  • You know where you are with a sequel: it's like the first game but there are new weapons, new baddies and there's a number at the end of it. Except sometimes instead of that the next game lurches into a whole other genre to produce a sequel so radically different you have to squint to see the family resemblance. Have a squint at these and subscribe for a video like this weekly from Outside Xbox: www.tinyurl.com/SubToOxbox
    Compare and contrast Syndicate (1993) and Syndicate (2012) in the video above, along with with Dune and Dune 2, Pac-Man and Pac-Man 2, Toejam and Earl and Toejam and Earl 2, and other sequels that flipped the script so hard it broke.

    Remember Jak & Daxter, that early noughties platformer about the mute boy and his wisecracking animal sidekick
    Now remember Jak 2 when that same mute boy started talking, got angry all the time and blasted monsters with a shotgun and collected their scalps to learn more dark powers

      His dad went from a proud Spartan leader to a bubbling old dude who's easily impressed in three cutscenes

      Jak is Mar except he isn't to be explored never, here's some car racing
      Jak's love interest was switched to appease a horny minority because she wasn't sexy enough despite INVENTING A TIME MACHINE THAT WORKS
      And the reveal was so bad, not to mention Vegar shows up as the big bad outta NOWHERE
      And yes, his uncle from the first game, we won't forget ND

      @@falconeshield As a hardcore fan of the series I agree on most of these points, on the Jak/Mar thing, it isn’t a wholly open and shut case, because there is still some debate on whether Jak was THE mar and the lore there goes really deep. Feel free to watch some videos on it or I’ll edit one in later since I can’t remember the name.
      On the whole Keira and Ashelin thing, Keira was slated for that, but a change in VA from the original I think Anna Garduño to Tara Strong practically made Keira a mute in 3.
      About Veger being the big bad, if you mean his introduction into the series as a whole I agree, but in terms of story it was pretty obvious he was gonna be a big bad. Cyber Errol detracted from him a bit but I still pretty much knew he’d be a dick head. I’m just disappointed he didn’t go down in a blaze like Errol did.

    For me the first thing that pops into mind is the Jak and Daxter series. It went from a game where you had to collect everything and could do anything in whatever order with snarky lines when you died to a game where you shoot things, collect the equivalent of a heart from your slain enemies' corpses, and turn into a ruthless killing machine with knives for finger nails all so you can murder the person who turned you into a killing machine and overthrow an oppressive dictator.

    The first series I thought of was Jak and Daxter vs Jak II. One has a silent protagonist trying to stop bad guys and help his best friend who was turned into a small animal. The other takes place in a dystopian future where the protagonist has dark powers (after being tortured for years) and also a gun.

    The first two Fallout games were role playing games in a third person perspective with rpg style combat sequences, but when Fallout 3 was released under Bethesda Game Studios a number of changes were made such as the game being in a first person perspective and it's turn based combat system being discarded in favor of attacking enemies more than once at any given time and unlike the original games which were set in California the third game was set in the American capital of Washington D.C.

    You know, I was talking about it with friends: The best example I can point out of this event is the persona series.
    Persona 1 and 2 were very different from the later entries, with 3 being the brave new guy. The first two were more akin to tactical isometric games, with a fairly thin story that happened over the course of a single day (as far as I remember.) Oh, did I mention how persona 3 added *the entire social half of the series*? Should point that out. Not to mention a larger emphasis on the physiological aspects of the series, namely, the namesake, personas.

    • @harishramachandra1746
      @harishramachandra1746 Год назад

      It honestly sounds like you read a secondhand description of persona 1 and 2 instead of playing them. Persona 1 does have a thin story but calling the story of the Persona 2 duology thin is completely wrong. Also those games were not tactical at all, they were very much jrpgs with many typical jrpg aspects of them being abandoned by P3 such as pre made dungeons, controllable party members, skill cards, etc until later persona titles.

    • @harishramachandra1746
      @harishramachandra1746 Год назад

      Persona 1 might take place in a day but the persona 2 duology takes place over the course of a few weeks if not a month when the events of both games are combined together. Your comment on psychology focus is wrong too, persona 1 focuses on the psychology of its main villain and the main heroine while the Persona 2 duology had a big focus on the minds and mental states of it's entire cast, including the villains as well as the silent protagonist.

