I like this method of cutting chambers is better than that which uses a router to cut out the material. This leaves you with a fair amount of scrap for other projects and is a lot less messy. Thanks for sharing your work mate!
Beautiful work. You had me up until the chambering part. When I finally get around to building a full size wood board I’ll either go wood over foam or just fat wood stringers, solid with foam in between. I tried one of Tom Wegener’s paulownia blanks (I shaped), but am thinking it’s more fun to not have to spend too much time building a blank. We’ll see. Haven’t made my mind up on that yet. I made some solid cedar paipo boards which were a lot of fun to make, and ride. Might make a solid longboard too one day. Maybe stuff some foam inside of it. 11’ pintail on my mind.
Because I’m in south Florida and it’s just to hot. Today with the heat index it’s 105. At 58 that’s to hot for me. I sold everything and now I just watch.

Man, I thought this looked like some goofy stuff until you unscrewed the pieces after shaping, hollowed it out, and put it back together. Really nice. But, dude, wear a mask when sanding, especially power-sanding. It looks like you are going to be spending a good part of your life sanding. (Perhaps I merely envy your dust-control system.) We though wood fiber was harmless, but now know better, especially if you have dried or drying glue or epoxy, etc. Otherwise, good art demands both concept and realization, and you checked both boxes on this beautiful surfboard.
Russell Cole thanks mate, I wear dust mask when hand sanding. I have a air filtration system over head, a fan to blow the dust away from me and my belt and orbital sanders are connected to a cyclone shop vac system and its pulls extremely well. I really don't have much dust

Great workmanship and would enjoy owning one, my only complaint here were extremely poor safety presentation re no resperatory device, such as a dual cartridge mask when sanding, no eye protection, nor even the proper cartridges for the mask when using epoxy, as a former safety rep and spray painter at Disney in Anaheim I would have thought a presentation such as this would have been caught before it was aired since breathing in as much dust and debris as this young man was doing can screw-up your throat and your lungs - even with a two filter 3M mask I still have a damaged esophagus because that did not filter out the isocyanates produced from the catalyst which is needed to harden the paint, which only a supplied air system can effectively do.

I don’t know how much one of those beautiful boards run, but i have 2 cnc routers that I built myself for under 2-3k each. Just food for thought. Again, BEAUTIFUL board
I built a hollow wood SUP using a jigsaw, a cheap table sander, an electric drill, an orbital sander, a cheap block plane and a borrowed router. The materials almost cost more than the tools, in this case. Paulownia isn't cheap (in most places.) Epoxy is ~$100 a gallon. All of the little pieces of hardware add up: the finboxes, leash cups, vent, etc. If you use fiberglass it's pricey too.

great work, good video. one question: basically, You took 4“ slices of lumber to cut out hollow profiles with a wall thickness of 6 to 8 mm. or in other words: You littered out 85 to 90 percent of the material. Hi Chris and thankyou for the compliment. You don't need any re-enforcement as there is enough strength in the timber. I have a board that's almost 6 years old and still no dents etc. Very durable

Cdric MrWa I do 2 to 3 coats of epoxy, I use surfset flex from sanded Australia www.sandedaustralia.com.au it's a all in one epoxy. one coat a day to allow it to cure. it will be shiny but have imperfections so I sand up to 2000 grit then car polish cut compound and polish
I hope your not burning brain cells not wearing a respirator. After time you don't notice the fumes cause you get used to it but your brain doesn't. Overhead air extraction isn't good enough . Nice board though.
Beautiful! But why not make it perfect by color sanding it flat and then polishing it back to a gloss again? It’s too beautiful to leave the little craters and imperfections in the surface of the epoxy when you can make it perfect with a little more work.

tscrodrigo thanks... No computer aided software in my boards, all boards are made to customers request and I have a few templates which allows me to do anything. You should give this method a go

One question though before I get started in my friends workshop, do you put marks on the rocker strips after shaping so you get them back together in the right spot when glueing, or is does that just give itself from the shape? Also, where I put the leash plug and fin boxes, do you leave a little extra wood? thanks so much again for posting this! david
Hey Hayden yes I leave timber around where the plugs go. As for rocker when I mark out the template it's always from the tail so I can line it up also sanding down to the line drawn ensures the rocker is right

