- This interview is with one of my best friends and one of Nashville's most iconic session musicians and record producers, Jerry Kennedy.
Jerry Produced all those great records on Roger Miller as well as one of the greatest groups to come out of Nashville, The Statler Brothers. He also produced Reba McEntire.
He was also one of the guitarists on Pretty Woman by Roy Orbison.
Today's clip was first shot in December, 2004. It was shot at Shelby Singleton Studios. We added another clip to it from 2014.

There will never be another Statler Brothers. Top-Notch class act.
Yes they were a class act... best, Joe
Joe,I love all your interview's with Nashville's greatest Musician's, but dearly love this Jerry Kennedy 2 Part interview.I recorded for Shelby Singleton from 1969 through 1972 and Jerry Kennedy played guitar on all my Plantation Records,Jerry also Played the Sitar you mentioned on a couple of my recording's.I came to Nashville after recording for Sam Phillips' Sun/Phillips International Records in Memphis,Tn.,Phillips told Shelby that he should sign me, So he did.I've always loved Jerry Kennedy "The Man & The Guitar",he's one of the greatest People & Guitar player's to ever record in Nashville.I was blessed to have recorded with this great Man & Guitar Player Jerry Kennedy.Sincerely,Little David Wilkins
Hi David... thank you for sharing this... how interesting and cool is it that you had such a career... all the best, Joe
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum Thank you Sir,I love all your great interviews Joe.Keep the great historic interview's going. You've got my attention,I love your great Work. You are Awesome.Joe.LDW
Jerry Kennedy is one class act. Humble about his immeasurable contributions to the music industry. Whilst being very proud of his sons own success in the music biz. A son who now follows the trail his father (along with Jerry's contemporaries) helped pave. Great interview Joe. Thanks for sharing, RNB
Thanks for watching Rick......Best.....Joe
The memories are remarkable.
I can’t remember what I had for lunch last week and these legends can reach back 50 years or more.
There’s no other channel with the quality guests, questions, audio quality, etc.
Thank you very much Larry... that’s very kind...Joe
Yes it’s just so incredibly interesting to live your so called job.
Thanks Joe, again. I'm almost 71 and just found out who played the Dobro on Harper Valley!
Thanks again for watching Shazam.... Joe
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum I don't want to miss a single episode! I still have hopes of a trip to Nashville for the CAAS and to spend some time at the MHOF!
Hi again Shazam.... I hope you get to visit us at the MHOF&M too. I think you’ll like it.... I appreciate your supporting our videos very much....best, Joe
Great interview with one of my all-time favourite musicians. For some reason that I can't explain, his dobro playing on Tom T. Hall's "That's How I Got To Memphis" never fails to amaze and inspire me. It's just so perfect. Also on "Harper Valley PTA". Whatever it is--- his ear, his feel for the song, his consummate musicianship on so many great recordings------ Jerry Kennedy is just one of those legendary players who is a true "musician's musician", the kind everybody else looks up to.
Thanks Joe... I am sure he will love knowing you feel that way! Best, Joe
Fantastic Joe. I hope to see the day when you and your museum will be seen as a national treasure. From Ireland 🇮🇪
Thanks Robert…. Joe
The back stories to the great music that we hear are often more interesting than the songs themselves, which is saying a lot because the songs are usually pretty terrific. I think I've mentioned before but your knowledge of the people you interview is what makes these pieces so great.
Thanks again Robert... sincerely, Joe
Another one down (watched), and many more to go. Love Peggy Scott & Jo Jo Benson - "Lover's Holiday." Didn't know Jerry played on it. Thanks again, Joe. Enjoying these all so much. Glad you had the presence of mind to capture these interviews when you did since so many are now gone.
Thanks again Clapolla…..Joe
Legend! This interview is priceless.
Joe, what a treat, Jerry Kennedy is an awesome Interview! He is quick to give credit to others, and probably has a lot friends because of that! If there’s more of him interviewed, I certainly look forward to seeing it! As always, thanks for all you do!💫
Thanks Larry... yes I may put a part two up... Jerry is one of my favorites...Joe
If Jerry had never done anything else he should be in the hall of fame for producing those great Tom T. Hall and Statler's albums.
That is an amazing body of work.
Damn it Joe, they're gonna have to put your camera in the Musician's Hall of Fame, dude. If it wasn't for you, what would we have?
I’m glad you like these Johnny. I’ve actually burnt through a few cameras over the years already but I appreciate what you’re saying very much:).... Best, Joe
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum Being from the UK and never hearing much about all these great musicians I listened to on records, the information in your interviews fills in lots of gaps and its just great to listen to these legends talking. Jerry Kennedy as on nearly every country album I bought over here in the UK during the 60s 70s.
@@WildPhotoShooter I feel the same way. So much great info....
Johnny - seconded from the UK ;) THANKS JOE !!!!! Peace All, - Gus Riley

