Banh Mi Sandwich at Bánh Mì Hồng Hoa - Amazing Vietnamese Street Food in Saigon, Vietnam!

- Bánh Mì is one of the most well known and beloved of all Vietnamese street foods. In this video, I ate at Bánh Mì Hồng Hoa, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Get all the details here: migrationology....
You may have already seen a short clip of this video in the full food vlog of the day: • Exploring Saigon - Foo... (you can watch this if you haven't seen it).
Bánh Mì (also spelled banh mi), actually just means bread in Vietnamese. However, outside of Vietnam, the term often refers to the Vietnamese sandwich, wrapped into a crusty baguette. In Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City), you seriously can’t go more than a few meters without seeing the next banh mi vendor or stall. It’s one of the most popular Vietnamese street foods, and it is great for both takeaway and sitting down for a nice bite.
Banh mi sandwiches are often eaten for snacks, or for light meals. The personal sized baguettes, which have influence from the French, are very light and airy, and they are not overly filling. The outside of the bread is incredibly crusty and crunchy, and the inside is very soft and airy. Together, the contrast of textures, makes it perfect for a sandwich. Like I said before, there’s a near infinite amount of places to get banh mi in Saigon, but on this day I went to a place not too far from where I was staying called Bánh Mì Hồng Hoa. While some of the other famous banh mi restaurants in the area are only open in the afternoon and evening, this restaurant is mostly open in the morning, and served a crowd of people for takeaway every morning.
I ordered their most basic normal banh mi, a sandwich that began with a nice freshly baked baguette (and by the way, they were also selling freshly baked baguettes, which were hot and fresh), that was cut in half, then filled with a mixture of pate, mayonnaise, a few different slices of Vietnamese cured meat, meatloaf, and some grilled pieces of pork. On top of that, she also loaded in a nice amount thinly sliced crisp veggies like cucumber, green onions, and cilantro, and then some Vietnamese pickled, including daikon radish and carrots. Finally, she added a little more seasoning, and finally added some fresh red crushed chili to give it some heat.
I have to be honest and say that this was one of my first banh mi sandwiches I had when I arrived in Saigon, and it turned out to be one of my favorites of my entire trip. It wasn’t the most impressive one, but I thought it was the freshest and the most well balanced of all of them. It had just the right ratio of meat to sauces, and it had a nice touch of all the fresh vegetables. The ratio and mixture was perfect for me, and their bread was also fresh and crusty. On top of having a wonderful banh mi, the staff, and all the owners of Bánh Mì Hồng Hoa were all extremely friendly and were happy that we were there enjoying their sandwiches.
I ate the banh mi and filmed this food video at Bánh Mì Hồng Hoa:
Open hours: I think open mostly during the morning
Price: This beauty of a sandwich cost just 17,000 Vietnamese Dong - money well spent and fully enjoyed.

This is by FAR my favorite sandwich ever. This week at work, company is going to treat us sandwiches , so they ask Quiznos or Subway, somebody blurted out loud " Banh Mi instead ! then everybody in the conference room said : YES BANH MI !!!!!!!
GlendaMarx ikr banh mi is so good.
Banh Mi beats Subway any day ! yeah !
Woo-hoo!
I was searching for a more famous banh mi restaurant in #Saigon when I bumped into this one... and it turned out to be one of my favorites of my trip to #Vietnam ...
#travel #food
OMG dude. You make even a sandwich look so mouth wateringly good. Thank you for making me hungry. LOL
***** You're welcome, thank you for watching.
Dani Haidir I would love to, just haven't had time yet. I'm hoping next year.
0.79 cents, that sandwich would cost at least 8.00 bucks here in america
XTheSonofTheSunX and that would be without the lettuce. Lol
The bread looked beautiful, even in a basket sitting on the ground, it still looked delicious. Yum, yum, yum!
Thanks *****
the reason why banh mi in Vietnam so delicious because its made from wheat and rice flour blend. and the seasoning sauce made from a lot of ingredients.
