  • This is a tutorial about Tempo.
    In it I will go through expanding your tempo range from the default (56-240bpm) to the full range (10-600bpm).
    I will also show a variety of tricks and extra uses that this offers for the Korg Volca Sample, including:
    2 Bar patterns
    Writing Drone tracks at slow tempos
    Turning your Sample into a granular synth
    Slowing tempo to make motion sequencing easier.
    Some good old fashioned fist shaking
    All the sounds used in this tutorial were made using the factory loaded samples that come with the unit.
    As mentioned in the clip - here is a list of the Global Parameter Settings on your Sample:
    i.imgur.com/Ped...
    And here is a tutorial about how to make drone sounds and endless decay:

    I've been late on the Sample, got it today and was nearly about to miss this video from your playlist.. I'm glad I didn't! This one and the others about the VS are all amazingly deep and double the value of the instrument for me. Gosh I love its sound, I have the microgranny and it's crunchy but the sample is massive! So basically in this situation with slow tempo, you are using the same method of making drones by playing with decay but slow tempo gives you ability to work with motion sequencer more comfortably because of it's slowness? What is better, putting notes to sequencer or just playing with decay to make drone sounds? How do you combine this?

    • @Schtang
      @Schtang  2 года назад

      Yes essentially you’re right it can be better with the slowness- but it can also be problematic too.
      As far as I know - the motion sequencer on the Volcas is not fluid. Each value is snapped to the transient of the sequencer. So if the high pass filter has a value of 19 on step 9 and then a value of 114 on step 10 - it will snap. Rather than blur over nicely. This could have changed in a software update but I don’t believe so.
      This can always be countered with heavy reverb and maybe Attack.
      If you put notes on the sequencer then you won’t get the full tail of the envelope and there is lots of juicy bits there - it I’ll keep re-triggering the sound and I personally believe the drone isn’t as smooth. So whipping the decay up I think is preferential.
      But certain values to motion sequence like Panning I think work pretty well despite the value snapping.
      Melody can also be written in with the sequencer and that could also sound great.

    I saw you have a PO-12. Have you ever tried syncing the Volca Sample with the PO-12 while turning the tempo below 40BPM? I wonder if it will stay synced or not? My guess is no, but maybe.

    • @Schtang
      @Schtang  8 лет назад

      Yeah I have done this quite a bit! And you are right, it doesn't sync. It starts to go whack at about 55-60 bpm. But it does create some awesome glitchy percussion if you are cool with that. It goes out of time yes but it causes the PO's to jump about 3 steps at a time, and this coupled with its punch in effects creates a pretty awesome little incidental percussion machine :)

    Thanks for all those great tutorials. Is it possible to change pitch of a step in pattern?

    • @Schtang
      @Schtang  9 лет назад +1

      +Ammanuel Tekeste
      Yes you can hold down a step on the sequencer and then tweak the Speed knob for each sample to change pitch. :)

    • @am5790
      @am5790 9 лет назад +2

      +Schtang lol sometimes the solution is that simple.I have been holding function on step-rec mode and couldn't get past the first step lol. Otherwise, I like the digital sound and the pitch and amplitude functions. As always, thank you.

    • @am5790
      @am5790 9 лет назад +1

      +Schtang I beg your pardon but may i bother you one more time about the pitch change: I would like to change of a part within its sequence not for samples but to change the pitch of one sample thru each step its on? to creat an arp from one sample. Thank you.

    • @Schtang
      @Schtang  9 лет назад +1

      +Ammanuel Tekeste
      I'm not sure if this is what you mean, but you would need to turn on Motion Record which is Func + Step 12. Then hold down each step and turn the Speed knob. This video explains how to write in pitch changes: ruclips.net/video/LqERKnEWM_M/видео.html
      To create a pitch changing arp, you could turn on the Loop setting which is Func + Step 11 and then play with the Pitch Envelope EG Int / Attack / Decay.
      Sorry if this wasn't what you were after, can't really understand what your question is. :D

    • @am5790
      @am5790 9 лет назад +1

      Thank you. My apologize for my unclear writing but your detailed answers my question:) I appreciate your patience. I had to return my sample because some samples don't make sounds despite being turned "on".

