Curran: Pats want 'massive amount', potentially 'upwards of five' 1st-round picks for 3rd overall

- Tom E. Curran and Phil Perry join Trenni Casey on Arbella Early Edition to discuss the latest rumors and reports about what the Patriots are planning to do with third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Curran reiterates previous reporting on his part that the team would be seeking more than three first-round picks as compensation and speculates that the team may be looking for upwards of five first-rounders. Is this a sign the team is fully sold on one or more of the QBs at the top of this year's class and aren't seriously interested in trading back at all? The group debate all of this and more.
5 picks is not gonna happen. Take QB that comes to you at 3 and try and build around him. Phil is right. The mental gymnastics isn’t necessary.
I think that is the point. Too big for any team to spend
@@wickeddoughboyjaydunn3652 exactly and if a team is willing to spent that ammount even better. If vikings want it im fine with 3 first rounders and JJ :D
It's not mental gymnastics it's smart you trade back and givr your self the capital to get another QB or player
Agreed 💯
@@xDawhite any trade that involves Jefferson I’m all for
Thank you Phil--“if you don’t have the QB, you have nothing”. Number 3 gives you the best chance. In a different draft, Maye, and Daniels would be number 1s. Get a guy and start his training. Play him next year.
What the fuck are they smoking in Foxboro?
Mane I said the same thing 😅😂😂😂😂. Probably some high dimensional Crack 😂
Crappy mids from a dispensary 😂😂
😂😂😂
Sounds methy to me
Lol, 5 #1's 😂😂
Can't wait for this draft to be over! Take the Q.b and let's go!
We need picks this year.
Look Maye can make every throw but needs a year or 2 of work. Add play makers and o-line later in the draft and next year. This is a 3 year rebuild at best, accept that.
Kills me that some fans aren’t this patient like you want to be great again it takes time
I’m taking Drake Maye
The Patriots are picking either Maye or Daniels at 3 they know nobody is going to give them 5 1st-round picks. And if a team is dumb enough to give up 5 picks, then guess what? The Patriots finesse that team with multiple picks. It's a win-win regardless for the Pats
I agree but if they do trade down I think it means they like another guy like JJ , penix or nix ect but that could be risky . High reward is if you get your QB and a WR or Tackle in the same round
@richschneiderman613 I see the Pats going with Alt and JJ or Rome and Penix in the 1st if they traded back, but I think they stay put at 3.
If they get it it's the Herschel Walker deal the Cowboys used to get Super Bowls.
5 first rounders hell yeah in a heart beat
3 firsts have precedent.. 5 is doubtful
That should tell you that they believe in maye
No one is going to give 4 first rounders for the 3rd overall pick. If a player was worth that much, patriots would stay put
I think they should trade the 3rd pick for the 199th pick. Last time they had the 199th pick they won for 20 years.
They could have the #199 pick for the next 600 years and they still would not find another Tom Brady
Why? They could just trade their 6th round top pick to move back to 199. Why the hell would they trade their 3rd overall for 199 🤦♂️
18 years. But it was fun.
Brady ain't there dude!
All hail the king TB12
Someone must have just watched Draft Day.
Currans back has to be getting sore, carrying all that water has to be tough
5 is ridiculous.
I’ll lower the picks and just grab Justin Jefferson
@@dionreed7325so he can either leave after next year in free agency or take the biggest contract in WR history so the team can’t sign anyone else? Btw the guy is a legit top 3 WR no doubt
@@tonytheg6612 Sad Kirk got hurt. Started the whole program to square 2. Vikes would have made it to SF after the fumbled losses in the beginning. Now, ouch.
I think they are going to draft a qb. If someone actually offers 5 first round picks, how do you say no to that lol.
Phil and his opinions give me hope I will be on TV one day
I've always been of the view the Pats should take a QB with the 3rd pick (ideally Drake Maye). However, if a team offers you 5 first round picks, then you absolutely trade out and take the haul. That is a generational haul and you can rebuild the offensive & defensive line. Then you draft a QB next year (likely with another high pick) and they are in a great situation like the 49ers and Purdy.
