As someone whos seen the wholesale price lists from euro MFGs, its not overwhelmingly remarkable this was sold at a profit, its just more telling how much the US market gets upsold based on hype and fear mongering.
While theres obviously costs associated with 922r and imprort tax ect, the markups on import AKs are entirely disproportionate
i think also just the availability also plays a role into as well but you are right, in a recent interview the psa owner even basically said this, as they are pretty much completely vertically integrated they know exactly how much everything costs and its not that their guns are cheap but so much as everyone else puts a crazy markup

Mine has been absolute garbage... 4 different types of ammo, 3 different types of mags. Couldn’t get through 3-5 rounds a mag. It would fail to feed, not go into battery and so on. Emailed Pioneer and haven’t heard a word back. Im happy yours has been doing well.

Ive had a underfolder 7.62x39 pioneer that has been 100% with over 3k rounds through it so far
I have a cast with the same round count. It's been flawless. Just wish 7.62 ammo would be cheap. But 556 is cheaper than AK ammo 😢
I have a cast sitting at 6500. Bolt is beat up but trunnion looks new with minor peen on carrier tail. Their castings held up. But if that bolt clearances itself too much they wont... I don't shoot it. Gonna mill the rivet heads and pull it apart for forged stuff, maybe goodies. Idk. Gun didn't break like I thought it would so it's earned love getting put into it.

I would advise to stick with Jack. P.A is terrible company. Quality in their guns can vary a lot.
honestly it's closer to an AK-74 than an AKM just because of the caliber but for sure it looks really great for only 500 bucks

Klay, I just want to say. After some issues I've had with the Pioneer Arms Trainer I purchased for my kids, their customer service is absolutely amazing. Those guys down there at Pioneer Arms in Florida know their stuff, they're personable, down to Earth, ready to geek out with you over the phone, and super helpful at getting your rifle back to working condition. Love those guys and look forward to buying this rifle.
I always found buying a cheap gun and customizing it was more fun than buying a top of the line pre-built range queen.
the most fun i had was upgrading my 200 dollar maverick 88 with the mossberg 500/590 action slide and everything else i put on it

Its 100% more fun. My unfun guns are defense guns, though. Those are meant to be simple and elegant, not the monstrosities i bring to the range
These have had broken trunions in the past, so maybe buying a wasr or m70 is a better idea.

I remember 10 years ago when I could walk into my LGS and get an AK for $450. Heck I got a Siaga for $350 at a gun show. The market just ain't that it used to be.
It makes me sad how I missed the boat on $350 saigas. They are $2k++ rifles now.
Buddy picked up a zastava zpap92 back in 2010 for like $500 at a gun show. Kicking myself for not jumping on one back then. Back when ARs were $1000 and cases of 7.62 surplus could be had for a song. How times have changed.
Got mine for around $400 at Dunham's. New in box in 2004. Made a number of improvements and compliance mods and now I've been told it could fetch well over what I bought it for. It almost makes me not want to shoot it often, even though I know I'll never part with it. 🥲
Stock build AR's used to be like $900 and now they're $349. Glock used to be $600 now you can get any other polymer copy that's better for $349 as well. So some things shifted in good directions. But not everything, unfortunately 😞

I’m so glad you did a review on this rifle. I got the sporter version with a fixed stock last year put a 74 brake on it and have no complaints. I have a collections of AK variants, a ban era WASR 10, Draco, AES10B, Saiga 308 w/16” barrel, Saiga 308 w/21” barrel, Saiga 12 w/18” barrel, Saiga 12 w/23” barrel, Galil ARM, and finally got a 5.56 AK when I bought the Pioneer Arms sporter. It made a great addition to my collection and it was nice to save some money when everything else is so expensive. It shoots straight, hasn’t jammed, and has no felt recoil with the 74 brake. I’m glad I’m not the only one that was pleasantly surprised with Pioneer Arms.

Amazing video!! My 7.62 forged version has been a solid rifle. I wish the video featured the 7.62, but this video is a great reference to the quality Pioneer is pushing out on their rifles. Came zeroed from factory, amazing finish, and so far perfect reliability. Only complaint I have is that they definitely have very tight magwells. I Will definitely need to add the 5.56 to my collection. Thank you for this excellent video!!

