I need to say. The last castle is AWESOME! I build a few walls and "castles" myself in Conan Exiles. But seeing these make me feel like i spent hours building garbage. Impressive!
This is pretty awesome! Makes me kind of wish for a mod or gameplay mode for Conan Exiles which is more like realistic siege mechanics! A heavy nerf to how far you can climb, some additions like siege towers and such... could be fun!
A couple sloping inverted walls, some steel support beams from Pythags mod, reinforced fences used as short walls, and BAM!!! you have a fully functional machicolation. Add a crenelated wall on the wall side of the box you just built, and you can attach a Siege Cauldron.
I literally just bought this game the other day and was going to try to make a Shad approved castle in it. Stayed up until 2am playing it and then woke up to this.
There is an old strategy game "Stronghold HD" where you can build cool castles and siege other lord's castles. Work perfectly on modern OS and in widescreen! Old but gold!
I think that the weird thing about a lot of Dark Souls fortresses is that they aren't necessarily that defensible, they're just filled with devious traps once an attacker gets inside. Many of them are actually terrible for keeping people out, and would be terrible to defend because of the aforementioned murderous traps (think about how many enemies you can get environmental kills on in these places). The only one that comes to my mind as a place that's an actual castle with the intention of defending from intrusion, rather than killing anyone who sets foot within, is Lothric Castle. Anor Londo is a bit of a unique case. It doesn't have much in the way of defenses or death traps, but it doesn't necessarily need them, since it's so high above its surroundings that access can only be provided by flight or magic. Cainhurst Castle (yes I'm including Bloodborne), while resembling a normal castle, is bizarre in that _there is no logical way to access the throne room._ Seriously. Go to the Cainhurst throne room, and try to find any way for the inhabitants to leave, or for an invading army that wouldn't want to walk on slippery roof tops to get in.
If you look at Lordran as a whole, as from the view at Firelink, you can see the entire region consists of a series of ringed cities tiered uphill toward Anor Londo, with Sen's Fortress merely being the final checkpoint. The scale is such that the entire Darkroot Forest is almost just a keepside garden to Anor Londo. In theory you could have such a fort as Sen's at every entrance to the next tier, and counterattacks could be launched from one ring to another. Anor Londo itself was originally accessible by foot directly from Sen's, as the bricked-in gateway arch past the Iron Golem indicates.
this is amazing, i love that second castle, it looks fantastic! there are so many interesting places like that to build in this game, i tend to suffer from both abundance of choice and indecision. also your excitement for the subject is infectious, as someone else said, and it got me excited to hop back in the game today (i was looking around online for what other people thought were good places to build, after spending three hours yesterday running around).
Shad, why do you remind me more and more of Rogal Dorn of the Imperial Fists? I mean, damn, I can imagine someone asking Shad to build a treehouse for their kid and it would STILL be the most fortified treehouse on Earth.
Dividing by zero is actually easy. You just pour everything you have into zero piles, which in one pile for each item. Or in math terms: 3 / 0 = 1 + 1 + 1

As a medieval enthusiast I thought you might enjoy this excerpt from LIFE IN A MEDIEVAL CITY by Francis and Joseph Gies. "Besides these peacetime calamities, there is always the possibility of war. Here at least people in the city enjoy an advantage over the peasants in the villages. When the feudal army rides, is sets fire to everything it cannot carry off, but the walls of a city like Troyes are nearly always proof against such depredations. The besieging army of Hugo of La Marche and Peter of Brittany was easily held at bay outside of Troyes in 1230. Even an enemy armed with a formidable array of siege engines and missile weapons has a difficult time breaking into a walled city. A feudal army can rarely be kept in the field longer than a month or two. The military obligations of vassals does not extend further, and mercenary troops are too expensive for any but a very wealthy prince bent on a highly important objective, such as a Crusade. Ordinarily three attacker must within the limits of a short campaign muster either an overwhelming assault force to scale the walls at many points simultaneously, or a powerful enough battery of siege engines to knock down walls or gates. He has a third alternative, of the ground is favorable, and if the defense is insufficiently alert: mining. "The overwhelming assault force may prevail when the stronghold under attack is a castle with a weak garrison. A tightly-packed city of ten thousand citizens, like Troyes, is unlikely to succumb even to a very large storming party, because there are enough men