- This is a tutorial about Tempo.
In it I will go through expanding your tempo range from the default (56-240bpm) to the full range (10-600bpm).
I will also show a variety of tricks and extra uses that this offers for the Korg Volca Sample, including:
2 Bar patterns
Writing Drone tracks at slow tempos
Turning your Sample into a granular synth
Slowing tempo to make motion sequencing easier.
Some good old fashioned fist shaking
All the sounds used in this tutorial were made using the factory loaded samples that come with the unit.
As mentioned in the clip - here is a list of the Global Parameter Settings on your Sample:

And here is a tutorial about how to make drone sounds and endless decay:

One of the best Volca tutorials out there! Companies like Korg should employ people like you!
Wicked, I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Just got one of these. Nice to know theres capacity to increase functionality.
Using samples to make drones and textures due to the broader tempo.
Exciting
Omg im so glad i found this video....really wanted to make some drones and wasnt coming out how i wanted......this opens so many doors......life savererrerr thank youuuu
All in all your tutorials on Volca Sample are the best! I recently got Volca Sample2 and was amazed with the drones it can do. I'd say this Volca is instant drone machine.
Thanks 🙏🏽
2019 and still the best volca in my opinion
Man you have no idea how glad I am I found these vids
Great tip to have that bpm go up! This allows also more range for setting up a triplet by using a slice on e.g. a half beat.
Your Sample vids are the best, you show stuff no one else does. Thank you, you've given my Volca new life.
I've been late on the Sample, got it today and was nearly about to miss this video from your playlist.. I'm glad I didn't! This one and the others about the VS are all amazingly deep and double the value of the instrument for me. Gosh I love its sound, I have the microgranny and it's crunchy but the sample is massive! Cheers!
Dope bruv, glad to have been helpful in some way!
Hell yes this opens up a whole new realm of possibilities for this funky lil machine!
Great! I'm glad it can do this. I should get one soon, maybe next month.
Did you get one yet?
This was a great lesson for me about slowing down halving bpms especially in DJing
wicked!
Schtang you truly expanded my mind capacity!
You are a genius, you inspire me to tweak the hell out of my unit
+Christian Meneses
Too kind, these Volcas can do so much!
You're definitely my volca sample hero!
this is the most creativity skill to use the voca sample thanx !
very creative thinking!awesome video
richard Cnrd cheers 🤙🏼
Love it, I was curious about this so I'm very grateful that you put together this tutorial. Thanks!
+TripResort
Yeah I saw you ask me about this a while ago on Reddit, sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, I just hadn't made this video yet :)
Thanks man, it was a great tutorial, I like your channel, not only the "educational" things, your music too. Keep rockin' dude :)
ISYL ALTA [BAT_TWO] thanks 🙏 means a lot!
Great!!!! Got a hip hop beat at 104 BPM on the Volca beats. Volca Sample down to 52, then down again to 26!!!!! 4 bars!!!! Thanks!!!!
Arnoud Berkepas dope man! Glad to hear this was helpful :)
.thank you so much, this is an absolute top quality tutorial
i'm learning alot through your videos. keep them going.
Great video about hidden features of Volca Sample. Thank you, subscribed!
Thanks for your sub :)
Thats it now! I can't think of a single reason why not to have Volca Sample in my set up ;-) you'da'man! 10-BPM! ;-)
Triplebacon Art ahhh bless man! It’s dope kit
Fantastic video. Thank you for posting!!
Nice find - thanks for sharing!!!!

Very cool ninja tricks! Thanks for sharing.
Kablehead thanks!
awesome video !!!! thank you very much
Thanks so much for your effort dude.
Excellent! 👍
Great stuff sit
Thank you so much for this! NEXT LEVEL!
you taught me so much! thx a lot
Very glad to have helped! Thanks :)
Genius.
btw, If you cut the tempo to half, you can still achieve 16th notes with the delay / loop trick. I do mostly techno and it works well:)
yeah true, I use the same trick for double time hip-hop hit hats and such too :)
Great stuff, thanks.😎
Thanks...great tutorial..
Powerfull tutorial!!
doooood 10bpm synced to a FM and Modular could get insaaaaane with the space drones, think about how much motion sequence time that would give you per step
so cool man!
this is ace thanks for this great!!
+bananepoep
Cheers man, been watching all your clips, loving it :)
+Schtang great man thanks
This is awesome. I'm new to making music. I own the volca sample myself, do you have a video showing a good system how to throw a good rythem together. I like the idea of automation so I can change it quite drastically with little input. Thanks in advanced 🕉️👍
Fokking AWESOME Dude!!