Many thanks John...truly appreciated... Joe
A very fascinating man who seems very down to earth and humble. I can't imagine the amount of talent that man has was good enough to play for. Thank you for another very interesting look into a side of the music industry that a normal fan never gets. I would love to see the museum you work for.
Hi James.... thanks for watching... I’d really like to see you here at the museum if you get the chance to visit Nashville.... best, Joe

@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum You’re Welcome Joe. I’m not being generous, I’m being honest. Peace and Love to you and all of the Musicians Hall of Fame Supporters.
I love the conversation you had with Charlie McCoy. Finally I found out who had the "tuning the guitar" intro on Bobby Bare's great 1963 hit Detroit City. It was Charlie. Thanks, that solved a sixty year old mystery!
Oh man! This is absolutely a double platinum interview Joe. But then I can’t remember one of them I’ve watched isn’t. Unbelievable how you think the last one can’t be topped, but I get fooled every time. Another phenomenal piece of content. Thank you so much again
Cheers Joe...Patrick 🍻
Something special it really was, it was soon on every juke box around the world and back then there was many of them, wonder what date that PW session was
Once again, I learn tons of about music when I watch these video's. Thanks Joe!
Thanks again for watching Jimmy....Joe
Jerry Kennedy was a humble genius!
Joe is such a great interviewer, I always enjoy these videos!
Thanks Hopper... I appreciate you watching them too... best, Joe
I met his son, Gordon Kennedy, years and years ago when he was in the christian rock band 'Whiteheart',.....great guy to talk to.
Much respect for this man! Great man
Terrific interview Joe! It's nice to be able to put a face to all of those amazing tunes that he was involved in. It's quite obvious that Jerry was an amazing musician in his own right & was instrumental in producing so many hits over all of those years. Thanks so much & I hope that you are doing well & staying safe!
Thanks as always Steve... best, Joe
Love this history of early Nashville sessions with the very best! Keep 'em comin'.
Thanks Jerry... best, Joe
Joe, you never fail to entertain with these great interviews. I always learn something new. You've had the privilege to meet so many Nashville legends, that you should write a book. I'd buy it.

Great interview Joe 👍🏻😎
Thank you David.... sincerely......Joe
I grew up in the music revolution, starting in 1956 with Elvis, to 1964, and the Beatles, and Merle Haggard, Glen Campbell , Jimmy Webb, Take Me by George Jones. Ring of Fire by JRC. That high note by Tammy on Stand By Your Man, 1969, shook us up.
Great guy. This is good stuff, as always ,for any music researcher or anyone else. The older I get, the older I like my music.
Thanks for watching Terry...Joe
May you rest in peace Joe. 🙏 From Ireland 🇮🇪
I didn’t know it but this guy help form my love of this kind of music. Just a humble guy and a prince of a human.

