  • Shootout liberating Chickie from the Fathers in Episode 3. The background music is the unforgettable House of the Rising Sun, by The Animals. Unbelievably cool choice of music in a miniseries that did all the right things with the soundtrack.

Totally agree. "House of the Rising Sun" has been used in a number of movies and TV shows, but I always remember the anguished cry of "Chickie!" whenever I hear this song.

I watched this miniseries when it came out and I'd forgotten almost everything about it except for this scene, until I watched it again.

For some reason, even all these years later, this sequence with it's use of this song, is very clear in my mind.

Cut to Robert Morse singing a Shatner-esque rendition of "All Along the Watchtower."

I think Eli Levitt was laughing because Chickie's last words, "I hear a symphony", belong in the same universe and time period of old 60's tunes. Diana Ross sang "I hear a symphony" with her fellow Detroit "motown" musicians known as "The Supremes" in 1966. Considering how the characters in Wild Palms seem to relish and idolize the American pop-culture 1960's with their cars and choices of music (except for Tony Kreutzer, whose tastes go back in time a bit), I think Eli Levitt was laughing at Chickie's choice of last words reflecting lyrics by The Supremes. In a way, the words "I hear a symphony" are considered significant by many fans of Diana Ross for a special reason: Diana Ross suffered from some mental difficulties for a period of her life, that some might call schizophrenia, and it has been noted that sometimes schizophrenics hear symphonic music "coming from heaven". Also notice how Chickie asks, "is this real?" also leading into the same kind of mind-state: that Chickie himself was suffering something similar to schizophrenia due to the mimezine and torture. So I think Eli Levitt was laughing because it was such a brilliant, genius thing for Chickie to come up with to say as his last words, almost like a culturally cognizant joke despite being so incognizant. He was laughing because Chickie was such a genius even as he was dying.

This series deals a lot with scientology. As for the soundtrack, compare the Wild Palms-theme with the composition Clouds (Nuages) by french composer Claude Debussy. You´ll be astonished...

Amazing discovery. It inspired R. Sakamoto but sounds very close though.

Exactly. It's a mix of sci-fi and soap opera.

Remember that line in the show when the reporter says to Grace's mother, "There are pictures of you committing the crime!"
And she simply says sacarcastically, "Please." That was pretty amazing prediction back then, as pictures couldn't be so easily faked. Now you have people who can fake all kinds of things in their basement using cheap programs.
Anyone know when Church Windows is on?

We ordered it off of Ebay awhile back. Nice professional 2 disc copy, still in the wrapper. :-D
Great film. Back from before Oliver Stone sold out. (Assuming of course he wasn't always sold out.)
