Geelong destroyed a team with a single play | Elite Moments #2

- The 2011 AFL season averaged two ten-goal-or-more wins per week. The highlight of this season of batterings was in Round 19, when Geelong took Melbourne behind the bike sheds. They broke their opponent with an appallingly dominant play - The Corio Exorcism. Football has never seen its like since...and yet it's never really been brought up again.
This video's a bit of a lockdown freebie, as the final part of the Crows doco is still a couple of months away. Still, at least the Elite Moments series is now, y'know, a series.

As a lifetime Cats fan I always enjoy vids like these. Who can forget 2011, when Collingwood only lost three games.... all of them to Geelong. But dude, it's not Cor-ee-o, it's Cor-eye-o. Drive down there one day and stop at the Corio Bay Roadhouse for a burger... It's a game day tradition.
Yeah apologies about the pronunciation! I'm hoping to get down to Kardinia Park someday, hopefully while the Cats are still serving up great footy.
@@thegaz-man You might want to check a map before you do that. Kardinia Park is in South Geelong. Corio is in North Geelong. I'd hate for you to get lost. Particularly in Corio.
LOL! It took a lifetime for them to finally win one!
1963-2007
@@Thelivewire64 4 since sure makes up for it. :)
Geelong have 4 of the top 9 scores in afl/vfl history and 5 of the top 19 biggest margins in history. It's fair to say that no team can kick your arse like Geelong when you are having a bad day
They do it in a variety of ways too - from Ablett scoring 10 by himself in the 90s to the even spread of the Thompson/Scott era contributors.
Either way, they're super to watch!
Totally agree with you. But don't they have the most losses in grand finals?
As an Essendon fan.. yes...
Beautiful game and even better club. These two clubs are the longest continuously operating professional football clubs in the world. No better team to follow than Geelong - the players, the culture, the captains. Fantastic video mate.
(yes I'm an absolute nuffy)
Haha aren't we all nuffies to some degree 😅😅
Geelong is absolutely unique in the AFL, a town built around its footy team, and a team that for 30 years has been almost perfectly managed. Fascinating team to study.
I've long wished Jon Bois/Secret Base would make content for AFL (and other Australian sports), turns out you're out here making the magic happen! Really nicely made vid
Thanks! Yeah I think they've only got one Aussie Rules vid and even that's about a NEAFL match
Tanking clearly occurred in that game. Geelong were tanking and could have easily got the record score if they were trying.
I love how Jeremy Howe was listed as awful, but he's really turned into an amazing reliable defender. Oh and a premiership player
I did note that I was being a bit harsh on Howe, even as a rookie he showed talent.
Amazing how he's taken his game to a new level at the Pies, wayyyy more than just a hanger merchant now. Truly elite player.
I used to remember coming down from from Melbourne to watch Lions kick Geelong’s back side at Kardinia park in the early 2000’s including Buddha Hawkings last game, all the grumpy Cats supporters used to loose it, it was so satisfying lol
Man as a dees supporter this game hurts but winning in the preliminary final against the cats by 83 points and won the premiership make ups for it
Really incredible how your lads managed to turn it all around, they earned that flag. Enjoy those celebrations mate!
I loved that game, any game which a team score 200+ points is the most exciting
The more teams scored, the more i get keen...
I'm a melbourne fan and this was shocking, didn't really watch them back then. The shame an 11 yr old Dees supporter felt. Had some elite wins at Kardinia Park too tho. 2005, 2015 and 2021. Good win by the Dees last night
Lol everyone thought Chunk (N. Jones) was gonna be the games record holder, didnt play another game.
Can't imagine what it would be like, watching as a fan of a team (well, both for a 180 point loss and a Premiership, really). That 2021 win was insane, your boys sure got redemption.
Yeah, real pity Jones didn't get that record. Really liked him as a player, and always seemed a principled and good man.
Great vid :-) however Maloney was sick and pulled out that day and slept through a lot of the game in the change rooms. Of course he was stat-less.
Probably the luckiest Demon that day, in that case!
i think poor Brett was having nightmares that he was not still playing for the cats - poor bloke gets traded then cops this from his old team - but yes he was sick!!
12:04 With all fairness to Tom Lonergan, he’s a key defender. Suffice it to say he didn’t have many opportunities to serve his purpose in this game!
Yeah I was a little harsh on the lad haha
Only Wojcinski, Enright and Garland beat him for one-percenters that day so he still found a way to get involved.
@@thegaz-man Also, to be fair to the man, he did get his kidney taken out after it was injured in a game of footy that nearly forced him to retire early. He very easily could have not played another game past 2007
The difference between the Smashing that Melbourne got in 2011 against Geelong compared to the Smashing that Brisbane Bears got in 1992 against Geelong.
Back in 1992, Brisbane Bears were already a struggling club that only started to work out their way but a loss like that was something they were used to. Melbourne on the other hand thought they were on the rebuild until that day happened.
That's a really good point you make - the Bears were post-Skase, floating around with no identity.
The Demons loss stripped any and all prestige the oldest club in the country had away from it, and set it back ten years.
Without this loss though, does the 2021 Premiership happen?
