Could Modern F1 Handle Magny Cours?

- In my 'Can F1 Handle...' series, I take modern F1 cars to classic or never used tracks to see what they'd be like, and see if F1 could return or use an existing track instead of building new ones.
One I've thought about recently is Magny Cours, the old home of the French Grand Prix, which has since been replaced by Paul Ricard. How will a modern car cope with the quick changes of direction required here?

It’s to make sure you’re paying attention. Honest. Made up for it with the Google Earth thing tho. That’s cool.
It has? I know it has to hold a high one because WSB and the World Endurance motocycle races are held there, and a track should, in theory, be safer for one which has a lot of very high-speed bike racing on it than one which is just for cars (particularly lower-level cars when it comes to open-wheel, or tin-tops in general). The medical facilities must be of high standards or else WSB wouldn't go there.
I definitely would prefer it over the current borefest. But there are definitely areas of the track which need widening, and the pitlane needs demolishing and rebuilding. As you said, the entry from the pits onto the racing line must also be made safer. You can get more than two, even 4-5 bikes wide down that track in parts, but there are definitely a lot of places where I wouldn't put more than one of today's bikes let alonde F1 cars. However, next year's F1 cars are supposed to be smaller, aren't they? Maybe it would work without expanding too much more of the track beyond the pits and those narrowest of areas? I'm not thinking about the hairpin as much as some other potential overtaking points which would currently require a trip onto the often wet grass to accomplish the job.
Neat run, though. The more I stare at the screen, the more realistic the track looks and the more I find myself swaying as if I was in the car!
Could you do more fly over videos. As a newer f1 go fan I don't really know the ins and outs of tracks. You could do a little slower fly over. Talk about corner names, famous or notable moments on those corners. At the finish you could talk about notible races. You could also discuss the racing line and where drivers might run wide aka track limits. Discuss where to look for passing when watching the races. I think these track history fly overs would make great story times

I always remembered how Magny Cours always had corners named after other F1 tracks, in which case Estoril would be an interesting experiment. From above, Estoril always looked like Catalunya but i always felt it had much more character than its Catalan counterpart (which I HATE btw, as I do Paul Ricard). Also would love to see Jacarepagua or Zolder. Maybe even Dijon.
The thing about the older tracks like magny cors and imola is that they have in my opinion much more personality than most of the newer tilkedroms like Abu Dhabi or Russia. Nothing against tilke however they don’t make them like they used to. I’d really like to see F1 race at magny cors again in the future a long with Istanbul and imola protomao and sepang that would be good. Also as always good video.

Funny how we're now romanticising Magny-Cours when for the longest time it was on the calendar, it was seen as a dull and uninspired track. Although it did give us some good races throughout the years, with 1999 being an obvious favourite.
Yeah. And what is also funny is that in the period there was no French GP, the more common consensus seemed to be bringing it back to Paul Ricard. Quite funny how that has changed.
Honestly, both tracks wouldn't work with current F1 in terms of layout. Both are dirty air hell's at the moment, both also basically only have 1 good overtaking opportunity in current cars (hairpin at Magny Cours, Mistral chicane at Paul Ricard). Gotta see Paul Ricard in 2022, how that goes.

