For me this defines the spiral of hatred, fear and pain that the Emperor had plunged them into, resulting in a bitter fight between father and son, which was the downfall of both of them.
The thing about 1:13 is that it reminds you of EVERYTHING before this. The old republic, the prequels, the clone wars, and literally everything else before the OT. 1:13 is a beautiful piece, and to me shadows Luke's burst of hate and use of the darkside to defeat Vader. It also shadows that anyone can fall to the darkside, (though once he realizes it Luke turns away).
Not hate... fear. He used his fear and desperation to save his sister at all costs, even if it damned him. Then once he realized what he was doing, that he had fallen to the darkside and was about to kill the man he came to save... he stopped and turned his back on it... instead trusting his fate to a father he knew deep down still had good in him... a father he knew was ruled & controlled by his emotions... and that those same emotions that had driven him to the dark side were the key to his redemption and path back to the light. So KNOWING that the Emperor would kill him for it, he threw his light sabre away and rejected the darkside... gambling that the one last bit of good left in Vader would compel him to stop his master from killing his son... gambling because in that moment he knew if THAT didn't work, NOTHING would. If it didn't work, it meant that Luke was wrong about his father, and the battle was lost before it began.
In my honest opinion, Luke should've said "I'll never _fall_ to the Dark Side." He did briefly _turn_ to the Dark Side...but you could say he was justified in doing so. This is still a very powerful moment. I have no wish to undermine it.
TheRevan1231 Only problem is, this isn't part of the Expanded Universe. Though, to be fair, "Legends" still counts to a degree. ^ Only the EU material that occurs _after_ the Movies is really being ignored, in favor of Episode VII.
Most underrated piece of Star Wars music. the 20 seconds or so at 1:13 . I've watched star wars a million times and I know every scene of every soundtrack by heart, yet this one it seems as if I've forgotten it. and nobody should, because it's one of the most powerful pieces of classical music I have ever heard.
charon7111 I feel like vadar didn't want to defeat his son. I feel like he wanted luke to win to save himself and his sister. Vadar wanted to sacrifice himself for kids. So sad.
God that part in particular at about 1:13 reminds me when i was 8 or so watching this movie on my grandma's vhs alone while she was at work. I rewinded it about 100 times because it was so powerful and spoke so much to me and really transported me away from that trailer park where i lived. Starwars had a definite effect on me. It doesn't really manifest itself much anymore, but it stays embedded in your being.
As a kid this was my single favorite moment/scene in all of star wars. Might still be (even if i like Empires duel in total more). As a kid i had lukes entire choreography memorized and would swing my little plastic target lightsaber around (or anything vaguely sword shaped) haha. Mustve ruined the tape on that vhs.
1:13 really does feel like the final tipping point for every event of the timeline before it. From the redemption of Revan all the way to Anakin's first real moments of doubt of the councols wisdom after Ashoka left. You can genuinely feel all the emotion and weight behind every lightsaber swing snd every musical note. Anakin's regrets, Lukes rage, both of their desperation and you just just FEEL the other Jedi long passed on watching in anticipation while the fate if the galaxy hangs on rhe balance of a Sons love for his father and his unwillingness to abandon him
when i hear this.. ( 1:13 ) i can feel star wars just stop ... i can really feel the end... it is so sad.. but in a way, it feels good, like the good guys finally win!
Yes I totally, 100% agree with you! But, I have to say, I allways considered the "scene" to end when Vaders hand get choped off, even though technically the scene ends when Palpatine gets thrown down the hole.
Billy Price Darth Vader: If you will not turn to the dark side, then perhaps she will. Luke Skywalker (Briefly turns into Darth Filius): NOOOOOO! *Cuts off Vader's hand* Darth Vader: ARRGH! Darth Sidious: Blah blah blah good good strike him down dewwit
*Looks at my hand then back at where Vader's used to be* Never *Throws my lightsaber away* You have failed your highness. I am a Jedi...like my father before me
Quoting the scene: Darth Vader: You cannot hide forever, Luke. Luke: I will not fight you. Darth Vader: Give yourself to the Dark Side. It is the only way you can save your friends. Yes, your thoughts betray you. Your feelings for them are strong. Especially for... sister. So, you have a twin sister. Your feelings have now betrayed her, too. Obi-Wan was wise to hide her from me. Now his failure is complete. If you will not turn to the Dark Side... then perhaps she will... Luke: [igniting light saber, screams] NEVER!
1:13 has this epic hauntingness to it. Very much a sound depicting what it means to let’s go and embrace the dark side. John Williams is a legend & genius.
Probably my favorite piece ever produced by John Williams... There's just so much emotion in this scene so much that led up to this. Return of The Jedi is my favorite installment. Not that I don't love A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back ... The original trilogy is just amazing so, it's a hard pick but, return of the Jedi just speaks to me the most. I wish they'd release the original theatrical edit of Star Wars on bluray. Honestly I don't hate the prequels as much as others... Still don't like Jar Jar and their quality is no where near as good as the original trilogy and their no where near perfect... But they aren't totally void of entertainment and good moments. I'm going to get backlash for not hating the prequels... But that's my opinion...