With the circle 10 mags they have to be broken in to get them great. I’ve used them primarily with it and have put in probably 1200 rounds. Had some issues at the beginning and after 500 was flawless. No flaws ever with the Polish mags or the Bakelites with pod followers. Great video!

I’m old enough to remember the hate for the early Norincos, SARs and WASRs, including thin receiver sheet metal, loose mags and no mag well dimples. People said they were crap. Likewise, I think people will look back when the new PAs were an incredible deal.
Looks like a fun time! Try it with one of those side-rails that attach with the trigger pins.

Definitely grab one friends. I got a RAS47 a couple years back and looked it over closely from a smith point of view and that thing was lower end quality by all means. Watch out for parts made from PIM casting, PIM (Powder Injected Molding) parts do not have close to the same strength as milled steel parts and on the RAS47 they use them on the front sight assembly, gas block, rear stock to receiver block and some of the trigger parts. You can easily exchange these parts if you get a RAS dirt cheap but as we know, it’s not easy or cheap depending on your skill level and what you pay for parts. The operating rod wasn’t fully machined and mostly in rough cast condition. So I mention all this to show what another company sells as their entry level AK compared to what we’re seeing in this video, it’s night and day difference!

Major shoutouts and thank you for getting this rifle and making this video. I'm an ak noob especially when it comes to the 5.56 variants, but I literally have been waiting for a cheap but still reliable underfolder 5.56 ak simply for a fun gun. One I can just grab with other non-ak 5.56 firearms when going pew pewing so I only gotta worry about bringing 1 type of ammo. (rifle ammo at least)
I will say anecdotally, though expensive, FB’s AKs are worth (some) of the markup. I wish they were a bit cheaper, but man it runs and the fit and finish is great

I purchased a 7.62 * 39 model last year and the main issue I had with it was after loading the first round you could not physically get the bolt to open up you had to Boot Hill the bolt handle. After that it was fine it did this every time on the first round for 500 rounds. I know AK expert so I don't know what the problem was I guess I just wore it in eventually must have been the Locking lugs were out of spec

I have many forged 5.56 hellpup and 16" forged 5.56 pioneer AK videos on my YT. trying to spready the word but SO MANY HATERS talking shit, saying they are junk. Finally someone with internet pull shares to the word what I've been loving since last year!
They're so good, I still have the pic of the test you put the 16" through lol.
I dig it. If you aren't an AK snob, it looks like a functional piece. I like the idea of 5.56, it gives you more practical options.
We need more people like you. Showing us the truth. Not going off what you have heard. We need a nice lower priced ak on the market for us that cant spend 1to 3k on a an AK.
For Red Dot, put on Attero rear sight piccatiny rail. It's solid and easy to install.
Under folders are great for cheek space and getting your eye on the irons

Pioneer is putting in the work. These are great budget AKs. Higher quality fit and finish than wasr's. They are great.

You could get one that's totally fine to put a couple thousand rounds through it, you could get one that grenades after 600 because the trunnion was made of chinesium. They get a bad rap from Reddit when they first released because the trunnions were cracking before 500 rounds in a majority of them. Between that and bolt carrier groups breaking hammer tails off it's no wonder why people don't recommend them
There are cast models and there are forged models. There's a big difference between the two. Cast models sell for 400$ forged are 550-600$
AK sub is great but the hive mind is unbearable. Make your own decisions based on the available data. Klay doing gods work here.

I’m about 1500 rounds deep into my forged pioneer ak with only 2 failure to extracts. I’ve even made 2 hits out of 10 rounds on a 12x20 plate at 400 yards with it. I’m thoroughly enjoying it. Mags kinda suck though
To keep with the beater ak theme. Try the ME (military equipment) railed top cover.
I ended up getting one of these from Atlantic for a good deal. Functions well so far.
But....the accuracy. Holy smokes. I can't print anything better than minute of barn door at 100 yds with anything other than 77 gr, OTM.
My old kit build Romy 7.62 AK prints about 4-5 MOA with dumpster fire steel case.

