Made my morning. My friend John, jazz musician in Nashville, told me when he was like 15, he was so proud, this was probanly like early 70s, maybe before, , that he had learned to play Jerry Reed style and he would show up at guutar stores around Nashville and play The Claw or something. A friend of Jerry told Jerry about him. A store owner got his number for Jerry. Jerry called his house and invited him to his office. He went down, Jerry Reed handed him his guitar and said play something. He did. Jerry said you're playing it wrong. He taught him how to play it correctly along with 4 or 5 more of his licks. Told him to keep it up.
Jerry Reed was great. He was one of those guys that pretty much played himself in movies, and he was good at it. lol As a guitarist, if he isnt on the list of greatest players ever, the list is incomplete.

I knew Chip for years, he was such a gentle man. When I saw this come up on RUclips it brought tears to my eyes because I miss this man. The stories he shared with me over the years is something I hold dear.. Miss you Chipper

I played the California Mid State Fair, with guitarist, Brian Lonbeck, back in 86 and we shared the stage with Jerry. We ended up sitting together with Jerry at a coffee shop the next morning. Jerry was one of the funniest guys I ever met and as nice as could be...Almost forgot to mention, Merle Haggard was there as well. Brian had been a student of both Merle Travis and Joe Maphis.
I've said it many times and I'll go to the grave preaching it : Jerry Reed Hubbard was the single greatest entertainer that ever lived. The man's resume can not be beat. And to this day, the finest fingerpicker that's ever picked up a guitar. Much like losing SRV, I comfort myself that he was here and shared his life's work with us all. There are only a few true guitar gods, Reed is the Zeus of that list.
Amen my friend, I miss Jerry Reed every day. I practice Jerry Reed tunes to keep my chops sharp. One of the greatest guitar innovators of all time. Peace

I just watched the Garth Brooks 2 part series on Netflix for the second time. It inspired me so much. I don't know if I've ever been so touched by any one person. If you talk to him please let him know that its really inspiring people like me to be a better person and like you mentioned on what Jerry was saying to you. But with that said. As usual, another gem. Joe you're the man! Now I know where all the Atlanta pickers went to...Nashville.(in all honesty when I lived in Atlanta, I found very few guitarists, who were accomplished. I was young hoping to steal a few licks! Seems there are plenty down there now.) I was raised in OKC there were great guitarists there, I was good at rhythm but barely passable at lead.(Still like that after 50+ yrs. ) I was just an okay player, but in Atlanta in mid 80s people oohed & aahhed.(not me). Did meet a great bassist from Rome, he'd played since a kid in his Daddy's Gospel group, Greg Carter, & some killer drummers as well. Alas many moons ago....thanks again Joe, your vids are quite an inspiration, as well as teaching me something. Keep on, keeping on.
I may be wrong (probably are) but the picking technique sounds similar to "Fine on my mind" tune. I´d love that he recorded that song, it sounded pretty good, thanks a lot to Chip Young for showing us the song with is amazing picking and sharing the wonderful story.

This was Fabulous! (I have a question) ? Years ago when Jerry & Chet would come through Knoxville & play at the Dean Hill Country Club Jerry would always play a great song called “Cadillac and a Hershey Bar” Does anyone know if Jerry ever recorded this song? Or if he taught it to anyone? I’d love to know. I used to make Jerry & Chet-DJANGO tapes back in the day. Back then I’d ran across the best quality show ever of Django recorded in Belgium. Chet called me from his Dr Jim Coleman’s office to thank me. Wow did that ever Make my day! Over the phone I played a song I wrote inspired by after spending a day w Chet called Vivian (named after my mom) & Coleman figured it out over the phone & played it back to me. Lol Chet told me that he turned my old buddy Phil Keaggy onto something called the JAM MAN. Some delay box. He also thanked me for an old picture I had blown up from when he was on the old WNOX show dressed like a girl. Lol Chet was mine and everybody’s Hero! What a man! Chet said he would’ve loved to tackle that Django Belgium show if his other fingers were working better. I reminded him that Django could only properly use his first two fingers. He laughed & said “Well you’ve got a point there” his voice by then was really quiet & a little slurry & when we hung up I was afraid it would be the last time we talked & I got teary. I was right. I was buying a tweed amp some yrs later from Keith at Gruhn’s & asked about Chet’s Dr Coleman & he told me that he’d fell down some stairs & broke his neck & died. I was in shock. Last time I saw Jerry was in Pigeon Forge,Tn. I traded him that Belgium show for a autographed pic of him. He told all the bandmates “Son we gonna be listening to Django all the way back to Nashville so get ready!” My buddy Doc Livingston once brought Jerry to my show some yrs before that and I saw Doc sneak in & sit on the back row. I had no idea Jerry was beside him so everytime the light would hit my tele I’d shine the light in Doc & his buddys eyes. His buddy would take his hat off & wave it at me. Later when I found out it was Jerry I was so embarrassed. Kinda glad I didn’t know it was him then cause ida been a nervous wreck! I idolized him! I have a mini cassette tape somewhere of Chet talking about my guitar teacher & his old band mate buddy Atchey Burns-Jethro’s brother. I called him Pappy. Chet speaking of The String Dusters & The Colorado Mnt boys. Man where have the years gone? Well I love this program! Keep up the great work! ❤️ God bless

Okay, it was the Muscle Shoals crew, in '69 I guess. If you play those licks often enough, I guess you could put them in whichever order you wanted, when you wanted.

That tune he played around 7 minutes bears a resemblance to Zeppelin’s Black Water Side which in turn was ripped off from Bert Janch which he ripped off from old folk tunes.

That tune he played around 7 minutes bears a resemblance to Zeppelin’s Black Water Side which in turn was ripped off from Bert Janch which he ripped off from old folk tunes.