If you're still on this site, try searching for "Harmys Despecialized editions" it's not perfect and tedious to get but it's basically the first 3 movies restored to their original form as best they could in mostly Full HD wherever possible
My friend's favorite Star Wars film is actually Attack of the Clones, I was pleasantly surprised, the prequels get more shit than they deserve. But yeah I agree RotJ is the absolute best.
My favorite thing about Luke Skywalker is that he is an ordinary person. He's just a farmboy who inherited enough sensitivity from his father to gain rudimentary jedi training. He is not very powerful, very quick, or even very clever. But he has emotion, friends, ideals, a purpose. At the climax in this movie, Luke's frustration that his father will never cease to be anything but a cold, ruthless monster lashes out in pain and fury. The raw emotion of this ordinary man as he finally breaks his limit is a powerful climax.
While he starts of as not being as such, he does end up being “very powerful, very quick, or even very clever” (though whether he is the most of these traits varies on continuity, and that’s another story). Idk where this idea about him comes from. I only really agree with that when it comes to thing like his personality flaws. In all other regards he’s never portrayed as just a rudimentary Jedi or an “average Joe”. Otherwise the Emperor wouldn’t have taken a vested interest in him like he did his father before him. Kind of the reason why he advances faster than almost any other Jedi I can think of despite his “rudimentary training”, which was pretty much only “rudimentary” during ANH/Star Wars and Empire Strikes Back. ROTJ has his training being nigh-complete and he is still more than competent enough to fight and overwhelm Vader).
Luke is anything but "ordinary". Think about it. In course of about 5 years, Luke goes from a completely untrained farm boy to a Jedi Knight capable of defeating Darth Vader in battle, and with enough force of will to turn away from the dark side when he felt himself on the precipice of falling. And he really only had maybe a week of formal training, the rest was self-taught. Luke was every bit as remarkable as his father. Perhaps even more so.
@@hectorvalverde5044 When they duel on Bespin, Vader was intentionally holding back because he wanted to capture and convert him. Once they duel in RotJ, Vader was giving it his all. He knew it was a test from Palpatine and that put him in an unwinnable position. He resolved to kill Luke if necessary, but still wanted him to join the dark side. It nearly backfired when Luke overpowered him, because it showed Vader was no longer useful and could be replaced as Palpatine's apprentice. But Luke realized the error of his ways in time to stop.
From 1:02-145 I just get chills. You see the galaxy's hope fighting to protect his friends and family. against his own evil enslaved father. And its the moment of truth, and yet the music intimidates you from cheering. Instead of the hero beating the villain, you realize the hero may actually BECOME the villain! John Williams did a great job and this is his most powerful song in my book. So much weight is carried enough to bring back memories not only of Luke's struggles in the originals, but even transcends to Vader's struggles as a Jedi. And for the first time you don't want the hero to win. Because it'll be a victory taken from the wrong place that may even destroy him. As a child, these 43 seconds taught me the TRUE influence and power of the Sith. The Dark Side not just temptation, fear, or even anger. Its the dark power that COMES from those emotions that TRULY tempts you. The Dark Side is not scary because its evil. Its scary because its inside you. Its what you feel in your darkest moments. Its the Cold that grips your heart when your enraged. Its the power that doesn't ask you, but begs you, and commands you to take it in the name of all you hold dear...not realizing that if you do, you'll lose everything to it. Including all that you once stood for. No music has ever had such power over me than this one did when I was a kid. And every time I hear it, the scene plays out again in my head and I just get chills.
I wish they used this music in the newest movie when ******* dies. I tried my best not to spoil it for anyone cause I'm not an asshole. But if you have seen the movie, you know what I mean.
ROTJ soundtrack is probably my favorite of he franchise... so many powerful, uplifting themes and motifs: The battle on Tatooine with the first look at the Falcon and the X-Wing leaving victoriously The fleet jumping into hyperspace Into The Trap The fireworks over Endor as Luke cremated Vader. But 1:14-1:48 in this track is probably my favorite piece from the entire series... powerful, emotional, personal, victorious....as many have said, this is good conquering evil, and ultimately, love conquering hate.
1:26 Just feel chill every time I heard this, looking to Vader and how is taking steps back from Luke and realising how he was scared of his son, meanwhile Anakin was rebirth after 22 years being a slave of Vader and Sidius. This scene just get me goosebumps everytime.
What I love in this moment, is that Vader keeps attacking Luke, but Luke still loves his father and knows it's never too late to change. Luke gets angry, like all of us can when faced with such attacks from someone we love, briefly lashes out, then recognizes his anger, and comes back to love for his father. This unconditional love from his son was the final piece Vader needed to change.
First time I heard and saw this scene, was a moment ill never forget. THIS is how the fight between anakin and obi wan should have been in ROTS. THIS is the quality of emotion, music score and excellent character build up, tension and drama that the new episodes lacked completely. Truly spine-tingling, gutt wrenching stuff.
