If one doesn't use GIMP on a regular basis the learned foundation goes away. I was asked to manipulate an image and I NEEDED this tutorial. AND YES, you did mention in the video that there is more than one way to do this but this helped me immensely. Yes, it was lengthy but aren't ALL projects lengthy? A NEW SUBSCRIBER! We GIMP newbies need you!
Oh my word!! THANK YOU SO MUCH. I've just downloaded GIMP primarily to remove the background from some of my cake pics (I'm a cake artist). I have little to no knowledge about image manipulation technology, so finding your tutorial really, really helppful. I'll be back!
You are the best.. I searched over many videos but wasted almost half a day, but the moment i found your video, my editing finished in less than 15mins..Thanks keep continuing..
This video is really helpful! I had used Photoshop previously, and only a few times, as a hobby. This tutorial is one of the proofs that GIMP is (non "geek"-)user-friendly. Will keep using GIMP and support open source projects! !
Thanks for this detailed, step-by-step tutorial and the inclusion of the image files you used. As a complete novice in photo editing, I found the instructions so-o much easier to follow:I knew what the finished product was supposed to look like. I initially had a hard time figuring out how to add the alpha channel: the option was greyed out on the dropdown. Somehow, I noticed that the image as copied/pasted into GIMP came in with an alpha channel (which was why I couldn't click on the selection). Experimenting, I removed the layer, then was able to add it back (probably an extra step). Everything worked fine from then on. I also appreciated that you didn't have your mouse flying willy-nilly all over the screen; you just moved it to synchronize with your explanation..I'll definitely be viewing some of your other videos.
Good idea. But while watching I thought of something simpler (still, thanks for getting the thoughts started!) After turning the background black, one could use the magic wand to select the black area outside the woman, which would not select any of the dark areas inside her outline. Then one could simply eliminate the top layer, erase everything within the selection, and have the picture of the woman ready to insert into the other picture.
Absolutely brilliant, helped me update my logo so it was transparent on any image, can't thank you enough - if anyone is moaning it is too long, I did it as I worked, paused a lot and then fast forwarded on the white bit, easy to do, but it helped me achieve what I needed. Stop moaning for the sake of it!
Very well explained. Great tip on not holding the mouse-button down too long. We all learn the hard way, when we slip into the main image and have to undo a ton of work.
Two observations bud: One I wouldn't have touched the area where her hair touches the background. That will cause issues when you try to use her image on a different background. AND two you could have selected the edge of the subject using one of the selection tools. By selecting an area you confine the brush tool just to the selected area and avoids your brush from bleeding into the blackout even if you stray into it with the tool. It would have allowed you to complete the project much faster. As it is usually the case there is more than one way to do things but the tips above would save a whole lot of ctrl+z. Great video
im learning gimp for work and these videos are really great slow and very well explained, I followed along with you and the result was way better than using the select tool thanks a lot for the great content 👍
I usually just use "select by color" tool on the background enlarge the selection and then soften the selection, seems much faster to me. If the background is too complicated and blends too much with what I want to cut out I manually erease the edges.
Many thanks for this. Do you think that in future tutorials you could explain the 'why' of each step in using this kind of thing (using masks) in GIMP in more detail? I want to understand the concept of painting black and painting white a little more, and also the function of the alpha layer.
Oh WOW..... and you're a perfectionist like me. lol I really love the last step of being able to move the object around and even scale it off of the background image. You can do so much with this. Thanks so much.
Great tutorial! I had problem when I tried to scale my mask layer, it would resize the visible but the mask wouldn’t move with it so you saw the white inverted left in the original position. I got it to work by right clicking on the mask layer and new layer choosing “new from visible”. I am not sure what I did wrong from your tutorial as you didn’t have that problem. Maybe this will help someone else. Thanks for the tutorial. Very helpful. Yes, it’s a bit more time consuming but it’s pretty crisp and clean around the edges unlike the wand or scissor tool.
In the layer which contains the layer mask, click on the thumbnail on left side which has the image and then resize, do not select the back and white layer mask as this will only resize the layer mask...
@@dcpwebdesignersI have done that, no problem. Funnily enough, I was born in Khartoum, Sudan not Ilford. I am English but living in South Africa. Anyway, just sharing.
@@dcpwebdesigners May I ask a question. I am trying to do a Caricature on GIMP, but when I come to move the head to 'Float' I can't as it is grey out. What am I doing wrong? Help, please!
Hi, I wondered how would this work if the background was a similar colour to the foreground, I'd imagine if that was the case when you invert the image the colours would be the same/similar and therefore when you try to adjust the levels it would be a bit of a struggle?
Question: I hope you can help. Currently running GIMP 2.10.10 and suddenly when switching from fill bucket to paint brush it loses the settings I had for paint brush. Becomes square when initially set up for round. Forces me to have to stop to change it each and every time. What could the problem be?
This helped me a great deal but I am unable to insert another background photo into the layer when I get to that point any idea why? I have jpeg photos I'm trying to use for the background but when I tried dragging them into the layer they won't go in. help!
Thank you for your video in this tutorial you exampled the process very well step by step in half pace to a beginner like myself I have subscribed to your channel of course :)
I learned to convert JPEG to a PNG, set alpha channel, then can use the magic wand tool, to select and delete large areas of the image, then eraser tool, zooming down to achieve fine eraser lines, Zooming in and out , I dont use this method, seems to be to many things to do, like making the whole like photo negative. I use gimp for cut outs for video parts and for music album art.
A great lesson on creating a mask. The only issue she doesn't fit that background the background is more in focus than her. All I would do is to blur the background so she would look like this was shot in-camera not a composited photo.
Thanks for this. I don't mind the lack of editing to make it real time as it gave me time to work on my own image. Look forward to other methods as well which method fits which type of image best. For example my image didn't have the woman as the best lit element so her jumper blended into the background making the mask area a bit tricky. Real time mask editing whilst looking at the end result must be an option in Gimp (to save you turning the image layer on and off all the time)?
I usually like to do this so that I lower the opacity when painting the mask so I don't have to click on the eye to check stuff. It maybe takes a little time to get used to as you kinda may miss a spot but after a while it makes masking a bit faster and smoother.
really nice vid, but now i'm trying myself and i find that this only works on an image that presents a brighter (white or alike) background compared to a darker subject. Is there any other way or am i doing it the wrong way?