Thanks so much for this Joe. Greatness. Would love to know more about Jurry Kennedy and Lester Roadhog Moran.
Thanks for watching Terry... I might put a second clip out with Jerry....Best, Joe
Once again, a very interesting and insightful interview, with a great player and a nice humble guy. It’s really interesting how the record business was handled then Vs Now that you can copy a mix onto your phone and send it anywhere in the world immediately. But the real story is still the song and people who who made it sound so great.
Skip... thanks for watching... I appreciate your supporting our videos. You are also very right about the song and musicians importance in the end result both now and then........Best, Joe
Joe as a 2nd generation born Américan raised in the great San Joaquin Valley here in California I grew up listening to all kinds of music. The Bakersfield Sound here down the road from me etc. and of course all the greats: Ernest Tubb, Jim Reeves, Hank Sr, Roger Miller, Tammy, Patsy you name them! It's so amazing all the great producers, musicians you have interviewed and the historical knowledge I've attained by just listening to your interviews!! Thank you so much!!
Jose’..... I’m very glad you’re enjoying them. I did your support too.... Best, Joe
Great interview. How could a promo man hear "Harper Valley PTA" and not think it's a hit?!
It happened/happens a lot Tom.... best, Joe

Harper Valley and Good Luck Charm. Wow!
Thanks for watching nik...Joe
A masters class in music!! Truly entertaining...just great.
Can we have a moment of appreciation for the less is more production style?
Thank you 👍 ❤
Thanks 111.... Joe
Jerry got the best out of Jerry Lee Lewis as a country artist. The two Country Hall of Fame Hits albums were some of the sharpest performances of Jerry Lee's career.
Thanks Floyd... best, Joe
I own both.
Just like he did for Roger Miller, Kennedy kept the production out of Tom T Hall’s way. Now we know another story behind The Storyteller!
Thanks Dr.......Joe
Great video and amazing facts (especially about "Pretty Woman"). Thanks Joe
Thank you too G G..... Joe
Great interview.
Ed, my dad, Joe, passed September 28th- but I know he would appreciated your kind comment and support for the channel. Hope you can visit the museum sometime.
Best,
Britt
Very good conversation, Joe. The list of his artists goes on and on. Almost everything he produced was the highest quality. Joe Dowell and Diane Ray got big records because of him. "Don't Go Near The Indians" by Rex Allen went 2:59, an eternity for a Jerry Kennedy production. I still have that record.
Thanks for watching Jim... best, Joe
What a memory this guy has.
Thanks for watching Bill…. joe
More great history!! Thanks Joe!
Thanks again Mike......Joe
Jerry Kennedy produced some of Charlie Rich's finest recordings while he was at Smash. In his 1971 book "Feel Like Going Home" Peter Guralnick has a chapter on Charlie and he mentions that Charlie's time at Smash was one of his happiest times in the music business- this being before his immense success with Billy Sherrill and goes on to state that Charlie and Margaret Ann Rich regard Jerry Kennedy..... as a "ray of sunshine in a den of iniquity." One of my friends was guitar player for Johnny Hallyday and he often remarks that he wished he had been with Johnny when he had the Jerry Kennedy Orchestra work with him on a series of his recordings, which I believe were under aegis of Shelby Singleton. I know Hallyday returned to Nashville in the 70s to do more recording- presumably, with Jerry.
Thanks for watching and sharing your comments Nick........Joe
Following your videos is the greatest, Joe. For guys like me who love this music and those wonderful virtuoso musicians who made all those great records, it's a real education. I grew up with this music and I love it even more now than I did when I was young. Thanks to RUclips I can also hear records like Jerry Kennedy's "Teenage Love Is Misery" which I had not heard before. The guitar sound is fantastic. According to Wikipedia, Jerry signed a record contract with RCA when he was 11 years old!!! And made several records "with contributions by Chet Atkins". Wow, how amazing is that and where can I hear those? Thanks again for what you do, sure hope to visit the museum some day.
Thanks Joe.... I hope to see you at the museum too.........Joe
Great content!
Wow this is great thanks for sharing
Thank you for watching M B....Joe
Bless him. Jerry, Ray Stevens, Bob Morrow , Gerry Reed were the musicians on my Mums Nashville recordings back at Columbia Studio 1963. Just after Gerry Reed went to RCA for Chet. He played so great... like a steel guitar , Ray was so fantastic. Ray could play his own to the Floyd Cramer style . They were the best of best and Jerry Kennedy is such a pleasant smart man. 🇨🇦😊🇨🇦
Thanks Dave.... best, Joe
I loved this.
Thanks for watching Don... Joe
What an amazing career and a super great guy!
Thanks Garth...Joe
Great interviews.
Thanks vtm…. Great people like Mr.Kennedy make for great interviews… best, Joe
Bob Moore was there on that “Pretty Woman” session date. He did not play bass but Billy Dees said he remembers Bob standing in front of Roy counting him in because the vocal comes in on an unexpected beat. In Bob’s work book it notes “Jerry Kennedy.” Later in the day, Bob took his private plane out to look for Jim Reeves plane crash as it had yet to be found. Jim’s plane had gone down the night before. :-(
Outstanding !!! I was hoping Joe that you could have talk Mr. Kennedy into doing a few bars of 1958 smash hit Teenage Love Is Misery.... Thanks Joe..
Hi Blue... thanks again for watching... maybe next time Jerry will honor your request:) Best, Joe
Joe this just turned me on to Peggy Scott & Jo Jo Benson...Bad Arse and Jerry has a Funk and Soul in him like no other!
Mean Electric Sitar!!!!!!!!!