    • @harishramachandra1746
      @harishramachandra1746 Год назад

      Apologies if all that sounded condescending but nobody plays persona 1 and 2 as it is, spreading misinformation like that just makes it worse

    • @stevenn1940
      @stevenn1940 Год назад

      @@harishramachandra1746 I'm sorry I got some very minor details wrong in my comment. You're right, I should have said 'a small fraction of the timescale of the later entries of the series,' since one month over the course of two games is... still a tiny amount of time.
      And I said 'a larger emphasis... namely, personas'
      In the first games, iirc, they were literally demons like in SMT, nor did the first games go nearly as deep as later games into the phsycology and problems of the cast, which was the main focus of the latter games at points. I did not say the earlier games did not focus on it, but they did not place nearly as much emphasis nor time for devlopment for these aspects as later games

      Not an excuse. Take MGR: the fans hated it before release because it was a spin off *without* the mechanics that were part of the main series. It releases, some fans give it a chance, they actually enjoy it and spread the word, more people buy it and it becomes a success, with its problems, still, but a great spin off.
      Survive, on the other hand... Caving for classic gameplay when *it is just in the slightest* and TEDIOUS, horrible story and... Lazyness. It was just a cash grab, everyone knew it. Look up the ratings on Steam and Metacritic, not just the score, but the comments as well.
      Rising: janky and simpler story, but still felt like a DAMN Metal Gear game. New gameplay is excellent, Platinum is not just a name, it's a *Pedigree in hack 'n' slash*.
      Survive: looks like a Metal Gear, but changes drastically, it's slow paced and empty. What's the point of having an open world to explore if it is empty?! Or always the same encounter?!! Story is messed up in a bad way and continuity is as well (really, a MG Ray coming from a Portal? Fanservice much?). At least they said it's not canon, yaaaaay...

      The thing that worries me is that since Lionhead is gone, they're handing the reins over to a company that has previously only done the Forza racing games. I'm not saying they can't do Fable... It turns out that Jack of Blades was only one of (and perhaps the weakest) a family of void borne terrors... One of the original heroes of Albion ended up defeating them all, fighting the Queen of Blades one v one over the course of weeks, carving valleys and rivers in the land, if memory serves. THAT could be an epic final battle.

    The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. Although they're the same game at basic structure, their style of story are as different between the SNES graphics and the Switch graphics

      Timmy Teaches not really though. A sequel follows the main story line while a spin off takes an idea from the original and makes it into its own thing, branching away from the main story to tell something that's not really important to understand the main story . For a great example from tv: Vampire diaries was okay but the originals was great
      The originals is the spin off and vampire diaries is the original.

    • @timmyteaches7663

    I would mention Dino Crisis 3. At the end of 2, i was so hyped thinking how I would continue the story of regina, shooting dinos, studying time travel and coming back to save dylan somehow. Then Dino Crisis 3 came around, and it was... on space. For some reason. Also Regina and Dylan were completely forgotten.

    I submit for your review Quake 2. The first Quake game was more or less a remake of DOOM, with better technology. Teleportation, check. Demons, check.
    Enter Quake 2, vaguely inspired by Heinlein's Starship Trooper. Barely any teleportation, and cyborgs instead of demons.

      Patrik Hjorth actually, fun fact, quake was supposed to be a 3d rpg with medieval weapons like swords. But when one of the partners at Id left, they made it into a 3d shooter, reskining the original weapons.

      Thematically the entire Quake series is a little weird. The first game was all dark and Trent Reznor-y, the second was about the war against the Strogg, the third was a strictly arena shooter with no real story outside of "kill the other guy," and the fourth went back to the war against the Strogg suddenly.

    One of the few examples of two games from a series being entirely different genres, yet both being great. Hell, I even played the first game on my PC a few weeks ago just for nostalgias sake.

    How about Final Fantasy? Which one you ask? I don't know, pick one. You got FF10 to 11, one being a fairly traditional turn based RPG, the other being an mmo, a trick they tried a second with 13 to 14. And that's not even mentioning 15 which is an action JRPG.

      The Final Fantasy series is something else - it seems Squaresoft (and then Square Enix) were always trying to innovate with something at every turn. From FF II's weird leveling system to FF III's introduction of jobs to FF IV's heavy emphasis on story (even more than FF II) and so on. Even FF IX had the system where you could jump between different characters to see what was happening with them at that moment (something weirdly similar to what Wild Arms did).
