Thank you very much for probably the most helpful RUclips videos I've ever watched. I don't know the 0:11 1st thing about brakes but my son can over with his 2016 civic and we replaced the rear pads with needle nose pliers and all. No lights flashing and no more squealing. Keep the diy stuff coming. Saved a lot of money I don't have.
Thank you! I have always replaced my own brake pads, but with that electronic parking brake I was worried I wouldn’t be able to do my rear pads. Thank you for this video!!
I'm glad you're spreading the word about how totally unnecessary it is to remove the back cover of the electronic parking brake unit to retract the piston. By turning the piston as you did, it performs the same function as if you had opened the back of the EPB unit and turned the screw by hand. I don't like the idea of opening the EPB and exposing it to possible contaminants. Either way will work, but it's a lot easier to just turn the piston. In my case, I used a piston rewind tool and once the piston stopped turning, I had to also retract the piston further straight back using a typical piston retraction tool to accommodate the new rotor/brake pads. The other 2 methods are to use a very expensive scan tool or hook up the EPB leads to a 12V battery, but why go through all that trouble when you can simply use a piston rewind tool or in your case, a pair of needle nose pliers. Bravo!
Did my brother's 18 accord. He was telling me about the e brake motor thing... I was like wth you talking about. He showed me a video with the guy doing that. I never seen nothing like that. I searched myself and found this video. Just like I thought... Regular brake job lol. Just did his brakes and it was smooth. Thanks!
Followed this procedure with the correct compressing tool and OEM pads on a 2018 Accord. It worked flawlessly, no error codes, no damage to the parking brake.
This guide was super helpful, I was able to repair my back breaks. I want to give advice to others. When tightening the piston, if you turn it all the way to the right (can no longer rotate) and the piston is still up, use a c-clap to push down the actual piston.
I performed the same procedure on my mom's 2019 Honda Accord, which has an electronic parking brake. However, her brake pads had worn down to the metal, necessitating a rotor replacement. I used a caliper push-back tool, and everything functioned correctly with no brake lights or issues. Soon, I'll be applying the same process to my friend's 2018 Honda Civic rear brake pads. I hope it works as smoothly as it did with my mom's 2019 Honda Accord. Hopefully, the brake light issue isn't inconsistent among some Hondas.
Dealership wanted 260 for rear brakes I paid 150 for car jack, stands, brake piston kit, and Honda pads, plus I’ll be ready for the next maintenance job now that I have the tools! Thanks for making this videos, it really does simplify everything. You’re the man!
You poor soul. That's how the addiction starts! I was in your shoes 6 yrs ago. My little $20 tool kit I got for a front motor mount job turned into a tool repertoire $3k+. I'm a mess. Now I'm rebuilding engines, replacing clutches, and begging people in the corner to let me fix their cars. It's and addiction... I hope you get the help you need before it's too late 😉
Thank you! Just watch another video first, and I've done my own brakes on every car I have owned. I was worried for a minute, didn't think it should be that hard.
im glad i found this cause my rear pads are also about half way worn out at 17k miles. it seems that the accords use the rear brakes more to compensate for dipping in the front under heavy braking, so they wear out much faster in the back. ive been getting more into maintenance but wasnt sure how to do the rear brakes cause i knew that the e-brake requires some special tool or something. awesome to see its really that simple.
What? Do you guys live in the mountains or something? I'm going to look at my rear pads tomorrow and I've got over 80k miles on them. I am a very conservative driver though.
Bro, you been a lot of help. I replaced the front ones but not the rear ones because I thought it was going to be more difficult because I thought there was more to it with disconnecting that plug, thank you so much, great video bro 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I just did my Rear Brakes on my 2018 Accord 2.0, I used your method with the needle nose pliers because I only have a C-Clamp and not a brake caliper tool. It worked perfectly when you get the hang of how to grip and hold the pliers to push and turn the piston in. I did actually remove the electronic parking brake actuator as well. Everything worked out 💯 nice smooth strong braking. I put this off for 6 months and was finally able to complete this from your video. Thanks bro 🙏
Thank you bro , much love . Took the car to Honda for a recall and they were charging me 324.00 to replace front pads . Did what you said and took me like 20 min each side works great .