I need help ! Plz ! when I try to put the background for my picture I wan to do another layer pops up with the background I want to do it with and the original picture then appears a mini square. All I have done all the steps you have done like what ?
I have gimp 2.10.24 everything appears to be the same but at the point where I go to colors, desaturate and desaturate again it doesn't change my picture gray, it doesn't appear to do anything with my picture, Any advice
Do you have a video on how to change the lighting of the front ground image? So it can match... Or how to add accent colours from the background? Thank you. :)
Thank you for this. Useful GIMP tutorials are fairly thin on the ground. Can I suggest that you skip ahead when masking out. Other than that it is very helpful.
My G! Thanks for this tut, really helped me on my small project, I was just thinking, if you know how, or can find out, as i don't know how, maybe you can do the lapse edit next time, that way it speeds up the slow parts for you and the vid still stays short how you wanted it, just an idea. Thanks again for the tut, just what i needed!
All the tutorials I seem to find are of perfect pics. There's always a shadow or something in all mine that just doesn't work. I end up using like 3-4 different software to achieve a result that I feel I should be able to do in just one! Thanks though!
Oh my gosh! This was/is helpful! I've been looking for so long on how to get rid of a background to make it transparent the easy way! Thank you so much :)

how would i keep the backround transparent? this seems to leave it there but hidden, it shows back up when i drop the image into powerdirector
Export file using PNG format
Why not use fuzzy select when prepping the image for filling white areas?
Fuzzy select too will not do a good job on fine hair lines....
You can use dodge and burn tool to clean mask without woring to much about edges. Or set blend mode of the brush to opacity.
Sorry, overlay not opacity.
Thanks for tip
Hi, is possible to remove background in multiple steps? I mean, if I've removed the sky and saved the image, can I remove the floor later?
Yes you can do this but you will need to edit the layer mask after
What about image where contrast aren't that strong and unfortunately the part of hair is very "confused". I ended up have a shadow around the hairs
Try ruclips.net/video/s7-EuQQyWDk/видео.html
Intresting but I'd just use the foreground selection tool after duplicating the layer, or possibly a quick mask selection
Ok I will check them out soon
this was a big help thanks.
Cool 😎 thanks 👍
Oh man than you so much for this tutorial! It was a HUGE help!! X)

I need help ! Plz ! when I try to put the background for my picture I wan to do another layer pops up with the background I want to do it with and the original picture then appears a mini square. All I have done all the steps you have done like what ?
Awesome job! How do I blur the background first to give it a more realistic feel or a more bokeh effect?

@@dcpwebdesigners have you done any videos on how to basically turn a image into cartoon character using gimp?
No sorry no video like that...
You can go to my channel and click on playlist for Gimp to see all my Gimp tutorials
I have gimp 2.10.24 everything appears to be the same but at the point where I go to colors, desaturate and desaturate again it doesn't change my picture gray, it doesn't appear to do anything with my picture, Any advice
Make sure to select the correct layer
Do you have a video on how to change the lighting of the front ground image? So it can match... Or how to add accent colours from the background? Thank you. :)
Will try make a tutorial when I get some more free time 👍
You need to colour correct each layer, hue, saturation etc
Thank you for this. Useful GIMP tutorials are fairly thin on the ground. Can I suggest that you skip ahead when masking out. Other than that it is very helpful.
Thanks 😎

Thanks 😎 yeah that video was a bit long lol

You can do the edges more easily if you use the dodge and burn tools at a very low setting instead of the paint brush.
Cool 😎 thanks 👍
Thank you. It's a long way to do but thank you very much
Cool 😎

All the tutorials I seem to find are of perfect pics. There's always a shadow or something in all mine that just doesn't work. I end up using like 3-4 different software to achieve a result that I feel I should be able to do in just one! Thanks though!
Practice makes perfect 👍
this is an absolute god send, thank you
Thanks 😎 have fun 👍
Hi, any chance you can give me a 4 or 5 star on Google review?

How can I make multiple text sizes? When I highlight one word it changes every single word so frustrating.
Create separate layers for each text size
@@dcpwebdesigners thanks
Oh my gosh! This was/is helpful! I've been looking for so long on how to get rid of a background to make it transparent the easy way! Thank you so much :)
Cool 😎
This won’t work so well with a light background I’m assuming.... Is there an easier way to do it manually?