And if you miss on those players you are garbage for the next 5 years whilst the guy you could have took may be leading another franchise to the playoffs every year
@@jaisriram295you still don’t pass up FIVE 1st round picks. These QB’s could be busts
Keep the pick but if we are offered 5 1st round picks you have to take it. Not 3 from the Vikings then we will be in the same position they are in, praying someone will trade with us so we can get a top tier QB.
You'd have to be INSANE to not take 4-5 first round picks over Drake Maye. The desperation for a qb savior could be their own undoing.
I like the way she calls him "Curran." lol.
4 or 5 firsts are what you get when you absolutely don't want to sell
🎯
Just four 1st rd draft picks (if it was Minnesota) would allow NE to have 2 picks in 2024s 1st rd , 2025s, and 2026's 1st rd as well. With that kind of draft capital possibly becoming available....NE better LOVE the QB options that drop to them at #3. That's the kind of draft future that could change a franchise's next decade (if managed well). Nevermind five 1st, 🤯🤯 !
Five firsts? Are they high?
No they are not. If you want to move up this is what is going to take.
@@dasilvakemosabe2562 Then I assume they don't want to trade the pick, which is fine. Any GM giving up five firsts for the third rookie QB off the board deserves to lose their job.
That’s the point no one is gonna trade that much and if someone bites on it then go for it !
It is lying season.
@@coloradoterroir8736how many first rounds would you give for a franchise qb
Id be fine with the minnesota deal for 11, 23 and a next years first. Rome at 11, penix at 23 with 2 first rd picks next year thats my dream scenerio
Mine, too, but Odunze might not make it to 11.😉
Penix even with his injury history will be long gone by pick #23
This is the most you’ll get from Minnesota. Remember that 11 and 23 are worth more than future 1st rounders.
The poll is proof people don't understand. It's all about the evaluation, and what we "think" means nothing. Less than nothing. That's it. All this burning of mental calories is nice. Fun. A waste of time.
Didn't a team trade their whole draft for Ricky Williams and didn't that go up in smoke? 😬
as they should.
NEW ENGLAND SMART PICKS WOULD BE OT JOE ALT 6'8" 322LBS. TYLER GUYTON 6'7 328LBS AND QB JOE MILTON 6'5" 236LBS ROCKET ARM
Five firsts as a talking point = 3 firsts and a good player in reality.
Why do people have this thought in their heads that you can just grab any QB and throw him in there? If it was that simple nobody would be offering 3 or 4 first round picks for a projected franchise QB.
So the Boston sports media has already set the Drake Maye or bust narrative. If Daniels or another quarterback is drafted or a trade down is done in order to fill the glaring talent deficiencies along the entire roster, Mayo is immediately on the 'hot seat' before he's even coached a game.
One thing is always a constant in the NFL Draft: the "next big thing" at quarterback exists EVERY year. Phil Perry, as knowledgeable he is, is trying to sell HIS favorite and it's taking hold throughout the Boston sports media landscape.
When Maye is out there throwing the most stupifying interceptions, Perry will point the finger at everything else besides his shoddy prognostications.
5 first rounders?! 😂 Last I checked Mike Ditka isn’t in the league willing to give up an entire draft worth of picks to move up. This is the sort of thing that makes me feel like its amateur hour with Mayo.
7:59 this point concerns me. Elliot was high on the wrong guy(s) in the 2018 draft. Passing on Lamar and Josh Allen in favor of Baker. All the rumors of him being high on JJMC over Maye/Daniels, history doesn’t repeat but it rhymes.
No one knows if the favored draft QBs will work out or not. That's a fact. There's a reasonable chance you have a franchise QB at no.3. You have to take the QB.
5 would do it 😂
Never Ever get close to this, especially since the Trey Lance fiasco. If buyers know you're out on Maye, McCarthy, Daniels you can kick rocks, we'll deal with Arizona or the Chargers. If you want to stock the cupboard get realistic.
That’s nonsense 3 -1st rd picks at best and if they get that they absolutely have to take it
I think it will happen we seen teams in the past pull off these trades for a player, look at Denver etc inflation prices for picks and players are higher than ever and someone will met the demand like people do everyday as long as you can prove you can pay it nothing changes. We know for weeks many teams have expressed interest in moving up including the Vikings, Raiders, and Giant's someone will crack and make the trade Elliot Wolf wants.