I still remember my first bite of a vietnamese baguette... to this day, still the best bread Ive ever tasted! :) your video makes me want to revisit my motherland asap! :D
fireflychen Cool to hear that, hope you can visit soon!
Man go to Italy and try out dozens of types eheheh with great stuff inside hehe
The look on his face when he dives in to that sandwich is priceless !
I totally agree, the banh mi is the KING of sandwiches !!!
Visited this place 5 times over 2 trips to Saigon and I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE this Banh mi.
On my first trip to Saigon 10 yrs ago, I chanced upon this middle aged lady selling banh mi from her push cart near Caravelle Hotel where I stayed. The taste was heavenly! After that first Banh Mi, I would go looking for that push cart every single evening AFTER dinner, just to savour that delicious sandwich. Your video made my mouth water, and I could almost taste a hint of the Banh Mi in my mouth!!!!
Had that like a million times already but I never get bored of the taste cause there are a lot of things u can put in it
I just spent over a week in Saigon. I tried 5 different banh mi places, including My Banh Mi (Bobby Chinn's) where they go for up to 105 000VND each and Banh Mi Huynh Hoa (which is famous in Saigon and has fast-moving queues all day - 33 000VND for really huge banh mi).
Hong Hoa Bakery was my favourite by far. Much tastier than the others. It looks a little different now cos the counter where they make the banh mi has been turned around so the banh mi makers now face the street. Also, in the 7 or 8 times I went there, only young girls were working.
Mark didn't get any roast pork on his roll. Make sure you point it out or get your translations right. (They have 2 types of basic pork banh mi, they're both good but the one with roast pork is incredible). It's big chunks of roast pork with crackling. I think the one with roast pork is 18 000VND and the one Mark got is 17 000 - but they seemed to randomly charge me 17 or 18 for either. Also grilled pork 'burger' banh mi is excellent but is usually sold out by 1 or 2pm (17 000VND). Fresh coconut in the fridge, 15 000VND each.
Next time try a little bit further. Try a street banh my at Dropped pin
Near Hẻm 50 Quang Trung, Phường 10, Gò Vấp, Hồ Chí Minh

In go vap district. I have eat there for 8 years

For people who don't understand, this is exclusive to the banh mi that Mark touched on in his original "exploring Saigon" video. It's a great vlogging technique. Rick Steves, one of the world's most famous travel vloggers will do a 90 minute video on Paris and then chop it up in to dozens of videos focusing on specific topics, usually adding additional video that was edited out in the original.
Great video Mark.
Cool, thank you Tosh T exactly. In the vlog it was just a preview, while this is a much more in depth.
Yes. In 2014, its cost 17.000, exactly is 0.79$, now, 6/2017, it is 32.000, exactly is 1.45$. It is the best in quantity, and price too. But it is the best banhmy in HCM city.
Anyway, in my countryside, banhmy is sold: 4.000, exactly is 0.22 cent.
VietNam, my country, my love.
I could eat banh mi everyday!
i don't think so dude(girl), it's not that good to eat banh mi everyday.
you will be over heat, erro erro
i was there 3 hours ago for my first banh mi in vietnam . and tastiness confirmed!
That was a killer sandwich. $.79??? That's unbelievable. I'd have 5!
Anywhere else it would be like 3 dollars or more.
stuff is super cheap in vietnam, american currency is worth way more.
Thanks Red Dragon Diaries
But you must also not forget, how much they earn there. For you with Dollar/euro is might be cheap.
PhysioA that's what I mean. For what you get it's a killer sandwich if I could bring dollars there.
My favorite sandwich of all time
Great to hear that Areena Thnanivas
I tried one for the first time a few months ago.... so good! so many flavors hit you at different time.
Kenny Lam great to hear that you loved it Kenny!
The most amazing feeling is when we're at home or going out, my Mum usually buys 3-7 banh mis (from a local Asian market) for us (Mum, Brother and me) to consume throughout the day if we get hungry at all. Banh mi is definitely one of my favourites as all the flavours combine to create a rainbow equivalent of flavours with each bite. From Australia :)
Aww my mom does this too! everytime my mom goes grocery shopping she brings home banh mi for me and my siblings 😁 - always look forward to them 😊
When I see Mark eat it's always a great time he is very respectful and glad to eat at different places great times and hopefully a great future eating and visiting other country's glad for him and family!!!!!
