Bobby Prince: "If everyone at id Software worked as long and hard as John Carmack, id Software would be absolutely untouchable by any competition. Everyone else at id Software would answer this by saying that they have a life outside of developing games! John would answer that he does too, but he'd rather be programming all of the time :) The reason I bring this up is that while I was at id during the development of DOOM, I stayed in the office many, many hours myself (after all, that's where all of my transplanted music toys were located). As a result of long hours at the office, John and I were often there at the same wee hours of the night. John would only leave his office to nab a coke or run to the mens' room -- that is except when he had something special programmed and wanted someone to see it. Those kinds of things happen a lot around John, too. He is always coming up with some cool addition to his engines. Many times in those wee hours, I would come to a point where I couldn't make positive progress toward completing a song or a sound effect. I would go out into the then main room where a pool table sat and just roll the balls around the table. I could look into John's office and he would be sitting there in a world of his own, oblivious to anything else going on. When I worked on this song, I took a break at the pool table and saw John working away. That's when the name of this song hit me".

It is so amazing how Doom feels so fluent. Not sure if anyone knows what i mean but the way the game feels when playing it doesnt feel out of date or old. I think thats why its such an amazing game
you’d expect a pseudo 3d 90’s FPS game to feel horrible but it just doesn’t. some games today don’t even feel that good
Playing doom on the PS4 is smooth and perfect, it tells you how timeless doom is.
My wife said she never seen me play such a pixelated game. I told her this is 1993!! Was replaying Doom 1 through 2 last year on switch
Doom is timeless
original F-Zero is the same way, nothing matches up to how smooth and fluent the controls and gameplay is.

This is one of the songs I played while playing Skate 3 on my Xbox. LEGENDARY
16 years....? ouch, i feel old, and it's still great! :)
26 now ^^
Considering Doom made heavy use of some pretty hacky C/C++ code (and some assembly, usually in the graphics routines) in order to make the game as optimized as possible so it could run on a 386 without spontaneously combusting, this song was likely made to capture the anguish of having to track down some obscure or otherwise hard-to-find bugs strewn throughout the game's code.
ID had to of gotten Slayer's permission for this. It's literally "Behind The Crooked Cross".

Fun fact: The name of the song cames from John Carmack expending lots of time programing the game code

One of the best tracks in doom
whenever i look at the track-titles to the doom soundtrack, then im wondering, maybe there is a deeper meaning behind those strange titles. maybe not, but anyway the soundtrack is very great, and for some reason i find the titles very genius fascinating! "deep into the code", "between levels", "the healer stalks", "countdown to death" OOH!!!
The healer stalks is a reference to the archvile
THE BEST DOOM SONG EVER CREATED
I hope the new Doom has music samples from metal bands like in the original doom. Because this version of Behind the crooked cross came out so badass that I thought that most of the songs from south of heaven actually fits well with this game.
+Mago it doesn't, but it does have it's own unique metal soundtrack. low, heavy, industrial metal. it's a good soundtrack, especially because it's dynamic in the gameplay.
+Mago it would be to expensive to do that now. by the time u pay the royalties/licencing u would only have enough for one level of the game.
+Fishy it has lots of stuff from the old songs though
it has references, but that's not what OP was talking about at all
You again?
I don't know why but I am thinking that this is the older version of DOOM 2016's alpha theme
