Fun Fact. If you Go back and watch the moment when emit and the kids are stood on the train. You can see the youngest boy pointing to his "junk". Apparently he needed the toilet and was signalling to the crew that he needed to go. Another fun fact. If you watch (A million ways to die in the West) with Seth Mc farland you will see a brilliant very blatant reference to this movie. I won't spoil it.

Fun fact about ZZ Top being part of the movie: While they were shooting the scene where ZZ Top is playing, a camera broke so they had to stop shooting to fix it. While waiting, Michael J. Fox approached the band and asked them if they could play one of their songs and the band gladly accepted. Once they were done, someone else asked for another song. The band ended up playing for two hours for everyone on set. When the band asked the director if the camera was fixed, the director admitted it only took a few minutes to fix it but he didn't want to interrupt the impromptu party going on.

The metal plate scene ties into the first movie with Doc wearing a bulletproof vest knowing the terrorists are going to shoot him. But it also ties into the second movie when Marty visits Biff at the pleasure palace, he finds Biff watching "A fistful of Dollars" with Clint Eastwood where his character uses a metal plate as a made up bulletproof vest. Which is how Marty probably got the idea. He remembered the movie.

OK, here's the explanation behind Doc and Clara meeting:
In the ORIGINAL timeline, Doc wasn't there to volunteer to pick Clara up. Nobody else volunteers, so she rents a wagon and sets out to the schoolhouse on her own. A snake spooks the horses, causing Clara to lose control of the carriage and crash into the ravine, killing her. As a result, the ravine is renamed to Clayton Ravine (which is why Doc and Marty remember it this way).
In the 1885 with Doc, but without Marty, Doc meets Clara at the train station, as he had volunteered to earlier (when the mayor gave him the info).
When Marty comes to 1885, the timeline changes AGAIN. If you re-watch the scene with Marty and Doc talking to the train conductor and then setting the plan up to have the train push the DeLorean on the track leading to Shonash (Clayton) ravine, you can see Clara in the background (with her back turned to Doc and Marty) waiting for Doc to pick her up.
Since Doc doesn't pick her up when Marty is in 1885, she rents a wagon and sets out to the schoolhouse on her own (As she did in the original timeline). The snake spooks the horses, causing Clara to lose control of the carriage. But, this time, with Doc and Marty in 1885, Doc is able to save her.
Hope that all makes sense. There are so many little items in the entire trilogy that it really takes multiple viewings to catch a lot of them. I've seen the trilogy probably 50 times and I still see things that I had never picked up on before.

They're all great. For me, the third is the weakest without meaning that as a criticism. Because I really appreciate the complicated time travel elements and the third is a little bit time-travel light compared to the second. People probably tend to like it because it is grand adventure with a lighter tone (which is not a downside).
BTTF2 is super-complicated, and despite some flaws, I love it for that. Occurs in 2015, two 1985s, a modified 1955, and we find out Doc has gone to 1885.
Back to the Future is the best film of the three, given it is the setup, the character introduction and the plot and pacing are so tight, but the entire thing is just great.

I"m sure others have said it, but Zemeckis has full ownership of the series and refuses to let any sequels or remakes happen. And the fanbase has mostly sided with him. There was a Saturday morning cartoon that takes place after the third movie and focuses on Jules and Vern with very little Marty being a part. There was also a game by Tale Tell in the 2010s that was supervised under Zemeckis with some cameo voice work by Lloyd and Fox that is the closest anyone will get to a 4th movie.

As someone born in the 1980s (1980, to be exact), I really miss this era of filmmaking. Nothing like this is being made today. EVERYTHING is either a remake, reboot, reimagining, prequel, or sequel, and we never really get "endings" any longer. Endings are powerful, because they're also new beginnings that allow us to imagine where the characters will go next. And IMAGINING where they will go next is far more powerful than endlessly seeing them again on screen over and over again. Thank the film gods that Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale refuse to make another BTTF movie or allow another one to be made. Glad y'all enjoyed the trilogy!

I think the directing of this movie is better than so many movies today. For example the framing of the scene with Doc in the train and Clara coming up in the background on a horse. The framing is creative and specifically crafted. So many movies today are actors standing in front of a green screen, not interacting with their environment because the objects are tennis balls and not really there.

  • @bustedsim
    @bustedsim 3 года назад +79

Couple things most people miss about this film:
At the dance, if Marty wasn't there, Bufred would've shot Doc, which, as Bufred said the last time he used it, the guy took 2 days to die. So basically he shot Doc at the dance and Clara spent the next two days at Doc's deathbed.
As for the bulletproof vest, it was also foreshadowed in part II when Biff was watching a Clint Eastwood film in his hottub with his floozies and it was a shootout that was foiled by Clint, dressed as Marty was here, using a bulletproof vest. So a bulletproof vest is in every film of the trilogy, just like many of the motifs that get repeated throughout it.
The director and producer both have it in their contracts that for as long as they live, there will not be any Back to the Future IV's or reboots. Which is for the best really.
Another fun thing to note is how so much of the setting and plot revolves around the various stages of the Clocktower. We first saw it not working and in danger of being replaced, we saw it working, we saw multiple times (once in each movie!) it getting struck by lightening, we saw it's future as a mall, and an alternate history where Biff turned it into a casino/hotel and finally we saw it's creation and the clock when it was new.
In fact, if you look in the background of the scene where Marty and Doc were asking the Train engineer about the speed, you can see both the clock being unloaded from the train, and Clara looking a little lost as her ride didn't show up, poor thing.
Because of how meticulous these films are in their details and setups, I feel like there is infinite rewatchability to them.