    • @Schtang
      @Schtang  4 года назад

      Yeah I wonder that too - I think it’s a value per step but maybe there’s a slight fade between values to mask the jumpiness a little bit

  • @BradHebert
    @BradHebert 7 лет назад +2

    Is there a way to adjust the bpm so that the values change slower while turning the knob? It's very difficult to get exactly the bpm I want because the knob is so sensitive.

    • @Schtang
      @Schtang  7 лет назад

      Yo!
      I think you just have to make a choice - do I need an extended tempo range or do I need to be able to make quick and finite tempo adjustments in a live setting. It is quite sensitive though, one way to help yourself is to change the knob to something a bit bigger and easier to grip. It makes finer adjustments a lot easier :)

    hi there,
    every time i change the tempo on a memory bank it changes it on all memory banks. This will happen even when I save a certain tempo on one bank - it will change the tempo on all. It did not use to do this. Any guesses?
    thanks!

    • @Schtang
      @Schtang  7 лет назад

      Christopher Carr yo!
      In my experience it's always changed the tempo for all patterns. I'm sure it's just a master tempo knob. I have often wished that you could save a tempo for each pattern tho :)

  • @petermarsh4578
    @petermarsh4578 9 лет назад +1

    • @Schtang
      @Schtang  9 лет назад +1

      +Peter Marsh (breadloaf64)
      Thanks for the kind words mayne, I can't see a solid reason for limiting it, no. I guess upwards of 600 is getting fairly pointless perhaps? and under 10 I dunno. I guess most people stick to the more conventional bpm range, make the box to suit the masses kinda thing.

  • @dan_g-DreadMassaker
    @dan_g-DreadMassaker 7 лет назад +1

    schtang i have to ask this. i don't get it. when i try to pitch a single note to make a melody, it doesnt work. its changing the gobal pitch of the sample not just the one step i want. how do i achive this? its at 4:19

    • @Schtang
      @Schtang  7 лет назад

      Yo!
      The only thing that I can think of is that you don't have motion sequencing enabled. You need to hold down function while pressing step 12 on what ever sample slot. Then you can hold down a particular step and dial in your desired pitch :)

    hello bro, lovin' your videos, I have a question, I just purchased my volca, it has too much background noise, even when the headphones are unplugged you can hear the noise through the unit´s speaker, the noise does not increment when turning the volume up or down, but qhen I turn the treble of the analogue isolator to the right It gets worse. I was hoping you could tell me if this happen to you as well or should I return the unit. Thanks so very much in advance bro.

    • @Schtang
      @Schtang  9 лет назад

      +Julián Acosta
      Hey bruv thanks for the love!
      I too have a constant hiss when my unit is in standby or if only one or two channels are playing. It gets slightly worse when I turn up the treble but also when I hold down mute and memory. I think that all volcas have the hiss but I have read that some units are worse than others. You may have picked up one of the ones with louder passive noise. I can only hear mine hissing from the inbuilt speaker when my ear is 20cm or closer, so if its sitting on my desk I can't hear it hissing at all. I think the hissing is mainly caused by the analog isolators themselves.
      If you have a warranty and you can take it back, you may as well swap it out and see if there's a difference. I too find it slightly annoying (coming from a softsynth background) but I also think that a subtle hiss is part of the charm of hardware instruments.

      I seem to have a problem similar to this , maybe you have had this experience. It's almost like so,e feedback but it's like a real crunchy 8 bit like tone for only a few seconds. It happens with the built in speakers and headphones . Also the analogue isolater def makes a fuzzy noise when I move them.

    Man should I get this or the FM?

    • @Schtang
      @Schtang  8 лет назад

      Mac Joseph that totally depends on your current setup and what kind of music you'd like to make :) If you have nothing I would say the Sample for sure, great beginners tool and you can do drums, bass and some melody - so enough for a full track. You can also load your own samples on to it of course, so you can get your vibe on quickly. If you have some synths already and know a bit about synthesis then the FM is amazing. The FM I would say is the most capable Volca But also the most complicated and difficult to learn. It's quite a different and strange way to synthesise but if you wrap your head around it, it's an incredible tool to make everything, from rich warm organ tones through to tough, harsh crazy noise :)