@@mikespearwood3914 Paul Ricard indeed has a lot of layouts. However, considering F1 layout lenghts, they boil down to three modifications that you can make of the layouts that currently exist. Firstly, the first and second corner. You can either have the slow left right we have now, you can have a medium speed left right which probably wouldn't be as good of a overtaking opportunity, or you can take a super fast flat out left right. U think that would kind of be like, sticking two 130R's after each other. What that would cause is definitely the DRS at the S/F straight would have to go, and you could maaaaybe add a tiny one after T1/T2 to Virage but that wouldn't be a long zone at all. So idk if that would be so good.
Second possible modification is the chicane. There's about 5 different layouts of the chicane. Some are quite... Bad, I think two of them look decent, one being the current one and one being a super tight left right, but I think the current one is better honestly as a overtaking opportunity, allows you to go side by side better. You can also just skip the chicane however I doubt that the FIA would be too happy of a DRS zone all the way from Virage to Signes, since Signes is a extremely fast turn, so it probably wouldn't have DRS for the same reason 130R doesn't. Not sure about that though.
Finally, the third possible modification is instead of after Signes having a short straight followed by the double right hander of Double Droit de Beausset, you can absolutely slam on the brakes as soon as you leave Signes and take a extremely tight double right hander to rejoin the track with skipping Beausset. I think this... Probably wouldn't be good either, since you have to slam on the brakes and due to it being just after Signes, you can't poke one up the inside since you can't really brake under turning well. So I wouldn't recommend this.
So all in all? I think there's not really a better layout for F1 currently, no.
Honestly Paul Ricard is a fantastic track in my opinion, it's problem is that F1 cars are dirty air machines and Paul Ricard has a lot of corners that F1 cars generate dirty air on. So that's basically the problem, the cars. Forcefully changing Paul Ricard is a bit unnecessary doing at this moment, let's wait for 2022 first.

The whole time Magny Cours was on the calendar everyone agreed it was boring. I don't know why you'd want to bring it back. Paul Ricard is not a great track either but it's very touch and go which is worse.
Get rid of the chicane on the main straight. I think that would improve PR

I can remember them moving it and some suit said it's not a good venue for fans and a driver said how can a good race track not be good for fans? Look at it now, they race at arse end of nowhere venues that have lower weekend numbers than Friday at Silverstone
If the British GP was held in the North East of England between Newcastle and Berwick, it’d be difficult to get to as the major international airports are London and Manchester. But we have a massive rail network and roads that get you in the general vicinity.
Magny Cours was so far away from Paris, Lile, Lyon, Marseille etc that it was so bad to get to. No rail connections, bad road connections.
Most of these arse end of nowhere tracks at least have a major road going near them.

People MISS Magny-Cours?
When it was still around, all I seemed to hear was "what a boring track, bring pack Paul Ricard".
Of course people do. The French GP was at Magny Cours during the 90s when it was the best time to be a F1 fan. People might call Magny Cours boring but it's still a lot more interesting circuit than the current Tilke circuits.

Why are most of the corners named after the race tracks?
When they redesigned the circuit in '91, they named many of the corners after circuits which had roughly similar-looking bends. I might add that the corners which Nurburgring and Imola resembled don't exist anymore - the Castrol-S at Nurburgring and Variante Bassa at Imola.

Track is nice, f1 is boring.... Should spice it up with something interesting, or if they can't let the engineers do the thinking without banning every new stuff... And should ditch the electric thing
Used to call it "Mangy Cur" at times, but it's a far better track than Paul Ricard that just needs some updating to bring it up to Grade 1
The sad thing is, it holds a grade 1 licence actively
I disagree its better than Paul Ricard, imo Paul Ricard is way better cause it's alot more challenging and has more variety of corner
It's funny, because when they first went to Magny Cours, people were pissed they left Paul Ricard and we're clamoring to go back.
Personally, I wish they had 2 French GPs, heck make it 3 and add the Le Mans short circuit
one thing I'm completely sure about, watching a race at Magny Cours on TV won't be as nauseating experience as watching race at Paul Dick.

If you get a chance you should do this using the '02-'05 Molson Indy Vancouver layout (the one that used the science world parking lot as part of one of the straights) and Canadian Tire Park (Mosport).
And Honda Indy Toronto, it’s like a little weirdly shaped Baku (the way it’s driven and the downforce needed, etc. is similar I mean)

