      HI:). They are SUCH and handful when you first get them! I have to say though, that once you make it through the puppy stage, you will have an amazing, best friend that will make you smile each and every day. How is the house training going?

      If you get a chance definitely watch my other video which is called top 10 accessories for your Yorkshire terrier. It’s got some really good tips and I have a link to a great playpen in the description.
      The best way to house train a Yorkshire terrier is actually to line the entire playpen with potty pads and keep them in the playpen whenever you cannot watch them.
      As they get used to going on the potty pads you will little by little take away a potty pad until they only have one left. This is the easiest way to get them used to using a potty pad.
      It will also keep him safe and away from electrical cords and things like that. Everyone will tell you that you are “mean” To do this but it’s honestly not mean. It’s the safest and most effective way to train him. Right after he is gone in his playpen you can tell him what a good boy he is and you could even take him out to play right after because you know he won’t have an accident.
      I can actually make a video on this technique soon if it’s helpful. I know a lot of people have asked me how to house train… And they are very stubborn little dogs.
      If you don’t contain them and house train them it’s going to be very hard to house train them later because in essence he will be “trained” to go wherever he wants.

      That is so strange that your vet said a playpen wasn’t good for him?
      A great book to read is a book called the art of raising a puppy. It was written by a group of monks that know a great deal about dogs and I got a lot of great information from it. It didn’t deal specifically with your keys so they didn’t talk about the playpen Muffin but… Obviously the playpen is for when you can’t watch your dog and that would definitely mean at times like going to work and things like that… And you would still be giving him lots of exercise and lots of playtime. Dogs are basically “Den” animals so having a safe place is really important. Successfully house training your Yorky woman having a great pet for years to come, and having some source of a way to contain your puppy is the fastest way to do so.
      It’s really strange that the vet would say that, I’m so curious why but I would read more about crate training and things like that… Because a playpen is just an alternative way instead of using a crate. But either way they are very humane and they actually help to contain a dog’s anxiety. I’m so glad that you commented on my video so I could share this with you :-)
      Also important to know, most dogs will freak out at the beginning when they are put in a playpen but eventually they will love it. My dogs would go into Their playpen even when the door was open because it became their “safe place”

    Hi Megan,
    This was an absolutely excellent video. My Husband and I are the proud owners of two yorkies 5 and 3
    Rosie and Ruby.
    I have grown up with yorkies from the age of 8 and now that I’m 44 I could never imagine being without this breed. Our previous girls Ria and Bess were 18 and 15 and we lost them 6mths apart which was the most devastating experience ever for us. People should really research the breed before taking on this wonderful commitment. Give each of yours a big kiss from us. Sending love to you all from across the pond in Bedford England xx

    Thank you for sharing such priceless info!! I know and in contact with the pups ( they’re now 2 years old), owners. The smallest one weighs 3.5 lbs. she also works at a counseling center!! She always wears a bell also, she’s so tiny & mighty! The one I kept, she weighs 4.4 lbs. the male is the biggest 5. Lbs. the other weighs 4. So they all do vary in the same litter. There’s no way I’d sell them to just anyone without knowing a lot of info in the pups long term care. Also, if the pups ever have a health change, we always connect about it, some challenges can pass down to any litter of dogs as well. Thank you again!! Your dogs are so stinkin adorable!! Your one I’d trust!

    My yorkie Bauer just passed in January. He was 13.5 years old and only weighed 5 pounds. He was tiny and was the runt of the litter. We knew we wanted another yorkie and looked high and low for a breeder who truely cared for their yorkies. We found a amazing lady and are getting two pups from her. They’re only 3 weeks old. She recently told us that she’s refusing to sell to one lady who wanted a 2 pound yorkie! She is estimating that our little boy will be around 5 pounds and the little girl around 4 pounds. The little girl is the runt of the litter. Many breeders have a list that you have to get on luckily our lady moved us to the very top of the list since she could see how much we loved our little guy. We are so thankful for her.

