  • When you interview with a hiring manager, do you sit there and wonder what they think of you? Of course you do.
That's why we arranged a mock interview with a sound designer and a hiring executive at Turbine, a developer of massively multiplayer online role-playing games, wholly owned by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.
Participating in the interview are Sound Designer Tyler Piersall, who previously worked as an audio assistant at now-defunct LucasArts, and Craig Alexander, Turbine's Vice President of Product Development.

The interviewer's analysis was spot on.
*Not having a portfolio is a major bummer. Comes off as lazy. As an interviewer the first thing you wanna do before/after is check out the candidate's work
*There's nothing wrong with "straying from the subject", you appreciate when a candidate opens up and a story or talks passionately about something, instead of just thinking "what should I say to get me hired".

Most interviewers spend time asking candidate's about their agile experience. I think it's mostly a waste of time. Sure it's nice to get someone who knows exactly what to do on the morning scrum and the sprint planning. But if they don't have those skills it's not like it takes any serious time to learn. Most people will get the concept right away just after a few minutes of observing the other team members.
I don't think agile xp should be a deciding factor when picking new team members unless they are team leads.
The major challenges with agile is how the higher ups use it, getting stakeholders and PM:s to communicate, and making the entire organization get it.
But it's usually not anything difficult for members of the dev team to pick up.

If you are new to game development and have no experience then these tips are for you.
There is no internship for game development but I can give you one million dollar advice for free.
1)First, learn the clean coding and OOP concept (RUclips have all the information and knowledge you need ).
2)Second, participate in Game Jams if you have a 6-7 working project you are an experienced person. (itch io and there are much other game Jam website in which you can participate it have weekly, monthly projects ).
3)Try documenting your game and post it on Linkedin.
4)Finally, make a badass portfolio (in easy words you have to sell yourself ).
5)Don't apply directly at the big company try your local game development software house take at least 1 year of experience.
I hope this will help new developers.

Really excellent video all around - thx! I had the exact same reactions as the interviewer - Tyler did well, but missed the point when asked "who did you work with" (as an interviewer I usually clarify my question and give them one more chance when this happens), and for sure if you're an artist of any sort, you should always be thinking about leading with your portfolio.

I noticed when his roles in sound design, music, ADR, and foley were brought up the interviewer was a little put off by him being "A jack of all trades." I understand it's good to have a specialization but unless you're working for a big company, where multiple engineers play one role, isn't it normal to work in all roles? Or are Indie companies also hiring audio engineers for specific departments like voice over/adr, foley, & sound design / implementation? Just curious how the game audio industry works.

in smaller studios it helps to have multiple skills as they have to pay one person to do jobs of multiple people even with a bonus. This is not set in stone though and it depends on the project needs or studio approach.
Plus it does help to have some knowledge in other fields to communicate with the other departments properly. Like being in the design team and communicating with the technical team for example.

Gave a stock question "how important is sound design". Could of come up with a more interesting question or questions despite stating the obvious and obviously wanting the job. The guy is clearly talented, he could of been more confident as if he was the one interviewing the interviewer. Take charge and don't be afraid of what you have and don't have. Believe in yourself. Another factor is fitting in with the studio culture (some studios are more interested in this than others). At the end of the day, studios are usually looking for a very specifically shaped piece to fit into their jigsaw puzzle.
