    This was my dresser and it was cracked like that when I got it ,
    I had thought of painting it but because of its beauty and age I just couldn’t do it I kept a runner over the cracks :) it was also massive in my small room , so I decided to sell it and sold it to a lady that had a shop in lehi , can’t think of her name right now .

    Thanks for keeping this beautiful piece in it’s original form. Yes, it’s not perfect, but it still has history, and character. If the price is right, someone will value it and be thrilled to take it home.

    Great video & what fun that you didn’t paint that piece. I think it’s great that you have a something that someone else can DIY-like Zeb said “a project piece”. 👍❤️

    Appreciate your attempt to honor this piece, my understanding is that any kind of repair or restoration depreciates the antique value, so at any point you could paint it! I would enjoy it either way! Hardware heaven! Blessed and safe days!

    Thank you for showing how to save the dresser finish. I have a dining room table that I inherited and have been agonizing over how to deal with the finish on it. I really didn't want to paint it. Thank you!

  • @lesliejohnson7247
    @lesliejohnson7247 Год назад +5

    Rather than painting it if it doesn’t sell, I’d use those stain markers on the splits.
    It doesn’t NEED to be restored for thousands of dollars. You’re keeping its age and showing it! I watch a furniture restoration guy and he never wants to sand away it’s signs of age.

    If I lived in Utah it would be coming home, love it. Good decision to leave it as is. It's an epic piece that could go in numerous rooms in an house, so best left to the buyer to figure out what to do with the finish. It would be beautiful restored but I could see it with inlays or transfers.

    I guess I'd have to see it in person. I loved it after you sanded the top(and I usually don't like the bleached/raw wood look) the cracks were still visible but didn't look bad. On my screen the whole mirror top looks a different color from the bottom half. Loved the video but I think I am on team paint with this one. Antique or not if I find one like this I'm separating the top for a wall mounted piece(great bathroom or foyer) and the base is it's own piece. But unlike those that start screaming 'why would you do that to an Antique' ..I can appreciate both and enjoy the video.

    So glad you are leaving this piece unpainted. We have a mix of painted and unpainted, restored and unrestored antiques in our home...makes for a better variety! I did wonder why you didn't consider adding a new piece of veneer where it was removed in such a noticeable place vs painting it.

    • @janetbyrne7765

    Jami and Jeb, I love the antique dresser and I like seeing the “seams” in the top. It is a grand old dame of a piece and she might show she had a past, but she’s a beauty and adds a different touch of class to your shop! I’m so glad you did that! I hope you keep throwing in new approaches in your videos.

    I restore antiques here in Orkney, the history of the piece is as important as it’s age and condition.
    I have an 1880 walnut sideboard similar to yours, but with more carving. It had been painted with chalk paint, turquoise 😮 a hosepipe and toothbrush + tons of wax later, it has my tv on it ❤

    I’m even wondering if those 2 pieces go together. They are both different colors and the bottom design is different than the top. I believe the mirror is older than the bottom. The lower part just doesn’t coincide with a piece of that age.

    • @JamiRayVintage

      It’s a water based stain and top coat. It is not clay based like the paint

  • @maryfrances3191

    I just bought some dark and decrepit. What’s the difference between that and the oil wax you used?

    • @JamiRayVintage
      @JamiRayVintage  Год назад

      Oil wax is an oil you wipe on and dark and decrepit can soak in or sit on top of an existing finish’s fb it’s water based
