The man is soon to be 90.. What a legend! Great interview.
This dude is such a pro - he even makes foley sounds while he's giving a talk about lighting
first rule of interviews: no leather jackets!!!
Billy Williams is a master! He is one of the greatest Cinematographers of all time.
Different opinions can’t disagree.
Incredibly detailed and informative masterclass. Thank you for this. Please keep them coming!
I'd be scared to death shooting this interview (I mean, look at the title of this video. Your production better live up to it, right?). Kudos to the production team for pulling it off.
Such a wealth of knowledge.
I love these talks with cinematographers. I learn so much from their point of view on their craft. It's truly invaluable information.
So many lighting courses on You Tube etc focus on individual set-ups and it’s easy to forget the fundamentals of light continuity when shooting a scene on location and still make it look great, which he did. Would love to spend more time learning from this wonderful DP.
thank you so much for these interviews CookeOptics, please we want more :)
This could be one of the most helpful cinematography vidoes I've ever watched. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Mr Williams and Cooke 👌
Brilliant. A true master.
I wish I could spend a year with this man to soak up as much knowledge as I could.
Thank you CookeOpticsTV for this.
Excellent interview and explained in a neat and delightful way by a master. Thanks for this channel!

Brilliant, I think 'Ghandi' has exceptional cinematography, especially considering when it was shot.

On Golden Pond is breathtakingly beautiful.
Thank you.
My jaw was dropped the whole time :0
Legend
jesus, would love to meet this man
Great vid. I also learned to don't make an interview with someone wearing a leather jacket😉
3:32 not sure if he was trying to criticise the lighting person for this interview or not haha,
anyway great insights!
What an honur would be to be among his students.
This is what we miss from Cinematography these days. Billy didn't use a monitor to check the shot he had to remember (or take notes) what it looked like the previous day and we had Douglas Slocombe who never used a light meter
Plus we are doing DI not photochemical finishing
Wow what a smart technique. I wonder if they skipped high noon. Or the sun was always on the left of the set.
lunch break
I'm not sure what he means when he says that he doesn't like shooting with the light source behind him. Is he saying he likes shooting directly into the sun? Also, surely it's the clouds or lack of that dictate whether or not the light will be flat rather than the position of which you shoot?
1. He means he likes the light behind his subject and slightly off centre I.e. Not directly behind.
2. You can still get directional light with clouds. You just get lower contrast ratios until it starts to be similar to what you are describing as flat light. So yeah, position determines whether it is flat or not. Hope that makes sense
Ahh, thanks Jakn, that makes more sense. @@jayleon07
As much as I love the info.... how is this considered a MASTER CLASS?
Because Billy is a master cinematographer.
I never knew he doubled as DeadPool..
Am I the only one that’s bothered by the clips being in 24 next to the interview in 60
O dislikes!
