A great KO punch when thrown as directed. Thanks for emphasizing that it is not an “arm” punch. Unfortunately, there are coaches who do not teach this punch properly. Glad that you have set things straight. Appreciate your time.
Great video any insight on how to defend this punch? It seems to be the hardest punch to evade or defend once you set it up right. The only way I can think of is dip low and outside to the right and shield with a high left glove. Correct?

I didn’t know their was that much more power added to the overhand right compared to the straight right. I like the right cross as well. After learning the overhand right and right cross I see that I needed to land against taller opponents. The overhand and right cross is also more effective than the straight right for those who would slip and lean at odd angles like Mayweather or James Toney. Thanks Tom!

thanks a lot brother I'm 49 years old and always did boxing as a workout, but never learn the science behind it like I should of I train on and off as much as I can because I work 6 to 7 days as a nurse, at John 3:16 boxing gym in Ocala Florida, so maybe next year I would like to do a masters division amateur boxing just to get it out of my bucket list :-) any tips greatly appreciated God bless have a great day..
@The Joker going good I appreciate your response just training now with this covid-19 stuff I've been extremely busy as a nurse working but I'm still training I finally got a really good trainer his name is Louis great guy, so we covering the basics really good so right now I'm trying to get back to school to finish my physical therapy assistant degree so the focus is on that now but once I'm finished with school then God willing I'm doing my amateur about my masters amatuer boxing bout. I'm just going to continue training hard and continue preparing it's very exciting thanks for the response God bless. :-)
@@WorldClassBoxingChannel I'm sorry it took me so long to respond, but I've been very busy working as a nurse with this Covid 19 situation down here in Ocala Florida, still training at boxing gym John 3:16 it's on Facebook you can look it up the owner's name is Tito Ocasio AKA Jaws. Trying to get ready for the Masters division amateur bout hopefully in the near future. Thanks for all your videos they really help a lot. it's greatly appreciated God bless.
You are a fantastic boxing coach! I agree with keeping the arm position tight (or else you're going to tweak that shoulder joint) but I would allow for a little more tolerance in that arc. If not, you'll be too low to go over his guard, and you won't hit him at any distance. This punch is very effective even if not thrown with the strictest of form. Love your vids and instruction, Coach!
Great. Learnt something new today. Great channel along with some other russian and philippines channels. This is a good shorter to mid overhand but powerful, aim the temple, nose, or chin sides or down wards or try to make sure you can turn opponent's chin during or after impact. There are longer overhands(be careful of injuring shoulders or wrist or body) but fist is twisting inverted over 90 to 180 degrees depending on turn of fist and turn of body.... you can even left jab or left hook or left body jab then throw the various overhands. Another way is to suddenly step to the left and then overhand. Another way is to change the level plane by right hands was down then body upwards motion then down and throw an right overhand. Another way to to change the right overhand half way to left overhand. Important things is to see how opponent position/angle and react and then you relax and change trajectory or feints or move the body relatively to your advantages, and not trying out your own idea and not anticipating to the ground situation or opponents flinching or weaknesses or tendencies. missing the overhand you can hit their solar plexus as a backup, or even just aiming their hands then body hooks or jabs. be creative yet calculated unexpectedly. lengthen the jab hand to blind the vision(and also they cant punch back) and then suddenly overhand is good tactic. You could even upjab or flicker left jab by hiding right hand and then do overhand right.
Glad I could help! Thanks for all the support!👊🏼 I really appreciate it! Please consider sharing the videos. Also for other boxing related information and tips follow me on Instagram @tomyankelloboxing
Great channel btw, and still awaiting your 7 types of jab variations cheers..... Hiding the right hand or left hand(when right hand is jabbing is very cool details and jab shoulder higher to aim to keep right leg grounded and loaded, parry and blocks are great also to delay or deter the opponents). you could also parallel square up more abit the right leg(parallel the hips) before, during the straight right or right cross. look at solar plexus to see the hips and shoulders of enemy at contact range(short to mid range where opponent can hit us, to respond). Feints or show off at out of range is safer.
Hi, coach your videos never disappoint. I have a question though, what hand position do you recommend for the overhand right thumb up or down? I've seen tyson thow it thumb up with the elbow high to loop around the guard.
You used the key term. "Loop" a looping right hand is a bit different than an overhand right, which has caused some controversy. I know the exact Tyson punch you are referring to. Thumb up or down can both be effective, obviously. Some fighters change fist position just to accommodate an angle to land a punch. Sneak a punch through space.
World Class Boxing Channel I always strive to have excellent form when i throw punches, i get why it's the last punch you teach it's tricky, especially for someone like me, i usually throw it thumb down so i get a little more reach, with thumb up i feel like it lands on the edge of my knuckles which is a big no-no.
World Class Boxing Channel we're all right coach thank you for asking, i gotta say this is my favorite video about the overhand right in all of RUclips it was very insightful.
Coach Yankello thanks for always teaching a practical guide to the boxing techniques!!! Was wondering what sports commentators mean when they say a fighter has a clubbing right hand?
Thank you I've been doing it a little differently. I will have to keep on watching this video to learn your way because you moved too fast and didn't freeze in completion, so I'm not sure whether I got it.
3:41 A question , that there is when some old school boxers (like Gene Fuller, Rocky Marciano and I think Mike Tyson also did it) directly took a step with their right leg with the overhand
Thank you for the explanation! I understand the mechanics. But i have a question. It seems to me by the video that you are not reaching the chin, but the chest of the opponent. Or you are attacking an oponent which is with the knees bend. Am i right?
Coach Yankello, could you tell me how much emphasis that is used to generate power comes from the back leg 🦵 hip turn and or the weight drop on the front leg? I know what you said before it’s about fundamentals of having a good base. You explained this for Rocky Marciano returning back to his base of his back leg. That being said I’ve noticed when I’m bridging the distance with a step I’m more concerned about weight transfer. This is where I focus more on weight drop & weight transfer on the front leg. While if I’m stationary & not advancing forward as much I’ll be more 60% back leg 🦵 with more hip torque. I use both though.
Hey Andrew! I explain all that in my instructional videos! Get the package it’s on sale. I break down the 9 basic punches and the footwork and I give a great drill to develop great weight distribution. No one on planet earth is going to break it down like I did in these videos. Not too many people even know and the ones that do most of them can’t teach it.

