- In this vlog, I go on a Northern Lights tour in Tromso Norway to look at the Aurora Borealis in real time. You will experience the joy of seeing the auroras from the aeroplane as we begin our journey, outside my hotel in Tromso city as I go for a stroll, during the excursion when we chase the Northern Lights from location to location, when going up the cable car to Fjellheisen and surprisingly enough, while waiting at the bus stop down the hill on the way back.
You will find that what we see with our naked eye is not the same as when the Northern Lights are captured in pictures by our cameras and that longer exposure time amongst other settings is what makes the auroras greener than in reality.
Plus you will see how cold it gets there and how to dress up warm to make the most of this once in a lifetime experience.
That's the excursion I booked:

this is a great video! i love how you decide to travel to norway to see the northern lights, and you get to see it several times!
It seems the universe has a way to make the things you wish from the bottom of your heart to come true.

Thank you. Do you have anything that's overdue as well?
Agreed
Great video! Cheers
You're welcome :)
What was the camera equipment that you used? Was it just an IPhone camera? Tripod? What was the exposure settings to capture the lights? How much did you spend on transport?
I used the DJI Pocket 3 to film. If you have a recent smartphone, you'll get good photos but with video, it's more tricky as you're filming in pretty much pitch black and you can't use long exposure. I've had to denoise the aurora footage when I was on the plane and the excursion. Check the link in the description to see which excursion I booked and what the costs are now.
must be fun
It was a nice experience just very cold though. Have you been?
@@fougiss yeah looks like it, nope, never been to europe
I think using cable cars to see Aurora is a good idea and cheaper. Is that very windy on the top?
In December when I went, it was very windy and cold but there's a shop at the top where you can take shelter and have a hot drink.
Tjats preety good reason in my opinion
Do you have anything that's long overdue on your bucket list as well?
Finding kania the mushrum that's taste like meat
Wow! When was your visit?
Dec 2023, are you planning a trip there too?
What month is this ? I am travelling in mid Oct wondering what the odds for me.
It was the first week of December. I highly recommend you do the husky dog sledding too, it was an incredible experience for me.
what was the name of the hotel? was it nice? Thank you for this video.
It's Enter Amalie Hotel which is 2 mins walk from Radisson Blu where most excursion pick ups are done.
The people on the reception were really nice and helpful and that's the only budget hotel that served breakfast (hot, not take away types) that I found.
Room was clean and warm too.
I went in Dec 2023 so if you want to know anything else, ask away while it's still fresh in my mind :)
Hi can you share the exact aurora tour you’ve taken ? I tried the link, too many packages to look at. Tks 👍
Thanks for watching my video. I've just tried the link in the description and it takes me straight to the tour I've booked with reviews. Maybe it was a glitch, so let me know if it still does not work for you.
Update: There was an issue with the short url as it would sometimes take you to the exact tour and sometimes to a search page, so I've updated the description with the correct link now.
Hey there! The link you’ve shared still doesn’t show the exact tour you’ve bought.
Here's the direct link: www.getyourguide.com/tromso-l32375/from-tromso-small-group-northern-lights-tour-t189210/?partner_id=QFRUW6A&cmp=norway-short-url&mkt_cmp=true
When did you go? Mid February?

When I was making the video, I actually wondered how many people would notice this. It highlights how slippery it can get and ideally you need shoes with a good grip. You certainly deserve a medal for your attention to detail :)
Emotional watching this! Did you see them in UK on 10/11 May? Best night of my life but still going to make the trip to Tromso with my dad who missed seeing them!!!
I didn't even know about it until a few days later but I have the whole experience engraved in my memory from the trip. Your dad will surely enjoy this. Keep warm!!
Wow it is amazing 🎉 I am planning to travel to Tromso just to see northern lights with my husband and 6 years old daughter. Do you think chasing aurora will be suitable for my daughter? And i think this will be our only chance to travel for northern lights so which month do you suggest for tromso? I guess you had some tips while you were there 😊 thanks.
To maximise your chances of seeing the auroras, it's better to travel during the winter months. In my video, you'll see how cold & windy it gets walking in absolute darkness under heavy snow away from city lights. The excursion lasts around 6hrs and you're idle most of the time looking at the sky, so those are things to consider when bringing your daughter. Dress like you're going to the North Pole and go with a tour where professional photos can be taken if you're not good with adjusting camera settings manually. All the best :)
Amazing! What month is this?
December :)
Can you see the aurora in Svalbard?
Definitely but it depends on the time of the year that you travel and how clear the sky is on the day of your tour.
The snow sound is very annoying
I'm sorry you feel this way but I included as many natural sounds as I could to give people a better idea of what it's like to chase the auroras.