    • @matthewcastleton2263

All we know, both of George McFly and the Bates family could be descended from Maggie McFly, whether that be through one of her other children or something else. If they are, they'd both possess some of her DNA, creating the possibility that one of her future descendants could look like her, even if they don't have the same last name. Remember, Lorraine says she is nearly 18 years old old in 1955, meaning she would have had to been born in 1937 or 1938 depending upon how close she was to turning 18 (she was nearly 18 years old on November 12th, 1955, so, she could totally mean she was turning 18 sometime in early 1956, allowing her to have been born in 1938 as well). That's more than 50 years after the events in 1885 occur. She totally could also be descended from Maggie McFly as well, making George and Lorraine distant cousins. They could even be closer cousins (like 3rd or 4th cousins) and they'd never know unless they did their genealogy to find out. Tons of people who come from different families later find out that they share ancestors who they would have never known about had the two people in question never met and fallen in love.

There was a cartoon in the 90's, "Back to the Future: The Animated Series" (1991-1993). Plot "Jump on board the DeLorean and travel through time with Doc Brown and Marty McFly, as Doc conducts experiments and raises a family". I don't remember much about it.

OK, now you have to watch Sergio Leone's Dollar-Trilogy. So many references to that in BttF III.
And regarding remakes or reboots, a quote from Wikipedia:
"Co-writer and director Robert Zemeckis, who has final rights to all films in the Back to the Future franchise, has stated that he will block all attempts to remake or reboot the original film."
I am pretty sure otherwise there would be 15 mediocre remakes and reboots and spin-offs by now.

    • @Necrowolf81

There is more to the story. There was a ride at Universal studios that used filmed footage with Doc (and i think Biff) which is a continuation just like the filmed Terminator footage for the Universal attraction that had Arnold, Linda, Edward and Patrick in it is a continuation of Terminator 2. There's the animates series that uses Doc's kids as the main characters and then there is the Tell Tale game that was overseen by the director (or writer or whatever). The tell tale game is basically part 4 just like the Ghostbusters game where you play a new rookie is part 3.

Some people where turn off by the western setting but I was always a fan of western. And I enjoyed the role reversal in that Marty was now trying to be responsible in not meddling with time. And doc now willing to meddle with time out of love. Part 2 i like but i feel it gets more praise than it actually deserves.

I liked 3 the least, as the Doc couldn't be much of a scientist if he couldn't work out an alternative to gasoline, or think of using gearing, gravity or some other method to either git the Delorean up to 88, or change that speed parameter. It's never stated WHY the car need to get to 88. In the first film we see the speedometer increase when the Doc is doing the burnout with Einstein in the car, which suggests is nothing to do with velocity.
I also wonder why they just didn't leave town and lay low to avoid Tannen to but themselves more time.
Too many obvious things they could have done.

I worked at Universal Studios in the late 80s for my "survival job" as a young actor! I was in Security and drove a car around the Lot most of the time. I used to spend a lot of time on weekends exploring the Backlot on foot because there was very little filming going on during weekends. The Courthouse Square area where the Clock Tower and the Malt Shop etc were, was one of the places where I loved to spend a lot of my down time and have lunch sometimes! It was so cool as a young actor to be able to hang out there and have such a Blast as my "Day Job"!! Most of the buildings like the Clock Tower and the Theatre were only about 3 or 4 feet deep past the entrances but the Malt shop and a few others actually had small interiors and that's what you see a lot of in BTTF 1 and 2. There was a large center structure that connected the buildings on that side that was the size of a large warehouse that was mostly used to store outdoor props. I still get a kick out of it that I got to spend so much time on one of the most key areas of BTTF when it was still the way it was in those iconic films!! I gotta say, working at Universal, having the keys to just about everything while driving a car on the lot during the 80s was like a teen's "dream come true" back then!! Thanks for the fun reviews.. You two are great together!!

Great review! Trivia: Doc’s faded bandana in 1885 was made from his 2015 shirt featuring two cowboys on horses chasing a train! At the end, Needles’ 2015 gang was comprised of other gang members (ie their descendants) Skinhead (1955-1985), Data (2015) and the 1st Cowboy (1885). Marty saw the Clint Eastwood film & metal plate gag on 1985A Biff’s TV when they were in the hot tub! So clever!

Trivia Fact: Michael J. Fox was almost hung at the hanging scene. They shot it and the rope wasn't prepared correctly. When he passed out they thought he was acting, but realized thankfully their mistake really quickly. Rumor has it that this could have be a factor for his parkinsons later in life, but that was never confirmed.

The tracks wouldn't have shifted that much in just 100 years. Many of the railroads still used today in the US were built in the 1800s. Railroads are engineered with the weight of trains in mind, so it's not like the rails would've sank over a century from use. If that were the case, rail lines would need maintenance more regularly than roads, because modern freight trains can weigh in excess of 10,000 tons.
