I found a hidden track car gem a while back: I picked up an E82 2008 BMW 128i 6MT w/sport package for $4700. With a junkyard 3-stage intake manifold, OEM Euro intake & a tune the car put down an extra 27whp & 32wtq over stock in a car that only weighs a touch over 3000 lbs with a perfect 50/50 weight distribution. The N52 is reliable as an anvil and replacements are only about $1000. It’s a car that’s been doing very well in a few time attack classes that a lot of people overlook.
Yes yes yes. Just bought a 128i myself and it's incredible. Some camber plates and M3 front control arms will give you some decent camber, and 135i parts like brakes are an easy upgrade
I have a 328i with similar mods and built 2.5l Miata. They aren’t even in the same category in terms of speed. You need to modify nearly everything for the bmw to be a potent track car. And the aftermarket support isn’t there and is expensive A n52 128i in manual is super rare though and was what I was looking for before I bought my miata
I used to have a 128i with the M sport package and a manual. It was a gem to rev and cruise through the mountains. I sold it because of continual and expensive AC issues. I live in England and I spent 10K on The BBR stage two turbo conversion and yellow speed coilovers. Its 300 BHP and 270 WHP. I don't track my car so this was the easiest option for me. It doesn't feel aftermarket at all, it feels like Mazda built it. It's super fun. In USD it was around 13K and was worth every penny.
All builds are expensive with quality components. Reality is, now that you have all this in place, you should be able to rip that around the track for years reliably. Out of my price range, but that isn't your fault.
I built my 07 focus with the 2.0 duratec/mzr I installed Crane aftermarket cams, fswerks race header and exhaust, steeda intake, medieval pulley kit, autolite racing plugs, custom Dyno tune, massive speed systems Polly motor mounts, fswerks strut tower brace and a few other things lol it got expensive I had well over $10,000 in the motor alone lol intake manifold and injectors and fuel pump were next but the car got rear ended and written off
Got my C5 Z06 3 years ago for 17k with 60k miles knowing they were at the bottom end and boy I dont regret it! Its a sexy ass car but isnt as refined as my old S2K was... BUT ITS FAST! Im making 405 whp with just intake/headers/exhaust!
That’s so funny. I’m at $32K right now with my k swapped S13. And it’s NA! Definitely another $4K if I was going turbo. Build cost is accurate for those wanting a k swap.
I would like to see a track test between your car and an NC with a built 2.5l to see if the extra $10k is worth it. That a lot of money for “smoothness”.
Agreed. I feel like this whole video was just trying to justify the cost of the swap by finding any and all possible subjective reasons as to why it's better. I've had a k24 as a daily for a long time and while the motor is nice, it's not $12k nice. Especially just to get started, because let's be real, you're that far into it, why wouldn't you put a set of cams in the k24 along with whatever else you want to throw at it. It's what you would do to a 2.5 as well.
Worth remembering too that with an engine swap, and in fact swapping out any good standard parts, that you can sell those parts so it pulls the total cost down a bit.
Base c5 you can have a built track car for under $20k. The z06 generally isn't worth starting with given how much premium it carries for very little difference when done.
Good breakdown. I'm currently stuck between turbo charging my NB or replacing the motor with a K24A. Main issue is that I'm running a 1.6, there just seems to be more support for the 1.8 when it comes to driveline so I'm hesitent. An off the shelf turbo kit in the UK runs about 3.5k-4k. A JDM K24 can be had for about £1k and then the swap kit from KPower you have already went over. So it's 4k-5k turbo charge (room for unknowns) or £10-11k for a K swap.
Would be interesting to see lap times of this against a stock sports car of similar value, like the Cayman S you mentioned. I'd prefer the P car for resale and just simply because it's a better built product.
@@valkyrievillage3673 depends on the lifespan of the parts, typically, but yes. I find Japanese suspension parts wear out quickly, compared to German ones. Very broad opinion though.