Thank you, I didn't realize that you needed a certain tool to depress the rear piston, the needle nose pliers worked for me, tough going but I got it done for my daughter's car, pain in the ass ,but what you going to do? Thanks again for helping me out. 😊
Thank you so much for this video. I watched many videos and they had me trying to take off the harness, and the rear of the caliper apart. So glad I stumbled to your video. This was a lifesaver! I did have to use a c-clamp to help it compress on mines. Thank you again! Much appreciated content.
Thanks you bro. You save me a lot of money and time there was some mechanic trying to charge me a fortune saying they needed to take it apart 😂. I have never changed brakes before this was my first time and it was very easy with your vid. hope it help many others like me
Easily one of the best DIY videos I have watched, no BS wasted time. Just to the point. I have changed brakes on my other rigs but never on the Accord. Just good to be able to get have the confidence I am doing things correctly. The only thing you didn’t show that I would have been interested in was freezing the bolts. Your camera died and I think you may have forgotten. I am sure I got it but like I said I watch these video just To make sure I am going to be doing it not only correctly but efficiently. I want to thank you and I have subscribed and liked and look forward to looking you up for anything else I might need
This is a great video ,very informative, up to the point. before this video ,I watch couple of the videos that made it seem like I was gonna take apart an engine .I did my front brakes yesterday took me 15 minutes on each side ,and then I watch the videos on the rear brakes ,and I was like oh man !!!!!! but, after watching this video it’s calmed on my nerves.
Also, have you’ve had any problems with the calipers locking up on you. I’ve read a couple of people would get their brakes locked , because of not resetting the computer code on the honda..
Wow. Great video. I have been doing my own brakes since 1966. Disc brakes are so much easier than drums. But I have been afraid to try replacing my rear pads on my 2018 Accord because of the E-brake. Several videos warn about generating error codes for the computer. But you seem to have successfully avoided that.
@@DanVilla7 I replaced the rears today. It was slow for me, my Needlenosed pliers should have been thicker, but it worked. At 34,000 miles I worried one of the pads may have gotten into the rotor, but the wear was far less than I thought. Thanks once more for the great information.
@@camcoulter5993 exact same thing happened to me also at 34,000 miles - thought it was weird a rear brake went out before either of the fronts (although now I know front are bigger which makes sense); on the rear left the piston being out to far before taking pads out seemed to wear one of the pads completely down (past sensor) but other side was barely worn at all... 🤔
@@DanVilla7 First off, love the videos man - very clear and concise. I'm struggling hardcore with compressing a rear piston and made it worse by putting caliper back on car without pads to come back to after other wheels (turned car on and it reset it so it just fits the rotor barely 🤦🏻♂). I'm gonna reattach the black ebrake winder thing but when compressing should I have the car "completely off", "accessory mode/battery powers everything without engine", or "ignition/engine on"? I know doing anything with the handbrake in any of those modes is a bad idea before the new pads are on. BTW: I designed and 3D printed a tool and "V3" actually works REALLY well and should for anyone else with a 10th generation accord (i'm assuming '19-'21 probably also have same brake cylinder). I used PLA to print and works just fine but if you want something that doesn't misshape/wear down then I'd say use ABS, even though PLA has a higher tensile strength. I'll drop github link to .stl file. I just used a Creality Ender 3 (only $170 - could not recommend enough, should be a common household appliance) and it takes less than 2 hours to print
Great video man. Helped me at my job..I left d jumper booster under d hood ,hooked 2 d battery. left d key on all time during job and piston went in.didnt take d caliper apart saved time.snapon scanner didn't work...thanx a lot
Great tutorial. The brake tool kits from Harbor Freight or Amazon really help things out. Like the creator said, once the piston stops spinning, you need to compress it the rest of the way in. The kits will have both adapters. Don’t use a C-Clamp to compress the piston or you’ll end up damaging the housing on the electronic parking brake. You really don’t even need to disconnect the wire from the caliber. There is plenty of room to work with.