***** I think he's trying to say that the timing of the music was a bit...off. However, this slight imperfection serves to make it all the more sublime. It's unlike anything else John Williams has written.
As a piece of music on its own, it’s a heart wrenching tale of suffering, sacrifice, sadness and confliction. And that’s without any visuals - what makes great film music.
1:13 "if you will not turn to the dark site, then perhaps she will!" "NOOO" *activates lightsaber* i fucking love this scene and theme dramatic behind it.
John Williams is a childhood musical hero of mine. Even after all this time his music still gives me goosebumps. Props to everyone else that was involved with this too.
1:10-1:47 is the best single bit of music in the saga and of John William’s entire career. I’ve felt that to be true since I first saw this film as a small child. It’s totalizing in its immersion to the emotional stakes at play and has given me chills since I was four.
1:13 feels like this crescendo to everything the moment Luke topples Darth Vader this unbeatable foe both physically in the fight and mentally by rejecting the dark side.
Of all the light saber battles in all of the movies, this one is the greatest one. The raw emotion in this scene has not been topped since. You can have your dual light sabers and acrobatics in the prequels. You can have your fight with a dozen red guards. None of them will equal Luke vs. Vader EVER.
This track was perfect. It was "epic" and booming, fitting a final battle, but was also deeply sad, fitting the fact that Luke was beginning to fall. It's the first time I've ever rooted AGAINST the hero winning the climactic duel with the villain. Because winning that duel meant becoming the next Vader, a fate Luke has been trying to avoid for 3 movies. And this music just nails it...
1:13 " At that time Vader new that he F*cked up, and you just don't threat to turn Leia to the dark side you just don't, Vader knows that now"- Darth Morgan Freeman 123 BBY
This is probably the most beautiful soundtrack that has ever been made. Like it just shows in the music that the little one is reaching his full potential and is becoming more powerful than the father. It’s just so beautiful
1:13 Close your eyes and imagine yourself seeing the throne room duel in Qui-Gon Jinn's perspective. The throne room duel was first seen as a vision during the duel with Darth Maul and now that vision became a reality. You will know that Qui-Gon was the reason that Vader was calm during the entire ordeal. Even Luke never knew Qui-Gon, Vader senses his presence and knew he was watching all along. As you progress until the end, you will understand and put to your senses that Qui-Gon Jinn was the core in Vader's redemption.
This moment was so epic intense and powerful... This song gave it part of that effect in the movie, i loved it!! ALL THOSE SONGS ARE SO EPIC!! STAR WARS IS AMAZING IN ALL AND MUSIC!
Greatest battle and music ever. The depth, the emotions, everything coming together in the amazing final battle between light and dark, good versus evil, Luke and Vader, son and father. The beauty of the music conveys the heat of the battle occurring through it and it’s simply gorgeous as the saga comes to an unearthly close with the ætherial glory displayed here. Every moment in Star Wars has led up to this duel, the old republic through the clone wars, the fall of the Jedi and the rise of the Empire. The Skywalkers, legends and chosen ones bringing balance to the force through the light and dark, finishing the legacy made æons ago with the creation of the Jedi order.
Even when I watched the movie as a kid, this music struck me. It is in no way the most epic, grandiose piece in the movie, but the short section starting around 1:13 paired with the also short, aggressive sequence of Luke hacking at his father impressed me, and this is the music I still remembered after the movie. It expressed such pain. You could feel the reluctance to kill on both sides in the music itself, the music somehow expressed that two people who loved one another were fighting and that the true evil was not between them and yet they had to fight.
@@youvebeenmungaid1470the first one exploded because of Han the second one palps had tried to trap the rebels but didn't go well out of sheer luck and because of the ewoks
As soon as you hear the start of 1:13, you can immediately ignore any problems you might have with Return of the Jedi. This piece of music perfectly describes what the movie is all about, the Father/Son conflict between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker.
Gosh darn it guys... If there was 1 thing that disappointed me about TFA it was that the new music was not as memorable as either original or prequel trilogy's. It's so disappointing because, maybe a week or 2 before TFA release I came across a video that must have been Star Wars related because I paused the video & exited the window. The reason why I did that was because I had yet 2 expose myself to any promotional material for the movie, I waited a year without being exposed to anything you guys! I wanted 2 come into the movie fresh & so that included any new orchestral pieces by John Williams. But the snippet I heard from the video was so beautiful, it reminded me of this piece & I eagerly awaited 2 get 2 the part of TFA where it played... But it never came. The closest u get is Snoaks theme, but it didn't cut it. Love John Williams forever, but darn... I wish I had searched it when I was logged in that way I could look through my history. Does anyone know of music pieces like this?
I think you can hear the conflict in this composition. I can literally hear light and darkness, love and hate, peace and war, good and evil clash in its melodies.

