@@martindohnal55 Thank you. It may be sunny in California, but I live in the northern mountains where today it is snowing! This is why I love Tromsø, it doesn´t get as hot as California, and the winters due to the Gulf Stream are not much colder than what I experience here. I am planning to return to Tromsø some time in 2023. I shall see how things develop. Best wishes for the New Year!

There are no bears or other dangerous animals around Tromso. There are few bears close to the border with Sweden, but even there I would feel safe, they are very shy and avoid humans.
My maternal ggf was Norwegian, Thor Degerness from the island named Degerness. He became a farmer in North Dakota, USA. My Swedish ggf came to America from Lapland at the age of 7. His father changed their name from Swanson to Erickson because there were “too many” Swansons where they settled in the U.S. I wouldn’t be able to tolerate polar nights. I can barely tolerate January in the upper South, US.
Well, polar night is nice experience, for some it's once in a lifetime experience and it's enough, on the other hand the people I spoke to here love it (most of them).
@@martindohnal55 My life is the polar opposite of your life. I live in Sarasota Florida in the United States the sun rises and sets day of the year however 11 months out of the year it is sweltering hot the 12th month drops down to 60° maybe 55 at night, and that Celsius , what I would give to be able to trade
I imagine for someone like me, living in the northeastern US, the short twilight-only "days" would be a bit jarring at first, but nothing compared to living in Svalbard where it's pitch-black 24/7 and you have no day/night cues during December. And Tromso's climate is similar to ours (but with cooler summers). I think in Svalbard there's like 4 hours of astronomical twilight (which just means that you can't see the faintest stars when looking through a telescope that you'd be able to see in total darkness, which for most people is indistinguishable from night).
Just spent the last few days of January 2023 there. The polar night profoundly touch me I seen whales I seen the northern lights what a great place, but to me the polar night was the highlight. The lighting can't be capture on a photo or video.
There are no bears or polar bears around Tromso, you would need to go to the Swedish or Finnish border, there are few bears, though very shy, not like in the US or Canada. Closest polar bear live on Svalbard.
Thank you. A very nice video...would have liked a little information along the way. What time was it? Are the lights up because it's Christmas or because it makes it more bright during the Polar nights? What was that place in the beginning that looked like you went into a tunnel in that brick/wooden shack...etc.
I took this video through the December, at different times. The lights are up because of Christmas, though there are lights in the streets everywhere, even when you go cross-country skiing on the island at midnight.
It's dark in the UK all winter. When you wake up at 7am, dark and when you come home at 4pm dark. We just get rain and no snow. Rather live there than see depressing rain, at least snow makes everything look pretty! Roll on summer then I can visit the lake and go out walking!
They also have a period where the sun doesn’t go down for four months I believe if that’s wrong please correct me I would love to live there or Salvard not sure if I spelled your name of that town correctly it’s so beautiful and I believe the only thing you ever have to worry about is polar bears
Polar night is getting to the end here in Tromso, but in Svalbard it is much longer and even during day much darker, as it is closer to the North pole. I 'll check that channel, thanks.
