I have only a high school education. Why is it that people (like the late Stephen Hawking) who can understand equations a mile long cannot understand the simplest of equations-that 0=0? you cannot get something from nothing. Period. Especially when there is no space to contain it. Science tells us that space and time had a beginning. How can you get all the material in the universe from nothing and no reason? This has to be one of the most fundamental questions you can ask. Something from nothing is impossible by science's own definition, yet there are atheists in science. Dr. Kreeft should teach science about First Cause. I just attended one of his talks in Monroeville Pennsylvania this past Sunday. Fantastic common sense. Just like Chesterton! The question of First Cause is scientific even though the answer is not. Is that any wonder since God is not limited by the laws of physics? God bless and keep up the good work, Doc!

As images of God that we are, we were given the reason, among other things (faith, revelation, charity, etc.). But at the same time we were created as finite creatures, in fact a little more than animals, and much less than the angel at the lowest step of the angelic hierarchy.
Correctly managing this finiteness requires absolute trust in the Father, anything else is a recipe for disaster, as the story of Adam and Eve shows.
The problem with our °modern" age is that the progress in science exalted our rationality while blinding us regarding the contemplation of our finiteness, and that led us to abandon trust in the Father for trust only in our rationality. And as all of human history shows, time and time again, that leads to irrationality, it's inevitable.
Therefore, as Adam and Eve teach it, "thinking for oneself", which seems to be a declaration of independence, is really a problem, because like crazy people, we begin to reason perfectly on false premises, and that is insanity, and finally irrationality. The antidote is to trust in God, allowing Him to be the One who guides our thoughts (reasoning) ..
