This is in accordance to my repair person of 30+years here in Chicago. I’m sure there are many different schools of thought on this, All I can say that for all of my cellos setting the after length at G natural makes my instrument ring like crazy. There’s no harm in experimenting around. On my three celli If switching tail pieces or after a bass bar replacement when putting the tailpiece back on I’ve had after lengths of F natural F sharp and G natural. After the instrument settles him from a big repair he will adjust the tailpiece to the G natural which is his preference so I have tried other measurements.
By the way, I have one of the best cellos by David Wiebe and my best instrument is a Goffriller copy made for him during his Toscanini years that was played by Frank Miller exclusively until his death.
One more thing since were experimenting. This is totally a Chicago thing started by my teacher Frank Miller. He switches the C and G string pegs. The C string is always the upper peg the G string the lower. I have done this on all of my cellos and it gives the C string much more power. I’ve heard several repair people in Chicago say they called it a “Chicago cello thing” , and any instrument thay work on and which is strung that way they know they had some kind of connection to Chicago at one point or another, LOL.
In my opinion, the owner of Rental Instrument, LLC, Kenneth Kou, lacks integrity and is extremely selfish. To this day, I an very disappointed with the instrument he sold me. I feel spending thousands of dollars to buy the instrument of your dreams, should be a joyous occasion. He made it a complete nightmare for me. Sad situation, sad man.
@@richard_4675 I was just disappointed in the instrument he sent me. Parts were broken, the description was wrong. I saved up ages for the instrument, and he refused to refund or exchange it. Then he did some pretty outrageous things following that. Hopefully, you have a better experience with him. Best of luck!
You should try and get some specs on your 1700 and Sheku-kanneh-Mason's 1700
The correct after length should be a G natural, not F sharp
What if F# sounds deeper and broader and especially balance out the cello and make the D string rings more? What is correct? According to who?