Great history. "Stereo was a cool thing."
Thanks for watching Buzz...Joe
Hi Joe, Is this the same Jerry Kennedy that made an album with Tommy Tomlinson called Guitar greatest hits?
Larry......... Yes... It’s the same Jerry Kennedy. Jerry also hired the same studio musicians mentioned in this interview on Tommy’s recordings here in Nashville..... best, Joe
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum Thanks
Interesting to see this. I bought that album when it 1st came out and still have it. I was wondering if someone would mention it.
@@beatle9239 I have that album too
I always wondered why there were so many guitarists credited on these sessions. Always figured they were utility guys who played Claves or tambourine or something but wrote “guitar” on the session time card. Interesting to know it was for the “Stereo” mix.
The musicians on the Peggy Scott & Jo Jo Benson records were amazing. Now I know Jerry played guitar/dobro, but who was the drummer, etc. ????
HELLO FROM HOLLYWOOD JOE
Joe, you mentioned being from Columbus, GA. When and what caused you to go to Nashville?
Hi Ben.... long story short.... I knew Conway Twitty. 1974 he moved here from Oklahoma. He was friends with Dick Clark. I had a rock band. Conway sent our demo tapes to Dick. So Conway was our connection to possibly getting a rock record deal through Dick Clark. This was before the internet and personal connections were almost the only way to get anywhere. I tell the whole story on a couple of interviews you can see on RUclips... thanks again for watching....Best, Joe
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum I'll check the videos. Did you arrive in Nashville too late to have known Clyde Beavers? He was another Georgia boy from Tennga, GA.
Ben... I don’t recall knowing Clyde. Best, Joe
I wonder if Jerry ever heard Cleveland, Ohio's The Raspberries 1974 song "Play On" from their final album "Starting Over." They bookend that song with the guitar riff from "Oh, Pretty Woman." Years later Dwight Yoakam would do the same thing on his hit "Fast As You." BTW, does producer Billy Sherrill at 17:59 look a lot like singer Mickey Gilley?
thanks Joe. Did you ever get to meet the late Buddy Harmon or Hank Garland?
Hi Ginny…. Yes I knew Buddy but never met Hank…. Joe
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum Lucky you .one of my fav drummers
I wonder which note(s) in the signature guitars(s) lick that was changed prior to the recording?
I messed around a bit with the one everyone knows and couldn't figure out what the original might have been and how it might have been modified.
Not a big deal...just curious!
Buzz... I think it was at the end of the riff Wayne Moss changed or added a note to allow it to repeat. I’m not sure. Best, Joe
Ray Charles called Quincy Q as well.
Acetate was used a lot . People had it in their house to record anything.John and Allen Lomax used it for library of congress recordings. One of the only acetate plants in the world burned down last year in california..I dont know how i got unsubbed from this channel but just fixed tha...Respect to this channel always

Jerry playing that Electric Sitar:
ruclips.net/video/SLcnyauzuCc/видео.html
Hi 44……. Yeah Jerry played the electric sitar very much like Reggie Young. Peggy and Jo Jo were happening when I was in Jr.High and High School in Columbus Ga. which is their home town too. I use to see their names outside the little R&B circuit clubs around town.Even underage I could drive by on Summer and Fall evenings and hear them playing with the front doors open.
