  • Type 2 diabetes, formerly called adult-onset diabetes, is the most common type of the disease, affecting 95 percent of people with diabetes. Type 2 diabetes affects people at any age, even during childhood. However, this type of diabetes develops most often in middle-aged and older people, and those who are overweight and inactive.

*My daughter drinks lots of water and urinates with the same rate, there are no other symptoms to show if those have anything to do with diabetes. This is a good information that I have gone through **Diabets.Care** She is 2 years 9 months, hale and healthy, have not done any blood test. But I am not certain if one can get diabetes at such a tender age. Please I will like to know more on that*

Think before you have a drink. Water has no calorific value drink only water. It takes a lot of calories to heat even a small glass of water to body temperature, keep the water in the bottom of a cold fridge it works better and uses more calories when you drink it.

As a retired veterinary pathologist, (with some knowledge of chemistry, lab tests, & disease) I found both Kathleen and Jessica's presentations very understandable, well documented, and logical, with good simplification and summarization of useful guidelines. As a moderate Type II diabetic myself, I only wish I had stumbled on to this video earlier. In my opinion, ALL dietitians counseling type II diabetics should make this video required viewing for their patients. It prepares them for specific individualized followup. Thank you so much for this great contribution! - Jim Eastep, MT, DVM, Vet Path (ASCP). Do you have additional followup videos available to us in 2021?
What are the effects of the use of Truvia/Stevia as sugar substitutes in controlled study? I use them, but am becoming fearful that they modify my gut biome, and may not overall be beneficial for glucose and craving control, but my stomach cannot handle coffee (which I need for alertness) without some sort of sweetner and creamer. What alternatives can you suggest?

Current studies show no effect of non-nutritive sweeteners on blood sugar, and mixed (but likely no effect) on A1c. There's some evidence that its not great for gut biome, but that can be combated with prebiotics (a variety of fibers) and probiotics (yogurt, fermented foods like kimchi which goes great on a grilled cheese). Try a cold brew with half and half (but not from Starbucks, they burn their beans) its less bitter and with a medium roast it really brings out the roasted chocolate flavors

If carbohydrates are sugar and sugar is what causes diabetes what if we cut out all carbohydrates and went on the other two macronutrients fat and protein and our body went into ketosis? What would that do to our diabetes?

My mom is not statistically significant or peer reviewed but her experience has had real significance among her circle of friends and family.
2 1/2 years ago, my 80 year old mother finally had a follow up appointment with her physician which was delayed for months because her doctor has been in charge of treating Covid patients in the hospital and in nursing homes and was not able to meet with her. She had a full blood panel taken for this visit and her doctor was astounded at the progress she had made during the last year. She is now no longer diabetic and she was instructed to stop taking insulin after having been on it for 12 years. Her doctor also praised her kidney function which has never looked better. Also, she couldn't believe that her total cholesterol was only 139, with LDL of 67, HDL of 60, and triglycerides of 82 which is a big improvement for her. According to the Framingham Heart Study, these numbers mean that she is virtually "heart attack proof" as many plant based doctors have noted. Her physician (Johns Hopkins med school grad) mentioned that she is reconsidering the diet for her family based on this experience. She also asked my mom to share her experience with our community after the pandemic. All of these results are exactly what I had hoped would occur. Here is the menu that I had developed for her to try to mimic what she was used to eating -> GSP Mother's Menu - While this menu is not a pure whole foods plant based diet, it appears to be health promoting enough to work for her. I plugged her bloodwork test values into the Levine Biological Age Calculator and she has aged minus 15 years during the last 3 years. I joke with her that she may be required to give up her Social Security benefits if she keeps going like that. My understanding is that low carb diets are a workaround that do not address the root cause of diabetes which is excess intramyocellular lipids (also fatty liver/pancreas) and the resulting insulin resistance. Excess saturated fats and refined sugar/flour are the most common cause of this metabolic system failure. Unless a person can eat whole food complex carbs again without a prolonged spiking of their blood sugar, type 2 diabetes has not been reversed.
ps - She was able to get off of all blood pressure medications after 3 years, tapering off so as not to over-medicate which is dangerous because it can deprive tissues of necessary oxygen and nutrients.

All carbs = sugar. If you lower your carbs enough (20grams/day) and increase good fats, you will begin to burn fat for energy. Fat burns very efficiently (fat consumed or from around your belly). Keto diet is the best diet for reversing diabetes and loosing weight. Yes, you can reverse diabetes. If you lower your carbs AND fats you will break down muscle for energy so don't be afraid to consume fats!

I'm sorry but I think their understanding is completely wrong. A type 2 diabetic person needs to avoid fruits and simple carbs like the plague. It's the carbs that got them there in the first place. The constant demand for insulin makes people insulin resistant and then eventually these people suffer from diabetes and complications associated with that condition. As a side note, insulin is the fat storage hormone and when present in the blood stream for prolonged periods of time, prevents glucagon from doing its job which signals the release of fatty acids.
To say that carbs are the preferred fuel source for the body is a complete falacy. Fact is that in our 2 million years of evolution, carbs were not always available. Maybe 2 or 3 times throughout the year if you happened to live in the right area. In the northern hemisphere, once a year and during that time of abundance, the humans would stuff themselves and gain a lot of weight for times of famine. Access to fruit must have been a problem because we had lost our ability to climb trees. Hum!
Simply put, the type 2 diabetes condition (not disease) is easily reversible. The idea is to limit the carbs so that the body can regain its insulin sensitivity. As insulin goes down, glucagon will step in to signal the release of fatty acids that will be utilized by the liver to be converted to ketone bodies to be used by the entire body. And yes, the brain is more than happy to run on ketones after its adaptation. Sugar levels in the body will normalize and inflammation caused by the constant high insulin levels will disappear.
A new recommendation would be very easy. It goes something like this. Eat some leafy green vegetables (non starchy), very little fruit, moderate protein but the bulk of the energy needs come from fats (all naturally occurring fats are good). Simply put, eat real food; eat whole foods. If it comes in a box or is processed, don't eat it. If it's man made, don't have it.

***** Yep, this is the establishment old school paradigm. Nice in theory. Virtually impossible to attain in practice (unless some sort of 80, 10, 10 pattern is followed). If that's what they are saying, then, say it! Don't dance around the issue and waffle about "low fat" without defining it.

The second speaker is full of BS. If you are diabetic you must avoid carbs. If you want to keep your feet and legs and eye sight you must cut carb down to non-starchy vegetables. She has been educated by the main stream propaganda mill. I am pre-diabetic and my blood sugar were out of control on a vegan diet. I was low fat vegan for 9 months and vegetarian for 6 months before that. My cholesterol went very high as did my triglycerides and A1c. My hair started falling out and I gained weight. I went on a ketogenic diet of low carb high healthy fats and medium protein. After 6 months had my blood work done again and it all dropped into the normal range. My triglycerides were cut in half. My hair stopped falling out and I lost 15 pound and am still loosing after a year. I didn't listen to much of the first speaker because she just turned me off with her errors right out of the gate. So if you want to control your diabetes, loose weight and feel great and never be hungry again check out the ketogenic diet!
