In terms of 1 to 1 comparisons, it is not as capable as USAs C5 Galaxy which can basically carry twice as much, with a 130 ton capacity vs 65tons for the Y-20. But the C5 requires an extra long runway to land and takeoff from, so not all airports can handle it. Thus the C5 Galaxy is considered as another class of airplanes altogether, IE it's super heavy strategic transport aircraft compared to "just" a normal heavy strategic airlifter. For a more fair comparison of a similar class and role, that would be vs USA's C-17 Globe master. The C-17 can carry 70 tons with a range of 4,500km. In comparison, China's Y-20 can carry 65tons with a range of 7,800km. Almost doubling the range of the C-17. So I would definitely choose the Y-20 over the C-17 since it is all about the range. The extra 5 ton capacity for the C-17 does not make up the 3,300km in range that it gives up to the Y-20. For the Y-20, it can carry China's heavy main battle tank(60 ton), and it cannot carry another light tank of anything with an extra 5ton capacity anyway. The Y-20 is also a new Chinese design, and incorporated all the modern technology like sleek stealthier design using composite materials, allowing it to also have a far greater range and efficiency. But the most important part is that China can produce them 100% domestically, which makes them one of the 3 select countries in the world which can produce their own heavy lift transport aircraft. The other 2 countries being USA and Russia. For China, this is huge, and it filled a crucial role which China badly needed for power projection. It was with these Y-20 aircraft that China used to deliver their modern anti aircraft/SAM systems that Serbia had bought from China a year or two ago, with 6 aircraft doing 3 roundtrips each for a total of 18 drop offs within 2-3 days. Iirc it was a direct flight, and nonstop flying operation in a display showing China's new power projection capabilities, now being able to fly from China all the way to the heart of Europe with a modern, domestically designed and produced heavy lift aircraft.