I've got a fully forged 2.0 nc turbo with ported and polished head, running 0.6 bar, making a reliable 321bhp. Now done 30k miles, mix of track and road, with no problems. Total cost. the car =£15k Mods =£20k SO.... £35k final cost. Bang for bucks in my opinion.
350/370z is a relibale lowish cost option especially now. Not quite as fast as this swaped nc still with comp suspension/brakes/tires competent reliable and fun for much less. At stock c5/6 is best buck to speed ratio but tends to bleed money - mo speed mo moneys.
When you look at the price breakdown its actually not that bad, but if im honest i think the best value is buying someone else's project car and keeping a good budget aside to correct/change things to your tastes. This strategy also can go horribly wrong if you dont know what your looking at and are not diligent.
Best mid price bang for the buck is new exhaust manifold and install+exhaust cam on an NC2 engine. The BBR NC 200 kit is 3k. Another 1-1.5k for complete install. 45ish hp and 25 lb-ft seems like enough additional gains to me and you keep the revy NA 7200 redline, 7500 fuel cutoff engine. You can get an NC2 for 10k these days on the low end (I have one) so under 15l all in. 17.5-20k after bare minimum track upgrades (brakes, tires, suspension)
Really cheap power gain is exhaust header and a tune. 500 for a header and a few hundred extra for a tune and you get +15ish horsepower. Pads, suspension and new tires. That’s all I’ve done
How about doing a Honda EP3 5 stud, K24 6speed LSD, hybrid coldair intake, kpro ecu, PCI caster plates, Accord CU2 320mm twin pot brakes, Endless brakepads, Nangkang AR1 tyres & put it up against the Mazda NC. Keep modding it in the suspension area to see what improves track fun. Great budget option.
I'd love to see a k swap miata vs brz with similar builds. Maybe do the BRZ with a full interior, weigh it and get some noise readings on the road. Then strip it to the level of the miata and repeat. Just got my K24 swap 260z running and drove around the block. Got a lot of little things to fix, but I can't wait to rip it around the backroads and get it on the track. It should be a rocket, currently weighs around 2030lbs with a full interior, half a tank, no carbon, and no spare.
I agree, a Lotus is a good choice to spend 40k if you aren't doing serious track time with it. One crack in the clamshell and those things are done. This NC will be faster around a track than an elise and a replacement engine is under $1000 bucks! Two different worlds, two great cars
You can get an NA with a bad motor for a couple grand and K swap it total under 20k. And that is going all out, cams, exhaust, etc. I do love how much room the NC has for the intake though. That space is missing in an NA.
Toyota Altezza is another car that you can put multiple engine swaps to put in, from Chevy LS, toyota UZ V8, K-Series, and other engines. the car themself are light and handle like a go carts with right suspension parts.
I could not agree more guys .. build what you like and want and enjoy and dont think of the price 😉... cuz when i think about the fact im over 20k into a forged board over big turbo 1.6 now 1.7l 1991 na miata running 27-34psi low and high boost atm so around 400hp of sketchy azz fun ... and just like what yal build ... its for the nostalgic aspect of it and the feeling on the road and how you connect to the car and the blood sweat and tears and passion put i to a build so you can just have some fun ... 😁 you cant put a price on that (or ya dont want to cuz prolly be higher than i am atm 😅)..the fun and time is worth it imo .. yeah you can never get thag back out of it if you were to sell it , but i say who gives a rats azz , cuz when i build a car that in depth .. im doing it for myself not to sell 😅..anyways i will take my adhd azz on and quit rambling lol ... peace and love all, keep it rad, stay safe, and build on.. l8r alland keep having fun
K is the Way. I have the engine (k24a2), but I need to piece the swap kit together over time. Which might take a couple/few years. Hopefully I can save some money on certain items, but I'm guessing it will end up at around $10k either way.
I have just started the 2.5 swap & already its going crazy. I wanted to put cams in it & while it was at the engine builders he said, you better do rings then bearings ... I hate to think what the bill will be when he finishes it. I might have to leave the engine sitting in the corner of the shed for a couple of months, until I can sneak the install bill past my wife.
