Telling Luke Bryan thanks but no thanks wasn't Alex Miller's first moment of defiance. The Season 19 American Idol singer was a country favorite on the show. With his baby face, sturdy stature and strong voice the teen seemed like an easy finalist, if not winner.
What worked once for Scotty McCreery would surely work again, right?
We'll never know. Miller refused to bend his traditional country sound toward the center even after Bryan told him that's what he needed to do to advance deep into the competition. "I feel like I'm kind of a Matt Dillon when it comes to country music," he says, referring to a character from the TV show Gunsmoke. "I do stick to my guns. I do what I enjoy musically. At the end of the day if you can't get up and enjoy what you do, what's the point in doing what you're doing?"
Miller clearly enjoys doing what he's doing during this performance of "Free Born Man," a song he covered on the new Miller Time album.

WOW! I don't watch American Idol so this is the first I've heard of him. SO old school country! My dad from Oklahoma would of loved this kid. Reminds me of driving around in his truck back in the day with country music playing on the AM radio 🤔... really cool

When you are a big fan of country music and tha classic country music sound and your brother-in-law comes to you who is a big time metal head who listens to all kinds of heavy metal and says whenever you play country music he wants to take a screwdriver and poke out his ear drums and then says to you a guy at work was playing a country song and he just loved it you know that country music is no longer country music when someone who literally hates country music likes a country song but when I heard this guy's music when I was listening to an old Jim Reeves song bimbo stumble across a short video of him playing on a steel guitar just made me cry for the fact that there are people out there like him that are going to be saving country music and I hope that one day he finally gets to have his dream of becoming a member of the Grand old Opry the mother stage of country music because we need more music like this out there for all of those who Miss the way country music used to sound like me and wish that it would get back to the way it used to be thank you for sticking to your guns and not listening to Luke Bryan when he told you to change because traditional music needs to be brought back because like Alan Jackson and George Strait said there was a murder committed down on music Road and he might just be that doctor that will resuscitate the country music from dying and bring it back to the way it used to sound thank you Alex Miller I almost gave up on the way country music used to sound trying to find that traditional sound that I used to love listening to back here in Canada at my grandmother's house when I was a kid watching the Grand Ole Opry thank you
