Meet One of Australia’s Most Notorious Underworld Enforcers

  • For almost 30 years notorious gangster Graham 'Abo' Henry and his partner Neddy Smith ruled the mean streets of Sydney, Australia's crime capital, with iron fists. They went head-to-head with other gangs, crooked cops, unsuspecting civilians, and finally each other, all with the endorsement of Australia’s most infamous bent cop, Roger Rogerson.
With violence, bloodshed and fear as his tools of trade, Abo Henry carved a swathe through the criminal underworld, raking in millions, and living by his own code of honor; one of looking after your mates, and never, ever rolling on them. His criminal career came to an end on what is known as Sydney’s deadliest pub crawl, which culminated in Henry stabbing police prosecutor Mal Spence in the stomach and the neck.

Yeah, we are a bit. Partly due to our convict beginnings. But I'll say this: In my day at least, nobody got shot or stabbed. You handled it with fists and that was it. I had a mate who was the best street fighter in Western Sydney. These days some punk would shoot him. (I live in the States now and the guns situation just makes knuckling null and void.) We weren't angels, but nobody was out to kill anybody else. Now there's a lot of drugs and street gangs. Real fuckin noddies. Bloody rapists and bashers. One of them I know of got sent to prison and still kept mouthing off, and one of the wardens went in his cell and belted him thoroughly. Without his gang and his weapons, he was weak as piss. He stopped mouthing off. Alright, enough stories from the old days. haha :-)

Sydney was a tough place in those days. All those blokes he was talking about could fight and they could shoot. The mafia -- i think from Cleveland -- literally refused to go into business with the Sydney big shot because they thought they were lunatics. Chris Flannery (Mr. Rentakill) who Abo was talking about, got knocked off because he was mad and just a loose cannon. Crooks like to keep things quiet. It's sort of an open secret who whacked him. My memory's not so good anymore but I think his name was Stan Smith (not Neddy Smith, who abo mentioned). Not sure if they dumped Flannery out in the drink somewhere. They did that a lot. Fed em to the sharks. They were cool with civilians and just kept it among themselves. To them it was about money and the violence was a tool. They didn't want anybody being a cowboy. And the most frightening bloke of all was a cop -- Roger Rogerson. He's an old man now and finally went to prison for murder a few kids when he and a mate killed this kid they stole drug from or something like that. He once shot a drug dealer dead, when he was under no threat, in front of a dozen cops in a city street in broad daylight and it went down as self-defense. Nobody fucked with him. He gave the orders. He turned out to be an evil bastard, but when he was young he was a highly decorated cop because he'd get stuck into anything. No fear in him. Anyway, a lot of interesting tales but not blokes to be admired at all.

He and his mate Neddy (6'5, best street fighter in Sydney), would sit in opposition pubs, pick fights on the basis of of taking on all patrons at once, then leave the PUB having thrashed all and sundry. The 2 of them together were unbeaten over many years, no matter what the number of the opposition was. There's a few OMG's that learnt not to mess with them. A tow truck driver got the better of Neddy in a brawl in Coogee many years later, Neddy knew he was about to be beaten, so he stabbed him to death with a crowd watching on.

We need new Graham 'Abo' Henry 's in Melbourne Australia who would sort out our current problem. From a decade of the most liveable city in the world, African refugee gangs are the cause for our drop-in status. Police try, but hampered when an offender is given bail, then does same crime and is bailed again. My friends and family are in the police force and are very frustrated. Our politicians will not change the current laws, which even frustrate Magistrates. In summer, I'd leave windows open. Now I have surveillance cameras, $500- in an old wallet with old credit cards. It is bait so I won't get hurt. My top storey triggers an alarm when below there is movement. The house has well-hidden weapons in need.
