- Gear for Bike Touring has changed a lot in the past few years, so I thought it was time to create a new bikepacking gear guide for 2020. This will help you choose the right bike for touring as well as the essential gear to help you have the best experience while out on your next long distance adventure.
All gear was from Topeak, except the bike and camping gear.

Looks more like an advert for Topeak
Especially with that smile going on all the time, LOL :P
It's fake
Finally someone says that a MTB it’s ok for bikepacking... 🥳
It's what I ride
It can handle all kinds of conditions so why not? I took mine to the UK. It did great
MTB for life!
I have done nearly 5000 Kms on mine in last two years full touring and bike packing
Man, that's a pretty damn sexy setup Brian! Definitely made me excited for the spring/summer and getting back in the saddle!
Dude! When are you coming for a ride? Have you done any bikepacking?
“Every gram counts” yet you choose a mountain bike. Gravel bikes make good touring bikes because they accommodate tires up to 45cm and weigh only 21lbs.
I scrolled down to comment the Same. Satisfied to find it as the top comment;)
What happens when you want to get off on a rocky, sandy trail? Gravel bikes are real road bikes with wider tires. To limited.
This video is awsome its refreshing to see a RUclipsr with a calm voice
thanks
Excellent information - thankyou. My friend has a very expensive Jones with really wide tyres, and I've been thinking of upgrading my ancient 26” mountain bike. But you've convinced me I don't need to. (but if I ever do, I'll get a 29er)
Glad to be of help. One of my best biking buddies still rides a 26", and as far as i can see...he has just as much fun as me.
5% of terrain where you want a MTB means 95% terrain where something else is equally suited or better. Gravelbikes are better on road and hardpacked surfaces while still capable enough for some light single trail. That makes them a great choice for many riders. Also the geometry is different what makes one feel different which makes all the difference for some people. I just recently sat on a modern MTB for the first time and felt like riding a chopper. That felt weird to me. On a gravel you much more feel like on a 90s MTB, what they essentially are and is what I'm used to. Tyre size and handle bar width can be adjusted. I'm in for a gravel next season.
I agree on gravel bikes. If I'm going for a couple hour ride consisting of only really technical single track I'd choose my mountain bike but any mixed terrain ride of moderate to long distance is way more fun and a lot more comfortable to me on my gravel bike. I'm 56 years old and have ridden bikes of all types my whole life. Gravel bikes are the most fun I've ever had on a bicycle. If I could only own one bike there's no question I'd choose gravel.
while there is truth in what you are saying...most people don't know what the trail will look like before riding it. So knowing you can ride anywhere is a great feeling.
I have felt comfortable on every ride on my gravel bike. Much more comfortable than my hardtail. Gravel bike is 10 pounds lighter so will always use for bikepacking.
Gravel bike all the way. I have a suspension stem installed on my gravel bike. Best setup for me.
@@TheTravelVlogger so I live in the Netherlands, you still recommend a mountain bike?
Very useful and informative. Thanks.
You are welcome!
Thanks. This is so helpful and I say it after checking youtube for days already :-)
Glad it was helpful!
super video !!!
I agree with you 100% on the hard tail mountain bike. Don’t waste your money 💰 and use what you already own. Good advise on saving cash 💵!!
tried and true...hard tail mountain bike can do it all!
I just use a rear rack with panniers on my MTB (had to drill holes in the frame for the rear rack), and i think that system is very simple to use, and much better than the limited space of those smaller packs. I can fit pretty much all my "essential gear" (for an overnight trip) in just one of my paniers, which gives me PLENTY of extra space for food and other items that i would need for a month long trip (like solar panels, extra clothes, a system for washing my clothes, etc).
If your goal is to get from point a to point b in a limited time frame, then maybe smaller more aerodynamic packs filled with only the essential ultralight gear is the best choice. I of course prefer ultralight gear, but for bikepacking it mostly just means that i can bring some extra items...
totally agree...just depends on how you like to travel.
Yes, i did subscribe. Thank you for all the suggestions. What do you think about touring america for a year on an aluminium bike vs a steel bike?
Thanks! I think it is a great idea. Aluminum will be lighter and should be stronger. So if your budget allows for it I would go Aluminum.
A Surly Troll is a good option. Steel frames absorb bumps better and are sturdier. You can add very large tires with tread of your desire. There is no front shock to create unnecessary problems. They have more gearing and those sport hardtail do not have more than one front cog. Unless yoi are doing a quick overnight, or all off road.. this hardtail is not a great option.
Could you list tool kit that you need to bring with your trip for emergency case? Thanks
english is not my original language. but your speaking so good and understandable.
thanks
THANK YOU 🙏🏻
You're so welcome!
How do you combine the toploader and midloader? One of the straps can't go around the top tube, do you just attach it to the midloader? The new midloader has a better design with three loops instead of these two long ones. I bought the complete topeak kit a few years ago when there was nothing else on the market in my region. But not sure if I would stick with it, the midloader and backloader are fine, the backloader does tend to sway side to side but my biggest gripes are the frontloader which sags and leans to one side and the toploader, which also can't stay upright and rubs on my knees when I'm out of the saddle.
Their are canvas loops on the strap of the midloader that you can feed the strap of the the top loader through. The backloader can sway a lot if you don't have the straps tied down tight or if you but too much stuff in it.
