Great question! We build a lot of our dulcimers with four tuning gears in case a player wants to play with four strings at some point in the future. Nearly everyone plays with three strings these days, so that's how this particular instrument is set up. The fourth machine Head is just to future-proof the instrument. (Historically, a double melody string was very common, but many players prefer a single melody string at this point.)
Is it possible to have a bass dulcimer with a lower pitch overall? Would a bass dulcimer be able to take the place of an acoustic bass guitar? Ie. Mostly one note at a time? I'm an electric bass guitar player... I recently fell in love with my moms old mountain dulcimer... I've been looking into an acoustic bass guitar AND a bass dulcimer... not sure I can afford both... a lower pitched bass dulcimer would be the thing of my dreams! 😆
Yes, but no - the bass dulcimer is an octave below a standard dulcimer. (standard dulcimer is D above middle C, 2nd space treble clef A, and 4th line treble clef D. Bass dulcimer (this instrument) is an octave lower - bass clef 3rd line D, bass clef 5th line A, and D above middle C. We run into problems getting a decent acoustic tone from a dulcimer pitched this low, since the body is so small (compared to a cello, or an orchestral bass). We don't currently make/offer anything lower than this instrument. Thanks for listening! RIchard

Nice one with the pickup! :)
Thank you!
Why is there 4 tuning pegs?