That looks immense Mark. I cant wait to get back to Vietnam to try one of these out.
Missing your content DF..
Hey Mark! Thanks for this video on the Banh Mi sandwich! You're a GENIUS at presenting food as my mouth was watering listening to you explain in detail the sandwich and watching how you ate it. You also made it a great journey in itself of obtaining the sandwich and especially eating it, a journey I'm now dreaming of trying myself!
First reply to this old comment. Wondering how your doing?
I cannot watch your videos while hungry..especially this one..your expressiobof satisfaction is so. contagious. .
i am a true vietnamese and tbh i have not got myself a banhmi for a WHILE but after watching your video, i think imma get one immediately. It looks so delicious and tempted!!!
I am Vietnamese and I also recognize Vietnamese bread as the number one thanks to your video video you are very good
Delicous. Compared with this sandwich, the big sandwich chain can go underground. The vietnamese baguette is outstanding. Cheers, chris
Thanks Chris TheLicewine
You have opened up my eyes to may new ideas in traveling. The food along with the views of the country.
Every time I watch your videos, I have to pause and get something to eat. Love watching you eat
I'm having my first ever banh mi tomorrow and might add that this is more than partially inspired by you, Mark. Love your work, man! Mark Wiens
I love the busy background noise. Authentic feels
I watched this clip both before and after our trip to Vietnam. It's actually funny how you perceive it differently after experiencing Vietnamese food. Before I was like... Bread? Meh! I'm not into bread. Now I just want tons of banh mi!
Mark I am here in Ho chin Minh city Saigon it is very cool my relatives are here and such so nice to see you love Asian culture
I ate here when I was in Saigon last month! Delicious, highly recommended!
My mom and I went to Vietnam summer 2016 (we're vietnamese, we had banh mi every single morning. Best thing ever
I love Vietnamese's food too especially "Banh mi".
Arriving in HCM tomorrow will definitely get to try this and again and again, great value.
Just seeing you completely enjoy the banh mi was worth watching the video!
Mark I can't stop but laughing (in a good way) each time you take a bite your head turns to the right and 'mmmmm' delicious.
How I did not find your channel before - LOVE IT!
My Own BS Hey, great to hear from you, thank you so much for watching!
Wow $0.79 for a sandwich? that is so Awesome!!!
Go Mark ! You make me starving each time i' m watching your videos. You are a great guy i can see it in your eyes.
It is the best sandwich in the world
I've eaten those sandwiches before and they are amazingly delicious and flavorful
Your happy expression eating that sandwich makes me want it even more! Looks so delish! Thank you for sharing.
Had banh mi in that store two weeks ago. Now it costs more though. A little more than a dollar but still the best sandwich. You will be surprised at the flavors and textures in every bite.
I remember when I visit Vietnam before, there was a restaurant selling fresh fish and soup. They called 'Kan Jur Ka Keo'... It taste awesome... the fish itself is really sweet and so many local went there. by the way the waiter could not speak English.. so I used body language... U should try
Awww!!! This looks DELICIOUS!!!! Thanks for the great tour around this sandwich!!!
I'm Vietnamese, I live in Vietnam, and I eat bánh mỳ almost everyday. It's the most popular and cheapest food in our country. Some people tried to move it into big restaurants, like upgrade it to something more special, like "bánh mỳ king" or some kind of this. But trust me, when you visit Vietnam, you can find the best bánh mỳ in every small roadside shop in anywhere in town or city, with the cheapest price that you can't even imagine.
My favorite one is "bánh mỳ trứng" which is sold for only 10.000vnd ($US 0.44)
Yup, it’s time for you Mark to have your 2nd Vietnam series. So many new dishes have been invented now. I would love a fruit focused video. so many new pho styles served now. How about all of those islands around the southern region to get away to? I would love to visit one or two but you go first Mark. lol.
Looks awesome! Only 79 cents?! That's insane.