Thank god they should!!! Big pick for anyone!
If anything we should trade down in the 2nd round. At pick 3 we need to take a shot on this quarterback class this class is too great. If he’s not ready then sit him this year and use next year to go all in in this qb
1 first round pick vs 4 first round picks? You gotta take 4.
I will absolutely laugh like a little girl if after all this posturing by the Patriots, they end up selecting McCarthy at #3 😅
Look Michael Pratt Tulane and Joe Minton are sleepers we could get 6 2nd round picks this year a first next year plus are own if they do it right. The second round is loaded with talent. WE could get 4 offensive picks ...QB TE. T. 2 WR. Plus 2 Defense players too. If they only would listen to me. 1st round picks can be Deceiving. Look at the 2000. Draft. What Happened At 199. 😊. 6X SUPER BOWL RINGS CHAMPIONSHIP 💍. Just Remonising. 6x . Now You Know The Rest Of The Story. Go Patriots.
Bahahahaha! They're delusional. I'd give up the #1 pick with a generational QB for 5 picks. 3 is what Miami got for their 3rd a few years ago, should be happy with that.
If the rumor is true (what are the odds), that doesn't make them 'delusional'; it means they want to keep the pick, duh.
That's about right ! Cards at #4 want the vikings 2 #1's this year & a #1 & #3 in 2025 .
John Rhys Plumlee from Central Florida might be a late round steal. He reminds me of Russell Wilson when he was coming out of Wisconsin.
5! That’s what I’m talking about ! 4 at the minimum 😂 let’s you know how my pats feel about that third pick 😮wow!
The only way to win is to get a franchise quarterback, build around him afterwards
I'll take 3 first and swap a 7th rounder for a 4th or something. That's plenty.
I hope whatever Eliot Wolf decides to do works. I hope that he doesn't follow the emotion of the earnest but relatively clueless fanbase and listens to his scouts! The scouts are hired by the Patriots to follow prospective draft picks to define their football careers and predict their perspective performance potential. Far beyond simple highlight films that loudmouths like Tony Massarotti or the like ever see and study.
Three first two seconds
Basically, drafting anyone is a 100% gamble.
I love the thought of getting a haul for the pick but what if Maye is the next John Elway. Could you live with yourself? The Pats could have had Dan Marino in 1983 and ended up with Eason. Oofah!!!!! I love Malik Naybors. He may end up being the best and most productive player from this draft but we need a QB. Can we trade #3 and still come away with a top QB and receiver. That would be paramount.
Good luck with that
All he is saying is that is what it would take for them to trade the pick
I thought a team isnt allowed to trade more than 3 years picks 😂
Haha so in other words patriots are drafting maye at #3 which we knew all along. Next
San Francisco laid an egg. Probably should stay away from the poker table. Miami majorly capitalized turning that deal into Jaylen Waddle, Tyreek Hill and Bradley Chubb. Moving forward, does it matter who's available at 3 for the Pats to consider trading the pick for a bag/haul. I like Maye and Daniels. Do the Patriots favor one or the other?
Someone's delusional. But a trade for picks isn't. The Patriots need six-seven starters today. And that's just on offense. QB is only one of them. Store picks, bite the bullet and suck again next year. It's a process. Be patient.
Thinking too deep. Just draft a qb at 3, if neither are available, draft MHJ.
Trade with Vikings if they’re hot for JJ and they still get Drake at number 4 and another first rounder for an excellent receiver
Id trade it for the 3 - 1st round picks (with Minnesota - . And an added 3rd rounder in (25)
Remember though this all depends on what Washington is doing.
Too much risk.. just take a QB at 3 and deal with team building with salary cap
Make the trade patriots need more than just a Qb 🤨
No...every team needs a franchise QB
I keep thinking back to that late Dec kick that Ryland made to beat the Broncos, and in essentially give Washington the 2nd pick in the draft instead of us. He couldn't make a kick to save his life prior to that. But when it came time to win a meaningless game and move us down one spot in the draft, that useless POS drilled it 😞
who would give even 4 first round picks nevermind 5?
I keep trying to tell people a “Franchise QB” could literally change the course of your entire franchise instantly yea we need 5 1st rounders plus some players lol and even then if he is a franchise QB there’s no price someone can pay pick #3 is priceless
Might as well just say we aint trading.
