The Magpad was not designed to be used as a mouse pad, and it is not great when used as one. The pleather makes mice grip the surface better, making them slower/harder to move. You could probably get a better real mouse mat for less cost, with the extremely slight drawback that it would not perfectly cover your desktop.

It's a matter of preference, my mouse slides well on it and as I like it
How it is the surface without any pad?
@Erictraiven it's OK for daily task and light gaming, for proper gaming you do need an additional mouse pad.