to night and day to keep an alert guard at every point of theb two-thousand-yard rampart. When the assault force approaches, under cover of a "castle," or movable wooden platform, to fill in the ditch around the walls and plant scaling ladders, the garrison can quickly concentrate at the threatened point or points. Lofty walls, and especially round towers, give the defenders all the advantage in the contest of arrows, bolts, and missiles. Combustibles can be flung down on the attackers "castles, and even if some of the storming party gains a foothold on the wall, they can be isolated by the fire from the neighboring towers, for the space in front of the walls is always kept clear of any cover. The towers project, so that they can bring flanking fire to bear on attackers scaling the wall. "The old-fashioned Roman siege engines have been much improved. The Romans employed only tension and torsion as motive power. Medieval military engineers have added the counterweight, which provides both more power and greater accuracy. A trebuchet, or counterweight engine, consists of a long firing pole balanced on a pivot, or cross-pole, in turn mounted on a pair of uprights. The firing pole is not set on its mid-point, but on a point about a quarter from its butt end, which is faced toward the enemy. The long end is pulled down, the missile placed in a cavity or sling, and secured by a wooden catch worked by a winch, while the butt end is loaded with wedge shaped weights of iron or stone. When the catch is released, the counterweight drops, sending the missile flying. On more sophisticated models, the counterweight can be moved closer or father from the pivot, increasing our decreasing the range. A couple of zeroing- in shots permit a good engineer to fire with considerable accuracy. The missile is ordinarily a heavy stone, though variants include combustible materials and occasionally the heads of enemies. Some military experts prefer a simpler model of counterweight engine, worked by ropes pulled down by men. This is inferior in range and accuracy, but it has the advantage of being highly maneuverable, so that several may be brought to bear on a single weak point in the enemy's defenses. "Artillery, however, is no monopoly of the archers m attackers. In the crypts of the towers of Troyes' ramparts, a great number of dismantled engines stand ready for assembly, together with a spot of stone ammunition. "How effective catapult artillery is against a stone wall depends on the wall. Some old walls, made of a thin shell of rough-cut stone covering an earth core, can be battered to pieces. But a good modern wall, laid in even courses locked into a rubble core, can defy all the engines an enemy can bring to bear, as has been repeatedly demonstrated by the redoubtable though weakly garrisoned Crusader forts in Syria. "The attackers third alternative, mining, is the most promising, provided soft ground can be found. Against a castle it is particularly effective, because the mine can be driven under either a Sexton m section of the wall or under the main keep. No explosive involved-the mine is "discharged" simply by seeing fire to three timbering which supports the mines roof. As the timber burns , the ground wire m who m above collapses. At one siege in Syria the Saracen engineers first undermined and collapsed a tower in the curtain wall. But the garrison, composed of Knights of St. John, successfully fought off the subsequent assault and trees m reestablished the barricade in the rubble of the tower. The Saracens then dug a mine into the interior of the castle, directly under the keep, and invited the Franks to send their own engineers to inspect it. When the Frankish engineers reported back that the discard m discharge of the mine would cause the certain collapse of the keep, the Knights agreed to surrender on terms- matching out and abandoning the castle to the Saracens.

by far the best part of this whole video beyond the amazing castle designs, is how much joy Shad gets out of talking about castles. now i know what happiness sounds like.
Fun fact to stop people from climbing out of your murder hole, there are torches that can cause hypothermia making you take a constant tick of damage. While being damaged you cannot climb, using enough of these torches you can overwhelm any level of cold resistance as well. Only what four or five years late? Totally not dumping on the comments.
Actually if you read around then you learn that the Wheel of Pain was actually a mill designed to use manpower rather than wind or water. Also as a funny note they used a real one, but Arnold had beefed up to such a ridiculous level for the movie that they had to push against him in order to make it look like he was struggling at all. Also be careful Shad, this game has a tech that lets you make sapper bombs. It's about halfway up the levels but it can and will completely destroy a wall. Remember to use and lock your chests. Also, archers on the inside, over the ground and with fences around and a roof overhead can only be hit with ranged weapons. A few of them with crossfiring arcs and the inside is hell on earth to any invader.
