    It's now tougher than ever to be a bikie in Australia.
    In 2013 Campbell Newman, premier of the state of Queensland, declared that 26 motorcycle clubs were to be classified criminal organisations. He then announced "the toughest laws in the nation," a set of strict anti-association laws aimed at snuffing out bikie gangs altogether.
    The new laws prohibited club members from meeting in groups larger than two, barred them from certain jobs, and forced anyone on a Harley to prove they weren't a part of a criminal gang. This has made life difficult for all riders, and just about impossible for club members. It also drove an upswing of arrests for both.
    So are the laws working? And more importantly, do they make sense? We hung out with the president of Queensland's largest outlaw club, the Rebels, to see for ourselves.

    Australia, that bans music, movies, and video games, banning bike clubs is not something I wouldn't expect from them. This is a country that thinks putting wider tires on your car is dangerous and bans that as well. It's the ultimate nanny state.

    Got a lot of foreigners commenting about the situation down here in oz allegation of a nanny state etc. My problem with this vice short is that it is incredibly one sided showing the old mates who like to have a few brews after an arvo on the bikes but neglecting to show younger criminal underbelly of a motorcycle clubs. 1% of violent crime is committed by bike gangs which is huge when you factor in the per capita comparison furthermore looking at the scope of violent crime in Australia which is much broader than countries like America. They neglect to show the meth problem which we are currently having here in Oz which bikes play a key roll in (production, muscle, protection and supply) but also civil unrest in our communities gun murders and drive by shootings. I wish they showed the other side but as usual vice have an agenda and they want you to agree with them

    it's pretty typical of Australia or even New Zealand to make ridiculous "nanny state" laws about things that intimidate the general public. Gun laws and biker gangs being two. Australians are being persecuted for what they look like. So if three guys were wearing leather vests with patches in a restaurant sitting at the same table I suppose they're breaking the law.

    • @mwps99

    • @Cheeseoverdose
      @Cheeseoverdose 10 лет назад +9

      I disagree. it's extremely difficult or impossible to own a handgun, suppressors are legal but flash hiders are not, no magazines over seven rounds, no pistol grips on rifles, no concealed carry, no full autos whatsoever (not even any licensing provision for such). You have to go through a stupid wilderness survival course to get the simplest gun license even if you don't hunt and only target shoot. It's complicated, bureaucratic bullshit that just makes it inconvenient for everyday, law abiding people people to own guns, but the gangs and criminals still manage to get them because they don't care about the law.

    • @mwps99
      @mwps99 10 лет назад +3

      @DopamineDreams The expression “1%”, “1%er” or “1 percenter” was coined when the AMA (American Motorcycle Association) was said to make a statement in response to the 1947 Hollister Riot in Hollister, California which stated that 99% of motorcycle riders are law-abiding citizens. Not long after the comment was made by the American Motorcycle Association the clubs of the time stated that they were the other 1%. [1]
      Basically anybody that claims to be a 1%er is declaring themselves to be part of a criminal biker club. The bikies starting claiming that they were really law abiding citizens when the government started cracking down on them, despite declaring themselves criminals for half a century.

      @@angiebowman3193 well in america 1% ers are fully patched members of a outlaw bike club so mongol hells angels banditos ect. Meaning they are 100% on the wrong side of the law full initiation requires multiple mission culminating in a big one by the time you earn that 1% patch your straight up felon many times over most people end up in jail a few times to patch in bike gangs cant patch in in prison the prison gangs font allow it and no bikes so their own rules dont apply leaving many to join gangs for saftey so youll often find most 1% bikers having done time tend to be members of matching race afiliated gangs in prison so ab mm sur 13 ect

    All I know is it got pretty bad in Sydney at one stage and the law had to step in because even my nice neighbourhood was having shootings and home invasions, which to be fair law abiding citizens weren’t targeted and largely were due to internal struggles, but when houses are getting shot up it’s only a matter of time before innocent bystanders get hurt or killed.
    I realise there are many bikies that are decent people and are just a little rough around the edges but to act like they are totally innocent is bullshit when many make their money from crime and use the club to standover people.

    QLD laws like this affect Bikies atm but, this is only the tip of the iceberg. imagine if these laws were placed against - religious groups, teen-agers, homosexuals, homeless people. Sure, there are bad eggs in Bikie groups, but that's like any group of people n imo, this is just the start of more controlling methods the government wants to have over Australian human rights.

    • @JohnPedder
      @JohnPedder 10 лет назад +3

      fugehdehyou you understood the small picture but didn't understand the bigger picture. 2013 - laws n legistlation against ALL bikie groups to control / minimalise bikie activity. 2 years pass, more laws against bikies pass which are to do with bikies activities online. these laws affect ALL online groups. real life groups protest. the same laws that were used against the bikies are put in place against protesters. the same laws that were put in place against the protesters, affects any group of kids and adults from any background (heritage), group (friends, fitness people, church group). I'm using extremes here but I'm sure you can generally see what i'm saying - these laws n legislation have 'good' intention :D control n limit rights is the basis of what has happened, n this affects the bikies directly but don't be naive to believe that you won't be directly affected by an extension of these very laws in the future.

    As a Queensland-er I have just been harassed and abused by all the new police power the state Gov has been given. First I was pulled over and forgot that my license had run out of expiry date 2 weeks earlier so due to the new hoon laws I was arrested, had to go to court, fined $600 and my car impounded for 7 days. 2nd was that the arresting police officer on the night decided he could smell pot on me (which was load of crap because I haven't smoked pot for about 3 years) so then searched my car and I for drugs (they obviously found nothing). Then to top it all of they sent a drug squad to my house on the new laws of only needing suspicion to have a full search warrant. The drug squad even knew that clearly I was not a drug dealer and so were laughing and joking that the next thing they will try and charge me for is the new bikie laws. I must leave this shit hole state, fuck it, the entire shit hole of a country. if the police don't lock me up for nothing im so moving to New Zealand

Also some bloody context would be nice VICE!, you make it look like the blues are crushing people, but if you look a bit more, you would relies that there was a serious bikie problem with drug distribution and gun violence all connected with bikie gangs in Queensland, but now because of these laws, lots of innocent peoples who would of been caught inbetween shootings, brawls and violence have now been saved. Just my point, but im getting tired of vices biased view, they claim they want to see both sides, but they aim instantly on one side which defeats their entire aim in these documentaries. .