No thanks, if cars already couldn't pass back in the day, I can't imagine what these bigger cars would be like. I love this track on sims and stuff, but god was it awful for F1.
To all the commenters saying the track was shit and there was hardly any overtaking back in the day:
- Mansell overtook Prost in 1991 there two times in one race. Even in 2000 with refuelling and more downforce, Coulthard eventually got by Schumacher on track and not during the stops. In 1999 there was overtaking before the rain came in. You could overtake, it was just harder, which brings me to:
- There was hardly any overtaking during the refuelling era at *most* of the tracks, not just this one. I bet nobody would call 1994-2009 Silverstone shit, but there was hardly any overtaking there too.
- Most of the overtaking these days is thanks to DRS, and Magny-Cours with DRS wouldn't be worse than other tracks on the calendar today.
And finally, even if it has nothing to do with overtaking, one advantage of Magny-Cours for spectators was that, with the exception of the grandstands on the start/finish straight, you could see a lot of the track from any point. With binoculars you could even see nearly all of the action, which is a rare thing. The only other circuit that comes to mind that allows this is Valencia's Ricardo Tormo.
The few exceptions prove the rule. A race at Silverstone without passing is still a race at Silverstone. Most races I've watched concerning certain things being flushed down my toilet have been more interesting than even the best race at Magny Cours.

I find this hilarious, if you’ve been watching F1 for as long as I have since the late 90s you’ll know that the vast majority of F1 fans and a lot of the broadcasters didn’t like this track, they called it boring, not great for racing and nobody would miss it if it was dropped. Personally I always liked it a lot but it’s funny to see so many modern fans thinking it’s an all time classic and great for racing.
Oh and I loved the corner names.
Heck yeah it's funny....people were not pleased they left Ricard after 1990, hated how this place wasn't near a major city, and missed watching cars blast down the Mistral straight. Even Gerhard Berger said the Magny Cours circuit was too smooth, and needed a few bumps engineered in.

Great stuff It would be far more entertaining than Paul Ricard... don’t get me wrong PR is decent for GT racing but for F1 not so much
Paul Richard is one of my favourite tracks... just not for cars that are too areo dependent. It's particularly good with slower cars. Ripping around with hot hatches is a lot of fun on sims that have both hot hatches and the track is so much fun when you get a full lobby of friends together!
Paul Ricard is an excellent layout. Paul Ricard was, is and always will be a chicane-fest of crap.
I remember Magny Cours first race held up back in 1991 i watched the race live. Alain Prost was the pole position and debuted the new Ferrari 643. But the Williams was faster in race conditions and Nigel Mansell took the win with a great overtake over Alain. At the time the drivers found the circuit uncharacteristic and boring but considering modern circuits in general i think the french track is indeed very technicall and i love driving it in racing sims. In fact i just drove French GP in GP4 in this track two days ago and it was pretty enjoyable. It could held a good 2021 F1 race the DRS would definetly be useful in the fast section before the Adelaide hairpin.

I always get a laugh whenever I see a comment about how [Race Track Name] needs to come back and replace whatever track is actually on the calendar for a certain country. Most of the F1 races at Magny-Cours were as dull as dishwater, yet that damn thing called nostalgia makes people think it was amazing(and it doesn't help that Paul Ricard is also crap). Don't get me wrong, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and there are fans of even the worst tracks out there, but I can't help but laugh a bit whenever I see a comment from someone who's had the rose-tinted glasses on a little too long.
Remember watching F1 Season review on DVD and literally 10 drivers crossed white line at pit exit in the race, think it was 2002 not sure.
Magny Cours was rubbish. Always produced crap races. However Paul Ricard is so bad this doesn't look so bad in that light. However its still rubbish. France needs better cirrcuits

The big mistake they made with this track was when they reprofiled the end of the lap prior to the 2003 race. Why they didn’t take the chance to extend the super cramped pit lane I’ll never know

Can F1 handle a Hotwheels track?
Love it from driving perspective - it gives that "I can screw up any lap" vibe with fast flow chickens and some other meat-slapping corners. But same reason is why it would be difficult to overtake under normal conditions. But with sprinklers - oh yeah, this track can provide some magnificent tire-cooking characteristics for team strategists when is drying up.
Against most tracks it would be easy to skip this track. But - vs Paul Ricard it might be pretty even though.
The new reg F1 cars of 2022 would have a blast racing here with all the DRS zones. Maybe widen the track a bit on those straights and lets see it back on the calendar.
Could you please do other old tracks? Like kylami in south Africa or old zaandvoort or Jeref idk I haven't ever seen cars go around some tracks. Just became an F1 fan and like all that you do that has any history at all. Thanks
For Context, fastest official time done on this layout was Juan Pablo Montoya in 2004 who did a 1:13.377 in Q1 that year so these cars aren't as dramatically faster over 1 lap than I expected

Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours is a grade one circuit.
Magnys Cours was a great flowing circuit, but had pretty much no interesting races in 17 years. People bash Paul Ricard, but the 2018 race was pretty good - it was just 2019 that was boring. Magnys Cours could be altered to make overtaking a bit easier, but it'll never happen because it's in the middle of nowhere. Problem is there aren't many decent tracks in France that are big enough for F1. Aside from Paul Ricard and Magnys Cours, there's Le Mans which is too big for F1 or the shorter Bugatti Circuit at Le Mans which isn't great. Most other tracks in France are too small or too remote. I suppose they could build another, but the French government won't pay for it, and people will probably say we tried that with Magnys Cours and look how that turned out.
F1 should return to Magny-Cours.
I wonder if this track maybe suffers the same “nostalgia” effect of Imola… we were all buzzing for that to be back on the calendar but it doesn’t lend itself to modern F1… I remember this track from F1 ‘06 and it was my best track, loved it, but similarly I worry it would be heartbreaking if it wasn’t as good as I remember
Please no. It was bad enough in the 90s. Very processional races, annoying to get to for fans and the drivers hated it. If it has to move from Paul Ricard, I'd rather have it at Le Mans. Even the Bugatti circuit would be better than Magny Cours.

it must be funny seeing the bump in views this vid might get just after there's a french gp at paul ricard. the only conclusion I can make is that I cannot make a conclusion on which would be better for racing between the two, probably neither, tbh

Maybe its just me the circuit de la sarthe GP circuit has always been a amusing prospect for F1 moto GP already races there so it have a grade 1 rating

Racing there was usually poor. But at the same time, no one cared unless Schumacher lost back then.

Magny Cours is a very overrated circuit by new F1 fans because of Paul Ricard's awfulness, it is a narrow track with very little overtaking and even for refueling era days it used to have much more passing in the pits than the average track. Schumacher winning with a four stop strategy in 2004 was the peak of it, he essentially ran light on fuel the entire race to beat Alonso for the win. F1's website literally described it as "the perfect strategic dummy by the Scuderia [Ferrari] to get around the conundrum posed by losing track position to a slower car at a track where overtaking was near-impossible."
At the same time, Paul Ricard is hated by older fans because new=bad, everything has to be as it was in 2004 and Tilke/tarmac=bad

What's "Nuerburgring" in the Nuerburgring chicane if the elevations are different? Same for Imola chicane. Maybe they look similar on a map, but driving through them looks like a very different experience. Elevation and camber are as important parts of any corner as its radius and length.
I always liked watching the French GP from this track. I have never been a fan of Paul Ricard from a tv perspective. I have always found all the colored lines distracting. I saw the SRO racing at Magny Cours earlier this year and it was a big blast of nostalgia. Would love to see the French GP return in the future.
Always thought the 180° turn was called Escargot (snail in french because of this spiraling line like a shell) but I guess I just imagined that in my mind
I'll say it could have a F1 race, but the racing would be pretty bad. Also the pits are quite old and would probably need to be renovated.
It would be perfect for F1 if they'd put some of those big bollards right at the edge on corner exits. Then you wouldn't have to police the track limits.
if i was the fia i would bring it back but keep PR and drop monaco ... the cars are too big now for any real racing its a statists race now sadly how ever i would drop Russia and abut Dhabi for Dubai and bring back turkey

Paul ricard is an awful race but it’s a bloody brilliant drive, I’d definitely miss in in the f1 games as it’s a track the AI arnt gods at

You should "multiply" the FH2020 and get each one their sound (ferrari, honda, merc and renault); i'd point out the f1 megapack by shr modding for that matter
The engine sounds in that pack are shit. None of them sound even remotely realistic and they’re poor quality