Thanks pdude1911
pdude1911 peoples in Vietnam only need 250 to 400 dollars per month to live, so everything here is cheap. That banh mỳ cost 0.79 dollars, but the woman make 0.42 dollars out of that banh mỳ
I have never seen bread in Asian cooking except for this one,
That looks like a great sandwich, you take a bite and the crumbs go flying
Best way to eat banh mi is to take big bites and Mark is really really doing a awesome job at it. Respect!
Fortunate enough to have travelled a fair bit, not really a foodie & don't recall most food...but my god I've thought about this a lot over the years since i first had it few years back. Amazing
Looks so good Mark!!! I've never seen you do that many likes.. Really enjoy your vids... Thank you to you & Ying.
Thank you very much N Khan
You are hitting all my favorite Vietnamese food! Love your videos. P.S.: Your Vietnamese is not half bad. I could understand it all!
My favorite part of visiting my hometown Saigon is how cheap all the good food is compared to US prices! The first time I bought a huge bowl of pho for 75 cents, my mind was blown.
I just had my first on this past Monday. CHANGED MY F%#&@G LIFE! I highly recommend trying one if you haven't.
lol sounds like u tried drugs or sth bro
+Dungta Ng get highhhhh haha
+Dungta Ng haha tru
Look for bánh mì Huỳnh Hoa in Lê Thị Riêng st, Mark. You're going to love it. They open at 4:00pm every day. Enjoy!
MERRY CHRISTMAS !
Mark & Thanks for visiting
my country .
From USA .
❤💖😘
Great info...great video...and a great guy...we appreciate you efforts sharing all those great info.
Like always Mark, a very good awesome food review! .With respect Mr.Molina
Thank you Linzey Molina
never had one, but from what I've seen these sandwiches were made for me. The vegetables play as big of a part as the protein. Also, veggies don't lie when it comes freshness because they wilt easily .
I just had it and it was awesome! We also tried out a Banh Mi place really close to this one, where they have only one type which is really overflowing with meat. At this one we got a meatball one called Banh Mi Xiu Mai and it was fricking delicious. Just the right amount of everything and the meatballs so juicy and tender. Totally recommend!
Never gets old, the best sandwich in the world 🤠🇺🇲🇵🇭
Great videos Mark.... Thanks for sharing. Wow, you can eat really SPICY stuff.
I like the way you ate and your expression mark!
OMG Price - 17,000 VND ($0.79 US). I pay $6.50 Australian Dollars ($4.77 US) for my Banh Mi
+dqcruz32 Average monthly salary for a Vietnamese worker is $300 dollar. How much do you get in Australia?
+dqcruz32
I'm vietnamese
right
it is really cheap.........only cost= 0,5-1 $
+Cao Nguyen Le around 3k to 4k for average factory workers
lol i pay $4 australian dollars ;)
You're getting ripped off. The best places in Sydney, like Mascot Hot Bread (I think it's also called Hong Ha Bakery) were still $A5 when I left 7 months ago. Their banh mi are excellent. On the Gold Coast, it's $A7 to 7.5 for poor quality banh mi from places with low turnover - never a good idea with banh mi.
Banh mi is my favorite! When i visit vn, i eat one every day!
Dear Mark,
i do not know you personaly, but i think you are a big positive caresmatic person.
Like your vids. and you do a great job.
Wish you & familie a merry chrismas & a good, full of life new year.
Banh Mi is my favorite go-to kind of meal. I will never get sick of it, it's just so good!! I could eat half as a snack or even for breakfast because it's just so good xD
Great to hear you love it Cindy the potato
Mark Wiens Yep! And in fact my mom just brought home some :D
We love his expression.
i tried that last sept 7, hong hoa banh mi. superb and recommendable. 20,000 dong.. i miss it already
If that great sandwich weren't enough to make us all jealous, that price just felled me! The best banh mi I could possibly get where I live has half the filling and costs about $6.00 USD. Although the bread alone is quite worth it! Groan! I'll bet it was great, Mark. Thanks for the continuing ed for those of us who can't travel the world!
