What is a Hornpipe?

- I've been asked to explain the various rhythms of fiddle tunes relative to Ceilidh and Irish Dancing. Rather than make one lengthy video, I felt it would be easier to break it down into a number of shorter videos. Plus it would be a good excuse for me to write a simple tune to accompany each video.
Two birds with one stone, I guess.
A number of subscribers have asked if they can make a small financial contribution towards my efforts. I have now opened a simple paypal account at paypal.me/peakf....
Alternatively: www.paypal.com...
I am planning to self fund the publication of a collection of my tunes, so this will help towards those costs.

G'day.
This is freakish.
I recently came across this tune somewhere and wrote it out in MuseScore. Tonight I thought that I would look around RUclips to see if it had been recorded anywhere so that I could be sure that I had it correctly as I have never played a hornpipe before. I could not find it mentioned anywhere.
So to get some idea, I clicked on "What is a Hornpipe".
You could have knocked me over with a feather - YOU WROTE IT..!!!
Thank you, it's a ripper of a tune. 🎵🪗🎶
I was told that you can recognise a hornpipe if you can sing these words on the last line.
"And he played his ukulele as the ship went down."
Billy
I just tried it on the first one that came up in Spotify, An Comhra Donn, and sure enough it works!
You hold your bow the way my grandfather did and the way I find myself drifting to pretty much every time
Excellent. Clear, informative well demonstrated, thank you very much.
Great explanation and piece
Thank you more your explanation and your demonstration!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much! Am gonna practice using your music ❤
This explains why I got weird looks playing Fisher's hornpipe at Mark O'Connor's tempo 😂
You mean like this :) ruclips.net/video/hoY15lhVL6Y/видео.html
@@peakfiddler ❤️ it wants to be a barn burner!
Good to know - such a nice cheery tune for the spring! Happy Earth Day, Peakfiddler!
Thanks Marcia, and you as well.
@@peakfiddler and happy St George's Day...
Hey, @@peakfiddler ! On a previous post, I mentioned to you that I am new to the fiddle.
I have learned enough that I’m tackling Cooley’s Reel, but I can’t figure out the lilting rhythm of this Reel.
Could you post another video, explaining how the rhythm is played for Cooley’s Reel?
THANKS!
As a dancer, this was extremely helpful! Lovely tune as well. Thanks :)
I have recently learned Harvest Home and The Boys of Blue Hill, both very fun hornpipes. Thanks to you now I get the whole dance aspect. Thanks and fiddle on.
A member of our group says to play hornpipes with a lilt strong enough to roll the airplane!
Oh, I love this! A real toe tapper!
Very helpful, thank you for teaching!
Thank you for the upload!
Beautiful tune.
Explained very well, thanks. Has helped me group the beats for Off to California-,and to slow it down...
Top Tune!
I found this video because I was unsure of the correct time signature for hornpipes. Now I know. Thanks.
Glad it helped!
Nicely played!
Great explanation and demo!
Very well explained. Loved the new tune too!
Thank you for the insight, and great tune!
Great explanation! Thanks!
Wonderful! Thank you so much!
Thia is a very nice hornpipe that you wrote.
Wow That was great! So clear!
Perfect! Thanks
Irish dancer here! Gotta love a hornpipe or a treble jig
That was wonderfull
I used to think of a hornpipe as a reel with the directions "slow it down, swing it and end the A and B parts with a "boom boom boom rest."
This was very informative. While covering the different types of jigs please be certain to cover the slides and slip jigs. I like "The Butterfly."
Hi there, this is great! Very nice explanation. If I could make one request, might it be possible to show a little bit of the dance? Thanks, Joan
Hi Joan, I think that's why I play musical instruments, to avoid dancing. Best wishes
@@peakfiddler ha, ha
Thanks.
Great video Mr Peak ... dont forget to say Hornpipes are mostly in a dotted rythm ... which you do play .. Thanks as always
Really ... no. A lot are, and on a lot of occasions they're not. When playing for the dance Nottingham Swing, I heavily dot/swing the tune; it fits the dance. If I were to play for "Stoke Golding Country Dance" and play 32 bar hornpipes (as per the Community Dance Manual), then I wouldn't dot or swing the hornpipe; it wouldn't fit the dance.
English Clog dancing doesn't seem to favour dotted/swung rhythms, the same with Irish step dances.
It really depends of the style of hornpipe you are playing, and the context.
@@andrewwigglesworth3030 Many thanks Andrew .. thats a great insight .. :)
I always think of the Sailor's Hornpipe when I hear the word "hornpipe."
Good morning Peak Fiddler! We were listening to your song this morning when we went looking to see a description of a hornpipe. My husband is playing it on the Fiddle this morning and we love it. However, the music is really hard to read and I was wondering if you could send us a PDF of the file? We would like to introduce it to our local Celtic group. Thanks so much for your help. Jude and Jim.
Hi there, I left a link to both the sheet music and TAB in the video description.
@@peakfiddler Thanks, but way too fuzzy to read.

What about the bluegrass hornpipes. No body can hop that fast. But no body dances to bluegrass any way.
Hi there! Is the score available somewhere? Regards
Yes, I left a link in the video description to the Notation and the TAB
I'm curious - why did you explain a hornpipe being 2 beats/measure but the sheet music is in 4? Was that a typo in the time signature? And, can you please tell me the title of the beautiful song that plays after your have faded your video, please? Thanks. I hope youtube notifies of a response!
Hi David, it's a strange anomaly, but with Hornpipes as they are played for English Ceilidh, the dancers seem to prefer a distict beat twice in the bar, whihc is why I place the enphasis on the first quaver in each group of four.
I think if I was simply playing it as a listening tune, I would pick the pace up a tad and maybe play a hornpipe more similar to a reel.
The tune that you hear on the outro, is a melody I wrote to celebrate the life of Angus Grant, fiddle player for Shooglenifty, who sadly died in 2016. I loved what he played with that band, in fact I really enjoyed the music that all of the members contributed to, a very unique and inspiring collection of musical albums.
'Tune for Angus' is featured on my second album, here is a link to spotify: open.spotify.com/album/630C6pMdd3ooqQGz1W9huZ
@@peakfiddler Thank you very much for your reply. Thanks, too, for the link to "Tune for Angus." He has surely been honored by it as it is delightful!
Interesting; the first hornpipe recording I'd ever heard was this (pretty lively) one: ruclips.net/video/DXlOZ1v2638/видео.html
That's a fiddle not a hornpipe
2:27 in until we hear the first note of music. I was curious, now I’m annoyed. Lead with it so I can see if it’s something I’m even interested in, before you go pedantic on the technical.
The guy puts up a well explained video…for free…and you’re annoyed.
Sounds like you should go to the library or local university to save some time when trying to find your information.
Great music!!!! You might want to check out @chadmiller3850. Chad, where did you get your lovely version?