Shad, I love the way you exclaimed about the draw bridge lol, and i loved the presentation of your castles and building skills. I now have a few good ideas on how I want to build my kingdom in Conan Exiles. Thank you much for your video.
got into this game recently, just started incorporating circular buildings into my builds- working on that one empty platform in the mounds of the dead in my solo world. a bit small, but a great spot for me to learn how to make taller structures.
@Shadiversity, they just used the same system used in rust. Not that it had something new to it, but seeing the time frame during which it was built, they clearly took inspiration from rust. You should try rust as, many building tips will allow you to us, in some strange forms, actual castle design. With slight modifications for guns, but castle desigs nontheless, with murderholes that works and whatever you can build with your own skills. but it's nice to have a proper introduction to this game we hear so much about while not seeing much.
@@petrino not all that impossible. Instead of building tall, find big flat plateau and build wide. The avatar would run out of time before being able to kill a third of the base. Plus if you have shield.
Bought this game recently. And I must say, for building and creating castles, homes, villages and other fantasy-like structures it is probably the best game currently. Game gives so much freedom in making what you want and how you want. And the lore is amazing too, nice addition to make the world more believable and cosy.
It's completely because of you Shad that I could point out several mistakes in the castles you made and also kinda your fault for making them in such positions and ways
Your designs are very inspiring. Love it when you nerd out about your custom created castles in any given game. What mod are you referring to in regards to building your 3rd castle?
the last really castle looks impressive. I bet it would take *ages* to gather all the resources if you want to build that thing without cheats (Admin mode or how it is called)
for the 2nd castle isent it a bit of a problem that the enemy can simply knock out the bridges between the 3 rocks and the stairs out of the first and leave a tiny garrison to continue the siege for how ever long it takes. After all being build on rocks the defenders have no well. Also its impossible for the defenders to sally forth to break any siege.
This reminds me of building castles/bases in rust. The rules are a bit different from real life, but it is always cool seeing how people counters raiding methods, and your castle design videos definitely gave me some useful ideas. Best example i can think of was back when people where building fins perpendicular to the wall to prevent ladder raiding.
Those later crenelations you spoke of, have spikes that prevent climbers from climbing over walls, also allow for a Cauldron of oil to be attached to it.
watching this while playing Space Engineers and thought, Why not build a castle on the moon? not as practical because spaceships, but it would look cool. Now I just have to find a good piece of terrain to build it on. And maybe a forge class ship to make the materials for it.
might make a spaceship castle once this one is done, going to take a while though since I'm doing it in survival mode. right now I'm building my Forge class ship while fighting off various threats (meteor storms, rogue drones, pirates etc.) and ironing out bugs with the mods I have installed. kinda difficult when the game crashes every 30 mins or so. I think I have which one is causing it but it's also one of the core mods I want to use for the Forge ship, namely the reactor to power the thing. This will probably be one of the biggest ships, if not The biggest, I've built in survival once complete.
I notice that the donjon at 21:00 to 21:50 is lit by luminaires made of large bowls of flaming fuel suspended about two feet below a wood ceiling. About a half hour or so after lighting those in a real building, the ceiling would catch fire. Before that, however, you would have evacuated the building because there are no vents and the rooms would be filled with smoke and carbon monoxide.
the castle at 11:30 is my favorite for sure- no one is even gonna be able to touch that if you place a trebuchet or two and up the material... not to mention you break one of the bridges and they can't get any further no matter what. I build a few walls and "castles" myself in Conan Exiles. But seeing these make me feel like i spent hours building garbage.
Impressive!
Wow. You are really good at this. I bet you rock at Minecraft.
Shad's excitement is infectious.
This is pretty awesome! Makes me kind of wish for a mod or gameplay mode for Conan Exiles which is more like realistic siege mechanics! A heavy nerf to how far you can climb, some additions like siege towers and such... could be fun!
...No machicolations? 0/10 to this game!
A couple sloping inverted walls, some steel support beams from Pythags mod, reinforced fences used as short walls, and BAM!!! you have a fully functional machicolation.