Glad I could help, it did work well. Like I said in the video I would recommend using a proper caliper compression tool like the one I linked in the description
I would like to mention that this may be a case by case scenario. I have a 2018 accord touring, for what that’s worth. I twisted and screwed the piston in as far as I could until it stopped and wouldn’t turn anymore, as you mentioned in the video. However when I went to reinstall the caliper it occurred to me that the piston still needed to compress at least another 3/8” to be able to fit back on. I had to hook up an inverter to run the motor in, then push the piston in by hand. I had to do this on both sides, which worked fine. It’s unfortunate I had to take this extra step but it still worked out
Thanks for the video man I just finished replacing my rear breaks by following exactly what you said on here. 2020 accord 2.0T you have a new like an subscriber
Thanks you answered my question the only thing not clear so I need to have my car ignition on during the job or after caliper release pressure I can turn it off
Well explained video.... thank you for clarifying about EPB. I watched few videos for Honda's rear brake job and it confused me how to go about retaining piston. I will try this now on my 2016 Honda Civic and hope this works. Just to confirm, I should turn ON accessories mode before turning piston clockwise right? Thank you once again!!
You made a great video bro. None of that yacky bs about your best friends dog having puppies or how your kid got an A on his test bs. To the point and proffesional. Thank you. The only change i would do is get the brake tool kit at most chain auto parts stores. They all have loaner programs. Otherwise, perfect diy video.
Changed my brake pads today (front and rear) and all went well. Your video was the most helpful of all that I'd seen. Question: My rear calipers and rotors (both sides) were hot to the touch after about a 20-minute drive. Fronts were fine. Is there a like a break-in period or something after which they will return to normal temps? I don't think I forgot anything - and NO parts left over!
Thanks! The rears seem to just engage more than the fronts for some reason. I still haven't changed my front pads. My past vw was the same changed the rear way before the front so seems pretty normal for rears to hear up more during normal driving. I. Aure if you were doing hard braking the front would have been very hot
Question: does the car need to be in the on position the whole time the job is being done, or just to release.... and then you can turn the car off until finished? Thank you in advance.
I would leave it on so you can disassemble. Once you compress the piston you can turn it off. Make sure to set the side your working on before moving to the other side and repeat the process
Thanks for this video! Did this job this morning but when I did the left side rushing because a storm was starting I forgot to put the car in Aux so I still had about an inch to go before the caliper would go over the breaks. I didn't have that brake caliper tool so I was trying everything to get that piston back. I pressed the brake and set the e brake so I could start over and same outcome? I even took the back off the caliper and turned the back shaft, it gets to a certain point and stops and still no progress. I ordered that tool which should be here Mon. I'm going to try that but if nothing happens I'm just going to order another caliper.
So ended up having to call various Honda dealers to order another caliper, end result they all said theirs a nationwide back order on them and they have no eta when they will be back in stock! I did however track a 2019 caliper down from a salvage yard. Everything worked out fine with the 2019 replacement! I'm going to mess around with the original and see if I can get it retracted. At least I'll have a backup.
I appreciate you making this video. I haven't done a lot of cars with the electronic e brake. My car has 20,000 mi and I've got to get rotors too their grooved. Did you get some aftermarket pads? Or just the regular default Honda ones? I plan on doing a little bit of an upgrade cuz 20,000 mi on rear brake pads and rotors are not good. I don't drive my car that hard at all. I bought a brand new in 2019 and I just got the 20,000 miles.
Getting ready to do this.. SO you use needle nose and push in and turn RIGHT at the same time correct? Guess you can just press straight in to compress piston? Thanks..
@@DanVilla7 Thanks for the HELP! Took Honda to dealer for a recall and of course they came back saying needed rear brakes and gave estimate of $320. Ordered OEM brakes online $70 after tax and shipping. Wasn't hard and the longest part was jacking up the car with the cheapo spare tire jack. No squeaks and no lights. Used loaner tool from O'Reilly Auto Parts. Front brakes next.
I’m genuinely curious so you don’t need a scan tool for this right? Bcuz I’m worried to mess up my one and only car lol, I’ve done the front ones but I’ve heard you needed some fancy scan tool is this true?
Great video, thank you! I have a question, there isn't a need to put brake lube on the pad where the caliber makes contact with it? I always thought that it was good to put some there to help more with squealing noise.
Thanks. As long as you put it on the area in which it slides your good. You can also put some on the back of the pad that makes contact with the piston.
This video was so much better than others I’ve seen, almost went to a mechanic until I found this video. However, my “brake” light came on and “brake system” light as well and the electronic park brake switch is flashing as well. Anyone else have this issue and anyone have a fix for it?
