A January Afternoon

  • A January walk along the clifftop at Reculver Country Park... Skiron's northwest wind bites my melacholy soul; Helios' golden aura and her chariot makes glow yellow my windburnt face as his steeds gallop across the western sky down to the waves of Ocean; their circadian labours nearly done.
The sea still does its business, carving into the soft cliffs, undermining the clifftop. Over a thousand years ago, maybe two, the site of Reculver Towers (a.k.a. St Mary's Church) was a bustling Roman Fort called Regulbium which supplied the garrison in Canterbury via the river Wantsum. It is believed there was a promontory here which stretched hundreds of metres out to sea and disappeared from the site today.
