Ah yes, Doom. The very first game I've ever played. Was lucky enough to play it on a DOS computer in the late 90's. I still come back to it to this days over 2 1/2 decades later, and it's just as good as the first time I picked up that keyboard, except it's an Xbox Series X controller I remap the buttons to on the same executable on DOSBox!
Best version of Doom at the time. There's been an updated version in the works by the homebrew community for some time, but who knows when this will finally be released?
The missing music is what makes this the best port of Doom. Hearing the creatures growl from a distance, not knowing where they are, made this scary as hell.
Back in the day, I was not aware that Doom was on the Jaguar. But I only played it a few times. It was on a friend’s console; maybe a Sega. As always, enjoyed the review.
Thanks Jolt. Yeah this port of Doom was a big deal I remember. But I only got to play the game at my friends house on his computer. I dont think I was able to play it again until much much later, around the year 2000 when I finally got a computer!
I bought Jaguar Doom back when it came out. I always enjoyed it. My best friend, also a Jaguar owner, also bought it. We played a few Co-op and Deathmatch games, but when linked the game was not very stable.
What I don't get is why we didn't get subsequent ports of Doom engine based games like Doom 2, Heretic, Hexen or Strife, given Carmack's personal investment in ensuring the Jag port of the engine was so optimized (that all other console ports used it as a basis). The bulk of the hard work was already done, in the case of Doom 2 & Heretic it would mostly just be a matter of porting assets. If not that, then at least a Rise of the Triad port, which is in the sweet spot of what Jag could comfortably run at a smooth framerate.
Check-out: Doom: Slayer Edition. Doom 2 Heretic All are being worked on/ported as we speak. Doom: S.E. adds all the levels, graphics, enemies, weapons, and in-game music that was missing from the o.g. Jaguar port. There are plenty of videos on RUclips, with Zero Page Homebrew posting an excellent video featuring all three games.
Nice review! Your question (Atari Jaguar Cd): maybe you should re-format your sd card , get latest firmware (your own) and add jcd. files back to you're sd card..
I'm actually doing that as we speak. I had updated to the latest firmware a few weeks back to try and fix it but somebody else said they had the same issue and gave me some steps. We'll see soon if it works
IMHO if you've already plucked down the bucks for a Jag, might as well spend the $50 for a loose cart. You'll know you've got the second best port after the PC.
Doom is my all time favorite game franchise. Doom 2016 is my favorite Doom game. I just bought all the Doom games. Doom 1-3, Doom 2016, Doom Eternal, and when Doom Dark Age comes out, I'll get that one. I'm 41 and I played Doom on computer when I was a kid. I still remember the god mode code IDDQD. Doom 2016 is amazing. I don't know if you play newer games.
I agree with your review. I wonder if there's a way to add music back to Doom, and make it a CD file? I haven't coded in 40 years so I don't even know if that's feasible or how difficult it would be. It would be cool for people with Game Drives and emulation. I'll have to check my game drive and see if my CD files are loading.
So I deleted all the CD games but it did the same thing. I ended up having to reformat the card and then it worked! So I got through the first cluster in Battle Morph today so hopefully that review will be this month!
Back in the day I used to play games with music off and the record or tape player going for music. So you say the controller works well for this; does it have an analog stick? I forget, but it seems like it’d be hard to control without one.
Just a dpad. But utilizing the strafe and either memorizing or using the overlay allows for quicker movement than you might think and the ability to swap guns on the fly
Thank you so much! It's always exciting to hear that people like what I'm doing and I'm glad that I can put out stuff that you want to see. Thanks for the kind words!
The missing elements is unforgivable IMHO. This was late 1994. This stuff was (probably) left out to save ROM space and it is only a 4MB ROM. Going to 6MB would not have required extra hardware, just a 48Mbit chip.
It's because the Motorola 68k processor used to handle game music was already in use calculating collision. There's a workaround, used in the new fan made edition which restores ingame music, it was just uneconomically time consuming to implement during the game's original development cycle. (Same reason 32X version had shit music and a tiny view window)
The reason the music was omitted is because it was released on a 4 MB cart, and was rushed to release. Check out Doom Slayer Edition, which adds everything that was missing from the original Jaguar port. Doom 2 and Heretic are also being ported to the Jaguar.
@@DaveMoorland-zv3tn : The music plays between the levels so it's there in the code. I'd assume they turned it off during gameplay to keep the framerate up.

I remember seeing a video on that version years ago. Wasn't that the one that was promised and hyped beyond belief by the publisher and they gave the developer a copy of PC doom and said figure it out. And the developer was one person if I remember correctly
Wouldn’t bother with anything less than perfection at this point. This was something we used to have to deal with now we have pc perfect ports on every system out. Why bother with these old console ports anymore? There’s a difference between classic games and those that are out dated.
I wanted a Jaguar so bad, though if my parents had been willing to shell out, I probably would have opted for either the Sega Nomad or the Sega CDX… I was well invested in the Genesis world at that point.

Well, best PORT at the time. The DOS version was still better and so was the Win95 version.
I'd say it's pretty close between PS1 and Jaguar. That PS1 port is pretty great.

Yeah none of us knew. Me and my buddies tried it on the SNES and one guy had a SegaCD but it was always inferior in some way.
I've never owned an Atari, but I love your channel
Thank you
Was the best home console version for years despite little music.

one of the three times we Atari Jaguar fans could wow the nintendoids!
What hasn't Doom been ported to these days? :)
I have tried the Atari 8-bit computer port someone did..... I should check if someone did a 7800 port.

To fix your GameDrive delete all the CD games off of you SD card. Then just copy them back over again. That fixed mine.