White Raven Ya as I switched the lines in my head and you explaining it, it does make more sense.
White Raven only problem is expanded universe dosent count anymore
TheRevan1231 Only problem is, this isn't part of the Expanded Universe.
Though, to be fair, "Legends" still counts to a degree.

Only the EU material that occurs _after_ the Movies is really being ignored, in favor of Episode VII.
So be it.
I always get the chills to this last lightsaber sequence!
True, me too!
And then we get disneys saga YAYAYAY (Sarcasm)
God, at 1:13 I just want to break down and cry. That sorrow, that conflict.
charon7111 I feel like vadar didn't want to defeat his son.
I did the same thing as a kid! I feel like this scene taught me about tragedy.
Let people have Duel of the Fates. I'll take this as the greatest Lightsaber Duel score of all time!
Same :P
And the duel itself has far more significance than the maul fight, this was the galaxies fate at hand this fight.
@@scotchwhisky6094 The Duell of the Fates has the better cinematographie.
@@konservativen-schreck No, it has better choreography. Cinematography is much more atmospheric in this scene.
@@Sul_Haren No.
That tiny bit of the Anakin and Padme theme is so amazing! Williams is a genius for expanding that into a whole song for the prequels
+Josh Nicholson Hey, you're right! I didn't notice.
+Josh Nicholson Where???