    Hey girl,
    Just got a “so called “ teacup Yorkie! I’m a Pomeranian mom of 15 years and lost her to oral cancer. I was devastated and my husband insisted on getting me another companion. We were literally driving from our local flea market and saw a lady selling on the side of the road. I have never owned a Yorkie but always admired them. Any whoo , we stopped to look at them. I thought no ha because I had made my mind up not to get a puppy. She had three puppies and another in a separate kennel. When I asked her she said she was almost 2. She said she had to sell her because she was being picked on by the pack . My heart melted for her! She is very tiny. Only 3 lbs. last weigh in at the vet. She could stand to gain a pound. She’s bony.
    Your babies are adorable. Thanks for all the information your putting out there.
    Wish me luck!

    • @MeganGraham
      @MeganGraham  2 года назад

      To be honest, I would get that dog scanned at a local vet to make sure that she’s not stolen. That sounds very suspect that a woman was selling dogs by the side of the road. I hope that she’s not a stolen dog, but if she is, her owner would be heartbroken. I’m also very sorry for the loss of your dog.

She was so offended at me questioning her and basically told me she doesn’t want a customer like me who will cause problems down the road. I know this is a blessing and I’m thankful I found you and have learned so much. I also found out the puppy’s mom is 9 which I’ve been told is too old to have puppies 😢

      Hi there, thank you so much for sharing.
      It is worth noting that Yorkshire terriers should not be brought home until they are 12 weeks old.
      I know this comment has aged by about a year, but I just wanted to bring that up for other folks so that as they’re doing their research, they understand that six weeks is too young to bring home a Yorkshire terrier.
      It is in fact Not legal in most states to bring home a puppy at this age.

    My baby is 3.2 lbs and is now 12 years old. She just went to two vets (I wanted to confirm what the first vet said), and she is very healthy! My only issue with her is that I got her from a breeder that kept her for 2 years because she was hoping she would get large enough to show, but she never did. Due to her being raised for 2 years to be a show dog she never really was much of a playful dog. She's very timid and doesn't like to be handled much. I guess this is also a blessing because she is so very tiny that I absolutely hate when anyone tries to pick her up anyway. Well, I just wanted to say hi, and that I agree that you do not need to break the bank to get a quality yorkie, as I have paid high prices before but my 12 year old was not a high price. The breeder simply wanted a good home for her. I actually don't know how I have kept this tiny little thing safe and happy for so long. I guess my over protective stance has worked out for her! LOL Have a great day!

It is very true that if you do get a small yorkie please be cautious of them because they love to follow you around and will get under your feet.. I just got my 2nd Baby Girl Yorkie and she is going to be a little bit bigger than my male yorkie..she weighs 3 pounds and is only 3 months old.. so you really don't know what your going to get...the breeder i got her from said she should be about 5 pounds.. i'm thinking she may weight a little more because of the way she likes to eat..lol.. it's amazing how they are so different from each other...my male has always been more calmer and my baby girl is so full of energy and wants to chew on everything, which i hope she grows out of...i'm working with her on that now..If yall have any advise on that for me with my female please feel free to let me know or if you have any questions about my male.. The man he works for has several ranches and uses one of the best vets. His vet recommended a vet that specialize in heart surgeries. He did the surgery and she had such a great recovery you can not tell she ever had heart surgery. She was so tiny the vet made a video of the surgery and did a paper on her as the smallest dog to have heart surgery.

    Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge. The algorithm sent me here. They must realize I'm thinking about buying a Yorkie. Unlike most other buyers, I am looking for an XL-sized Yorkie.
    I know the max breed standard is 7LBS. I am looking for 12-15 (read: teapot Yorkie AKA *Yorkisaurus*). Specifically for the health and safety reasons you mention. A large dog has a much better chance to survive trauma. For example, a 3LB dog that gets attacked by a pit bull when you are walking it will likely be killed by the initial bite. A 10LB dog at least has a chance if you kill the pit bull quickly. And if a surgical procedure, the larger dog is much more likely to survive. They also handle toxins--from a grape dropped on the floor to the full-dose vaccines you mention--way better.
    Regrettably, the trend is toward these tiny dogs.
    I really wish that there were working line Yorkshire terriers (I realize that it has been a companion breed for the past 100 years). This will be my first small dog; all of my prior experience is with German Shepherds. In that world, if you want a great dog, the last person to deal with is a show breeder. Instead, you want a working line (read: Czech, East German, even Soviet). They breed for performance (read: temperament and health) over all else. With Belgian Malinois, there are three lines. The KNPV line is the highest performing (e.g. used by elite military units) and takes it a step further. It's a traceable lineage, but not a traditional purebed. If you trace the lines far enough back, you will find German Shepherd and even bully breeds: all with the goal of producing a healthy, high performance working dog).
    Related note, I'd feel much more comfortable owning a Yorkie of any type with a land shark as a second dog. I realize that you need to supervise closely at all times. But things happen quickly (coyotes, stray pit bulls, etc) Nothing says "don't mess with the little guy" better than the growl of a ferocious 120 lb shepherd or a slightly smaller but even more aggressive Malinois.

    • @MeganGraham
      @MeganGraham  6 месяцев назад

      The breed standard has been 4-7 pounds for a long time. It is just the regular size. Have you thought about a silky terrier instead? Very similar but larger? My breeder always keeps a very large protection dog around to keep her yorkies safe.

    • @ILruffian
      @ILruffian 6 месяцев назад

      I've thought a bit about a cairn terrier. But they are well known for being stubborn and anything but trustworthy off-leash. Bichon Yorkie cross is another option. A friend has one that is a fantastic dog. 15 lbs.
      Either way, a German shepherd or better yet a Belgian Malinois would make an idea companion for small dogs. While they can never be left unattended, it's a huge deterrent with coyotes, pit bulls, etc. Like street criminals, they will often move on to an easier target. And if something does happen, it will buy you a lot of time.@@MeganGraham

    • @MeganGraham
      @MeganGraham  6 месяцев назад

      Yorkies are just what you decribed "stubborn and anything but trustworthy -off leash" just like silky terriers :). I would never recommend letting a yorkie off leash. If that is the plan, I would avoid buying or adopting one. It's not if something will happen, it's when. I hope you don't mind my candor, I hear the stories again and again. They have big personalities but need to be protected. Even in a backyard hawks have swooped down and killed them almost instantly. A big dog is helpful, but it will still happen.

You’re one of the first who’s confirmed my suspicions regarding this subject and, as a first time owner, I feel like there are a lot of things that aren’t known about this breed. Thank you for this informative video, it’s actually opened my eyes, even though I bought a Yorkie who everyone is saying it’s a teacup.. (including the vets lol). I live in Europe, in a country where animals aren’t as protected as in the Us for example and things like accessories (harnesses for his size, collars and so on) can’t be found.. I wanted to ask you if you think there’s a problem that mine is super scared to go outside, he’s 15 weeks and yesterday was the first time I’d forced him to stay on the concrete and explore a bit.

    this might be a news flash for some people, but all domestic dogs are abnormalities, if they werent we would all have tame wolves :) Breeding a new size or traits should be done responsebly. Some traits are not healthy, a lot of the flatnosed dogs are e good example of taking it to far

    I can't say enough good things about this particular video.
    The genetics of the breed in regards to size and color is something everyone should educate themselves about before becoming a yorkie owner.
    Our 2nd yorkie is 14lbs and a great dog. It took me 18 months to get our 3rd puppy after we lost our 1st yorkie. and just like you suggested i went through the reputable channels to find a breeder, and then the wait began. I choose her name at the time she was born. So far a great dog.