I love swaps and projects more than most. I'm building a K22 and swapping it into my s2k, but unless you really want a convertible, LOVE the K or the NC, I think you'd be just a better off with a NEW GR86. While the NC is a few hundred pounds heavier, with the 86 you do get a newer platform with plenty of aftermarket support.
Very nice project. But damn that is a lot of money. Just a Miata or frs with a decent set of tires, suspension and brake make fun track day cars. Less power for sure, but still fun.
Can't forget 2015-2017 mustang GTs. No need for extra power, just needs tires and minor suspension work, especially if you get a performance package car
The 2.5 has the same torque as hp and is incredibly reliable in stock form. It's not that hard to bolt up a turbo and make mid twos and have so much fun. The 2.5 is essentially the same motor that was in the 2.3 mazda speed. They just go forever under normal applications. That k swap is going to be maybe 5x more expensive. You can buy a 2.5 for 500$ vs more than. 12k minimum to do the k swap. The 2.5 is literally a DIY 1k swap.
25-30k s2000 still gives 10-15k to spare, and it will seemingly retain a lot of that value. I do love the idea of this car, but at that price its a hard buy.
I get that this car is about building a agile low power track car, and it would be a blast to drive if fast on track, but a less nimble and less free reving 350z or G35 would probably cut a better lap time for a lot less money without sacrificing reliability.
Correct. People fantasize about the engine from this into that chassis and wouldn't that be amazing. The 350/370z is an amazing chassis and it comes with an amazing motor. The only swap that really makes sense to me is a roller RX8 for 1-2k and then you can put a built rotary or LS into it for a fairly cheap complete project. E46 cars can also bolt in an N52 with a prebuilt harness. No engine mounts required. Cheap motor with a cheap 6 speed trans bolts onto that. You just need a custom driveshaft. They are getting over 270 to the wheels with simple mods. Then of course there are 8th and 9th gen Hondas which already are built for the K24. But there are lots of Hondas on this channel already.
Pre 2010, when I was planning on LSx swapping my S14, it made sense over an SR20DET/turbo KA24DE/etc. With the change in prices, K24 seems to be the way these days. I'm not sure I can fit in a Miata, but the BRZ/FRS/G86 is very tempting!
Isn't a better idea to swap the stock K24 balancer shaft oil pump for the K20A2 Type S pump? That pump is more capable of reliable high RPM operation, isn't it? Nice build by the way DP and PT. You made the best choice of engine for that Miata ;)

I admire you guys for doing that swap. The swap kit looks well put together.
I built my 07 focus with the 2.0 duratec/mzr I installed Crane aftermarket cams, fswerks race header and exhaust, steeda intake, medieval pulley kit, autolite racing plugs, custom Dyno tune, massive speed systems Polly motor mounts, fswerks strut tower brace and a few other things lol it got expensive I had well over $10,000 in the motor alone lol intake manifold and injectors and fuel pump were next but the car got rear ended and written off
Definitely saw that 40k price tag coming in for a complete build, have that into my kswapped EG
Another great series guys! Keep the awesome content coming
Still my favorite looking vette. I'm glad to hear you're enjoying it. =)
I own an NC and this swap would be ideal for me but I don't think I could justify it over a C5/C6. Awesome job on the build though! 👍
As a recent engine swapper (Ecotec NA Miata) the budget including all upgrades, swap, and car is quite reasonable for a sorted track weapon!
That’s so funny. I’m at $32K right now with my k swapped S13. And it’s NA! Definitely another $4K if I was going turbo.
Build cost is accurate for those wanting a k swap.
An Altezza build is way overdue.
I appreciate the transparency.
Only $40k is amazing for an all in sorted track car! Great job guys.
Corvette with tires is faster
I honestly appreciate the price transparency.
Always a great Saturday with a SA vid. Thanks for all the content fellas.