+Josh Nicholson when exactly?
+Derringer Meryl At about 1:20
1:13 really does feel like the final tipping point for every event of the timeline before it. From the redemption of Revan all the way to Anakin's first real moments of doubt of the councols wisdom after Ashoka left. You can genuinely feel all the emotion and weight behind every lightsaber swing snd every musical note. Anakin's regrets, Lukes rage, both of their desperation and you just just FEEL the other Jedi long passed on watching in anticipation while the fate if the galaxy hangs on rhe balance of a Sons love for his father and his unwillingness to abandon him
1:10 - 2:20 : The whole saga's apotheosis, and one of its best music.
I think you meant "apogee" not "apotheosis".
lord of the rings and star wars gave us great movies and soundtracks
indeed
I don’t remember a single soundtrack from LOTT

Facts dude. Two best movie trilogies ever.
Gives me chills EVERY Single time...
To me what's so powerful about this piece is how it reminds us that we're not watching an action sequence; we're watching a family tragedy.
when i hear this.. ( 1:13 ) i can feel star wars just stop ... i can really feel the end... it is so sad.. but in a way, it feels good, like the good guys finally win!
The good guys actually lost, surprisingly :/ damn those rebel scum
The setting, the characters, the editing, THE MUSIC. This scene is one of the most powerful scenes in cinema history
Yes I totally, 100% agree with you!
But, I have to say, I allways considered the "scene" to end when Vaders hand get choped off, even though technically the scene ends when Palpatine gets thrown down the hole.
Goddamn it I gel chills at 1:14 It's just so powerful. I FUCKING LOVE STAR WARS!
1:13 Leaves me speechless every time.Breathtaking yet tragic.
+Jagger Davidson no it doesn't.
+nikefootballer09 yes it does or you have no basic human feelings
This just represents all the emotion in the entire saga for me , like it all leads up to this moment

Darth Vader: You cannot hide forever, Luke.
1:13 has this epic hauntingness to it. Very much a sound depicting what it means to let’s go and embrace the dark side. John Williams is a legend & genius.
1:13 it’s just such a work of art John made it really hit hard in that scene.
Press 4 for best part.

Crazy how back in the day everybody who liked the Prequels was bashed. Now it’s the other away around lol
@@TheFragrantGangsters thank you!
I’m pretty sure Vader wasn’t actively trying to kill him in a any fight
@@hectorvalverde5044 When they duel on Bespin, Vader was intentionally holding back because he wanted to capture and convert him. Once they duel in RotJ, Vader was giving it his all. He knew it was a test from Palpatine and that put him in an unwinnable position. He resolved to kill Luke if necessary, but still wanted him to join the dark side. It nearly backfired when Luke overpowered him, because it showed Vader was no longer useful and could be replaced as Palpatine's apprentice. But Luke realized the error of his ways in time to stop.
It’s like a mix of Vader’s theme, the Emperor’s theme and Luke’s theme all in one. Underrated music.
And padme's as well, its amazing
The most action packed lightsaber duel? Maybe not.
The most touching? Definitely
And the most important.
RIP to Darth Vader himself, David Prowse. He was 85.
I wish they used this music in the newest movie when ******* dies. I tried my best not to spoil it for anyone cause I'm not an asshole. But if you have seen the movie, you know what I mean.
definitely!!!
that would be awesome

SPOILER BIG ASS SPOILER!!!