Guillermo Díaz it's called surfset flex epoxy resin from sanded Australia, it's great and normally only 2 coats. I don't fibreglass as there is not need the board is strong enough without it

This was made for a 50 year old that wanted something that would paddle easy and get him into waves early. He is stoked with it, very fast down the line and great on rail. It's roughly 6kg

Leonardo Faria haha no family secrets I just use any wood glue laying around for the temporary glue up and tightbond 3 for the final glue up. The fin, leash and vent are all glued in with epoxy resin
Hello Morgan. I would like to use Douglas fire, density is around 550Kg/m3. If your surf is weight 5.5kg my futher one will be around 10Kg. Do you think can be work? Thanks a lot for your videa it's really nice! good job!
Hey Ugo Gerard yes it will work but it is on the heavier side. I'd suggest you make a fish or mini mal as the board will have a lot of speed and flow and probably hard to do tight manoeuvres
Hey, Nice work man! I have a question. I see loads of boards being done quite thick (apprix 2.5') with a chamber system. Would a less thicker version (approx 1.3') without chamber work? Not that I don't want to do it, But i'm quite limited in equipment and the chamber will be quite difficult for me to do. Dude Deluxe there is no difference in floatation even though the wooden surfboard is roughly 1kg heavier. You will actually find yourself getting into waves a bit earlier
Just curious, how forgiving are SUP boards if you don't shape them perfectly? I know shaping boards is an art, but is a board useless if you don't shape it correctly?
Eric Tedrow I think you would have to do a terrible job to make a board useless although the better the board is shaped combined with the right rocker and outline the better the result will be

Cdric MrWa definitely necessary if you wanted to go on an overseas trip, also if you seen how much air is released when the board is sitting in the sun you would be glad it's there

I love this build! I just finished a hollow wood SUP using panels and a fishbone frame. This seems like a less tricky method... Do you sell pdf templates? I'd be interested in a SUP build using the same method. Thoughts on that?
tiananman hi, I don't have any pdf templates. Making a sup would work though, it would be heavy while shaping before the chambering process. I think my mals are about 25kg before chambering gets them down to 9-10kg. Good luck
tiananman I don't sorry but best way is to copy an outline if you can get your hands on a sup and for a rocker look online for specs and draw your own. The rest is down to your shaping (check out my time-lapse video)

Smile SurferStyle no pressure dings at all, paulownia doesn't let go of the resin if cracked and the board tends to darken over the years of riding it due to uv

@@optimusprimal8398 it just depends on how far away the mill is but it can be expensive. I can get mine at whatever lengths I need but you may need to buy in 300mm increments so draw the out line and measure what you actually need as you can probably get a couple of 1500 and 1800 long boards
It's epoxy resin but no fibreglass reinforcement and as for logos I'm easy if the customer doesn't want them I'm happy to leave them off as many go on display when not surfed

That is good but in the vid your face is right in the stuff. I work with the same saws and chemicals making fiberberglass rc planes. I have a huge fan and doors wide open like your but I’m still breathing hardner and dust and so are you without a respirator on. That dust mask you were wearing doesn’t do much. Your work is beautiful.

Andrew Aslesen it's not as shiny as just applying the resin and leaving it but it's still reasonably shiny. After sanding with 2000 I polish with heavy cut compound then polish with cream and polish

Is this method superior to the hollow wood laminated boards? I'm looking into making a surfboard for a future project, but i'm still researching what technique to use.
ThurstanTV it's superior in terms of being able to shape as you are not locked in to a design made on a computer. I chose this method as the whole process is hand made and 100% shaped by me
ThurstanTV the wood waste is the trade off vs the time doing a laminate board over a skeleton frame. The skeleton frame is also easier for those who aren’t great at shaping a board as the finished shape is pretty much determined when doing the cad drawing to build the skeleton.