Thanks for the honesty! Amazing work. You look happy with the results ans you should be.
My fav maple out here convincing me to build a KNC.
Love this K swap NC!! I think it would be pretty cool to see a K swap RX8 😎
I'd love to see you compare a new sports car for the cost of your Miata.
People dinged me in a last video for saying this is not a budget build lol. This car is great but $40K is like C7 GS/F80 M3/987 Cayman S money.
Ya, but stock versions of those. This is a fully race ready car.
Would be interesting to see lap times of this against a stock sports car of similar value, like the Cayman S you mentioned. I'd prefer the P car for resale and just simply because it's a better built product.
"They called me a madman..."
But you save a ton in tires brakes and engine rebuilds so it’s actually cost affective, with the Miata
@@valkyrievillage3673 depends on the lifespan of the parts, typically, but yes. I find Japanese suspension parts wear out quickly, compared to German ones. Very broad opinion though.
GD. $55000 Canadian. That gets me a brand new ‘86 with money left over to play.
Still, that’s a well sorted, gorgeous NC
I've got a fully forged 2.0 nc turbo with ported and polished head, running 0.6 bar, making a reliable 321bhp.
Now done 30k miles, mix of track and road, with no problems. Total cost. the car =£15k Mods =£20k SO.... £35k final cost.
Bang for bucks in my opinion.
This is why I live vicariously through you guys. 😂. I want to be able to retire.
K24 is the way! Tsx here :)
I think spread out over a period of time that cost is more manageable. All at once is a tough number to swallow.
Agreed! Thats what makes this so awesome. $1000 replacement engine one a car that is essentially an s2000 but lighter
Would love to see a k in an FRS. Thanks for the content and always making my Saturday morning fellas.
14:30 YESSIR!!!
I would love to see that!
Awesome series, want more NC content and K-swaps!
Love you guys! Don't quite keep pushing
Love it! Thanks for giving us an idea of what the cost of the options are 👍
How about doing a Honda EP3 5 stud, K24 6speed LSD, hybrid coldair intake, kpro ecu, PCI caster plates, Accord CU2 320mm twin pot brakes, Endless brakepads, Nangkang AR1 tyres & put it up against the Mazda NC.
$40k seems insane but that’s racing. For me at that price a Lotus sounds like a good choice.
I agree, a Lotus is a good choice to spend 40k if you aren't doing serious track time with it. One crack in the clamshell and those things are done. This NC will be faster around a track than an elise and a replacement engine is under $1000 bucks! Two different worlds, two great cars
@@Samurai6936 when the elise motor blows, k-swap it too 😉
Sure a lotus is 40K but once you swap it it's going to be another 40k again on top
Definitely would watch a kswap frs series!
Looking forward to the K swapped FRS!
The other major factor (if you're not handy) is the cost of labour. That'd probably be at least another 10K for something like this
Yeah, builds like this aren’t something you’d want to pay someone else to do. Just buy a higher performing car at that point.
Probably more even. Labour would make ir a 60k car
K is the way to go but flying Miata for V8 swaps are nice too
K swap mr2 here. The Facebook marketplace deals are real
Would love to see a k-swap frs vs the k-swap nc at the track!
Holy shit that’s a lot of money!! But you have done everything the right way
Can't forget 2015-2017 mustang GTs. No need for extra power, just needs tires and minor suspension work, especially if you get a performance package car
yep this is a great combo. $40k honestly is a good value for what you get here in term of specs and build quality
Sick video! I would like to see a k swap FRS/brz
Miatas are famous for being comfy for big and tall drivers.
@@lilnapkin462 True story! I can just look over the windscreen, and duck if there's a roll-over. :)
@@CrappyCar ahahaha
Isn't a better idea to swap the stock K24 balancer shaft oil pump for the K20A2 Type S pump? That pump is more capable of reliable high RPM operation, isn't it?
Nice build by the way DP and PT. You made the best choice of engine for that Miata ;)
J swap would be cool to see.
