It didn't get completely banned. Some music video channels still showed it with parts of the video cut out. It was number 1 in the UK & made the top 10 in a lot of countries. The video played a huge part in that, so I would say the hard work paid off in the end.
When I saw the music video for the first and he started ripping off his skin I was "hmm okayyyyy", I wasn't too cringed, I had no idea it'd escalate that quick.

When I was a child, I only saw the censored version on MTV. When I saw this on MCM (a French music channel), I was scared seeing the skinless Robbie Williams in the uncensored version.

I remember see this making off on TV many years ago, it was a half hour program. What was really funny was at the end they showed Robbie at the pub in his meat outfit and then he went outside and he was running down the street in the middle of the night yelling "taxi, taxi" :-)

So, he ripped his skin off, and that worked. The whole idea for the video was from some French guy who created a lot of music videos, not that he worked on the actual filming. I remember there being some drawings he had done on how the scene should play out.
This video was fantastic, it called out on the media and what people were willing to do just to be desired and to get the attention of people. Kinda like twitch streamers and the news.
I was never traumatised by the video..i just found it great,well executed and kind of symbolic of what happens all the time...guys tryjng to impress girls , attract their attention, ready to do anything, and girls hard to impress, for good reason sometime. The extremes people are willing to go thru. No ugly or chubby girls there, tho...