Colin Sylvia also sadly died in 2018. It was a tragic time for the Demons in so many ways.
Can't remember if I mentioned him in my Demons series but that definitely hurt.
Had a really underrated peak at the Dees during their darkest hours.
Anyone else here after Sydney wins by 171 over West coast?
Yes
As a dees fan this was the worst day of my life. The prelim 2021 was sweet revenge.
It was really good to see they could turn it around. If you haven't seen it, I've got a three-part series on my channel devoted to Melbourne's renaissance, called The Demonic Ritual.
Would love to know your thoughts as a Dees fan!
Informative and terrifying
Remember that goal like it was yesterday.
Boys against men that day for sure!
Really awesome video even thought I am a Dees supporter. :-) I’ll check out your other ones.
Great video, but it's pronounced Cor-eye-OH, not Corry-oh :P
the run of the last 15 years really got going - tho it had started with winning the vfl cup in 2002 - with a massacre against Richmond in rd 5 2007 - finished that year with Geelong beating Port Adelaide - forget the margin - was it 30 or 130!!!! ha ha ha ha
I'm hoping to make a video on that Richmond game, absolutely marked the start of the Cat empire
Oh wow I never knew the scoreboard operator changed their name to Casey! Imagine if that happened these days?
It was top tier banter, sadly I don't think we'll ever see that sort of thing again. They changed it back before the halfway mark of Q2, I think.
Eagles 2022 make the 2011 Demons look good.
True, at least the 2011 Dees were finals contenders!
Sydney 171 point trashing against west coast and Ports 105 point first half against Hawks is up there with the all times
I'll touch on the Sydney game in an upcoming vid on the Eagles.
I haven't really explored that Port game - was that 2005-ish?
@@thegaz-man The port game was mid way through this year. It was the highest half time score in general since 2011, and the highest in club history. They were leading by 82 points at Half Time. Except the hawks pulled away after half time scoring 46( *PA* ), to ( *Hawth* ) in the second half. Probability one of the most entertaining games I’ve watched. Final score was 151-96 port won.
Wow, how did I miss that? Gonna have to go back and watch that
I love how he pronounces Corio! It’s K-ri-o not K-oreo! 🤣
Good old Joel Corey-o Bay haha
I'm covering Prahan for an upcoming series and that pronunciation has me terrified 😂😂
UP THE FUCKEN CATTAS! they thought we where over when Ablett left
For sure! Especially with a new coach coming on board that year.
Was it Duncan who came in that year and shored the hole in the engine room?
Sydney just demolished WCE. What's that's games Nick name
Not sure yet, but I'll definitely be making a video on the Eagles' 2023 season
@@thegaz-man Here is a good one. The Swan River Massacre
are you a fan of Jon Bois? seeing some elements of his work here.
Yeah, big time. Reckon I've watched every Pretty Good video about 10 times 😂😂
A bit of credit to AFL Tables, if you don't mind!
Yeah apologies for not crediting them enough!
Definitely one of my favourite places on the internet
Chris and/or Brad Scott 😆😆
What were Mackie's other 2 flags? As far as I know the only AFL level ones he would've won would be '07, '09, and '11.
I added his pre season cup wins. He's one of my favourites and he's well underrated so I wanted him to look a little bit better.
@@thegaz-man oh ok. Same, underrated as hell. One of the Cats greats. I wasnt trying to call you out, just wondering if it was in VFL, NAB league, WAFL, etc.
We’ll look at them in 2021 I mean they got way better
And how! I've actually done a follow-up series on their rise from this game to a Premiership, feel free to check it out
What on earth? Chris and/or Brad Scott? It is Chris Scott… Brad has never been the coach of Geelong!!
One of my running jokes is that they're the same person or interchangeable, mainly bc I always used to mix them up anyway
@@thegaz-man ok… except that new people to the channel don’t know this, and it can make you sound like this is AI built.
Stop reading here if you don’t want some feedback-
I actually listened hard to the voice because of this, and considered carefully as to if this was an AI built channel. If it was I would never watch it again. Luckily I realised it was not a computer making this… as a vlogger who is in the beginning of my journey of vlogging (only 2k subs) I will not watch AI stuff… but I am wondering how many also feel the same way.
“In Jokes” need to be really obvious or not in at all.
Warm regards
Who has the most losses in grand finals?
In total? Collingwood with 27, almost double Essendon's 14
Win rate wise, GWS and Freo lost their only GFs, with St Kilda at 18%
Jones never broke the record 😢
Honestly I think I cursed him
Such a shame, he deserved to get that record
funny how jones never hit that milestone haha, up the cattas!!!!
Great video, but please learn how to pronounce corio.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed! Yeah, I've changed the pronunciation for the Demons series, tempted to do a reupload for this one.
@@thegaz-man perhaps the 2007 smashing against Richmond? It definitely seemed to have set up the 3 premiership wins
One of the great wins, for sure. Might take me a while but I'd be keen to cover that at some point!
this is hard to watch- dees fan
I've got a video coming soon on the 2021 flag so that'll hopefully make up for it haha
@@thegaz-man thank you it will