Thanks man! :D
Thank you so much :)
Petr Houška thanks to you too!
Thanks man!
+Ilmari Lahti
No worries man, happy to contribute to the pool!
i think i love you
awesome! thx!!! :D
So basically in this situation with slow tempo, you are using the same method of making drones by playing with decay but slow tempo gives you ability to work with motion sequencer more comfortably because of it's slowness? What is better, putting notes to sequencer or just playing with decay to make drone sounds? How do you combine this?
Yes essentially you’re right it can be better with the slowness- but it can also be problematic too.
As far as I know - the motion sequencer on the Volcas is not fluid. Each value is snapped to the transient of the sequencer. So if the high pass filter has a value of 19 on step 9 and then a value of 114 on step 10 - it will snap. Rather than blur over nicely. This could have changed in a software update but I don’t believe so.
This can always be countered with heavy reverb and maybe Attack.
If you put notes on the sequencer then you won’t get the full tail of the envelope and there is lots of juicy bits there - it I’ll keep re-triggering the sound and I personally believe the drone isn’t as smooth. So whipping the decay up I think is preferential.
But certain values to motion sequence like Panning I think work pretty well despite the value snapping.
Melody can also be written in with the sequencer and that could also sound great.
I saw you have a PO-12. Have you ever tried syncing the Volca Sample with the PO-12 while turning the tempo below 40BPM? I wonder if it will stay synced or not? My guess is no, but maybe.
Yeah I have done this quite a bit! And you are right, it doesn't sync. It starts to go whack at about 55-60 bpm. But it does create some awesome glitchy percussion if you are cool with that. It goes out of time yes but it causes the PO's to jump about 3 steps at a time, and this coupled with its punch in effects creates a pretty awesome little incidental percussion machine :)
Schtang Lucky for me, I'm into that sort of thing!
A very useful tutorial! Are you using only the built in samples?
Thanks very much! Yes all of my Volca Sample tutorials use the stock samples :)
Yoooo tysmmm
Why don't you make anymore videos on your channel?
How can I transfer sample from PC to Volca? Can I save the products made from the device to your PC? how can I do?
Thanks for all those great tutorials. Is it possible to change pitch of a step in pattern?
+Ammanuel Tekeste
Yes you can hold down a step on the sequencer and then tweak the Speed knob for each sample to change pitch. :)
+Schtang lol sometimes the solution is that simple.I have been holding function on step-rec mode and couldn't get past the first step lol. Otherwise, I like the digital sound and the pitch and amplitude functions. As always, thank you.
+Schtang I beg your pardon but may i bother you one more time about the pitch change: I would like to change of a part within its sequence not for samples but to change the pitch of one sample thru each step its on? to creat an arp from one sample. Thank you.
+Ammanuel Tekeste
I'm not sure if this is what you mean, but you would need to turn on Motion Record which is Func + Step 12. Then hold down each step and turn the Speed knob. This video explains how to write in pitch changes: ruclips.net/video/LqERKnEWM_M/видео.html
To create a pitch changing arp, you could turn on the Loop setting which is Func + Step 11 and then play with the Pitch Envelope EG Int / Attack / Decay.
Sorry if this wasn't what you were after, can't really understand what your question is. :D
Thank you. My apologize for my unclear writing but your detailed answers my question:) I appreciate your patience. I had to return my sample because some samples don't make sounds despite being turned "on".
thanks!!!! imgur link is deleted, could you upload again?
The sound didn't come on until about 3:38 ! Was that on purpose?
I wonder what the motion sequence resolution is, per step?
Yeah I wonder that too - I think it’s a value per step but maybe there’s a slight fade between values to mask the jumpiness a little bit
Is there a way to adjust the bpm so that the values change slower while turning the knob? It's very difficult to get exactly the bpm I want because the knob is so sensitive.
Yo!
I think you just have to make a choice - do I need an extended tempo range or do I need to be able to make quick and finite tempo adjustments in a live setting. It is quite sensitive though, one way to help yourself is to change the knob to something a bit bigger and easier to grip. It makes finer adjustments a lot easier :)
2 more days till my volca arrives!!
hi there,
every time i change the tempo on a memory bank it changes it on all memory banks. This will happen even when I save a certain tempo on one bank - it will change the tempo on all. It did not use to do this. Any guesses?
thanks!