2 first round n JJ is fair anything else is unacceptable.
If they value #3 that much, then why aren’t they just taking the QB they want? Reason is they really want Marvin Harrison Jr. and know any QB they take is going to struggle without a better supporting cast.
Vikings will not offer more than three 1st round picks - and if I’m them, I offer #11, and then 1st rounds picks in the next two years. Vikings keep #23 and continue to build their defense. If a team wants #11 and #23 in the deal? Then that 1st in 2025 becomes negotiable.
I’d rather the Vikings draft Maye, but would be more than happy if we wait until #11 and see if McCarthy is still there or just take Penix Jr.
Hybrid solution. Take the QB this year and sit him year one. Possibly in the top 5 to draft next year. Trade that pick for a haul.
You're cooking with gas here, people need to realize whichever we swing this, it's a multiyear rebuild...take the QB now, we're probably going to be in the top5-top7 picks for next year, barring any crazy thing happening
MHJ or trade. Really good QB class. We'll still get a guy no doubt.
Take Maye.
What their trying to tell you Tom is it isn't happening their taking a QB. They want to build around a QB wich is how you build your team Tom. That's how you get the most out of today's QB Tom. Maye or Daniels are worth taking the risk on was nd a rookie QB contrat is always good.
And do what at Qb Jacoby and god forbid Bailey zappe??
We dont need a QB this year. We need infrastructure to fit a QB in
Please don't trade down. Sick of that and it's done nothing for us. Ok it's different coaching bla bla. I wouldn't make the trade for 4 first rounders NO TY.. I agree with Phil 1000% Draft the QB at 3 Pleaseeeeeee..
Ha. Don't even bother "reporting" this. You're not getting that. Enjoy busting Maye with the trash roster
If yall give us 4 1st rounders we can talk simple
Trade with the Vikings and take McCarthy at 11, take Brian Thomas at 23, if he’s there in the 2nd round take Keon Coleman then find a tight end in the 3rd, work on the offensive line next year
I would argue that trading down would be the easiest thing for Wolf to do Tom. Not having the balls to take the chance on franchise QB is weak Tom.
The patriots should trade down with Minnesota for 3 first rd picks. The patriots can still get a qb at 11
I don’t know what more hilarious, the entire staff doesn’t know the NFL rules and you can’t trade more than three 1st round picks for ANY kind of trade OR Mayo and the Patriots don’t know this rule. BB is gone for 3 months and this is already turning into a clown show.
If 80% of GM's around the league think Drake Maye would be #1 in almost every other draft year, then you have to get a pick package, which is comeserate with the value of the first overall pick.
Take Harrison at three and try and trade back into the 1st for the best QB in this class, Michael Penix jr
Yeah let's draft No Knees Penix 😂
Mayonnaise and Kraft are in over their heads
To drop all the way to #11?
#11, #23, #108, 2025 1st & 2025 3rd at a minimum.
Lol 5 picks go ahead and take drake and let him get absolutely destroyed mentally and physically him and mac jones can buy a house together
go for quality-not quanity.all your picks are high.just stay where yo are,get a franchise quarterback-use toyr brains and don't trade down!
I'm on team Perry. Draft Drake Maye at 3.
Somebody needs to remind them they have the 3rd pick not the 1st. They need to stop smoking that crack.
All this BB sucks drafting.....who handled the salary cap better since free agency?????? NOBODY!
If you don't have a good qb you can't win much
Laughable...there's five to six QB's in this draft that could start.
Sorry but people that think trading the 3rd pick is a good idea are moronic...you are nothing without a franchise QB and that draft capital you would get for that pick are still just lottery tickets and could all be busts as well..people acting like trading back means the players you select are guarantees 😂😂😂
You people have lost your mind. Where do you think this stuff up at the bar half drunk?
Marvin jr.
Curran needs to get off this " Trade pick crap", the team is in no position ,at QB to pass on a top 3 QB. If you can get a potential trade for the #34, to get more picks, cool, but use your #3. The patriots picks are in tough spots, because the top 25 players are going to fly off the board quickly. Guess we'll see..
That's insane.Even Brady's not worth that. I'm in No 1st for five years. They would be in the cellar with Brady