Add a crenelated wall on the wall side of the box you just built, and you can attach a Siege Cauldron.
id love to see an updated video here with all the dlc's and additions to the game
Shad, I'm stealing some (let's face it, ALL) of these designs for my play through
"Putting a castle in the middle of nowhere is kind of useless"
*chuckles in Castle Houska*
I literally just bought this game the other day and was going to try to make a Shad approved castle in it. Stayed up until 2am playing it and then woke up to this.
There is an old strategy game "Stronghold HD" where you can build cool castles and siege other lord's castles.
Work perfectly on modern OS and in widescreen!
Old but gold!
I love how you introduce your builds. Concept talk -> nice flyby views -> the reveal. You can really tell you work on your craft.
Absolutely astonishing Castles!
You are an artist!
Hey shad, have you ever considered anlysing dark souls keeps, castless and forts? Or have I just missed those videos?
Sen's Fortress...
I think Sen's Fortress speaks for itself. The hundreds of corpses of my character that litter it's halls are a testament to it's defensive power.
Please! Or aldia's keep, drangleic castle, forest of fallen giants' fortress, lothric, eleum loyce, or anor londo!
Pls do more of this series. Just build castle and explain the effectiveness and functional of the castle in this game
Arif Aiman
Definitely. :)
"One of the most valuable resources in this game is actually the NPCs"
Human resources?
Shad, why do you remind me more and more of Rogal Dorn of the Imperial Fists?
I mean, damn, I can imagine someone asking Shad to build a treehouse for their kid and it would STILL be the most fortified treehouse on Earth.
Void Walker *Finds a mountain*
I am fortifying this position with
MACHICOLATIOOOOOOOONS
Now i want shad to build an actual house... like a castle.
"I am the grrates treehouse architect in the galaxy. Bring me my tools, and 12,000 laborers."
Loved watching your Exiles building skills increase with each castle.
Shad Fact: Shad is the only person to successfully divide by 0.
Dividing by zero is actually easy. You just pour everything you have into zero piles, which in one pile for each item. Or in math terms: 3 / 0 = 1 + 1 + 1
Dividing and multiplying by zero all end the same, = 0
It goes to infinity and beyond.
If is basically turning a certain quantity of items into 0 items, easy, just destroy them
That would be multiplying by 0
HBO: "A main keep? .... give me 50 designers, a rendering farm, and six months"
Shad: "Pfff.... give me a week on a gaming computer, and I'll throw in the decorations for free"
but shad! the walls arent thick enough! no machiculatioooooooooooooonsuh! lol game limitations and whatnot but thats a really awesome castle, i should give the game another go now that its out of ea
Man, you're really good at this.
13:00 Clearly somebody didn't apply for his permit to crenelate
Castle building Knowledge Increased.. Thanks shad
I saw in that commercial video game swords and I saw an elite sword. Shad needs to do a video about it NOW!!!
ima share this with vintage beef as hes quite the builder in this game and may enjoy this video (and he might make a realy awesome castle with an amazing interior)
DO IT! JUST! DO IT!
Awsum! I'm normally much more into the gameplay than the building, but after I have seen your castles, I am so inspired now to build an awesome castle in my Conan adventure 👍
Long life his Majesty King Shad!
And his beautiful bride (may god give her peace) that horse he decapitated.
Thanks to your video i have redesign my castle taking it down 5k blocks an building it up new again with a great design following the layout of the rock formation im on which is on a cliff face an building to the line the circle tip has come in handy thank you very much i just started playing this game on the weekend and am loving it
What! No Machicolations? Outrageous.
by far the best part of this whole video beyond the amazing castle designs, is how much joy Shad gets out of talking about castles. now i know what happiness sounds like.
The wheel-thing in the movie was meant to be a millstone. But I think they got halfway though building it and decided enough was enough.
Finally. This game is getting more love. One of my favorite RUclipsrs is playing it. Thank God Shad found this work of art.
Those are great looking castles! I loved how you started matching the castle to the terrain.
Holy crap just asked for a video in this a few days ago and here we are, Love you Shad!
11:03 you could also potentialy put a murder hole under the bridge not sure how practical it would be though
i love seeing you make castles in games! always impressed at what you make.