    Hi, I have 1 yorkie rescue she’s 4 and she weighs 3 lbs. we had a few problems. She sometimes yelps like she’s hurt. She’s coming now.

    I have a 4lbs Yorkie and she is 1yrs old when I brought her the owner said she was the runt on the litter. He had her parents and they were 6 & 4lbs with the other being the largest. My Brooklyn is so smart and I adore her. The only thing I worry about is the over crowding of her teeth so I brush them often to keep them as healthy as possible. She has health insurance but I’m afraid for her to go under anesthesia because she is so small. Do your pups have any overcrowding teeth and have you had them removed?

    • @MeganGraham
      @MeganGraham  2 года назад +1

      Hi there, thanks so much for stopping by to say hello. Yes, overcrowding is a very common issue. I think it is OK to put them under anesthesia, it’s just very important that you have an excellent vet that you trust very very much. It’s hard to avoid doing it at some point especially with needing to spay and neuter and the like.

    Hi Megan! Everything you shared here is so so so true!! We just picked up our yorkie puppy and he’s so small and tiny. Definitely need to watch where he’s going in the house! Do you keep yours in the playpen at all times and let them out when ur watching them only?

    • @MeganGraham
      @MeganGraham  3 года назад +2

      There is a fabulous book called the art of raising a puppy that explains a lot about training /housebreaking and I think you would love it. I only put mine in the playpen now if there is something usual happening where they could get out of our condo (we live in Boston). I put them in the playpen when we were moving, and also unpacking boxes. When they were little I put them in there when I could not watch them to facilitate house training, and keep them safe from things like chewing electrical cords etc. I do try to keep them out as much as possible, but keep in mind that puppies have to go to the bathroom very frequently (my rule of thumb is usually 1x per hour when they are tiny. Congratulations! You must be so excited! I can do a video this week on how I house trained if it is helpful?

    I totally disagree. I have had a teacup Yorkie which was 4 lbs. 8 oz. fully grown for 12 years. Yes , we could step on him but that’s with any brand new puppy & we resolved that problem by buying him a collar with a little bell so that we could know where he was. He was adorable . The breeder here in Maryland specialized in breeding tea cups ; her litter were 3 pounds - 4 pounds fully grown because of the size of mom & dad. It just takes a little bit extra more care to live with these dogs. I had a large apartment In college with five girls house and he was always accompanied by one of us. He was never alone because they do suffer from anxiety of being left alone . He was healthy , happy, he never had an accident . We were just very very careful when we were walking around and the little bell helped. So there IS a breed called TEACUP people, there is a breed of tea cups Maltese, poodles & Yorkies. A Little more expensive but they’re so worth it if you want to care for such a special breed because they need a lot of special attention and a lot of patience and of course a lot of love. These dogs are great for unmarried people,
    Couples and they are great in apartments!

      Teacup is not an official term. It's a fancy way of paying more for a typically more unhealthy dog. Yorkies are so tiny anyway I don't understand why someone would want one even smaller and more fragile.

    I think teacup breeders should be avoided not even because they often have ridiculous prices or they try to trick people, but because they often try to breed very small dogs with each other. It is not healthy and super dangerous for the mama dog ☹️ Getting a very small dog from reasonably sized parents (I guess Lola’s case) is veeeery different than getting a “teacup” from teacup parents.
    I am currently looking for a puppy and many breeders I contact won’t sell anyone a small yorkie without a no-breeding contract 😌

    • @MeganGraham
      @MeganGraham  3 года назад

      Hi there, you make such a great point, and I completely agree. When a breeder uses the word teacup describing their dogs, it tell you all that you need to know about that breeder. They do not breed the "correct" yorkiesand are more concerned with size than they are health, personality or breed standards. They also tend to send their dogs home before they are 12 weeks old (further misleading people who think they are getting an extra tiny dog) which may actually be to small to leave its mama. Great points, thank you. Megan