In the Summer, a banh mi is my go to sandwich if I don't make my own. Really good, and really inexpensive. Usually, it's 1/4th the price of a po boy (8-15 bucks).
Thanks for sharing Bobby B
Mark, you really enjoy the Vietnamese sandwich 😁! Your happy eyes show it! Hope you had a good time!
Just had this a few hours ago... LOVE IT! I'm addicted and can't wait to get another one haha thanks for the tip Mark
This was the video that started making me watch your videos. Awesome. Favourite video but probably the Philippines videos would be when you go!
I came from dong da,saigon, we used to have a house there, but we left in 1977, i remember eating banh mi in the street of dong da, they usually put cha luo or vietnamese meat loaf in there, you should try soy, made of glutinous rice and comes in color red, green, yellow, i searched youtube but can't find any video of that, also try the com tam, hell i dont know if they still know about those dishes i mentioned.
Bánh mì is the ultimate comfort food!
In Vietnam, the usual "Banh mi" may cost just $0.5 so to some local people this is already expensive. However, as a Vietnamese, I can say this is the best sandwich shop I've ever tried so far in my life. I live in the US now, on my way trying so many Vietnamese-American flavor but I can't find this flavor anywhere else
Damn that banhmi shop rocks my ass off. It is THE BEST in HoChiMinh City.
-From a Vietnamese.
That roll looks delicious, these have become very popular in Melbourne. Cost about $4 and worth every penny!
Great to hear that Karl Mckernan
Mmm, banh mi sandwich so good and crunchy I watch your video made me in hungry....thank your video...
Thank you Akon Lee
Thank you for dishes like Vietnam
Looks So good! Making this tonight
Holy mother of cows, that looks great! And only .79$ too!? For that sandwich here its almost 12$.
12 dollars!?!?
+buttafly72 79 cent!
+buttafly72
right
only cost= 0.5-1$
buttafly72, so cheap but think about the air plane ticket to go there too.
buttafly72 the banh mỳ in Vietnam cost about 0.39 - 1.12 US dollars, that because we live in a low living cost country
I bought a sandwich almost exactly like this but with a thinner long baquet bread at a Vietnamese shop in Sacramento, California USA and it was over $5.00. If you got that big thing for 79 cents....you got a great deal! But yes, it was an awesome tasting sandwich! :)
Went there on Monday, liked it! Then went to the one around the corner with the pork patties and loved it! Much prefer the second one. Half the price twice the flavour. :)
My mouth can't stop watering that I had to run to a coffee shop to have a tuna sandwich which cost me almost $5 😂😂😂 nice done Mark 👌
I love banh mi. Great fusion food.
A ‘must’ experience in Saigon
Hey Mark love your videos! Much love from Sri Lanka :)
Thank you Nithin Lalvani
The baguette looks awesome
Always buy those when I go to the Vietnamese suburbs here. SO good. Have never tasted one from Vietnam, but I'm sure the Vietnamese ladies at the Bahn Mi store here do quite okay. They are so popular here they are $4.50!!! Making some big money over there at the Vietnamese bakery. Quite the price compared to $0.79 right? Hahaha
+Jessicaisrealawesome
yes
right
I'm vietnamese....................price only= 0,5-1 $
Mmmmmy fave! Over here in Australia we call them Pork Rolls i always get mine on a soft bun with mo chilli and salt and pepper. Its $5 over here cant believe how cheap it is over there id get it everyday everymeal :,)
Great to hear that ingridjooyx
That sandwich looks amazing. I really want to take a bite.
Thank you realessence
That Bánh mì is very Delicious you guy need to try (I'm VietNam)
Classic fully influenced French cuisine! Baguette, pate...oh my!
I tried on before and it was really good i hope you enjoy it
Very nice sandwiches and she put lots of meat in it look good and.fresh French stick love this kind of sandwich thanks.
The Vietnamese bread is actually my childhood bread that I have eaten.
I just made some today, they're really simple to make! I grilled my beef lemongrass. Wow 79cents is super cheap, it cost me over $1 each to make at home!
