One of the things about the book that was especially interesting is the Korelian, and the "Overlords" were not evil. Despite being the very vision of the Devil, they were, in fact, slaves to the Overmind. Korelian, and others o his race, had to obey the Overmind in order to preserve their planet and species. If Korelian did not obey, both he and this race would be destroyed. Korelian actually liked humans, and grieved that he was the tool that was used to bring about the destruction of the planet and of humanity. Korelian appreciated and grieved the loss of humanity, and of all the other races that the Overmind had destroyed. He grieved for the loss of their essence and potential. He questioned himself whether the survival of his race was worth being the tools who were used to help destroy intelligent species the galaxy over. But in the end all he can do is to leave that single piece of music in the forever dark and empty place where the solar system had been, to act as humanity's tombstone.

The theme of this book and series are profoundly unsettling. The idea that all we ever were could simply end with humanity not even serving as a footnote, let alone out individual lives and loved ones, would be devastating. I could imagine the world devolving into something like seen in Children of Men without future generations to come along as hopelessness sweeps the species.
Nobody likes to think we may be so utterly meaningless but liking has nothing to do with it.
In the book the appearance of the Overlords wasn't connected to earlier visits but to humanity's latent and undeveloped psychic potential which would only be fully realized when the children evolved to the next level. The idea of humanity's end connected to such demonic appearing creatures reverberated back through human unconsciousness and materialized in countless religions and art works. We were essentially preprogrammed to recognize the Overlords as evil as they represented the end of humanity. Their time spent changing the earth before revealing themselves in the book was much longer if I remember properly. I thought it was several generations.

    • @bostontowny4life744
      @bostontowny4life744 Год назад +6

I don’t “like” to think it, it’s just a fact. The universe is too vast for human beings to be meaningful in anyway. You could say that life is meaningful, since it’s so rare. I’m sure there is other life out there in the cosmos, again, it’s just too big. The probability of at at least a few planets having life is higher than one might think.
But that doesn’t mean life “means” anything. Life is just a side effect of the universe, and of existence. Things that just so happen to be in the right place for other things to be created naturally.
That doesn’t mean I’m scared of death. Want to know why? Because I’ve already been through nonexistence, we all have, before we were born. All of us, prior to living, didn’t exist for a infinite amount of time. And idk about you, but I don’t remember any pain or agony. I don’t remember.. remembering. Because I didn’t exist. And all that infinite amount of time didn’t seem like anything, because I was nothing. So with that kind of mentality, you realize that death is nothing to be afraid of.

One detail the recap skipped, that was in the Childhood's End book, and think was an important point, was the 'overlords' were not evil and were in fact handicapped. Described as 'Baran Midwives', helping humanity raise to a higher evolutionary level, but incapable of achieving that themselves. While a version of humanity will live on the raised children, the overload's are an evolutionary dead end, unable to progress and can just watch others move on.

Children havent learned "humanity" yet and are still emotional creatures, thus "humanity" cant live on in them. At best "a few homo sapiens" live on, but not "humanity" ... which includes the STRUGGLE and the ACTIVE DECISION to "choose what is RIGHT over what is EASY".

I'm a bit stumped how it wouldnt be understood. Humanity has feared and preached about angels and demons. So an advanced species arrives on earth knowing full well the majority of its problems and history to know that if they reveal themselves people will just panic and respond like wild animals. So they are coached, mentored and assisted with kindness to clean up the planet - which is based on a clean and safe alternative power source. With wars and disease a thing of the past, humanity can advance as a species...which always presents in offspring. Then the aliens reveal themselves after for their true appearance and its time for the children to take their rightful place in the stars.

@@kenyatahill4056 More accurately it is how unevolved human minds perceived psychically perceived the end of the species as they knew it and assigned that fear to the image which would be its harbinger, the Overlords. The Overmind, which many consider "God" is if anything the true antagonist here. The higher consciousness of the universe harvests species simply to propagate itself with zero care for the species themselves other than their need to survive to the evolution point. The Overlords, whom the book explains are unable to make that jump, have enormously long lifespans and are used by the Overmind to assist in the final elevation of the generation which shall move forward while all that came before is lost. It is actually the Overlords who have compassion for and feel sympathy for the species they are sent to oversee. They interfere with individuals on several occasions for individual human's benefits. They work to make the world a utopia to ease life for the final generations of the species.
In truth, if this story is that of the anti Christ and judgement day then God is definitively the bad guy. There is no judgement day, everyone but the last generation is destroyed with nothing remaining. No afterlife, no memories. Only the last generation moves forward who are so far from human as to no longer remotely relate.

One of our assignments before we got to the reveal was to write a paper hypothesizing about the appearance of the Overlords and why they remained hidden. I still remember my hypothesis that the Overlords would simply be humans and the reason for the secrecy was all of humanity would never simply bow down and obey other humans. Only by conditioning humanity for generations to be docile could the Overlords reveal themselves and maintain control over earth's population. In the book the secrecy period lasted several generations I believe.

Of course not all of us are all those things. We will be lucky if humanity is still around in the next 100 years. We are close to blowing ourselves up! The series went nowhere and the novella Childhood's End wasn't some moralistic religious dogma tract but a reasonable cautionary tale about attaching superstition to the fact that the universe does not "care" about what any individual or species does or feels. It's time to grow up. It is Clarke's retort to overly moralistic and emotional stories like The Day the Earth Stood Still.

Great book - and an ending that promises more ... and is highly frightening.
Why does our children need to rise to a higher plane - leaving us behind?
I don’t accept the premise, that space travel is not suited for mankind. So, the Overlords DID betray us, and we WERE warned because of the ancient scripts depicting the return of the Devil.
I know, many takes a positive spin on our children becoming demigods … but MY initial thought was: in service of WHO? Because they are meant to service (is my cynical interpretation).
Scary … and to think a novel from 1953 can still excite and create so many emotions, is a tribute to one of the Masters of Sci-fi: Arthur C. Clarke.
