting on seeing lol.

      I wasn’t sure on what to use, but deltarune music is great, it is recognizable even if the quality isn’t good, and it can be used without getting copyright claims.
      If you have a pile of dead drives, you can give this a try, but don’t expect it to sound any good :)

    At 10:00 that's what I always imagined a failed hard drive to sound like with the repetitive clicking motion.

    • @arnlol
      @arnlol  8 месяцев назад

      Well yeah they can do that, but the way drives sound just varies and sometimes drives die but don’t make any clicking as well, it just depends on what drive it is as well as why it died.

  • @cdos9186
    @cdos9186 8 месяцев назад +1

    Wow amazing job with the video! Not sure how you get them done so fast, I assume that takes a lot of time to record each drive and then test every one of them etc. I was surprised how many ended up dead, especially the IBM Deskstar since that one had a parking ramp and had a good chance of survival in my opinion. Was not expecting three drives with bad PCBs especially the Western Digital and the SP0411N, but the MPG shouldn't have been a surprise. Also on the MPG it does exactly what all of mine with bad main ICs do, the main controller chip shorted and I'm sure you can very faintly hear the two ticks which normally happen before the spindle starts, but nothing happens. Also wow that had to have taken a lot to kill that IBM H3171-A2, I have never seen one of those fail!

    • @arnlol
      @arnlol  8 месяцев назад +1

      Well recording the first spinup doesn’t really take longer than just spinning the drives up which I do anyways. Yes testing the drives takes time though of course here only 3 worked so it didn’t take that long. Right now the hard drives is literally my life so yeah…
      The lot was sold as bad but I still was surprised as well, maybe because the previous bad lots went decently before, I expected more of the drives to work but just have bad sectors.
      I don’t know about that one ramp IBM, I think it’s a 60GXP so it should be reliable but yeah that one is dead.
      The MPG does make the ticking sounds from the motor, I think it might be audible on the video. The spindle motor chip gets super hot on the Samsung, but the WD's PCB stays completely cold.
      I really thought that H3171-A2 was the most likely drive to work, as early IBMs like this are supposedly really reliable, but this one didn’t make it.

    • @cdos9186
      @cdos9186 8 месяцев назад

      @@arnlol That is odd, did you notice any internal damage on the 60GXP at all? That is a lower end 20GB model, but it still surprised me it died. Those are supposed to be able to take up to 400Gs of shock before damage to the drive occurs, and IBM focused on shock protection very well with those. Those do still use glass platters but I couldn't tell if any of the heads on the actuator were bent or not, as if you recall my 20GB 75GXP one died from a head getting torn off due to horrendous handling and the drive actually died during the self-test which was incredibly sad if I didn't mention before.
      If I get enough bad Fujitsu MPGs, I will actually probably end up making a video on them. It won't be too interesting of course, but it will be good documentation, in my opinion. So look forward to that at a future date if you are interested at all.
      That Samsung probably had a bad power supply kill the PCB, as you have seen happen recently with that SATA Maxtor I talked about that the Molex to SATA adapter fried, same thing, but instead the main controller chip gets insanely hot too. I hope you can fix the drives with bad PCBs one day, it would be awesome to have them do anything at all and I wonder if you anticipate testing them later! Super happy you picked up this lot once again, you are saving drives, documenting them, and making interesting content : ))

  • @SappinSentry
    @SappinSentry 7 месяцев назад +1

    I've always wondered and you seem like a great person to ask, but what causes click of death? The platters look undamaged at a glance, do the read/write heads just go bad and have issues picking up the data?
    It feels strange knowing I've replaced many drives like this and done other wack stuff in my tenure in consumer PC repair but I never found this one out....

    • @arnlol
      @arnlol  7 месяцев назад +1

      Honnestly I don't know, I think it can be from a lot of different issues, like damaged platters, damaged heads, dead head amplifier, issues on the PCB, and probably more. I like to mess with old drives for fun but I don't really know why a dead drive has failed unless there's something obvious like a ripped off head or very damaged platters.

  • @mikixyz123
    @mikixyz123 2 месяца назад

    Not gonna lie, I think the ST33223A might have a bad PCB. Cuz if the heads would be bad, it'd likely click, and if it would be fine, it'd do it's seektest, right?

      I have drives even worse than this that I got to boot Windows though it took a lot of time to get the sectors marked as bad. The WD here has a lot of bads at the start of the drive, so I left 480MB of unused space at the start and created the partition after that. The rest of the drive has a lot of slow sectors but the bads don't get past about 10% for now.

    • @arnlol
      @arnlol  8 месяцев назад +2

      Every modern drive parks the heads on shut down, older drives like the ones in this video parked the heads in a dedicated area near the spindle where no data is stored, newer ones park the heads on a ramp outside the platters. The drives that do not auto park are most stepper based ST-412 (MFM/RLL) drives and some very early stepper based IDE/SCSI ones. As far as I know voice coil drives always had auto park.
