This is what a traumatized orangutan looks like. Please donate today via link in comments to fund the daily treatment costs of rescued orangutans at YIARI’s rescue center.
This heartbreaking footage was filmed shortly after she was rescued by the BKSDA in 2016 and taken to the rescue center of our partners, YIARI. The psychological trauma she is displaying is a result of her time being kept as a ‘pet.’ This unnatural environment resulted in psychological damage that was evident in every move that she made.
In the video, she is seen hugging herself tightly-a heartbreaking attempt to replace the comfort and security she should have received from her mother. Our partners YIARI are doing everything they can to provide Joss and other rescued orangutans with the motherly love and care they so desperately need.
The cost of this care is significant. YIARI are committed to rehabilitating Joss and preparing her for a future in the wild, but this process takes years and demands substantial resources. And Joss is not alone. In fact, there are 68 orangutans in YIARI’s care right now!

What was so sad is that he was absolutely terrified of any contact at all. He literally held himself so tight out of fear and pure loneliness. That goes far beyond heartbreaking. No creature should ever have to experience anything like this ever! You can see the pain and sadness in those 👀eyes👀 and again it's beyond heartbreaking. Chimpanzees can be aggressive at times. Orangutans are a little more gentile. I'm not saying that they can't be dangerous, they can, but they are also incredibly protective of their babies, and they are some of the most devoted and loving mothers of all of the primates. This should NEVER happen!

I remember back when these videos first came out. There was Buddy, a baby orangutan who's mother was killed, and he was taken for a pet. When they found him he was so terrified and emaciated that his limbs had swollen to the point that any physical contact caused him excruciating pain. He'd cry and howl in pain even when the Veterinarians tried to feed him. Thankfully there are some unbelievably dedicated and very special people who were there to care for this little guy. He is now free in one of the sanctuaries that were created for these incredibly beautiful and wonderful primates. This little one also broke my heart. I've never seen anyone or any other being so terrified, so sad, and so lonely that they've wrapped their arms around themselves so tight as if they are hugging the only thing they have left, and THAT is so heartbreaking. No one, not a human being or any other creature should ever have to go through what these little orangutans had to experience. Seeing their mothers killed right in front of them. Then placed in a cage like a Parrot. The one orangutan's cage was so small, that was why his limbs swelled up so severely. He could barely move, AND his diet was awful! These are extremely intelligent and critically endangered animals. Yet somehow these Palm Oil Plantation owners use mercenaries to hunt them down. This needs to stop! It should have been stopped decades ago!

@@user-gp2dh6np3eOrangutans are usually very solitary. The males just get busy, leave and the mothers care for the kids for about 8 years.
The only exceptions to the solitary nature come from the orangutans that come from places like the jungle school because they’re orphans who grew up with each other. They’re often seen on the pre-release islands either doing weird things to avoid conflict with dominant males like covering their eyes or socialising like playing and eating together.

She doesn't have her mom to hold on to and hug. This is sad. She is really traumatized and having a very hard time without her mom. She definitely was taken from her mother to soon. So sad.
She shouldn't have ever been taken from her mom at all. There is no right time to steal these animals from their own families and habitats, EVER. No one has that right. These evil people are murderers and kidnappers.

Too successful of an organization for that to be any possibility. Go look at the website and you will see how many they've rescued and cared for. As well as education to the public and planting trees for their habitat to be replaced and species to populate once again

From what I’ve seen with these places, the orangutans are kept in two months quarantine. The diapers are only on for indoors and during the night. When they’re outside playing with the workers who act as surrogate mothers, they don’t wear them because they can restrict movement.
Then, they get put in classes with other orphans of a similar age to learn how to climb, forage and all the other things their mothers would’ve taught them in the wild.
Then, when they’re old and skilled enough, they get put onto pre-release islands where they have a semi independent life to prove that, when the time comes, they can be released onto a piece of protected rainforest land eg national parks.
It can take years, even a decade for an orphan but they have a lot of dedicated workers and vets to help. It’s not perfect but they’re saints.

Somebody needs to pick her up and hold her that is something that she really needs and wants to feel loved and safe 😢
Being traumatized it may not be that simple. She may be too afraid of people and have to slowly gain their trust. This might have also been right at intake for the observation of how extensive her trauma was and to see how she acts just being around people. They usually do it for 1-5 minutes on intake. She may not trust and if they had tried before the video, could have freaked out. She could have screamed, cried, tried to bite, claw/scratch etc. if she refuses human contact tell she gains their trust, they will give her blankets, towels, and plush to hug and hold onto to not feel so alone. I know at the sanctuary I used to be at, we would even put heating pads, wet a towel or blanket then warm it up so they felt that the items were “real” by the temperature. If the primates didn’t destroy the plush, we had a lady that put a “wind up” thing inside and it ticked to mimic heart beat. If they did destroy regular plush, we couldn’t give them the plush with the wind up in it for safety. I personally bought some metronomes, the thing that musicians use to keep on beat, and we would put it outside the cage covered up by a blanket so it wasn’t loud and that give a lot of animals comfort as it sounds like a moms heart beat to them. When my mom was a little girl she would do it with kittens and puppies when she rescued them and it helps a lot.
@@SylWhitten sounds like you have done this a few times and God bless you for caring for them and their safety, it's just My instinct to comfort a injured or frightened animal especially a baby, sorry I am a big old softie when it comes to babies human or animal

et il se met en boule pour se proteger et bouge ainsi.

EVER!!!! It INFURIATES ME to know that there are HUMAN MONSTERS out there that can Treat these BEAUTIFUL GIFTS like The TRASH that THEY ARE when they are ONLY trying to LIVE and LOVE AND have MORE of A RIGHT TO then WE Do, Really!😮THEY Were Here Before HUMANS EVER Walked This Earth!!!!! They Are Here for A Reason!!! Just as Humans Are Too(but it’s times like these when I think Humans are More Harm then Good!!) HUMANS-Are the Ones That Go Into THEIR Territory And Kill, Destroy And Take Them and From Them!!!!!