Shad, I love the way you exclaimed about the draw bridge lol, and i loved the presentation of your castles and building skills. I now have a few good ideas on how I want to build my kingdom in Conan Exiles. Thank you much for your video.
But Shad... WHAT ABOUT DRAGONS??
and also I couldn’t help but notice the absence of machicolations!!
there are dragons actaully.
got into this game recently, just started incorporating circular buildings into my builds- working on that one empty platform in the mounds of the dead in my solo world. a bit small, but a great spot for me to learn how to make taller structures.
The more I watch about castles from you, the more I want to redesign the castles I'm trying to make.
Thats correct, but Medieval Engineers has something better, they got MACHICOLATIONS!
U don't have to go threw each tower no just go to main cuz u can climb up the sides
ok... now i wanna see you fortify a castle specifically against the avatars.
Petrino impossible
i know. i still wanna see him try.
Same here, maybe the students are finally surpassing the master?
I need more videos like this. Conan exiles has become my game of choice lately, and I was trying to find inspiration. Thanks Shad!!!
Your designs are very inspiring. Love it when you nerd out about your custom created castles in any given game.
What mod are you referring to in regards to building your 3rd castle?
These videos are one of the primary reasons i watch your vids, hope to see more!
Loved that second castle, Shad!👍👍😁
I can build anything as long as I have a design. The creative design is where I fall flat. You sir have both. Good Job!
the last really castle looks impressive. I bet it would take *ages* to gather all the resources if you want to build that thing without cheats (Admin mode or how it is called)
Use doors for it instead of walls
for the 2nd castle isent it a bit of a problem that the enemy can simply knock out the bridges between the 3 rocks and the stairs out of the first and leave a tiny garrison to continue the siege for how ever long it takes. After all being build on rocks the defenders have no well. Also its impossible for the defenders to sally forth to break any siege.
I don't even play half the games you have, I'm just here to learn about castles.
This reminds me of building castles/bases in rust. The rules are a bit different from real life, but it is always cool seeing how people counters raiding methods, and your castle design videos definitely gave me some useful ideas.
Best example i can think of was back when people where building fins perpendicular to the wall to prevent ladder raiding.
i love the conclusion at the end with the music xD
Those later crenelations you spoke of, have spikes that prevent climbers from climbing over walls, also allow for a Cauldron of oil to be attached to it.
watching this while playing Space Engineers and thought, Why not build a castle on the moon? not as practical because spaceships, but it would look cool. Now I just have to find a good piece of terrain to build it on. And maybe a forge class ship to make the materials for it.
what about a floating spaceship castle that has towers sticking out in all 6 directions with no up XD
might make a spaceship castle once this one is done, going to take a while though since I'm doing it in survival mode. right now I'm building my Forge class ship while fighting off various threats (meteor storms, rogue drones, pirates etc.) and ironing out bugs with the mods I have installed. kinda difficult when the game crashes every 30 mins or so. I think I have which one is causing it but it's also one of the core mods I want to use for the Forge ship, namely the reactor to power the thing. This will probably be one of the biggest ships, if not The biggest, I've built in survival once complete.
Dunbant I hope you’re able to do this... it sounds awesome!
Second castle is my fav too
It's officially been a year since you've uploaded this! Have you kept up with the game and designed any new forts in the other biomes?
Shadiversity! Great to see another video! I'd be elated if you'd do a review of the sword fights in Willow the movie. (1988)
the castle at 11:30 is my favorite for sure- no one is even gonna be able to touch that if you place a trebuchet or two and up the material... not to mention you break one of the bridges and they can't get any further no matter what.
Not only that but it truly looks like it belongs in the Conan universe
Great vid again sir I do have to say I think your castle episodes are my favorite ones I think I mite have to rewatch the Honor Guard vid again and get on sum Minecraft...oh yeah you know what's a commin next
I'm so happy to see I'm not the only one who's trying to blend my builds in with the terrain. My first stronghold I built in Conan was actually pretty huge. It started with a tower, and in the end it started to look like a little city :-) Maybe I'll use some of your ideas in the build I'm currently working on. Great job!
That looked so good I wanna play the game myself XD
More videos on this, pleaseeeeeee!!! 😋
