It's funny! Back in the day we didn't have half of the technology that we have today and they built good cars. Today they can build the best quality cars and parts with a technology we have but yet everything seems to gone backwards. It absolutely makes no sense. Everybody's so infatuated with gas mileage when it comes to these trucks and truck people who've been truck people all their lives don't care about gas mileage. The people who do complain about that are not real car people anyways. Who cares. If you're concerned about gas mileage then buy a commuter car but don't put those restrictions on trucks they should not have to fall in the same category. Also if they removed half of the tech that's in cars nowadays which most of us really don't need anyways the cars would be more reliable. The only thing it needs to run on computer modules is the engine and transmission and that's it. For example heating and air conditioning a standard manual module will work just fine it doesn't need to be hooked up to the computer system. They're more reliable and they'll work for years as long as you own the car and don't abuse it. I have a 2011 Chevy Silverado and the blower in that truck is a lot better than my 2017 Silverado 2500 HD that runs with the computer module system in the car. Blower in that truck sucks compared to the 2011

Yup, westcoastronnie, you're dead on. This push for gas mileage is because of CAFE regulations on gas mileage. Less reliable cars are worse for the environment, though. I wonder if it's an intentional push on the average consumer to consider an EV. Not many people enjoy driving a reliable toyota from years past. I do. I did modify it to suit me better like a true car guy, lol.

It was so loud due to road noise, vibration, and who knows what, that I was going to return it if I needed to keep it for more than a day. I informed the rental car agent about the noise and he said it's a common complaint because to cut manufacturing costs, Toyota has stopped putting sound deadening insulation in the Camry (at least the base model). On the plus side for Toyota, I have a 2010 Prius and last year they admitted a defect in the paint process and covered under warranty completely repainting my car. On the minus side, the process was a mess since we waited nine months to get the car in for the work, were told it would take 2 to 4 weeks and the dealer didn't have enough inventory to give us a loaner, it actually took eight weeks and when I went to pick the car up, they handed me the key fob and told me to go look for the car with it probably being out the door and to the right. Despite there being almost no new cars on the lot and tons of open spaces, I had to go halfway around the dealership to find the car parked in the back (good thing I was on a bicycle). We haven't bought anything other than Toyotas in the last 30 years and my next car will probably be a plug-in hybrid. I really am hoping I can find a good non-Toyota plug-in hybrid that meets my needs but right now the two best ones are still the Prius and Rav4 primes. Inventory of Prius Primes within 100 miles of my house (Chicagoland so lots of dealers) consists of one new car in transit and five used ones with the dealership asking for more than the original MSRP for a four year old car.

IMHO it seems serious. From my understanding there's two main bearings that are failing that could indicate a design flaw of the bearing size, clearance, or even the oil weight. It seems to me that 0w-20 is pretty thin for a motor that puts out as much torque/load as the Tundra's motor. Thin oil helps a little with MPGs and works well in lower output motors like the A25 that uses 0w-16, but it leaves little margin for error in higher output applications.

  • @RogueDemagogue

It's starting to look like there was an oversized bearing being placed into cylinder #1. That is the only part # Toyota changed out and replaced with a new part #. It's also the main trouble area, so it's not metal shavings destroying that bearing, it's a bad bearing to start with. BTW, you left out the Toyota Prius (Stop Sale) because the backdoors were flying open as you drive, lol.

My father used to buy used 30k mile Detroit cars because most of the depreciation had happened. Then he sold them when they reached about 60k miles as that was about when the serious repairs started to appear.
Later on we enjoyed "planned obsolescence". The car market made a major move to Japanese brands in the 1970s and 1980s because buyers got better quality for their buck.

They are learning the same thing Kia learned over the last 10 or so years - largely not being able to use the "tried and true" Kia had to learn it all - and they took to even doing their own electrical (many "good brands" subcontract that harder item to China or Germany), and even steel has been highly engineered right from development. The problem is that with new ways and technology and doing things in-house - you will have failures and learning and "other brands" will be ruthless against you during that process. You also have to learn and along with larger range and volumes you have to read "live data" much quicker and with extreme scrutiny - this is not an easy task, it is cultural and goes deep into the dealers in how they approach the product during and after sale.

I upgraded from a 2015 Tacoma to a 2023 Tundra and chose the Tundra over all full size pickups based on Toyotas reputation. I like my tundra, it’s a hybrid with the TRD option and seems to run well but now I’m definitely worried. I splurged on this vehicle as it was not cheap and I hope Toyota remedies any issues with the vehicle. I still have my Tacoma just in case.

Too much thought in pushing out turbos, and relying too much on Hybrid systems for all applications. Prius, ok. Truck that pulls 10k lbs, ehh. They had a problem with the 3.3 V6, they quickly fixed it. I would be shocked if they brought back the 5.7 in order to sell them. At one point, the cams cracked from not being cast properly and had air bubbles in them.

It’s an unreliable overrated brand. Stick with Subaru or Mazda….better all the way around. Just don’t believe the idiots about cvt and head gasket issues. Toyota drivers have other brand envy lol

RAV, Corollas & Camrys are in major need as they are some of the few reliable lesser priced vehicles on the market.

Just bought my daughter a 2016 Rav4 LE w/111K miles. Very clean inside and out, drove/braked straight. Plain and ordinary but will last her for years. To hell with turbo motors and CVT trannys.

Few owners have reported catastrophic issues with their Tacoma transmission. Would this error eventually become yet another recall?

Then is there a car brand to go with instead? I’m an inexperienced car buyer. I don’t want the frustration of having to second guess myself on an expensive purchase. Is Mazda more reliable instead? What about Honda?