Thanks! The car has just under 22k miles now and started doing it for the last 300 I would say. Every time I would clean my wheels good it would go away then after a week or so start back up. I hate noises so I changed them today, quiet and squeak free now.

The front will be an easier process. You won't have to wind the piston back just compress normally,
and no electronic ebrake
Thank you man! I knew what I was doing but really just needed someone to do the whole thing !!
No problem, glad I was able to help!
Does the 10th Gen Accord not use abutment clips for the brake pads?
Lots of thanks your video will help lots of people
God bless
You made a great video bro. None of that yacky bs about your best friends dog having puppies or how your kid got an A on his test bs. To the point and proffesional. Thank you. The only change i would do is get the brake tool kit at most chain auto parts stores. They all have loaner programs. Otherwise, perfect diy video.
Thank you appreciate it!
Thanks bro was stressing on that electronic thing you made my life so much easy
I’m glad I found this channel
Good job thanks you may have just saved me hundreds of dollars, thanks.
Thank you I appreciate the detail description as you're going along
You got it glad I could help
Thank you Sir! This worked for my 2019 accord. GB 😊
👍
Maybe cycle the parking brake on and off a few times?
Great video I just changed my brakes and it was easy…keep up the great videos
Thanks!
Great video 👍 gonna do my brakes next week!
Thanks for this very detailed tutorial video.
Where would I buy the brake pads?
I got mine from the dealer
Helpful video bro just did mine today thanks 👍🏽
Thank you for your video. I was able to replace my brake pads because of it.
You're welcome!
You did a nice job with your video. Thanks for saving me some time with the e brake!
Yes he did
Excellent video. I will follow this when I'm due. Would love to see a Front video too, when you need it : )
Thanks, the front is even easier although I haven't had the need to do them yet.
Appreciate you pops ima take on this today and was just worried about the e brake
Well done. Very detailed explanation.
Great job Brother thank you for the video. God bless you
Thanks a lot for this video just saved me a lot of money
Thanks so much for the useful info. Saves me time and money!
No problem!
Thank you so much for the instructions.reslly helped me...
Awesome glad I could help
So your e break was off when you first started? And how long do you keep the car on the on position ?
For driver and passenger caliper piston, to compress both turn clockwise or is that just the passenger side?
Getting ready to do this.. SO you use needle nose and push in and turn RIGHT at the same time correct? Guess you can just press straight in to compress piston? Thanks..
Turn clockwise and push in at the same time
@@DanVilla7 Thanks for the HELP!
Thanks for the vid! Do you happen to know the torque specs for those 2 bolts holding the calipers?
No problem! Sorry I do not
Nice job You is the only one do it so simple and easy
Thanks, yeah seems that way
I’m genuinely curious so you don’t need a scan tool for this right? Bcuz I’m worried to mess up my one and only car lol, I’ve done the front ones but I’ve heard you needed some fancy scan tool is this true?
I know I’m a few years late to this video. Thanks for posting! Is it the same procedure for the front brakes?
The front are easier no electronic ebrake
Thank you for the video. Very helpful. Do youhave any video on how to replace the rear brake caliper on the 2018 accord? Thanks.
I don't sorry.
Ugh I love you bro , good shit man ! Thank you for explaining everything g!
Haha no problem glad I could help
Very good video well explained and seems quite easy 👍
how you deal with the Electrical brake? aren’t you supposed to put that on maintenance mode first?
I need an answer for this too
This video was so much better than others I’ve seen, almost went to a mechanic until I found this video. However, my “brake” light came on and “brake system” light as well and the electronic park brake switch is flashing as well. Anyone else have this issue and anyone have a fix for it?
Great video! how many miles did u have when you first heard the brake squeek?
Thanks! The car has just under 22k miles now and started doing it for the last 300 I would say. Every time I would clean my wheels good it would go away then after a week or so start back up. I hate noises so I changed them today, quiet and squeak free now.
Nice work. Where in ny are you? How have those wheel spacers held up? Worth it or nah
Thanks I'm in Long Island NY. I have zero issues with the spacers. If you want to keep oem wheels it's 100% worth it.
Very useful video! ! ! How many brake pads are in each box? where can i buy them? ?
4 total 2 pads per side. Your local Honda dealer if you want oem