Nice vlog 👌
thanks!
Nice information,,,,,
thanks!
Question: How did you mount your versacages to your forks?
the versacage comes with some re-usable heavy duty ziptie thingys. 3 for each cage.
subscribed and liked :)
Same 🤙🏻
Honestly if you have a road bike with wide enough tires they work great
how wide? I am actually doing a lot more research into road bikes/gravel bikes
Road and gravel bikes are not “punishing” if you set them uo and ride them properlyon any surfaces. Bike handling skills help with that. N😌. And certainly no more punishing than long grinding mileage on a mountain bike. 😬
Fair enough!
Do you have suggestions for long distance bike trails? Would like to avoid vehicles.
i just heard about this super long one that called the trans-Balkan. It goes through all the ex-Yugoslovia countries. Colorado trail is 500 miles i think. Let me know if you find any good ones
I dont believe that overly agressive weight watching in bikepacking is that important. As per grams really? Take a dump and shave your hair, theres already a kilo 😄
hahahahaha! pretty funny.
Great video, but sorry man! What kind of panniers do you have? You show the Ortlieb Rollers and you talk about: they get loose, you have to fix them, difficult to get inside, do not fit on cargo racks ... sorry, you should have skipped that comment, because its just false !!! The get easier on and off the bike then the Topeak, are 100% waterproof and hold for decades. The bikepacking bags have different advantages and I amit that, but please .....
Thanks! it all depends on how you like to bike tour. panniers on front and back can allow you to take a lot more gear, but i prefer to take less gear. I biked across the czech republic with panniers and i didn't like the way the bike was balanced. Also not all panniers work on every rack...which causes them to get unclipped and then you have the bags slamming into the frame.
Ortlieb panniers allow you to take more and are durable and fully waterproof. Not for posers but they work, even off-road. Maybe a bit more weight but add way more comfort and as been mentioned they do not need to be adjusted all the time and go on and off quickly......not topeak, though!
nice topeak ad
No ad, just my honest opinion.
I am using a wetbah for my sleeping bag strapped to my fork, pillow and thermarest to the back of the seat tent in the middle all attached with bungees food in a handle bar pouch for $10 bucks and a top tube bag for others everything else in my camelbak
i want to see this video.
Since you say MTBs are best suited for touring, what is your take on hybrids? Currently, I tour on a folding bicycle and am pretty comfortable with her, but yeah, when I encounter bad roads, it does get me alarmed😱
You are a warrior my friend. Touring on a folding bike has to be difficult as most of them have small tires. Hybrids are a good mix, but not sure how much more comfortable it would be. Bigger tires will have you going over rocks and branches easier. MTB with thicker tires will make bumps even more comfortable. Safe Travels.
@@TheTravelVlogger Gee, thanks for the nice words. Tell you what, touring on a folding bike is no sweat at all. In fact, I find it rather versatile: should you run out of juice, you can always fold up and catch a bus😉
@@neeleshkushte6023 I think you still have option to put it in front of the BUS if you do not have a folding bike.
👍
Use whatever bike you want, as long as it's a hard tail mountain bike 🤣
you 've got magnificent eyes mate!
Thank you kindly!
I didn't know Topeak make so many useful accessories. Topeak is a reliable brand, I have few things of it. Thanks for this informative video!
They have some excellent gear, super reliable.
Hi there, great video! Your content is very interesting! Let's get in touch, and maybe collaborate!
Professor Brian cox looks different on RUclips than he does on bbc 😳
You must be from the UK, cause i hear this all the time from my UK friends.
wrong advice!! the bike you already own may not work...what if the only bike I have can only clear a 28mm tire?
technically you bike tour with any functioning bike
Title should be ‹Best TOPEAK Bikepacking Gear 2020›!
you're a softspoken guy like me..
You can't tell the difference between a road and a gravel bike yet you think you can give advice on what the best bike is for bike packing.
Only give your limited advice for mount bikes.
thanks for the engagement :)
@@TheTravelVlogger in fairness he's right, you contradicted yourself several times in the video
Pure Topeak Promo Video. Lol. Every gram counts and you choose 386g bags instead of 250g or less bikepacking bags... Topeak Topeak Topeak. I've seen enough, thx...
Did you ever USE those bags?! They fall apart (zippers etc.) after 2-3 rides!!!
I have used several of the bags many times and have had no issues with zipper problems.
Warning; advertisement
Lol
Misleading title
because?
Long winded self absorbed, couldn’t b bothered with it 10mins no products, the world has a short attention span...now I won’t waste anymore time
how long would you like it to be?
I want my 23 minutes back. This is poorly put together, full of rambling, and needless filler content.
I URGE you to take a page from bigger channels and you'll see that most videos of this format are not nearly as long, most are half what yours is.
You need to provide VALUE to your audience, It's not here.
You can't have them! I am keeping them.....mwah hahahahaha
Topeak is onr of the worst brand those bags are ok for kids.. sorry not one peace of gear in your list i would ever buy ...
I have used my topeak equipment on several bikepacking trips (+3000km) and have had zero issues. I like the equipment. It is not cheap but it is high quality and very functional.
Your delivery is too slow. Sorry. Bye
thanks for the engagement
Too many ads on your video. Unfortunately, I can't watch this.
Sorry to hear that