ROTJ soundtrack is probably my favorite of he franchise... so many powerful, uplifting themes and motifs:
The battle on Tatooine with the first look at the Falcon and the X-Wing leaving victoriously
The fleet jumping into hyperspace
Into The Trap
The fireworks over Endor as Luke cremated Vader.
But 1:14-1:48 in this track is probably my favorite piece from the entire series... powerful, emotional, personal, victorious....as many have said, this is good conquering evil, and ultimately, love conquering hate.
spoken like a true jedi
This theme makes me sad but in a good way. Kinda weird.
If you take this piece outside of context, you’d still imagine it would be the final battle. Amazing
By far the best piece, brings back alot of old memories
I don't know about anyone else, but to me the part from 1:14-1:48 sounds like someone claiming their destiny. Just an observation.
Both did, Vader & Luke owned it.
lro001 yeah its ok
thegreatmoustachio Luke brought his father back to the light and Vader destroyed the Empire, saving the galaxy.
So powerful.
The Music of Anakin fighting Obi-Wan was Amazing!
Hey, even Obi and Anakin fight was good.
Unknown The fight was good but it could have used more emotion. It's Obi-Wans apprentice who he's had since he was a kid, it should be emotional.
Another comment; the 'dirty' timing just after 1:18 is a touch of brilliance. I don't know if it was deliberate or not, but it's great.
***** I think he's trying to say that the timing of the music was a bit...off. However, this slight imperfection serves to make it all the more sublime. It's unlike anything else John Williams has written.
You can bet that was intentional. These scoring sessions go through many takes until the performance is perfect.
As a piece of music on its own, it’s a heart wrenching tale of suffering, sacrifice, sadness and confliction.
And that’s without any visuals - what makes great film music.
1:13 "if you will not turn to the dark site, then perhaps she will!" "NOOO" *activates lightsaber*

John Williams is a childhood musical hero of mine. Even after all this time his music still gives me goosebumps. Props to everyone else that was involved with this too.
This is an outstanding song from a great, iconic scene in a brilliant motion picture!
“If you will not turn to the dark side, perhaps she will.”
“Never!!”
Chills.
Gay
Quite possibly the gayest
1:10-1:47 is the best single bit of music in the saga and of John William’s entire career. I’ve felt that to be true since I first saw this film as a small child. It’s totalizing in its immersion to the emotional stakes at play and has given me chills since I was four.
This scene is the absolute pinnacle of Star Wars.
One of the greatest songs from John Williams career, insanely epic and legendary.
Vader EVER.
1:08-1:13
"If you will not turn to the dark side then perhaps she will..."
"NEVER!"
1:13 Will *NEVER* fail to give me chills, honestly the most underrated music piece of John Williams
Darth vader is one of the best villains/heroes of all time.
Yeah man!
Agreed! But Darth Vader is a villain and Anakin Skywalker is a hero.
Anakin was a idiot who was thinking he can get a pussy and a power at the same time.
He was deceived by a lie.
Ro Tyler all the jedi were. palpatine was just to powerful, and ultimately, his plan worked in the end
Still takes my breath away.
Music is so beautiful. For that moments I live. John Williams is a genius.
The brilliance of this part in the film is that on the surface it’s luke vs vader but deep down it’s anakin vs vader
I also "feel" lukes fear at losing lea at 1:13 - 1:40 as he strikes at his father (whom he loves) but fears losing lea more.
And then he looks down and see's the wiring of the robot hand which he also has and sees they are the same! god these movies are the best.
This piece of music is so powerful it actually brings tears to my eyes.
1:13
" At that time Vader new that he F*cked up, and you just don't threat to turn Leia to the dark side you just don't, Vader knows that now"- Darth Morgan Freeman 123 BBY
This is probably the most beautiful soundtrack that has ever been made. Like it just shows in the music that the little one is reaching his full potential and is becoming more powerful than the father. It’s just so beautiful
Gooooooooood... your hate has made you powerful.
Let the hate flow through you.
1:14
Vader: “if you will not turn to the dark side then perhaps she will”
Luke: “NEVEEER”
This music really takes me back
1:13!

The build up, the emotion, Star Wars at its best
1:13 to 1:46
Even when I watched the movie as a kid, this music struck me.
1:13 is arguably one of the best parts in a theme, good for a death in a fan-film or even one of the official movies.
and then when it turns to my theme it could just be the bad guy laughing or somethin.

There’s a beautiful sadness to this theme. Like a father passing the torch to his son
As soon as you hear the start of 1:13, you can immediately ignore any problems you might have with Return of the Jedi. This piece of music perfectly describes what the movie is all about, the Father/Son conflict between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker.
can't believe how ppl are forgeting about these old soundtracks
This is the best star wars soundtrack. The entire series, the entire story is summed up in this moment.
That crescendo has the emotion of 3 movies wrapped into one epic score. 💪
I think you can hear the conflict in this composition. I can literally hear light and darkness, love and hate, peace and war, good and evil clash in its melodies.