0:01 last punch to teach
0:55 last punch to lear /to not throw looping punchee
1:20 but devasting punch
1:27 the way : its all about shoulder plane
Lft higher than rt shoulder
1:50 traj /shoulder plane : comes like rt hook
2:00 not raise shoulder up too high /hurt shoulder /becomes arm punch
2:10 punch finish off with lft shoulder drop down low / position for lft hook to body
2:23 arch punch over jab / or over top
2:33 way do it : not by looping arm over top
Its like hook shoulder plane /keep it tight /body goes down /shoulder changes ready for hook body
2:53 ready gor hook to body
3:00 or I can come back with hook to head /
But thats the way 45 to 45
3:25 everything twist
I go from east to west
3:33 not loop it let head get past knee
Twisting/ just like goin down to throw lft hook to body
3:50 so in reality shoulder not high up / elbow not gettin above shoulder /shoulder is like hook
4:15 I can set it up too /with jsbs
Jab head /jab body / jab head drop down and throw overhan rt
(its not jab to body then overhand / its all one motion)
5:00 show it
5:20 way do it /practice it :
Rt hook body / mid of body / rt hook/ over hand
5:45 only differencr rt hook / and over hand is : shift shoulder plane like going to body(throw lft hook to body )
6:00 not arm punch /hurt shoulder
5:55 6:08 everything twist
6:12 transfer shoulder traj : thats make it come over arm (lead left arm ) /top
6:45 then I can follow up throw lft hook body /or lft hook all way back to head
6:52 the punch is :drop so guy looks down then throw it
(Same time I drop down I throw the punch/ and come over top )
7:03 Iam twisting /not coming forward and take head past knee
(its all body /its all twist / not arm )
The tighter the better
Dropping change level to feint