Bill Welter yes paulownia is cheaper and more readily available for me and results in a more durable board. Worth the effort

In short no there isn't using this method but the tree only takes 8 years to grow to the size where its milled. I do have uses for most off cuts

Hey Ugo Gerard yes it will work but it is on the heavier side. I'd suggest you make a fish or mini mal as the board will have a lot of speed and flow and probably hard to do tight manoeuvres

David Barrel it's paulownia and yes definitely dried timber as in all construction if you use green timber you will get shrinkage and movement

I have a question. I see loads of boards being done quite thick (apprix 2.5') with a chamber system.
Would a less thicker version (approx 1.3') without chamber work?
Not that I don't want to do it, But i'm quite limited in equipment and the chamber will be quite difficult for me to do.
So wanted to skip it and go for a finer version, but don't know if it will work.

It wouldn't work the board would be to heavy. You need the thickness and chambering for buoyancy

Hey you can finish it with whatever you want and comfortable in getting a great finish. I use epoxy as it's hard wearing and long lasting

Dude Deluxe there is no difference in floatation even though the wooden surfboard is roughly 1kg heavier. You will actually find yourself getting into waves a bit earlier
Just curious, how forgiving are SUP boards if you don't shape them perfectly? I know shaping boards is an art, but is a board useless if you don't shape it correctly?
Eric Tedrow I think you would have to do a terrible job to make a board useless although the better the board is shaped combined with the right rocker and outline the better the result will be

Cdric MrWa definitely necessary if you wanted to go on an overseas trip, also if you seen how much air is released when the board is sitting in the sun you would be glad it's there

thomas lesueur generally no epoxy gets in the holes but it can be easily removed once it's hardened

I love this build! I just finished a hollow wood SUP using panels and a fishbone frame. This seems like a less tricky method... Do you sell pdf templates? I'd be interested in a SUP build using the same method. Thoughts on that?
tiananman hi, I don't have any pdf templates. Making a sup would work though, it would be heavy while shaping before the chambering process. I think my mals are about 25kg before chambering gets them down to 9-10kg.

tiananman I don't sorry but best way is to copy an outline if you can get your hands on a sup and for a rocker look online for specs and draw your own. The rest is down to your shaping (check out my time-lapse video)

I only use paulownia and for that no it's just for looks

Smile SurferStyle no pressure dings at all, paulownia doesn't let go of the resin if cracked and the board tends to darken over the years of riding it due to uv

koxka 79 thanks... The rough sawn timber is 200x50mm this allows me to get 2 strips and reduce waste. For mals I use 100x50mm as there is less rocker

@@optimusprimal8398 yes 100x 50 would be fine as rocker is fairly flat in a mini mal. You'd need 12 pieces of timber to get 24" wide

@@optimusprimal8398 it just depends on how far away the mill is but it can be expensive. I can get mine at whatever lengths I need but you may need to buy in 300mm increments so draw the out line and measure what you actually need as you can probably get a couple of 1500 and 1800 long boards

Jesus christ, what did you use to varnish the board? Also you shoulda carved the logo in, that wood deserved a better logo application.
It's epoxy resin but no fibreglass reinforcement and as for logos I'm easy if the customer doesn't want them I'm happy to leave them off as many go on display when not surfed

Mactel Services they are rosewood stringers, they are for visual appearance only
where/when do you take the screws out (you screw them in around 2 min into the video)
Chris Chung the screws are only there to temporarily hold the board together so when I break the board apart after shaping the screws come out

That is good but in the vid your face is right in the stuff. I work with the same saws and chemicals making fiberberglass rc planes. I have a huge fan and doors wide open like your but I’m still breathing hardner and dust and so are you without a respirator on. That dust mask you were wearing doesn’t do much. Your work is beautiful.

Andrew Aslesen it's not as shiny as just applying the resin and leaving it but it's still reasonably shiny. After sanding with 2000 I polish with heavy cut compound then polish with cream and polish

Is this method superior to the hollow wood laminated boards?
I'm looking into making a surfboard for a future project, but i'm still researching what technique to use.
ThurstanTV it's superior in terms of being able to shape as you are not locked in to a design made on a computer. I chose this method as the whole process is hand made and 100% shaped by me
ThurstanTV the wood waste is the trade off vs the time doing a laminate board over a skeleton frame. The skeleton frame is also easier for those who aren’t great at shaping a board as the finished shape is pretty much determined when doing the cad drawing to build the skeleton.