I was rooting for this rifle. I don't own any cheap ak's but if cheap ones do well, might make the expensive new production ones I like be easier on the wallet.
For optics mounting, Texas Weapons Instruments supposedly makes Pionner Arms compatible "Dog-leg" rails that replace the dust cover.

I've heard some people have filed on it to make it better. But I really don't like the idea of modifying the gun to fit mags.
I've been waiting for you to shoot one of these. I knew there was potential for the Pioneer Arms rifles because I had one in my possession that i bought for a friend, and I swear......there were many points on it that were superior in quality to my Arsenal SLR106(pretty sure i've gone over this with you before). One thing I've learned about the gun community is we are the worst at judging new stuff without having actually judged it for ourselves. It also doesn't help the fact that people expect an American version to be as flawless as the originals, even though the years of R&D was paid for by the state on the originals......decades ago (Ok so maybe that is one thing we can say thats positive about collectivism lol).

My wasr3 had a really tight mag well, I took a dremel to it and opened her up a little bit, now she takes wbp and psa mags. Need to get some other ones and put it thru the ringer.

When I was shooting my BCA 7.62x39 AR upper suppressed, I would have some feeding issues but only with some magazines and it was more likely to happen when the gun got dirty and dry of course.

Of my ((10)) black mags the gap between the feelings tighter than other mags and the bolt will actually drag Inbetween the feed lips and cause malfunctions by almost short stroking and not feeding properly. This has happened even with Arsenal’s. I’ve had the best of luck with beryl or Polish (wbp) pattern mags

They might have had a talk with Polish manufacturers who have their act together and know well and good how to screw around with and tune those AKs.

The Attero mount is a no go on my sporter. Mine isn't a underfolder but my bravo mount will not mount flat on the rear sight block.
I picked up the 20 inch sporter from Pioneer recently for $520, zero regrets! No failures after a couple of range trips (300 rounds), pretty wood furniture and the sights were perfectly aligned, no canting :). All in all a great a training AK, heck I might even hunt with it

I picked the 20” up also. Their customer service is among the best I’ve ever dealt with. I called and asked if it came with the club foot RPK style stock and was told yes. I get a call back an hour later from the same rep and was told sorry but it doesn’t come with that stock, however since I told you it did we will throw it in for free. Pioneer arms employs veterans that do the 922r compliance work. After that experience I’ll definitely be a repeat customer. The rifle is perfect with no canted sights, the rivets are perfect and I’m sure since they are forging their rifles now that I’ll get plenty of life out of it. Personally, I think these are what wasrs were 20 years ago. Everyone used to hate on wasrs and now everyone loves them. Time will tell but I hope pioneers reputation grows.

Pick up a "UTG PRO" front hand guard. it has a picatinny rail. I mounted a HOLOSUN he-403c-gr on it works great.
Thinking about it, if the muzzle threads are standard, the Wz.88 brake should fit them, right? It's a Polish brake so that's kinda fitting.

I posted mine on reddit a few months ago and got trashed lol. But i love the gun. You said you might put an Attero Bravo mount on yours. Contact Attero first before you order. I had to send mine back and they replaced it with a custom one. The sight block is a little different than a standard AK.

I used to buy these by the crate at $69 a piece sometimes $89 a piece in multiple unit crates full covered in cosmoline , never fired And before the laws changed we could buy guns like this for dirt cheap in a newspaper ad , we used to sell them in the newspapers until the laws changed, 40 plus years ago it was super fun and cheap to buy bulk guns and the looser laws made it easy to sell these things at a flea market, it’s a shame that the idiots of the world had to ruin things for those of us who never had a bad intention or mental illness issue . This thing you got in 5.56 will only get better the more you shoot it, good value for todays market

“Those days” were changed deliberately by our government. They either “create” mass situations or they look the other way and “somehow” things just happen. If people did their jobs there would be no events and wed have our rights. The constitution doesnt talk about background checks or FFLs. The newspaper/flea market days should come back.