Christopher Carr yo!
In my experience it's always changed the tempo for all patterns. I'm sure it's just a master tempo knob. I have often wished that you could save a tempo for each pattern tho :)
Do you know if there's a reason that there is a tempo limit? I see no reason to limit that :/
Thanks a lot for the tutorial though! I have a lot to learn from you...
+Peter Marsh (breadloaf64)
Thanks for the kind words mayne, I can't see a solid reason for limiting it, no. I guess upwards of 600 is getting fairly pointless perhaps? and under 10 I dunno. I guess most people stick to the more conventional bpm range, make the box to suit the masses kinda thing.
schtang i have to ask this. i don't get it. when i try to pitch a single note to make a melody, it doesnt work. its changing the gobal pitch of the sample not just the one step i want. how do i achive this? its at 4:19
Yo!
The only thing that I can think of is that you don't have motion sequencing enabled. You need to hold down function while pressing step 12 on what ever sample slot. Then you can hold down a particular step and dial in your desired pitch :)
Just ordered a sample - had no idea the tempo wielded so much power! How long have you been playing? How did you find all this out??
camman1056 I got my Sample maybe August 2016, and then kinda played on it every day for a few months and found some cool tricks, read the 'manual', was on forums yadda yadda :p
Dude will this work on the Volca bass?
Great tutorial. Just explain better that to change single note eg or speed , activate func+s2 motion seq . .
Moreno Ubuntu ok
hi man great vids! One question: if i want to jump from one tempo to another (for example from 180 to 85 bpm) there is a way to do it but as an instant tempo change? I'd like to do it without hearing the pattern slowing until it reach the new tempo
Yo mate! Thanks for the love :)
Unfortunately no, I had an idea that the tempo knob could be automated and you could record the tempo for each pattern but unfortunately it doesn't respond to motion sequencing.
i fucking love analog.
Shame this is digital then 😂
if you have multiple volcas synced and you adjust the global tempo setting will it automatically adjust all the other volcas?
eugene gallagher Yeah! Whichever is the start in the chain will dictate the rest of the devices :)
hello bro, lovin' your videos, I have a question, I just purchased my volca, it has too much background noise, even when the headphones are unplugged you can hear the noise through the unit´s speaker, the noise does not increment when turning the volume up or down, but qhen I turn the treble of the analogue isolator to the right It gets worse. I was hoping you could tell me if this happen to you as well or should I return the unit. Thanks so very much in advance bro.
+Julián Acosta
Hey bruv thanks for the love!
I too have a constant hiss when my unit is in standby or if only one or two channels are playing. It gets slightly worse when I turn up the treble but also when I hold down mute and memory. I think that all volcas have the hiss but I have read that some units are worse than others. You may have picked up one of the ones with louder passive noise. I can only hear mine hissing from the inbuilt speaker when my ear is 20cm or closer, so if its sitting on my desk I can't hear it hissing at all. I think the hissing is mainly caused by the analog isolators themselves.
If you have a warranty and you can take it back, you may as well swap it out and see if there's a difference. I too find it slightly annoying (coming from a softsynth background) but I also think that a subtle hiss is part of the charm of hardware instruments.
+Schtang thanks for your inmediate answer mate, I guess i'm not used to that kind of hiss. keep on rockin, I love your videos, they are 1 of the main reasons I bought my volca, thanks!
+Julián Acosta
Cheers bro, very kind of you :D
+Julián Acosta
Happy to answer any questions you may have in the future, good luck with your new volca :)
I seem to have a problem similar to this , maybe you have had this experience. It's almost like so,e feedback but it's like a real crunchy 8 bit like tone for only a few seconds. It happens with the built in speakers and headphones . Also the analogue isolater def makes a fuzzy noise when I move them.
Man should I get this or the FM?
Mac Joseph that totally depends on your current setup and what kind of music you'd like to make :) If you have nothing I would say the Sample for sure, great beginners tool and you can do drums, bass and some melody - so enough for a full track. You can also load your own samples on to it of course, so you can get your vibe on quickly. If you have some synths already and know a bit about synthesis then the FM is amazing. The FM I would say is the most capable Volca But also the most complicated and difficult to learn. It's quite a different and strange way to synthesise but if you wrap your head around it, it's an incredible tool to make everything, from rich warm organ tones through to tough, harsh crazy noise :)
Schtang i wanted something practical i can use with traktor in a club setting to help me play and remix songs via midi clock in traktor.
nice hacking!
